High Flyers, Top Careers INTRODUCTION I am very pleased to introduce the High Flyers, Top Careers E-Guide. We live in a world that is more and more global and integrated: Europe relies on the USA which rely on Asia which relies on others; companies sell their products and services on all continents and depend less and less on their national markets to succeed. Future leaders will reflect these deep changes. Global thinking, mobility, language knowledge, ability to work in multicultural teams will be a must. Successful managers will be flexible, open-minded and creative, constantly questioning the way they do things. In that context, be curious and open-minded. Consider sectors that you are not familiar with. The best jobs are not always where you expect to find them. Keep in mind that the perspective is global and that companies which might not be very popular in your home country maybe world leader in their field. Intercultural training Is it up to date? Intercultural training is still considered by most companies to be an important part of the expatriation process. Indeed, a recent survey by ECA showed that two thirds of companies provide inter-cultural training, but how many employees and their families actually take it up?
Often heard excuses for non-attendance range from “I don’t have time” to “I’ve been to that country loads of times before for work so living there won’t be a problem.” Yet the challenges of being a global employee are greater than ever. Most expats not only have to deal with the culture they are moving to, but also work within a multinational team. As the world continues to work at an insatiable speed, turnaround times for moving abroad can involve just a number of days notice. And overriding all this is the feeling of being part of a shrinking planet, where so many cultural references are accessible on a virtual basis through mediums such as the worldwide web. We’re all cosmopolitan now apparently. Given these seismic shifts in our understanding of the world and its culture, is intercultural training evolving fast enough to meet the globalised needs of todays’ employees? The traditional intercultural training model comprises of two to three days training in a classroom. This is now pretty outdated and rarely offered as most employees do not have that level of time available for training, particularly predeparture. As a result, there has been a shift towards shorter half-day to one-day programs that have been tailored to the participants needs through pre-training needs analysis. Ideally, the session needs to be tailored to the expat, partner and where applicable, children. A half day session with a couple or family will not only facilitate an understanding of a culture but also be an effective intervention for opening up dialogue to ensure challenges are shared and discussed at a time when often communication around fears and concerns are pushed aside by the details of organizing a move. Consider the German couple moving from the UK to India. As they were learning about and discussing elements of Indian culture their trainer asked them to rate their excitement about moving to India between 0 and
4
10, with 0 being very unexcited and 10 being very excited. At exactly the same time the wife said 0 and the husband said 10 and then they looked at each other in amazement proclaiming “but I had no idea”, “why didn’t you tell me?” “but you were so excited” etc. Their consultant was able to work through this breakdown of communication and ease their transition abroad. A confidential, trusting environment was key to being able to help them really think through the challenges that lay ahead. In addition, despite the concern parents’ have around settling children in a new culture, it is easy to forget to talk. Brookfields Global Relocation Trends 2010 report found the top reason for assignment refusal is family concerns (83%) and one of the main reason for assignment failure is inability to adapt (47%). Intercultural training programs that include children with activities such as quizzes and drawing for younger children and information on schools and local trends for teenagers enable families to feel united, strengthening the chances of the expatriation being a success. The length of the program is important but so is the timing. Again, an essential development within the field of intercultural training has been to offer programs soon after arrival in the host country. It’s hard to consider living and working in Shanghai from a classroom in cold and rainy London. Imagine the difference in impact when expats can deal with the questions and concerns they may have with a local Chinese consultant soon after stepping off the plane. This also reduces the costs of the program as companies don’t have to factor in flying consultants around the world. Nonetheless, a half day intercultural training program is just the tip of the iceberg. As the effectiveness and importance of executive coaching is increasingly recognized (CIPD quote),
High Flyers, Top Careers E-GUIDE
this needs to be translated into the cross-cultural arena. In order to effectively embed learning, expats who are coached through the early days in their new roles become far more effective and productive employees. Managers who are able to attune their cultural leadership style to fit in with their local culture are more likely to create highly effective teams. Reflect on the American senior manager who could not understand why her predominantly British team seemed to recoil from her exuberant, enthusiastic management style. Why did they stare at her in cynical amazement when she delivered her motivational speech on arrival? And the “one on ones” afterwards didn’t seem to go much better either as she could get little response from her colleagues and felt very demotivated by her teams’ apparent lack of drive. The first two hour coaching session was all that was needed to get to the crux of this particular cross-cultural problem and enabled this leader to attain greater self-awareness and cross-cultural sensitivity. Through coaching and questioning she realized that the issue was not with the team’s motivation but her communication style, a style that led to her rapid promotion Stateside, but would have caused serious challenges within the British working environment. Now her messages are delivered in a more understated way and her team have accepted her as their leader. This example is just one of many different issues faced by expats and highlights the need for bespoke coaching. The personal issue above is not one you would share in a group training session and perhaps not even something you’d consider pre-departure. What’s more, moves between the US and UK and Europe and the UK are often considered “easy”. Yet anecdotal evidence from years of delivering intercultural training programs suggests the opposite. The transition to living and working in the US or UK can be far more challenging than moving to countries such as China and Japan. Frequently this is linked to expectations and accessibility. Cultures we are more used to appear less complicated, but often are just as challenging for expats, if not more.
