A LETTER FROM THE DEAN Dear Cardozo Community, I am pleased to present this 2015–16 Annual Report of Giving. It is a celebration of your generosity and your confidence in our great law school. Thank you for saying ‘yes’ to Cardozo. Your spirited support of Cardozo makes everything possible for our students and for the strength of our school. Because of you, we deepen our commitment to the values that have inspired us since our founding. We lead the way as innovators, developing novel programs that prepare our students to be leaders in the law, business, on the bar and in all areas of the public interest. Our stellar faculty invigorates the intellectual rigor of the law school, instilling in our students the spirit of activism and a deep understanding of the central importance of the ideals of justice and service. Your gifts fuel the dynamism that is Cardozo. I want to thank you as well for giving the law school such a boost in my first year as dean. I know Cardozo inside and out…as a student, professor, vice dean, and dean. As it did for our more than 13,000 alumni, Cardozo gave me a life and a career of meaning and purpose. We are a proud and ambitious community that supports the law school’s pioneering spirit. From 1976, when we opened our doors, to the present, Cardozo has been on the forefront of innovative programs in legal education. From the Innocence Project to our prominence in Intellectual Property and Information Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution to our Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic to FAME, our Data Law Initiative, our The Indie Film and Tech Startup Clinics, Cardozo continues to lead discussions on the pressing and current legal and policy issues of the day. We educate students to be leaders in their chosen field.
And, because of you, because of your generosity, I know that every one of your gifts makes a difference in the life of a student who will go on to make a difference in the life of a client. Cardozo relies on contributions from alumni, parents and friends to support the law school’s immediate needs and ability to respond to new opportunities. You invigorate the educational life of our students and the intellectual life of the law school. Your gifts are the key to building a tradition of philanthropy and make a difference every day. We will be celebrating Cardozo’s 40th anniversary this year. This milestone gives us the singular perspective of acknowledging the dynamic trajectory of the law school and the plans for the breath, depth, and imaginativeness of our future academic and clinical programs. We set the goal to make the next 40 years even more promising than our extraordinary past. Thank you for being a vital part of this journey. I know that together we will continue to build a stronger Cardozo. With much gratitude,
Dean Melanie Leslie ’91

At the invitation of the dean, a number of alumni and friends of Cardozo have accepted positions on the Dean’s Advisory Council, whose mission is to assist the law school in adapting to the changing realities of the legal profession—changes that include the emergence of new areas of the law, the structural and economic changes in private law firms and the evolving roles that lawyers play in society. The council includes alumni and friends of the law school who make a minimum gift of $5,000 a year to the law school.

