welcome croeso Professor / Yr Athro Richard B. Davies Vice-Chancellor, Swansea University / Is-Ganghellor, Prifysgol Abertawe
Welcome from Swansea University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard B. Davies
Croeso gan Is-Ganghellor Abertawe, yr Athro Richard B. Davies
Varsity is one of the great sporting occasions in Wales when Wales’ two strongest research intensive universities come together. Swansea University and the wider Swansea Bay City Region are brimming with renewed vigour and confidence: we meet in a friendly spirit but we are up for the challenge and we are determined to succeed.
Farsiti yw un o’r achlysuron chwaraeon mwyaf yng Nghymru pan ddaw dau o’r prifysgolion ymchwil cryfaf at ei gilydd. Mae Prifysgol Abertawe a rhanbarth Dinesig Bae Abertawe ehangach yn byrlymu egni a hyder newydd: rydym yn cwrdd mewn ysbryd cyfeillgar ond rydym yn barod am yr her ac yn benderfynol o lwyddo.
Creative, coordinated and well-practiced teamwork is what makes for a great sporting match. It is the same successful approach that has delivered Swansea University’s stunning new Science and Innovation Bay campus. For the first time, I am thrilled to welcome competitors, supporters, alumni, fellows and friends to Swansea University in its new dual campus setup, as well as to Liberty stadium, our Sketty Lane facilities and the River Tawe which host the sporting events.
Gwaith tîm creadigol, cyd-drefnol, âg ôl ymarfer sy’n gwneud gêm chwaraeon gwych. Dyma ‘run dull llwyddiannus a gyflawnodd campws Bae Gwyddoniaeth ac Arloesi newydd Prifysgol Abertawe. Am y tro cyntaf, rwyf wrth fy modd yn croesawu cystadleuwyr, cefnogwyr, cyn-fyfyrwyr, cymrodyr a ffrindiau i Brifysgol Abertawe yn ei gampws deuol newydd, yn ogystal â Stadiwm Liberty, ein cyfleusterau Lôn Sgeti ac Afon Tawe sy’n cynnal y digwyddiadau chwaraeon.
The young people taking part in Varsity have worked extremely hard to combine the rigours of intensive training alongside their academic endeavours and they will inspire and delight us with their performances. We congratulate them on their achievement in representing their Universities and we wish them a safe competition and the best of luck.
Mae’r bobl ifanc sydd yn cymryd rhan yn Farsiti wedi gweithio’n galed iawn i gyfuno hyfforddiant dwys ochr yn ochr â’u hymdrechion academaidd ac fe fyddant yn ein hysbrydoli a’n ymhyfrydu gyda’u perfformiadau. Rydym yn eu llongyfarch ar eu llwyddiant yn cynrychioli eu Prifysgolion a dymunwn gystadleuaeth ddiogel iddynt a phob lwc.
Varsity owes much of excitement to the exuberant swathes of green and red supporters. It is a wonderful occasion to be celebrated, and we trust that the celebrations will be warm-hearted and respectful of the wider community.
Rhan bwysig o gyffro Farsiti yw’r cefnogwyr gwyrdd a choch. Mae’n achlysur gwych i ddathlu, a hyderwn y bydd y dathliadau’n dwymgalon a pharchus i’r gymuned ehangach.
We extend our appreciation to the City and County of Swansea, South Wales Police and the Mid and West Wales Fire Authority for their help and support and our thanks to all those whose efforts behind the scenes make this event such a fixture in the sporting and University calendar.
Rydym yn estyn ein gwerthfawrogiad i Ddinas a Sir Abertawe, Heddlu De Cymru ac Awdurdod Tân Canolbarth a Gorllewin Cymru am eu help a chymorth a diolch i’r rheini sydd wedi gweithio y tu ôl i’r llenni sy’n gwneud y digwyddiad yn un pwysig yng nghalendr chwaraeon a Phrifysgol.