Overriding all discussions around intercultural training, particularly in tough economic times, is the issue of cost justification and return on investment. A failed assignment can cost thousands and thousands and the proportional risk mitigation through providing intercultural training is minimal expenditure for a corporation. Remembering the evidence from research by Brookfield that the main reason for assignment failure is the inability to adapt, there appears little reason to not provide that upfront investment as a form of insurance. What’s clear is that organizations need to select tailored training and coaching that fits their employees’ needs. A blanket approach to intercultural training is ineffective and a waste of money. It’s essential to research options and providers and identify a program that will ensure cross-cultural learnings are embedded in employees’ minds, in order to achieve effectively functioning teams across all cultures.
We’re all cosmopolitan now apparently. Yet the challenges of being a global employee are greater than ever. Most expats not only have to deal with the culture they are moving to, but also work within a multinational team.

Candidates’ Voices: Mina The young generation in Bulgaria is on the move; it is ambitious and open-minded, just like Mina. With both beauty and brains, the 23 year old currently resides in the capital of Sofia and works as a marketing trainee at the international leader for cosmetics and beauty, L’Oréal. By Méabh McMahon
Mina was born in the capital of Bulgaria just two years before the fall of Communism. Back in 1987, Bulgaria was living a socialist-era under the reign of the longest-serving Soviet bloc Communist leader, Todor Zhivkov. Although most people had access to pensions, health-care and maternity leave and were guaranteed employment, all companies were state controlled. No foreign companies were welcome in Bulgaria and most Bulgarians stayed and worked locally. The labor market was extremely homogeneous. Working abroad was a privilege for the elite and working abroad meant working within the Eastern blockWestern Europe out of the question. But twentythree years later, the new Bulgaria is a fast growing economy and a host country for many foreign multinational companies. The young generation is on the move; it is ambitious and open-minded, just like Mina. With both beauty and brains, the 23 year old currently resides in the capital of Sofia and works as a marketing trainee at the international leader for cosmetics and beauty, L’Oréal. But the business graduate plans to work abroad again at her earliest possible convenience. The thing is, her international journey has already taken her to cities like Budapest, Milan, Singapore and London for work and studies, leaving her eager to explore the business world abroad. Some of her qualifications include a dual degree in international business and a specialist degree in PR from the London School of Public Relations. The double degree in Hungary and Italy meant Mina got to spend some time in South-East Asia in the Nanyang Business School in Singapore and she absolutely loved it. Mina got her travel bug when she was just 14. Back then, she started taking part in international seminars and debating competitions in foreign locations like Slovenia, Lithuania, Germany, Poland and even North Carolina. She spent some of her summers learning foreign languages in Spain and enrolled on extra-curricular courses in Washington. That’s why when you take a glance at her CV today; you can only come to one conclusion-

international. “I just love travelling”, she says, “I really enjoy meeting new and interesting people and learning foreign languages” Mina hopes to go on a trip around the world some day to explore some of her favourite places in Latin America and Asia in depth. Mina’s dream job is to work in an international consultancy. “But the job must be dynamic and challenging”, she stresses. Although she is just 23, the young graduate seems to have a strong head on her shoulders. “I always try to be as calm as possible”, she says, “I need to have the feeling that what I am doing is worthwhile and I need to feel empowered to grow”. Mina values team work and the importance of having a strong team around her. “I love working with enthusiastic and dedicated people”, she says. The young go-getter has no specific idols in the international business world but she does use her big brown eyes to observe and learn from those around her. “When it comes to successful professional people”, she says,”I always try to understand how and why