CARDOZO SCHOOL OF LAW RECEIVES $1M FOR THE HUMAN RIGHTS AND ATROCITY PREVENTION CLINIC FROM BENJAMIN B. FERENCZ, LEGENDARY NAZI WAR CRIMES PROSECUTOR Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University is proud to announce a $1 Million gift from Benjamin B. Ferencz, the legendary Nazi war crimes prosecutor and a leader in establishing an international criminal court. Now in his 97th year, Ferencz is a World War II veteran and was one of the earliest war crimes investigators. The donation will go toward Cardozo’s Human Rights and Atrocity Prevention Clinic, which will be renamed the Benjamin B. Ferencz Human Rights and Atrocity Prevention Clinic. The clinic is part of the Cardozo Law Institute in Holocaust and Human Rights (CLIHHR). Ferencz’s gift will aid in the school’s work as a leading global center for the study and promotion of human rights and atrocity prevention. The gift coincides with the 70th anniversary of the end of the first trial of Nazi war criminals, which occurred in October 1946. “We are deeply grateful to Ben Ferencz for his gift, and for his recognition of the work done by Cardozo to educate the next generation of human rights lawyers,” said Dean Melanie Leslie. “Ben’s lifetime commitment to using the law to advance human rights is an inspiration to all lawyers everywhere, and will continue to be used to inspire generations of Cardozo law students.” Ferencz seeks to inspire law students to use their years in law school to advance international peace and human rights efforts. “It takes courage not to be discouraged,” said Ferencz. “You cannot kill an ideology with a gun. You must learn tolerance, compassion and compromise. Law, not war, is my slogan and ‘never give up’ is my mandate.” A LIFE DEDICATED TO FIGHTING GENOCIDE AND CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY: Ferencz committed his life to ending war and the atrocities he witnessed firsthand. “I had peered into hell,” he said in describing his role gathering evidence of the Nazi horrors as the concentration camps were liberated. Ferencz, who was born in Transylvania and came to America as a child, went on to graduate from Harvard Law School and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He saw combat from the
6
beaches of France on D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge, and near the end of the war he was transferred to the headquarters of General Patton’s Third Army. He was the first man assigned to a small team tasked to investigate war crimes. General Telford Taylor, the Chief Nuremberg Prosecutor, recruited him for 12 war crime trials against Nazi leaders. Ferencz uncovered the existence of the Nazi Einsatzgruppen, execution squads responsible for the mass murder of Jews ahead of German military advances. As chief prosecutor at the Einsatzgruppen trial, Ferencz detailed how these groups killed one million people. The 22 Nazi leaders he proved responsible were all convicted: 14 of them received death sentences. Ferencz’s association with the Nuremeberg Chief Prosecutor Telford Taylor led to a lifelong friendship. Taylor went on to become a founding faculty member of Cardozo School of Law, and he and Ferencz became law partners in New York City. Following Nuremberg, Ferencz stayed in Germany to help establish the reparations programs, which provided restitution and compensation for all victims of Nazi persecution. His book Less than Slaves details his tireless efforts to secure compensation for the forced labor of concentration camp inmates. Ferencz was one of the founding architects of the International Criminal Court, which sought to hold perpetrators accountable for war crimes. Ferencz became a champion of peace as his life’s work. HISTORY OF CARDOZO’S HUMAN RIGHTS INITIATIVES: The program that became the Cardozo Law Institute in Holocaust and Human Rights was established by Professor Richard Weisberg, whose groundbreaking work on Holocaust litigation contributed to a historic financial settlement, a small portion of which supported the founding of the program. Under the dynamic leadership of the late Professor Sheri Rosenberg, a leading activist in protecting civilian populations, the program expanded to include the Human Rights and Atrocity Prevention Clinic, which is being renamed in honor of Ferencz.
well known for her work in cases concerning accountability for crimes committed under Chilean and Salvadoran military regimes in the 1980s. “We were so devastated when we lost Sheri, and we are very fortunate that Patty was able to step in to guide the Cardozo Law Institute in Holocaust and Human Rights and the clinic,” said Dean Leslie. “I thank her for her leadership, and with Ben Ferencz’s generous gift we have secured this unique and vitally important clinic for generations to come.” This fall, Dean Leslie expanded human rights programs at Cardozo, hiring Edwin Rekosh, a highly respected human rights lawyer and teacher to became the director of human rights initiatives at the law school. In September he launched a new program that expands on the work of the law school called Human Rights Forward. It will spearhead civil society solutions, citizen and business community engagement and new approaches to protecting and expanding human rights globally. Ferencz came to Cardozo this spring when students from the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution awarded him the 2016 International Advocate for Peace Award for his lifetime achievements advancing world peace as a prosecutor, an advocate and a leader in the effort to create the International Criminal Court in The Hague. A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO CARDOZO: Ferencz’s connection to Cardozo is a deeply personal one forged through his special relationship with Telford Taylor, who was a towering figure in the halls of Cardozo and on the international stage. The work of Taylor and Ferencz at Nuremburg focused the world’s attention on the perpetrators of war atrocities and created a new methodology for seeking international justice. Ferencz’s gift enables students in the Ferencz clinic to carry on this work in new and innovative ways that respond to both historic atrocity crimes and to the scourge of contemporary armed conflict.
“ It takes courage not to be discouraged,” said Ferencz. “ You cannot kill an ideology with a gun. You must learn tolerance, compassion and compromise. Law, not war, is my slogan and ‘never give up’ is my mandate.”
Professor Sheri Rosenberg passed away in 2015 and long-time human rights clinical professor Carolyn Patty Blum took over leadership of the program as interim director of CLIHHR. Blum is

1988 The Jacob Burns Institute for Advanced Legal Studies was founded. An important aspect of life at Cardozo, it enhances the law school’s mission by sponsoring a wide variety of scholarly activities on issues that significantly affect society. Jacob Burns, a former member of Cardozo’s Board from the day of its founding and the chair from 1886 to 1992, was an exceptional contributor to many aspects of life at Cardozo. He created the Jacob Burns Scholars Program, designed to attract promising students to the Law School, and gave funds for the Jacob Burns Medal to recognize the achievements of the Law School’s best students. In 1987, he wanted to undertake something beyond his previous efforts— something that would strengthen the institution and give it more national weight. That project became the Jacob Burns Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, which he called “the centerpiece of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.” Mr. Burns wrote of the eponymous Institute, “It will be a principal method of encouraging the research and scholarly mission of the Law School and assisting in obtaining national recognition for the institution.”