welcome croeso Felix Mmeka Swansea University Students’ Union Sports Officer / Swyddog Chwaraeon Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Abertawe
Good day all, It is massive honour to welcome you to Welsh Varsity 2016, the 20th Anniversary of the Welsh Varsity! For the 2nd consecutive year and with massive pleasure, the tournament is gracing the Swansea shores and it couldn’t be during a more iconic year for the University, due to the opening of the new Bay Campus this academic year. Varsity needs no introduction because it is not only one of the highlights of the academic year for the students, it is also the peak of the sporting year. A festival of sport that sees over 1,000 students from both Universities competing in over
30 different sporting events and 15,000 spectators supporting their friends, teams and University. It’s a truly emotional and captivating day that sees the Green and White Army start at Sketty Lane, cheering on and giving our teams a massive morale boost for the prize of the Varsity Shield. The cherry of the day is the fiercely contested Men’s Rugby Union match for the Varsity Cup that will kick-off soon. At this point, I hope you have enjoyed every minute of this sporting festival. Finally, there was months of planning behind this festival of sport and I want to take this opportunity to say a huge thanks to everyone including: the Green and White Army (players & spectators), the organisers, sponsors, and all staff, that without whom, this day wouldn’t be possible. welcome croeso Sam Parsons VP Sports and Athletic Union President / Is Lywydd Chwaraeon a Llywydd yr Undeb Athletau
Croeso and welcome to the 2016 instalment of the Welsh Varsity! Always a highlight of the academic year, Varsity is finally back again for over 4,500 Cardiff University students to get behind #TeamCardiff and descend like a glorious red mist over our Swansea counterparts. There have already been a number of fixtures that have contributed to Cardiff’s efforts to retain the shield for a 14th consecutive year, with today providing a feast of fixtures to get stuck into. Looking at the results of teams from either end of the M4 it looks set to be a close battle, with all eyes on the Liberty to finalise who takes bragging rights for the coming year. Good luck to all athletes, whether you’re playing in red or green. It’s been a privilege to be the President of Cardiff University Athletic Union this past academic year, and days like today make me feel both proud and honoured to be in the position I am in. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who put in the effort to make Varsity what it is, from the staff in the Athletic Unions, right through to the spectators that provide this brilliant atmosphere. Without you there would be no Welsh Varsity!!
Croeso i Farsiti Cymru 2016. Mae uchafbwynt y flwyddyn academaidd, Farsiti, o’r diwedd yn ôl eto gyda dros 4,500 o fyfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd yn cefnogi #TîmCaerdydd a disgyn fel niwl coch gogoneddus dros ein gwrthwynebwyr yn Abertawe. Mae nifer o gêmau yn barod wedi cyfrannu at ymdrechion Caerdydd i ddal gafael ar y darian am y 14eg flwyddyn yn olynol, gyda heddiw yn darparu gwledd o gêmau i’n diddanu ni oll. Wedi edrych ar ganlyniadau’r timoedd o naill ochr yr M4, mae’n argoeli i fod yn frwydr agos, gyda llygaid pawb wedi’u hoelio ar y Liberty i weld pwy fydd yn cael brolio
am y flwyddyn i ddod. Pob lwc i’r holl athletwyr, boed os ydych yn chwarae mewn coch neu wyrdd. Mae hi wedi bod yn fraint bod yn Llywydd Undeb Athletau Prifysgol Caerdydd dros y flwyddyn academaidd ddiwethaf, ac mae diwrnodau fel heddiw yn fy ngwneud yn falch i gael bod yn y swydd hon. Hoffwn gymryd y cyfle hwn i ddiolch i bawb sy’n gwneud yr ymdrech i gynnal Farsiti, o’r staff yn yr Undebau Athletaidd, i’r gwylwyr sy’n darparu’r awyrgylch wych hon. We provide excellent recreational facilities, a wide range of representative sports clubs and additional intra-mural competitions, to ensure that students of all abilities can participate in both competitive and non-competitive sport. Situated next door to the breath-taking Gower Peninsula, with one campus located in parkland and another with direct access to a beach, the University is ideally positioned to offer a diverse range of sports and activities. From beach and water sports to swimming at the Wales National Pool, plus a huge range of traditional sports such as netball, rugby and football, Swansea offers a balanced student experience for anybody that wants to get involved.
“The Sports Scholarship at the University allowed me to pursue two career paths simultaneously. I fondly remember my time at Swansea and particularly a Varsity win. In the future, knowing a career in sport doesn’t last forever, I won’t rule out returning to further my qualifications.” Alun-Wyn Jones, Law graduate 2009, Wales International rugby player, British and Irish Lions squad member.