they have managed to outperform others and I try to learn from them”. Mina speaks Bulgarian, English, Spanish and Italian. Communication is her thing. She loves giving presentations and talking in public. She has clocked up numerous awards for public speaking and debating and participated in competitions all over the world. So, does the communications expert have any tips for the rest of us on how to communicate with potential employers? Well, Mina is addicted to the internet and is a true believer in social media as a means to get connected, so much so, that she wrote a thesis about open innovation and networking. Although Mina has a striking CV that shows a wide background of international experience and a severe hunger for more, she stands out for having her feet securely on the ground, for being aware of her roots and for vouching to be an ambassador for Bulgarian abroad. “The world is changing so fast”, she says, “I really hope that I will be a good representative of my country and my region where ever I am in the world”.

We are all over the world and this makes our success “Why would you like to work for De Lage Landen?” Babacar Cassé corners me in the friendliest fashion as I walk into a hotel room where he has been conducting face-to-face interviews with young graduates from all around the world. By Méabh McMahon
The 25 year old is grinning from ear to ear and holds out a warm hand for me to shake. Although I am not there to be interviewed for a job, I shake his hand with joy and spare a thought for the lucky job-hunters who get to be greeted by him as they nervously manoeuvre their way into the recruitment room. Few years ago, the young Parisian was wearing the shoes of the job-seekers at the 2007 job fair organized by Careers International, but now, Babacar Cassé is in a managerial position at the global of asset-based financing solutions and consumer finance products, De Lage Landen. His youth is reflected in his enthusiasm and he is more than willing to share his path to success with me and offer some advice for other ‘twenty something year-olds’ hoping to follow his footsteps. When he was just 22, Babacar Cassé graduated with a Masters degree from the University Paris-Sud XI. The city slicker went on semesters abroad that took him to both Sweden and Spain. Upon graduation, he sauntered onto the International Management Traineeship that De Lage Landen provides and found himself dealing with large business transactions in a short space of time. Today, his working week is divided between his base office in Eindhoven in the Netherlands and at least one to two days a week in a range of international destinations in Europe. “I sometimes think that I have a suitcase job”, he laughs, “and I love it”.
18
However, he warns young graduates that his travelling is done with rationale and his company will not be looking at young graduates who are just in search of a jetsetting, champagne drinking lifestyle smooching clients all over the globe. “That’s not reality”, he warns. “This is hard work”, he assures. “I only happen to travel when I have a key business reason and when it is beneficial and for the interest of De Lage Landen.” With fluent French, English, Spanish , basic knowledge of Dutch and oodles of personality, Babacar is the perfect ambassador for a company abroad. “But this is not a travel agency”, he assures. “Nobody is sent abroad just for the sake of it”. In other words, if you think you want an international career just to jet set around the continent on a first class ticket, think again. “Music is my vice”, says Babacar on a more personal note. “Soul, R&B and Jazz are melodies that are great part of me”. Picturing the youngster on stage performing, I ask him whether it was always his dream to be a successful businessman. “Not at all”, he laughs, “Younger, I wanted to be a professional football player”. In fact, he started playing when he was just 11 but unfortunately he was not able to fulfill his dream. “Maybe that is where you get the drive and the lack of arrogance?” I inquire. “Well, I don’t know”, he says almost sheepishly “but I know one thing for sure in this business world, be ambitious but not cocky”. “
High Flyers, Top Careers E-GUIDE
You must always be driven, show your hunger for bigger things and your willingness but never dare to step on anyone’s toes as it can often backfire against you”. “I love team work”, he admits implying that the most successful employee will be one who can work in harmony with their colleagues. “Make sure you stand out though or can offer something special”, he finishes.
