THE EBB AND FLOW OF

FRANCIS S I N AT R A written by Vanessa Cardoza

Before Elvis Presley became the “King of Rock and Roll,” Frank Sinatra became “The Voice.” Before “Beatlemania” and the “British invasion,” Frank Sinatra was swooning bobby soxers inciting “Sinatramania” and the Columbus Day Riot. Before Michael Jackson was moonwalking across stages, Frank Sinatra was flying to the moon and signing moonlight serenades! Franc i s Al b e r t “ F r a n k ” S i n a t r a i s a r g u a b l e A m e r i c a ’s first pop icon and is one of the most important popular music figures of the 20th century. Although he is immortalized in the annals of music history, his six decades of performing and recording was not as smooth as vocals. As quickly as he rose to stardom, his public image began to fall. It took an Academy Award winning acting performance to get him back in societies good graces, but his personal life took some hits along the way. In the advent of his career, he attempted to succumb to the growing trends in popular music to seemingly no avail. Frank Sinatra was an ocean of emotions and audiences could feel each crest and trough in his life through his music.

Songs such as “My Way,” “Strangers in the Night,” and “Theme from New York, New York” have come to define the man, but before he was Ol’ Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra was just a kid from Hoboken, New Jersey who was always destined to perform. He went from singing at weddings, political beer parties and family gatherings with his mother, to singing on the player piano at his parents’ tavern while in high school, to eventually getting his first big break appearing on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour show with a hometown singing group. Frank Sinatra idolized Bing Crosby in his youth, and after seeing his idol sing live, he dropped out of school and pursued a career as a professional singer. His early years saw his greatest professional growth and were seemingly his happiest of times personally. The first LP in this boxed set, The Voice: Frank Sinatra 1939-1947, serves as stroll down memory lane of Frank Sinatra’s recorded history during the Swing Era. His first taste of fame came as the lead vocalist with the former Benny Goodman Orchestra trumpeter,

“How   much do I love you? I’ll tell no lie How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky?” Song: How Deep Is The Ocean?

Harry James, and his newly formed orchestra. James plucked the naturally talented singing waiter from The Rustic Cabin, a roadhouse in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and put Sinatra’s smooth baritone front and center. Meanwhile, romance was at full bloom in his personal life. On February 4, 1939, Frank Sinatra married his sweetheart, Nancy Rose Barbato, that he wooed with his voice five summers earlier on the Jersey Shore. The rawness and youthfulness of his singing voice are most notably heard on his first commercial record “From the Bottom of My Heart.” Yet the vocal training and growth in his range during his time with Harry James and His Orchestra is notable on “It’s Funny to Everyone But Me,” “Ciribiribin,” and “All or Nothing At All.” Sinatra’s ability to clearly articulate each note and enunciate each lyric, reminiscent of Italian bel canto singing, is prominent in the Harry James years. It wasn’t until Sinatra joined Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra that he achieved market success (his re-

cording of “All or Nothing At All” with Harry James’ orchestra became critically acclaimed during the 19421944 musician strike once re-released by Columbia Records). He learned to use his voice as an instrument under Dorsey’s direction as well. Sinatra spent time observing Tommy Dorsey play his trombone for long stretches of a song without taking a breath. He studied this musical instrumentation and began to emulate the legato style of playing with his singing voice. The flowing manner of notation would be carried with Sinatra throughout the remainder of his career. Frank Sinatra’s profession took a meteoric rise when he ventured away from big bands and became a solo artist. Radio shows, USO tours and broadcasts and live performances in New York nightclubs in the early to mid-1940s made Sinatra a cultural phenomenon and an idol of teenagers, much like Bing Crosby was for him nearly two decades prior. His renditions of the pop standards were given new meaning and depth through Sinatra’s attention to lyrics and seriousness of his vocals. Songs such as “Put Your Dreams Away,” his de-facto theme song in 1945, and “I Couldn’t Sleep a Wink Last Night,” that earned an Oscar nomination for Best Music, Original Song, to “Nancy (with the Laughing Face),” recorded with Columbia Records in 1944 and “Five Minutes More,” a pop song and 1946 number one hit for Sinatra, demonstrate Sinatra’s ability to make the audience feel the words he was singing. With the release of his first studio album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra, under Columbia Records, Frank Sinatra had reached his peak. While Sinatra’s crooning was marked by singing in a straight line in a straight tone with a narrow oscillation of sound waves, his professional and personal life was more sporadic and fluctuated. A fall from grace in the public eye coupled with an erratic love