excitement and anticipation Cyffro a Disgwyliad
This is my second year as the Coach of Swansea University Rugby Union. Having experienced Varsity for the first time last year, this season’s event provides me with even more excitement and anticipation. Having come from a playing and coaching background I am aware that the majority of players rarely have the opportunity to play and perform on a stage similar to the one provided today. These are the sort of games that aspiring players dream about playing in. A fantastic stadium, an enormous occasion steeped in history, a huge and energetic crowd, and the chance to do something special and be remembered by your friends and family. This year we are once again playing a home Varsity. This fills us with great pride and excitement. It has been a good year for the team with many positive changes off the field which have transferred onto the field. Swansea University extend a warm welcome to Leigh Davies as a coach. The former Wales International, who played for the Ospreys and captained the Scarlets has made an immediate impact. His appointment further demonstrates the commitment and support from the University and Sport Swansea to continue to provide the best possible opportunities for the players to realise their potential. The team has grown throughout the season and have come up against some very good teams in the BUCS Premiership ‘B’. These experiences have provided a great learning platform and the squad has grown stronger on and off the field as a result of these experiences. They secured third place with two games to play and guaranteed their promotion back to Premiership ’A’ for the 2016 / 2017 season which will provide the next chapter in our development. The commitment and professionalism displayed
throughout by every single player involved within the University Rugby Club has been of the highest standard. I can assure you that the players are keen to demonstrate their commitment and desire today in an attempt to bring that cup back to where it belongs, our home turf. All of the players are training to the levels of semi-professional rugby players whilst balancing their studies and I have nothing but admiration for every single one of them. The team are focused on honouring the proud traditions which have been put in place by previous players whilst carrying the University Varsity Flag. The preparation and hard work that all of the players have put in leading up to this year’s Varsity at the Liberty Stadium has been fantastic. Our training over the last three weeks has incorporated a variety of methods including strength and conditioning, skill based sessions, unit sessions and analysis. The team were extremely fortunate to be hosted by Woodbury Park Golf and Hotel, Devon, for two nights. Incorporated into this trip, the Royal Marines provided an invaluable experience and led a team building day followed by a floodlit game. This was an experience which will be remembered by everyone lucky enough to have been involved. The team are under no illusions and know the challenge that lies ahead. Cardiff are a very good side with a very good, experienced coaching team who have been plying their trade in the top tier of BUCS rugby this season. With that in mind the players and all the coaching team would like to extend a very big thank you to all of our supporters for their efforts today and reassure you that we will do everything possible to make you proud. I hope you all enjoy your day, get behind the players and create a terrific atmosphere whether you are supporting Swansea or Cardiff. Alan Flowers Swansea University Head Coach

Dyma fy ail flwyddyn fel Hyfforddwr Undeb Rygbi Prifysgol Abertawe. Ar ôl profi Farsiti am y tro cyntaf llynedd, rwyf yn edrych ymlaen yn fawr iawn at ddigwyddiad y tymor hwn. Gyda chefndir yn chwarae a hyfforddi, dwi’n ymwybodol fod y rhan fwyaf o’r chwaraewyr yn anaml yn cael y cyfle i chwarae a pherfformio ar lwyfan tebyg i’r un heddiw. Dyma’r math o gemau y mae chwaraewyr yn breuddwydio chwarae ynddynt. Stadiwm wych, achlysur enfawr wedi’i drwytho mewn hanes, torf enfawr ac egnïol, a’r cyfle i wneud rhywbeth arbennig y bydd eich ffrindiau a’ch teulu yn cofio. Eleni, unwaith eto, mae Farsiti yn cael ei gynnal adref. Mae hyn yn ein llenwi â balchder a chyffro. Mae hi wedi bod yn flwyddyn dda i’r tîm gyda llawer o newidiadau positif oddi ar y cae sydd wedi’u trosglwyddo ar y cae hefyd. Mae Prifysgol Abertawe yn estyn croeso cynnes i Leigh Davies fel hyfforddwr. Mae’r cyn chwaraewr rhyngwladol Cymru, a chwaraeodd i’r Gweilch a bu’n gapten ar Scarlets wedi cael effaith uniongyrchol. Mae ei benodiad yn arddangos ymroddiad a chefnogaeth y Brifysgol a Chwaraeon Abertawe i barhau i ddarparu’r cyfleoedd gorau posib i’r chwaraewyr i gyflawni eu potensial. Mae’r tîm wedi tyfu drwy gydol y tymor ac wedi cystadlu yn erbyn rhai timoedd da iawn yn uwch gynghrair ‘B’ BUCS. Mae’r profiadau hyn wedi darparu llwyfan gwych i ddysgu ac mae’r garfan wedi tyfu’n gryfach ar ac oddi ar y cae o ganlyniad i’r profiadau hyn. Fe sicrhaon nhw drydydd safle gyda dwy gêm i chwarae a sicrhau dyrchafiad yn ôl i Uwch Gynghrair ‘A’ ar gyfer tymor 2016/17 a fydd yn darparu’r pennod nesaf yn ein datblygiad.