However, despite his hectic work schedule and his international lifestyle, Babacar Cassé has his feet on the ground and indicates that although his professional life means a lot for him, happiness in life reside in being a great dad and successfully raising children!
Babacar was born and raised in the near outskirts of Paris. But even though he is still 25, he has already spent 6 years abroad and now he resides in the city of Eindhoven. “I am a city boy”, he smiles, so sometimes the Dutch city seems small to him but he never gets bored due to his diverse, international colleagues and constant professional challenges. “De Lage Landen is a medium size company with the attitude of a large international company”, he says. “I love this element”. “We are all over the world and this makes our success”, he beams. Picturing what they manage to achieve through groundbreaking business ideas and drive, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are businessmen Babacar often looks at as a great examples of success and as such he doesn’t rule out the option of setting up his own business when I propose it. At just 25, the world is his oyster.
“You must always be driven, show your hunger for bigger things and your willingness but never dare to step on anyone’s toes as it can often backfire against you. I love team work.”

A few facts about women in science & technology The science and technology sector is vital in our knowledge economy, producing a revenue of more than 963.5 billion euros in Europe. That’s why it is essential that the sector continues to attract new talent to grow and develop.
Women, who represent 60% of university graduates, are a reservoir of talent for science, technology and innovation. However, very few choose to study science and technology. The activity rate of women continues to grow while that of men starts to stagnate, so if women were to choose these subjects making careers in these fields, the results in terms of economic growth would be enough to sustain our standard of living. Gender stereotypes in the disciplines as well as in jobs prevent the mindsets of students, parents and even teachers from changing. Teenage girls are influenced by their mothers and teachers, who perhaps do not understand ICT or its related jobs. Girls tend to choose subjects such as Latin, Greek or modern languages but not sciences because in their eyes, these subjects are for “geeks” or the more introvert students. Young girls don’t want to work in a male-dominated environment where they think they will not be able to find their place. They are also influenced by certain female role models that perhaps push them towards choosing careers in “health care” instead of opting for a scientific career. The representation that women have jobs in Science&Technology is far from ideal. Why are we suddenly so interested in an issue that has existed for years?
• For some years young people have shunned the sciences. In 1995 in Europe, 40% of secondary school students went on to study sciences at university, compared to only 26% in 2004. • To be more competitive, Europe set an objective to increase its scientific and technological potential by 700,000 people by 2015. • The West is not making the most of the pool of talented women despite the fact that women represent more than 60% of university graduates! Many women tend to veer towards human sciences or towards scientific subjects that are directly linked to humans or nature such as medicine or biology. Figures from the industrial or technical higher education are similarly alarming. Whether it’s in the long or short cycle, more than 90% of students in technology are male. More than 35% of women in computer science do not want to make a career in this field, which radically reduces the number of women in technology available to work in companies. In 2004, in the European Union there were only 28% of women in research. This figure included 50% of researchers in medical sciences, 30% in natural sciences and 22% in engineering and technology.
• Because of fresh concerns about replacement rates in the sciences following the mass exodus to retirement.

When it comes to careers, the number of women at “the top” is increasing but it still remains extremely low. As elsewhere in an organisation, the higher we go up the hierarchy the more scarce women become. The situation of women in research, public or private, is positively evolving and it is important that education continues to reinforce this message. In just a few years the number of female researchers in private and public research has doubled. The presence of women in science and technology careers is increasing proportionately more rapidly than that of men, but still it’s too slow to ensure adequate diversity within teams or to respond to the needs of those companies looking to recruit women trained in science and technology. In Europe the situation of women in managerial positions in science and technology remains low with only 5.8% of women compared to 11.3% of women in natural sciences, 15.6% in medical sciences, 16.6% in social sciences and 23.9% in human sciences. Europe desperately needs more scientists to achieve its objective of becoming a more competitive knowledge economy in the world (Objective of the Lisbon Treaty 2010). So, how can we continue to ignore half of the talent?