life seemingly hardened the man and in turn hardened his voice. In the late 1940s he faced accusations of mob ties, a divorce from Nancy because of extra-marital affairs, and a tumultuous, but short lived, relationship with actress Ava Gardner. Meanwhile, he was having disputes with Columbia Records management and his musical career began to stall. Signing a deal with Capitol Records in April of 1953 and the release of “Young at Heart” in 1954, his first hit single since 1947, was the advent of his career revival. The 1950s, Sinatra’s sound took on a jazzier tone but also the struggles with love resulted in some of his best work. His confidence in his work is felt throughout the Capitol Years on to the Rat Pack years and his time as “Chairman of the Board” under his self-made Reprise record label. Not only did his voice change in timbre but his record making adapted to the times as well. The introduction of the microgroove long playing, LP, vinyl record having a speed of 33 1/3 revolutions per minute allowed artists to expand track lists from four to five songs per side to eight songs per side. This culminated in the creation of the “concept album,” which in a collection of songs centered around a singular theme or mood. Sinatra is even created with creating the first concept album. In the 1950s and 1960s, Sinatra developed numerous concept albums, normally alternating between up tempo swing records to a record full of ballads and torch songs. This decade saw some of his best recorded work, namely albums such as Songs for Young Lovers, In the Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin’ Lovers!, and Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely. This boxed set’s second LP, Chairman of the Board: Frank Sinatra 1953-1962, is in fact a Sinatra-themed concept album. Side A reflects his level of sadness and ability to sing saloon songs devel-

oped from his countless heartbreaks and yearning to be loved through a selection of some of his best ballads of the time. Side B is a transition from the deeper, rougher voice to his confident, swinging voice with a collection of jazz standards for which his recordings became the archetype. The 1960s through 1980s saw the transition in popular music to rock and roll, Frank Sinatra’s voice and tone took a shift. This time period in his life included some of his acclaimed tracks that the average fan identifies with when they think of Frank Sinatra, myself included. Frank Sinatra’s later years saw him trying to adapt to the changing musical climate, seemingly to no avail, as well a period of personal reflection. The release of September of My Years and the anthology album, A Man and His Music, coincided with Sinatra’s 50th birthday at a time in which he reached the “peak of his eminence” according to Billboard magazine. After a brief retirement in 1971, Ol’ Blue Eyes came back and continued recording and performing until 1995. The last LP in this boxed set, Ol’ Blue Eyes: Frank Sinatra 1963-1980, serves as the epitaph that a man of Frank Sinatra’s storied career deserves. While the first LP marks his rise to stardom, and the second LP is a concept album portraying his career revival, this

Whatever else has been said about me personally is unimportant. When I sing, I believe. I’m honest.  Quote: Frank Sinatra

Song: My Way

“I’ve   lived a life that’s full, I’ve traveled each and every highway, and more, much more than this I did it my way.”

LP is the curtain call on Frank Sinatra’s recording history. Side A is a collection of his hits during the later years, and side B is a mini concept album around the theme of a man looking back on his life taking all the blows and living it his way. The entire boxed set is a Frank Sinatra-themed concept album opening with his first commercially recorded track, “From the Bottom of My Heart,” and ending with the last song he ever sang in public on February 25, 1995 and the inscription on headstone, “The Best Is Yet to Come.” Frank Sinatra was up and down and over and out, but each time he found himself flat on his face, he picked himself up and got back in the race. Because That’s Life!