Mae’r ymrwymiad a’r proffesiynoldeb y mae bob chwaraewr o fewn Clwb Rygbi’r Brifysgol wedi’i arddangos wedi bod o’r safon uchaf. Gallaf eich sicrhau bod y chwaraewyr yn awyddus i ddangos eu hymrwymiad a’u hawydd heddiw mewn ymgais i ddwyn y gwpan yn ôl. Mae’r chwaraewyr i gyd yn hyfforddi i’r un lefelau a chwaraewyr rygbi lledproffesiynol tra’n cydbwyso eu hastudiaethau ac mae fy nghanmoliaeth yn fawr i bob un ohonynt. Mae’r tîm yn canolbwyntio ar anrhydeddu traddodiadau balch chwaraewyr blaenorol tra’n cario Fflag Farsiti y Brifysgol. Mae’r holl baratoi a’r gwaith caled y mae’r chwaraewyr i gyd wedi ei roi i Farsiti yn Stadiwm y Liberty eleni wedi bod yn wych. Mae ein sesiynau hyfforddi dros y tair wythnos diwethaf yn ymgorffori amrywiaeth o ddulliau gan gynnwys cryfder a chyflyru, sgiliau’n seiliedig ar sesiynau, sesiynau uned a dadansoddiad. Roedd y tîm yn lwcus iawn i gael y cyfle i fynd i Westy a Pharc Golff Woodbury, Devon, am ddwy noson. Yn ystod y trip hwn, fe ddarparodd Royal Marines brofiad gwerthfawr ac arwain diwrnod adeiladu tîm a gêm i ddilyn. Roedd hyn yn brofiad y bydd yn cael ei chofio gan bawb a oedd yn ddigon ffodus i gymryd rhan. Mae’r tîm yn llawn ymwybodol o’r sialensiau sydd i ddod. Mae Caerdydd yn dîm da iawn, gyda thîm hyfforddi profiadol sydd wedi profi eu hunain ar frig haen BUCS y tymor hwn. Gydag hynny mewn golwg, hoffai’r chwaraewyr a’r tîm hyfforddi estyn diolch mawr i’n cefnogwyr i gyd am eu hymdrechion heddiw ac rydym yn eich sicrhau y byddwn yn gwneud popeth posibl i’ch gwneud chi’n falch. Gobeithio eich bod i gyd yn mwynhau’r diwrnod, yn cefnogi’r chwaraewyr ac yn creu awyrgylch gwych boed yn cefnogi Abertawe neu Gaerdydd. Alan Flowers Prif Hyfforddwr Prifysgol Abertawe

something truly special Rhywbeth arbennig iawn
I write this piece extremely excited about my 2nd Varsity Match with Cardiff University. Having been involved in some big rugby events in my time in coaching, including televised Premiership Finals and Cup Matches, last year’s Varsity Match was without question the best experience in my coaching career thus far. To see a group of young athletes come together and perform the way they did on the night was something truly special. To get the victory was of utmost importance and to beat an impressive Swansea outfit in the fashion that we did I think made a big statement about where we are now as a rugby programme.
The Welsh Varsity Match is a unique opportunity for players and coaches to prepare professionally for a one-off match – the only thing you can really compare it to in rugby is an international programme. We are very lucky in Cardiff that although a lot of our players play with semiprofessional clubs in Wales, the clubs believe in and support the Varsity programme. They release these players to play a full part in the preparations and the match itself – for this we are extremely grateful.