Adopt a different perspective Did you know that talent was more important than capital, strategy, or even Research & Development? Were you aware that this demand would grow over the next twenty years making talent the most important corporate resource in the world? By Méabh McMahon
The revelation was concluded by the international management-consulting firm McKinsey & Company and although it is great news for graduates, it is quite the concern for recruiters. Meet Sharon MacBeath – the Scotswoman, who has been working in HR for years is a regular opponent in this ‘war for talent’ but the likeable business woman is more than happy to share some secrets with young graduates about how they should make the most of this fact. Over an informal chat at the Careers International fair in Brussels, she advises all young graduates to embrace their brilliance when it comes to job hunting and fight those butterflies away. “Be yourself”, Sharon begins,“ there is absolutely no reason to be nervous before a job interview or in any process of job hunting”. The Glaswegian, who currently works as the Senior Vice-President for Corporate Human Resources for the international Fashion, Lifestyle and Home Furnishing leader, Redcats says how despite the fact that the company had 14 105 employees at the end of last year, they are constantly crying out for bright, young graduates. Redcats is based in over 31 different countries around the world. It currently manages over 70 merchant websites and calculates about 26 million active customers a year. That is why Sharon is a strong advocate of international careers. She even has one herself.

“I always dreamt of living in Paris”, she confesses, “I wanted an exciting, international job”. And sure enough, the entrepreneur moved to the capital of France back in 1991 and is yet to go back to the Scottish lowlands. Although she thoroughly enjoyed growing up in the city famous for fried mars bars, the HR expert was seduced by Paris and its people. When she arrived twenty years ago, she did so as a graduate in Psychology Management. While she juggled a job in HR at Mc Donalds, she picked up a master in Human Resources from La Sorbonne University and then an MBA at the international graduate business school and research institution. She proceeded to found the EMDS Consulting company in 1995 before being headhunted by Rexam Beauty & Pharma to take on an exciting position as HR director. “But why should we strive for international careers?” I ask. “Should we not just stay locally and work locally?”, I provoke. “No way”, beams Sharon. “An international career can be one of the most enriching experiences in the world”, she says with an endearing Scottish accent. “And the most fascinating thing is that the challenges for companies are the same. Whether you are in Edinburgh or Ecuador, the problems are the same. The difference is how companies go about dealing with these problems”. Sharon comes across as a strong believer in diversity and multiculturalism in the workplace. “Adopt a different perspective”, she says. “Be open-minded”.
High Flyers, Top Careers E-GUIDE
Since 2005, Sharon has been working as the Senior Vice President, Human Resources reporting to the CEO. As head of HR, not only does she have to assist and advice company managers about HR issues and ensure the personal ongoing development of employees but also she has to constantly recruit what she calls in her words, ‘fresh blood’.
thousands managers from 77 companies put their heads together to come up with the conclusion that companies needed ‘smart, sophisticated young business graduates, who are technologically literate, globally astute and operationally agile’, just like the bright young graduates attending the International careers fair in Brussels that afternoon.
“But how can we get ‘sucked up’ by a desirable international company like Redcats”, I ask on behalf of all the young, bright graduates in the room. “Be confident and be clear”, Sharon says. Express your goals clearly. “It is less about what you know”, she warns. “Just be curious and interested”. Every so often, Sharon bursts into fluent French to greet some acquaintances and ex-colleagues. Although she loves her job, she stresses the importance of juggling both ‘work and play’ and says that nothing makes her happier than spending some time with her little daughter. Sometimes on the weekend, she goes ski-ing or golfing and when she has time, to a contemporary dance show in Paris. As I bid farewell to the Celtic lady with the Parisian mannerisms, I think about the amazing futures that the 300 odd graduates in the room could have, ‘the fresh blood’ that Sharon offered some tips to - the crème de la crème of international talent. McKinsey & Company indirectly referred to this group of graduates when compiling their report last year about the ‘war for talent’. Over six

Any MBA equips you to
think it.