PARENT HONOR ROLL Thank you to our parents for the confidence you have expressed in your sons’ and daughters’ Cardozo legal education. Your contributions provide essential support to the law school in all areas including expanding student scholarship resources; assisting faculty recruitment and research; supporting library resources, technology, symposia, lectures, academic and clinical programs; and supporting building improvements. Parents are integral members of our Cardozo community and have historically played an important role in the life of the law school. Their participation enhances the vitality of Cardozo and makes so much possible for our students.

The Morellis’ gift designates $750,000 for the Arlene and Benedict Morelli Family Scholarship Fund, which will provide financial support for deserving students for years to come. “Scholarship support is a top priority of the law school,” said Dean Melanie Leslie. “The Morellis’ gift transforms Cardozo’s scholarship program, thereby allowing greater numbers of talented students to fulfill their dream of pursuing a legal education.” The gift also provides $200,000 to establish the Benedict Morelli Trial Team, which will expand Cardozo’s presence in national and international trial competitions and increase the number of students who can compete. $50,000 will be used to establish the Morelli Master Lecture Series, which will bring top trial lawyers to Cardozo to lecture, coach and mentor students. “Cardozo is well known for our Intensive Trial Advocacy Program, which was the first of its kind in the country, and for our excellent trial team,” said Dean Melanie Leslie. “We are deeply grateful to the Morellis for their partnership in strengthening our powerhouse teams and cementing Cardozo’s reputation as a top school for trial advocacy.” In May 2016, Benedict Morelli was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Yeshiva University at the Cardozo Law commencement at Lincoln Center. Yeshiva President Richard Joel conferred the degree in recognition of “a lifetime commitment to the cause of justice, and for the inspiration and dedication you bring to the service of your clients and the education of future lawyers.” The ceremony was capped with great joy for the family when the Morellis’ son Alexander received his J.D. degree and was hooded by his father as a member of the Cardozo class of 2016.

FRIENDS Growing numbers of Cardozo friends have connected to Cardozo through their giving. Their generosity reflects a shared belief in the law school’s ideals and their gifts ensure that the law school will continue to innovate and to flourish.

PARTICIPATION CLIMBS AS ALUMNI TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE:
Final Results Ballon Stoll Bader & Nadler, P.C.
The Law Firm Challenge is a friendly competition designed to give alumni at law firms an opportunity to promote giving to the Law School in a fun and challenging way, increase alumni participation and to reconnect with Cardozo. Under the leadership of David Herman ’00, a partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, 74 firms representing 679 alumni participated in the 2015–2016 Law Firm Challenge, welcoming 14 new firms—setting an all time record— and contributing to the highest number of firms reaching 100% participation over the course of the Challenge’s 10+ year history. The success is a due to the hard work of the many dedicated alumni who volunteered as law firm agents and serves as a reminder of the importance of strengthening our relationships with our alumni and expanding our network within the legal community. Thank you to the Law Firm Challenge agents who volunteer their time to help encourage their Cardozo colleagues at their individual firms to make an annual contribution to Cardozo in friendly competitions with their counterparts. The increasing numbers of participants is a true testament to the commitment of Cardozo alumni to the future success of the law school. The winners of the 2016 Law Firm Challenge are:

YOUNG LEADERS CIRCLE
CARDOZO: A CHAMPION OF SOCIAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS For 40 years, Cardozo School of Law has championed progressive programs designed to expand paths to justice. The law school is a well-known hub of public service and human rights programs and education. The newly established Center for Rights and Justice is a home for the diverse approaches Cardozo takes to achieving justice. The Center for Rights and Justice (CRJ) consists of more than 25 A LONGTIME LEADER: Cardozo initiatives, all working to KATHRYN O. GREENBERG ’82 achieve justice through scholarly research, public policy reform and client advocacy. The CRJ focuses on the themes of fairness, equality, accountability and transparency. It is the CRJ’s mission to bring to light through education and action these important elements of rights and justice. The innovative spirit that pioneered the creation of Cardozo’s first clinics is vigorously alive today. We offer a rich array of hands-on experiential opportunities; our Clinics allow students to represent clients under supervision of faculty who are specialists in their areas of expertise. From the Innocence Project to the Bet Tzedek Clinic; from the Tech Startup, The Indie Film Clinic and the Criminal Defense Clinic to the Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic, Cardozo offers transformative experiences to its students and to the clients they represent. Our clinics are critical resources to the underrepresented and are vital to the pressing social justice issues of the day.
The Kathryn O. Greenberg Clinic Immigration Justice Clinic (IJC) has risen to the fore as it has addressed and tackled current legal issues, just as the Innocence Project did many years ago. It is the catalyzing force behind some of the boldest and most transformative innovations at the intersection of immigration justice, criminal justice and mass incarceration. The clinic responds to the vital need today for quality legal representation for indigent immigrants facing deportation, while also providing students with invaluable hands-on lawyering experience. One of the most important of its many accomplishments was to have conceived of and pioneered the creation of the nation’s first universal representation public defender system for detained immigrants. Because of the IJC, a person facing deportation in New York City must be represented by a highly qualified immigration attorney. This model is being replicated in other cities around the country. This groundbreaking development would not have been possible without the dedication, focus and generosity of Kathy Greenberg, who has championed the work of the IJC from its beginnings. She is the founder of New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG). The scope of Kathy’s impact on expanding opportunities for Cardozo students and at the same time increasing access to justice to the underrepresented cannot be overstated. Her involvement in the growth of the Public Service Auction to the Bet Tzedek 30th Anniversary Toby Golick Fund, to Scholarship support for our students and to the IJC that bears her name runs long and deep. Her mantra to “help society’s most vulnerable people to receive the highest quality legal representation” is a rallying cry for the fullness of what constitutes Cardozo’s Center for Rights and Justice.
The Young Leaders Circle is a recognition society created specifically for graduates of the last five years who give a minimum gift of $50 annually. Members receive invitations to exclusive events each year, are recognized in the Annual Report of Giving and honored at a special recognition event with the Dean and Chair of Cardozo’s Board of Overseers.

ACTIVE NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS
ALUMNI FAMILIES RAISE $1M TO SUPPORT STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS From the time that Cardozo opened its doors in 1976, the law school has acknowledged the critical benefit of providing scholarship support for its students; assisting talented students in their dream to pursue a legal education. Melanie Leslie, in her first year as dean, identified scholarship support as a top priority. “We want to continue Cardozo’s tradition,” she said, “of graduating students prepared to practice at the highest levels of the profession, equipped with skills essential to the craft of lawyering as well as a deep understanding of the central importance of the ideals of justice and service.” To ensure Cardozo’s excellence, a mini-scholarship campaign was initiated: raise $1 Million for scholarship in one year. Alumni responded and the goal was met! We are deeply grateful to the following 10 alums and their families whose gifts and pledges of $50,000, $100,000 and $200,000 will strengthen Cardozo’s future and future of generations of students. Everyone has the opportunity to emulate the alumni and the families named above who took the lead to make a difference in the lives of students and in the life of Cardozo. Establishing an endowed scholarship is an opportunity to commemorate the name of a loved one in perpetuity. Sergio Rothstein named a scholarship after his sister Judith who was a student at Cardozo. Steven Krieger and Marc Kemp named their scholarships after deceased, beloved family members. Seth Taube named an existing space in the law school that had meaning to him, and directed the monies to scholarship support. Others named scholarships in honor of their families. Continue the Cardozo tradition. Take the opportunity. Fund a named scholarship at Cardozo. Give superbly talented students the gift to pursue their legal education at Cardozo so that when they graduate, they can make a difference in the lives of the clients they serve.
Please take a look at the history of scholarship support at Cardozo on page 29. If you are interested in setting up a scholarship, please contact: Patricia S. Weiss Associate Dean of Institutional Advancement pweiss@yu.edu 212.790.0270
We are grateful to the many alumni, parents and friends whose scholarship support has strengthened the intellectual diversity of the law school and given many talented students the opportunity to pursue their dream of a legal education at Cardozo.

His family, choosing to memorialize Mark at the law school, established the Mark Whitlock Scholarship to celebrate Mark’s spirit and support the efforts of 3L students who strengthen the life of the Cardozo community.

CELEBRATING
40 YEARS Forty years ago, in the heart of New York’s Greenwich Village, Cardozo Law School opened its doors and began a remarkable journey marked by leadership, innovation, activism and ambition. Help Cardozo celebrate 40 great years by making a gift today! ALUMNI
JOIN THE 4 FOR 40 CAMPAIGN Dean Melanie Leslie calls on all alumni to jump-start the next 40 by raising $4 million for student scholarships, programmatic support, and public service initiatives. The 4 FOR 40 Campaign is well underway with $1 million already raised from alumni for scholarships. With the support of every alum from each of our classes— 1979 to 2016—we can reach our $4 million goal. Each alum from every class: Make a gift and you will make it happen.