Like last year, all players involved in tonight’s match have qualified to do so through our BUCS league campaign and have met the minimum criteria for participation based on our values set up at the beginning of each year. I feel this selection/ qualification process gives us the edge over our counterparts in Swansea who have players playing in the match who didn’t participate in their BUCS campaign and haven’t been part of their group throughout the whole season. This year selection has been extremely difficult as we have used 44 players at 1st XV level this season. This shows that our rugby programme at the university is growing in strength and depth and can only be a good thing. University rugby is all about student experience and the Welsh Varsity match is a fantastic experience for all involved. Some of these players will never have an opportunity to perform in front of 15,000 fans and it is something very special. It’s a credit to the operations teams behind the scenes and how hard they work to turn this into a special event in everybody’s rugby calendars in Wales. Louie Tonkin Cardiff University Head of Rugby

Rwy’n ysgrifennu’r darn hwn yn llawn cyffro am fy 2il gêm Farsiti gyda Phrifysgol Caerdydd. Rwyf wedi bod yn cymryd rhan mewn rhai digwyddiadau rygbi mawr yn fy amser yn hyfforddi, gan gynnwys Rownd Derfynol yr Uwch Gynghrair a Gemau Cwpan, ond gêm Farsiti llynedd oedd y profiad gorau yn fy ngyrfa hyfforddi hyd yn hyn. Roedd hi wir yn arbennig gweld athletwyr ifanc yn dod at ei gilydd a pherfformio ar y noson. Roedd sicrhau’r fuddugoliaeth yn bwysig, ac roedd curo tîm trawiadol Abertawe yn y modd y gwnaethom wedi gwneud datganiad mawr am lle rydym ni nawr fel rhaglen rygbi.
Mae gêm Farsiti Cymru yn gyfle unigryw i chwaraewyr a hyfforddwyr baratoi’n broffesiynol ar gyfer y gêm – yr unig beth gallwch ei gymharu âg yn rygbi yw rhaglen ryngwladol. Rydym yn ffodus iawn yng Nghaerdydd, er bod nifer o’n chwaraewyr yn chwarae â chlybiau lledbroffesiynol yng Nghymru, mae’r clybiau yn credu ac yn cefnogi’r rhaglen Farsiti. Maent yn rhyddhau’r chwaraewyr hyn i gymryd rhan lawn yn y paratoadau a’r gêm ei hun – rydym yn hynod ddiolchgar am hyn.
Fel llynedd, mae’r holl chwaraewyr sydd yn cymryd rhan yn y gêm heno yn gymwys i wneud hynny drwy ein hymgyrch cynghrair BUCS ac wedi cyrraedd y meini prawf gofynnol ar gyfer cyfranogiad yn seiliedig ar ein gwerthoedd sy’n cael eu sefydlu ar ddechrau bob blwyddyn. Teimlaf fod y broses dethol/ cymhwyster yn fantais i ni gan fod gan Abertawe chwaraewyr na gymerodd rhan yn ymgyrch BUCS a heb fod yn rhan o’u grw ˆ p drwy gydol y tymor llawn. Mae dewis y tîm eleni wedi bod yn hynod o anodd gan ein bod wedi defnyddio 44 o chwaraewyr ar lefel XV 1af y tymor hwn. Mae hyn yn dangos bod ein rhaglen rygbi yn y Brifysgol yn tyfu ar ran nerth a dyfnder ac mae hyn wrth gwrs yn beth da. Profiad y myfyriwr sydd wrth wraidd rygbi Prifysgol, ac mae’r gêm Farsiti yn brofiad gwych i bawb sydd ynghlwm. Bydd rhai o’r chwaraewyr hyn byth yn cael y cyfle i berfformio o flaen 15,000 o gefnogwyr ac mae’n rhywbeth arbennig iawn. Mae’n glod i’r timoedd gweithrediadau y tu ôl i’r llenni a pha mor galed maent yn gweithio i sicrhau ei fod yn ddigwyddiad arbennig yng nghalendrau rygbi pawb yng Nghrymu. zero tolerance dim goddefgarwch Sport plays a huge part of University life for a great number of students all over the UK. It provides extracurricular activity as a break from studies; not only having health and fitness benefits but also providing a great opportunity to meet and make new friends. However, many LGBT+ students feel excluded or uncomfortable participating in sports because of factors including the culture, structure and physical environment in which sport takes place.