FROM THE BOTTOM OF I’LL NEVER SMILE MY HEART AGAIN 03:13

03:10

What more can I say? From the bottom of my heart I need you You’re part of my day

I’ll never smile again Until I smile at you I’ll never laugh again What good would it do? For tears would fill my eyes My heart would realize That our romance is through

My inspiration is you alone To call my own I love you, I love you From the bottom of my heart I want you It’s you I adore Every moment we’re apart I miss you And, darling, what’s more I’d be on my way to heaven If you’d say “I love you from the bottom of my heart” From the bottom of my heart I want you It’s you I adore Every moment we’re apart how I miss you And, darling, what’s more I’d be on my way to heaven If you’d say “I love you from the bottom of my heart”

S TA R D U S T 03:20 And now the purple dusk of twilight time Steals across the meadows of my heart High up in the sky the little stars climb Always reminding me that we’re apart You wander down the lane and far away Leaving me a song that will not die Love is now the stardust of yesterday The music of the years gone by. Sometimes I wonder, how I spend The lonely nights Dreaming of a song The melody Haunts my reverie And I am once again with you When our love was new And each kiss an inspiration But that was long ago And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song Besides the garden wall, when stars are bright You are in my arms The nightingale Tells his fairytale Of paradise, where roses grew Though I dream in vain In my heart it will remain My stardust melody The memory of love’s refrain.

I’ll never love again I’m so in love with you I’ll never thrill again To somebody new Within my heart I know I will never start To smile again Until I smile at you

O H ! L O O K AT ME NOW 03:15 I’m not the guy who cared about love And I’m not the guy who cared about fortunes and such I never cared much Oh, look at me now! I never knew the technique of kissing I never knew the thrill I could get from your touch I never knew much Oh, look at me now! I’m a new man better than casanova at his best With a new heart and a brand new start Why I’m so proud I’m bustin’ my vest So I’m the guy who turned out a lover Yes I’m the guy who laughed at those blue diamond rings One of those things Oh, look at me now! I’m not the guy who cared about love And I’m not the guy who cared about fortunes and such I never cared much Oh, look at me now! And I never knew the technique of kissing I never knew the thrill I could get from your touch I never knew much Oh, look at me now! I’m a new man better than casanova at his very best With a new heart and a brand new start I’m so proud I’m bustin’ my vest

So I’m the guy who turned out a lover Yes I’m the guy who laughed at those blue diamond rings One of those things Oh, look at me now! Look at me now! I’m not the guy who cared about love And I’m not the guy who cared about fortunes and such I never cared much Oh, look at me now! And I never knew the technique of kissing I never knew the thrill I could get from your touch I never knew much Oh, look at me now! I’m a new man better than casanova at his very best With a new heart and a brand new start I’m so proud I’m bustin’ my vest So I’m the guy who turned out a lover Yes I’m the guy who laughed at those blue diamond rings One of those things Oh, look at me now! Look at me now!

POLKA DOTS AND MOONBEAMS 03:20 A country dance was being held in a garden I felt a bump and heard an “Oh, beg your pardon” Suddenly I saw polka dots and moonbeams All around a pug-nosed dream The music started and was I the perplexed one I held my breath and said “May I have the next one?” In my frightened arms, polka dots and moonbeams Sparkled on a pug-nosed dream There were questions in the eyes of other dancers As we floated over the floor There were questions but my heart knew all the answers And perhaps a few things more Now in a cottage built of lilacs and laughter I know the meaning of the words “Ever after” And I’ll always see polka dots and moonbeams When I kiss the pug-nosed dream

LP 1 SIDE B

N I G H T A N D D AY 03:38 Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom tom When the jungle shadows fall Like the tick, tick, tock of the stately clock As it stands against the wall Like the drip, drip, drip of the raindrops When the summer show’are is through So a voice within me keeps repeating You, you, you Night and day You are the one Only you ‘neath the moon Or under the sun Whether near to me or far No matter, darling where you are I think of you Night and day Day and night Why it is so That this longing for you Follows wherever I go In the roarin’ traffic’s boom In the silence of my lonely room I think of you Night and day Night and day Under the hide of me There’s an oh such a hungry Yearnin’ burnin’ inside of me And it’s torment won’t be through ‘Til you let me spend my life Making love to you Day and night Night and day

PUT YOUR D R E A M AWAY 01:27 Put your dreams away for another day And I will take their place in your heart Wishing on a star never got you far And so it’s time to make a new start When your dreams at night Fade before you Then I’ll have the right

To adore you Let your kiss confess this is happiness, darling And put all your dreams away When your dreams at night Fade before you Then I’ll have the right To adore you Let your kiss confess this is happiness, darling And put all your dreams away