After in-depth reports from NUS UK and Sport Wales, Cardiff and Swansea Students’ Unions launched the Out in Sport campaign alongside the Welsh Varsity 2013. The campaign aims to help break down some of the barriers that LGBT+ students face when it comes to participating in sport. Out in Sport will encourage a sporting environment that welcomes all students regardless of sexual preference or orientation and will aim to dispel negative perceptions held by LGBT+ students. By enforcing a zero tolerance policy to sexual harassment, Out in Sport hopes to raise awareness and understanding of the challenges that are faced. Rainbow Laces In 2015, Welsh Varsity sports teams laced up and showed their support for Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign. The campaign started with the aim of ridding sport of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia by getting players, clubs and fans to stand together and send out a message that it has no place in sport today. This year, our teams will be getting involved again by wearing the laces and spreading the message on social media. Find out more at stonewall.org.uk and follow #RainbowLaces.
Mae gan chwaraeon rôl bwysig ym mywyd Prifysgol nifer fawr o fyfyrwyr ar draws y DU. Mae’n darparu gweithgaredd allgyrsiol sy’n rhoi dihangfa iddynt o’u hastudiaethau; mae’n gyfle nid yn unig i wella’ch iechyd a’ch ffitrwydd, ond yn gyfle gwych i gwrdd ag, a chreu ffrindiau newydd hefyd. Fodd bynnag, mae sawl myfyriwr LDHT+ yn teimlo fel eithriad neu’n anghyfforddus wrth gymryd rhan mewn chwaraeon oherwydd ffactorau gan gynnwys y diwylliant, strwythur ac amgylchedd corfforol y mae chwaraeon yn bodoli ynddo.
Ar ôl adroddiadau manwl gan UCM DU a Chwaraeon Cymru, lansiwyd yr ymgyrch Mas mewn Chwaraeon gan Undebau Myfyrwyr Caerdydd ac Abertawe ochr yn ochr â Farsiti Cymru 2013. Bwriad yr ymgyrch yw helpu chwalu rhai o’r rhwystrau y mae myfyrwyr LDHT+ yn eu hwynebu wrth gymryd rhan yn chwaraeon. Bydd Mas mewn Chwaraeon yn hybu amgylchedd chwaraeon a fydd yn croesawu pob myfyriwr beth bynnag yw eu cyfeiriadedd rhywiol a bydd yn ceisio dileu dirnadaeth negyddol yn erbyn myfyrwyr LDHT+. Trwy orfodi polisi dim goddef aflonyddwch rhywiol, y gobaith yw bod Mas mewn Chwaraeon yn codi ymwybyddiaeth a dealltwriaeth yr heriau a wynebir. Lasys Chwaraeon Yn 2015, fe ddangosodd timoedd chwaraeon Farsiti Cymru eu cefnogaeth i ymgyrch Lasys Enfys Stonewall. Dechreuodd yr ymgyrch gyda’r bwriad o gael gwared ar homoffobia, biffobia a thrawsffobia mewn chwaraeon drwy gael chwaraewyr, clybiau a chefnogwyr i sefyll â’i gilydd i gyfleu’r neges nad oes lle iddo mewn chwaraeon heddiw. Eleni, bydd ein timoedd yn cymryd rhan eto drwy wisgo’r lasys a rhannu’r neges ar gyfryngau cymdeithasol. Darganfyddwch mwy ar stonewall.org. uk a dilynwch #RainbowLaces.

Welsh Varsity Shield Challenge Today, thousands of Cardiff and Swansea fans descended on Swansea to take part in and to cheer on the Welsh Varsity Shield sports. The tournament returned to Sketty Lane for a second year allowing Swansea to play on their home turf again. The Welsh Varsity is the culmination of a season’s worth of hard work in every sport. Most teams compete weekly in the BUCS competition but many will state that Varsity is the one fixture that they enjoy the most. The Welsh Varsity Shield is special to so many people for so many reasons; whether is it the underdog
story of two teams with leagues between them, having this one opportunity to show that they can compete at a higher level and rise to the occasion. For some, it is the last match they may play for their university. For others it is for something greater than BUCS points; pride and bragging rights against their greatest rivals. Every athlete on that day could walk away with their heads held high as their fans, friends and family cheers from start to finish and offer support and praise for their hard efforts. Today the teams faced off at Sketty Lane for another full
day of sporting triumphs and heart breaks. New for 2016 after successful trials last year, we would like to welcome archery, athletics and kickboxing to the Welsh Varsity ranks. Fixtures have taken place over the last week, starting with cycling on Wednesday 13th April and seeing clubs such as rowing, archery, rifle, equestrian, kickboxing and waterpolo all strive for victory. Whether you’re green and white, red and black, or just undecided, we hope you enjoyed being part of the largest festival of student sport in Wales.