I COULDN’T SLEEP A WINK LAST NIGHT 02:57 I couldn’t sleep a wink last night Because we had that silly fight I thought my heart would break the whole night through I knew that you’d be sorry, and I’m sorry, too I didn’t have my favorite dream The one in which I hold you tight I had to call you up this morning To see if everything was still all right Yes, I had to call you up this morning ‘Cause I couldn’t sleep a wink last night I didn’t have my favorite dream The one in which I hold you tight I had to call you up this morning To see if everything was still all right Yes, I had to call you up this morning ‘Cause I couldn’t sleep a wink last night

S AT U R D AY N I G H T 02:43 Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week ‘Cause that’s the night that my sweetie and I Used to dance cheek to cheek I don’t mind Sunday night at all ‘Cause that’s the night friends come to call And Monday to Friday go fast And another week is past But Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week I sing the song that I sang for the memories I usually seek Until I hear you at the door Until you’re in my arms once more Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week

Mmmm. . . Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week I sing the song that I sang for the memories I usually seek Until I hear you at the door Until you’re in my arms once more Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week Until I hear you at the door Until you’re in my arms once more Saturday night is the loneliest night in the week

NANCY 03:19 If I don’t see her each day, I miss her Gee, what a thrill each time I kiss her Believe me, I’ve got a case On Nancy with the laughin’ face She takes the winter and she makes it summer And summer could take a few lessons from her Picture a tomboy in lace That’s Nancy with the laughin’ face Did you ever heard mission bells ringin’? Well, she’ll give you the very same glow When she speaks you would think it was singin’ Just hear her say hello I swear to goodness you can’t resist her Sorry for you, she has no sister No angel could replace Nancy with the laughin’ face

FIVE MINUTES MORE 02:35 Dear, this evening seemed to go so awfully fast We had so much fun and now you’re home at last I look forward to a kiss or two at the garden gate But she gave me just one peck and insisted it was late Give me five minutes more, only five minutes more Let me stay, let me stay in your arms Here am I, begging for only five minutes more Only five minutes more of your charms All week long I dreamed about our Saturday date Don’t you know that Sunday morning you can sleep late? Give me five minutes more, only five minutes more Let me stay, let me stay in your arms All week long I dreamed about our Saturday date Don’t you know that Sunday morning you can sleep late? Give me five minutes more, only five minutes more Let me stay, let me stay in your arms, ah, come on

I’LL SEE YOU AGAIN 02:53 I’ll see you again whenever spring breaks through again. Time may lie heavy between, but what has been, is past forgetting. Your sweet memory across the years will come to me. Though my world may go awry, in my heart ‘twill ever lie, Just the echo of a sigh, goodbye. All my life I shall remember knowing you, All the pleasures that I found in showing you,

The different ways that one may face,

Are you smart?

The changing light and changing shade, Happiness that must die, melodies that must fly, Memories that must fade, dusty and forgotten bye and bye.

But don’t change a hair for me Not if you care for me Stay little Valentine stay Each day is Valentines day

THREE COINS IN T H E F O U N TA I N 03:06 Three coins in the fountain, Each one seeking happiness. Thrown by three hopeful lovers, Which one will the fountain bless? Three hearts in the fountain, Each heart longing for its home. There they lie in the fountain Somewhere in the heart of Rome. Which one will the fountain bless? Which one will the fountain bless? Three coins in the fountain, Through the ripples how they shine. Just one wish will be granted, One heart will wear a valentine. Make it mine! Make it mine! Make it mine! Three coins in the fountain, Through the ripples how they shine. And just one wish will be granted, One heart will wear a valentine. Make it mine! Make it mine! Make it mine!

WRAP YOUR TROUBLES IN DREAMS 02:13 My lean baby – tall and thin Five feet seven – of bones and skin But when she tells me maybe she loves me I feel as mellow as a fellow can be She’s so skinny – she’s so drawn When she stands sideways – you (would) think (that) she’s gone But when she calls me: “baby” – I feel fine To think she’s frantically, romantically mine She’s slender, but she’s tender She makes my heart surrender And every night, when I hold her tight The feeling is nice – my arms can go around twice My lean baby – she’s so slim A broomstick’s wider – but not as trim And when she starts to kiss me – then I know I love her so, I’ll never, ever, let her go My lean baby – strange to see And all that nothing – it belongs to me And though she may be scrawny – she’s OK Because I wouldn’t want her any other way She’s so skinny – she’s so drawn When she stands sideways – you (would) think (that) she’s gone But when she calls me: “baby” – I feel fine To think she’s frantically, romantically mine I chased her – and I caught her Then a diamond ring – I bought her (Hey) The diamonds shine – the ring is so fine But here is the twist – she wears it right on her wrist My lean baby – she’s so slim A broomstick’s wider – but not as trim And when she starts to kiss me – then I know I love her so, I’ll never, ever, let her go My lean baby – tall and thin. . .  (do-do-do-do-do, . . . )

Fly me to the moon Let me play among the stars Let me see what spring is like on A-Jupiter and Mars In other words, hold my hand In other words, baby, kiss me

Some day, when I’m awfully low When the world is cold I will feel a glow just thinking of you And the way you look tonight

Fill my heart with song and let me sing for ever more You are all I long for All I worship and adore In other words, please be true In other words, I love you Fill my heart with song Let me sing for ever more You are all I long for, all I worship and adore In other words, please be true In other words In other words I love you

SOMETHIN’ STUPID 02:42 I know I stand in line until you think you have the time To spend an evening with me And if we go some place to dance, I know that there’s a chance You won’t be leaving with me Then afterwards we drop into a quiet little place And have a drink or two And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid Like “I love you” I can see it in your eyes that you despise the same old lies You heard the night before And though it’s just a line to you, for me it’s true And never seemed so right before I practice every day to find some clever lines to say To make the meaning come through But then I think I’ll wait until the evening gets late And I’m alone with you The time is right, your perfume fills my head, the stars get red and, oh, the night’s so blue And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid Like “I love you” The time is right, your perfume fills my head, the stars get red And, oh, the night’s so blue And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid Like “I love you”

And ever since that night We’ve been together Lovers at first sight In love forever It turned out so right For strangers in the night Love was just a glance away, a warm embracing dance away Ever since that night We’ve been together Lovers at first sight In love forever It turned out so right For strangers in the night Doo-bee-doo-bee-doo Doo-doo-dee-dah, dah-dah-dah-dah-dah

And now, the end is near And so I face the final curtain My friend, I’ll say it clear I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain I’ve lived a life that’s full I’ve traveled each and every highway And more, much more than this I did it my way Regrets, I’ve had a few But then again, too few to mention I did what I had to do And saw it through without exemption I planned each charted course Each careful step along the byway And more, much more than this I did it my way Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew When I bit off more than I could chew But through it all, when there was doubt I ate it up and spit it out I faced it all and I stood tall And did it my way I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried I’ve had my fill, my share of losing And now, as tears subside I find it all, all so amusing To think I did all that And may I say, not in a shy way Oh no, no, not me I did it my way For what is man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught To say the things he truly feels And not the words of one who kneels The record shows I took the blows And did it my way And did it my way

T H AT ’ S L I F E LP 3 SIDE B That’s life (that’s life) that’s what people say You’re riding high in April Shot down in May But I know I’m gonna change that tune When I’m back on top, back on top in June I said, that’s life (that’s life) and as funny as it may seem Some people get their kicks Stompin’ on a dream

That’s life (that’s life) I tell ya, I can’t deny it I thought of quitting, baby But my heart just ain’t gonna buy it And if I didn’t think it was worth one single try I’d jump right on a big bird and then I’d fly I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate A poet, a pawn and a king I’ve been up and down and over and out And I know one thing Each time I find myself layin’ flat on my face I just pick myself up and get back in the race That’s life (that’s life) that’s life And I can’t deny it Many times I thought of cuttin’ out but my heart won’t buy it But if there’s nothing shakin’ come here this July I’m gonna roll myself up in a big ball and die My, my

LET ME TRY AGAIN 03:31 I know I said that I was leaving, But I just couldn’t say goodbye. It was only self-deceiving To walk away from someone who Means everything in life to you. You learn from every lonely day I’ve learned and I’ve come back to stay. Let me try again; let me try again. Think of all we had before, Let me try once more. We can have it all, you and I again. Just forgive me or I´ll die. Please let me try again. I was such a fool to doubt you, To try to go it all alone. There´s no sense to life without you. Now all I do is just exist And think about the chance I’ve missed. To beg is not an easy task, But pride is such a foolish mask. Let me try again; let me try again. Think of all we had before, Let me try once more. We can have it all, you and I again. Just forgive me or I´ll die. Please let me try again.