Her y Darian Farsiti Cymru Heddiw, gwnaeth filoedd o gefnogwyr Caerdydd ac Abertawe deithio i Abertawe i gymryd rhan ac i annog cystadleuwyr chwaraeon y Darian Farsiti Cymru. Daeth y twrnamaint yn ôl i Lôn Sgeti am yr ail flwyddyn yn galluogi Abertawe i chwarae adref eto. Farsiti Cymru yw uchafbwynt tymor o waith caled ym mhob camp. Mae’r rhan fwyaf o dimoedd yn cystadlu’n wythnosol yng nghystadlaethau BUCS ond mae llawer yn credu mai Farsiti yw’r un digwyddiad maent yn ei fwynhau fwyaf. Mae Tarian Farsiti Cymru yn arbennig i gymaint o bobl am
wahanol resymau; efallai’r stori o’r tîm gwannaf o’r ddau, sawl cynghrair ar wahân, yn cael cyfle i ddangos y gallant gystadlu ar y lefel uchaf a gwella eu gêm ar gyfer yr achlysur. I rai, dyma o bosibl y gêm olaf y byddant yn ei chwarae dros eu prifysgol. I eraill, mae yno fwy i’w ennill na phwyntiau BUCS; balchder a’r hawl i frolio’r ffaith eu bod wedi curo’r hen elyn. Gall yr holl athletwyr ar y diwrnod gerdded i ffwrdd gyda’u pennau yn uchel, wrth i’w cefnogwyr, eu ffrindiau a’u teuluoedd eu cefnogi bob cam o’r ffordd a’u canmol am eu holl ymdrechion. Heddiw, gwynebodd y timoedd ei gilydd yn Lôn Sgeti am ddiwrnod
lawn arall o lwyddiant a thorcalon. Yn newydd i 2016 wedi treialon llwyddiannus llynedd, hoffwn groesawu saethyddiaeth, athletau a bocsio cic i rhengoedd Farsiti Cymru. Mae gêmau wedi bod yn digwydd dros yr wythnos diwethaf, yn dechrau â seiclo ar ddydd Mercher Ebrill 13 a chlybiau megis rhwyfo, saethyddiaeth, marchog a polo dw ˆ r i gyd yn anelu am fuddugoliaeth. Os ydych yn wyrdd a gwyn, yn goch a du, neu heb benderfynu, ‘rydym yn gobeithio eich bod chi wedi mwynhau bod yn rhan o’r w ˆ yl chwaraeon myfyrwyr fwyaf yng Nghymru.

History of the Welsh Varsity
From the Beginning
Welsh Varsity match Favourites
The Inaugural welsh Varsity Match was played in 1997 in the welsh Capital and home of Cardiff Rugby Football Club, Cardiff Arms Park. The game was played by the two welsh Premier Universities, Cardiff and Swansea, and the highly successful “Varsity model was adopted with all proceeds from the event going to Oxfam.
Historically Swansea University enjoy the tag of perennial favourites at the welsh Varsity Match winning to date 12 matches, losing six times and drawing once.
In the early years the welsh Varsity Match was held alternatively at Cardiff Arms Park and St Helens, the home of Swansea Rugby Club. From 2003 until 2007 the game was held at the neutral ground of the Brewery Field in Bridgend. In 2006, the welsh Boat Race between Cardiff and Swansea was included in the Varsity programme, which itself gained considerable recognition. The welsh Varsity celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2011 and to mark this, moved from the Liberty Stadium in Swansea to the Principality Stadium and the welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff. On the back of this success, the rugby match has been played at the Principality Stadium ever since, until last year, which saw the tournament move back to the popular Liberty Stadium.
Swansea University have regularly enjoyed the ability to select from a vast pool of very talented players such as welsh nationals Alun wynn Jones, Ritchie Pugh and Dwayne Peel. 2007 saw Swansea field no less than 11 FIRA Internationals at varying ages resulting in a win at Cardiff Arms Park. Cardiff have enjoyed success in recent years with the introduction of a Head Of Rugby at Cardiff University. In 2015, Cardiff were victorious on away turf at the Liberty Stadium when the tournament returned to Swansea.. Life after the Welsh Varsity Many Cardiff and Swansea University students have gone on to represent and gain contracts with many semi-professional and professional clubs on the back of great performances in the welsh Varsity Match.