THE BEST IS YET TO COME 02:55 Out of the tree of life I just picked me a plum You came along and everything started in to hum Still it’s a real good bet The best is yet to come Best is yet to come and babe won’t that be fine You think you’ve seen the sun But you ain’t seen it shine A wait til the warm up’s under way Wait til our lips have met And wait til you see that sunshine day You ain’t seen nothing yet The best is yet to come And babe won’t it be fine Best is yet to come, Come the day you’re mine Come the day you’re mine I’m gonna teach you to fly We’ve only tasted the wine We’re gonna drain the cup dry Wait til your charms are right for these arms, to surround You think you’ve flown before But baby you ain’t left the ground Wait till you’re locked in my embrace Wait til I draw you near And wait til you see that sunshine place Ain’t nothing like it here The best is yet to come And babe won’t it be fine The best is yet to come, Come the day you’re mine Come the day you’re mine And you’re gonna be mine

FRANK SINATRA

THE SOUNDTRACK T O M Y D AY D R E A M S written by Vanessa Cardoza

“Whatever else has been said about me personally is unimportant. When I sing, I believe. I’m honest.” This was Frank Sinatra’s response to an interview question in 1963 addressing his ability to convey the mood of a song to the audience. Frank may not have been the best husband or lover, the best father, or even the best man at times. Yet, his ability to convey raw emotion through his extensive interpretations of traditional pop standards stemmed from his personal experiences of love, heartbreak, and self-reflection. He never just performed a piece, he sang how he felt. This ability to express the story in the lyrics and transpose the meaning to the audience by interjecting his life into the music is why Frank Sinatra transcends the test of time and is why he is adored by so many, even to this day, including myself. Prior to meeting my boyfriend, I had a limited understanding of who Frank Sinatra was. I heard his songs before, especially his Christmas ones, yet I never appreciated the artist behind the music. Sinatra’s 1969 rendition of Paul Anka’s “My Way” is my boyfriend’s absolute favorite song, not just Sinatra song; therefore, it was the jumping-off point of my head-first dive into the world of Frank.

The lyrics portray an aging man reflecting on how he was able to live a good life because he did it his way. The man had conviction and wasn’t bullied into living a life he did not want. This speaks volumes to my boyfriend because he hopes he can say the same when he faces his “final curtain.” Although they weren’t Sinatra’s words, it was the inflection in his voice that made my boyfriend believe. It’s clear this is what Sinatra meant by him being honest when he sings. After hours of listening to his music I came to understand this and even feel it myself. My entire life I have had a passion for New York City. In December of 2012, I was able to walk in Time Square, see the Rockettes perform at Rockefeller Center, and adventure through Central Park and the zoo. My passion turned into a love affair. In August of 2016, my boyfriend and I spent our one-year anniversary in New York City exploring the lesser-known destinations, the art museums and numerous pizza parlors. My love affair turned into an all-out romance and a yearning to call the city my home. Today, Frank Sinatra is the soundtrack to my daydreams of living in my favorite city. “Come Fly With Me” makes me feel as though I am swing-

ing my way down 5th Avenue, “Fly Me To The Moon” flies me to Broadway and 42nd Street and Sinatra’s gliding voice on “The Way You Look Tonight” fills my heart with love as I hit all the romantic spots with the man of my dreams. In Italian opera, an aria is a solo set-piece in which the singer expresses an emotion through song. The aria displays the virtues of the singer as well as enhances the narrative. Usually at the end of the aria, the singer exhibits their extensive techniques while enlarging on the themes set forth in the work. This section is known as the Cadenza. Cadenza, serves as the aria of Frank Sinatra’s life. With over six decades of recording and performing, Frank Sinatra’s legacy knows no bounds. Yet, if it was not for my exposure to him as an artist and as a man I would not have garnered the appreciation I have of him. His life is best understood through his music. His life came in waves, thus so did his songs. His growth as a performer, and as a man, is evident when one listens to his early recordings on through the end of his career. I developed Cadenza as an operatic biography of a man telling a story we can all relate to, of ups and downs, all the while showing off his beautiful baritone.

“Alcohol   may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love your enemy.” Quote: Frank Sinatra