A Lancaster MBA qualifies you to
do it.
UK-based one year Full-time or two year Executive MBA. The Lancaster MBA. Find out more at www.lums.lancs.ac.uk/mba
International triple accreditation
Now is the time to invest in business knowledge, to develop management techniques and to widen your global understanding. Change, challenge and uncertainty in the business environment call for people who are confident in the spotlight, assured of their knowledge and considered in action.
Why an MBA? Get the knowledge: An MBA is the programme of choice for managers who aim to enhance their skills and develop understanding of a broad range of business disciplines. It covers the core elements of business, such as operations, finance, marketing and strategy. You will become conversant and effective in the main areas and an expert in your chosen fields. You will be a valued member of an organisation because you have a wide spectrum of knowledge. Be confident: The MBA has the potential to be life-changing in a career perspective and on a personal level. It tests you to the limit. Find new confidence in your own abilities and the excitement of being able to work across disciplines and with diverse teams. Even in the most provocative of situations, you will have the tools to complete the job.
Get the skills: The MBA is another year of work. You may have the designation of student, but the work you will do is as time-consuming and throws up similar challenges to any managerial role. You’ll be a self-starter, team worker, negotiator, change manager, project manager and counsellor – all skills that will be essential for your post-MBA career. Organisations seeking MBAs know that they are hiring people who join with highly developed, business critical skills. Be in demand: You will have the advantage of being perceived as one who has demonstrated the self-confidence to make the investment in yourself, or, if you are sponsored by your organisation, as someone who has already been recommended for top tier investment. A strong combination of background, MBA and career target will set you on a winning track.
Students with their New Venture Challenge client
Why the Lancaster MBA? Think it: Mindful management, the ethos of the Lancaster MBA, spans collaboration, reflection and mindfulness. Through critical thinking on the impact of self on business, social and political events, students challenge their own assumptions and behaviours and those of others. It is a rare opportunity, one that in today’s busy world is frequently put aside for things that seem more important. But in an age when the impact of each individual on the stability of society and environment is widely acknowledged, developing reflective skills for personal effectiveness has never been more apposite.
The Lancaster MBA. Think it, do it. http://www.lums.lancs.ac.uk/mba
Do it: All Lancaster MBA programmes incorporate the opportunity to integrate learning with doing. Graduates engage the work environment having experienced up to three opportunities to work with organisations to use the knowledge they have gained. This means they have not only ideas and theories about what to do, but also know what actually happens when they are applied. They have the business models and the skills to adapt to real situations. Subsequently they’ll be employed not as junior recruits, but as established MBA managers.
Candidates’ Voices: Shiraz The immaculately dressed investment banker only graduated from ICHEC Business School (Brussels) a few months ago, but his business case is already packed and he is ready to work in some of the most prestigious financial centres in the world, namely in NyLonKong. By Méabh McMahon
Ever heard of NyLonKong? The concept came about a few years ago when the American news magazine TIME started to use it. In the words of TIME, the expression refers to the creators of the world we live in - New York, London and Hong Kong. Over in Belgium, there is a 25-year-old man called Shiraz who is on the exact same wavelength as TIME magazine. He talks about NyLonKong with remarkable enthusiasm. The immaculately dressed investment banker only graduated from ICHEC Business School (Brussels) a few months ago, but his business case is already packed and he is ready to work in some of the most prestigious financial centres in the world, namely in NyLonKong. “My dream is to work in a big office at the top of a high rise building as one of the top executives of a huge, international company like Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs”, he begins. Obviously unalarmed by the amount work such a high profile job would bring, Shiraz says, “Sure I love stress, pressure and deadlines”. The financial expert oozes confidence and talks about the euro sovereign debt crisis with the knowledge you would expect from the business editor of a financial news desk. “The future of the euro looks gloomy”, he says before chattering vivaciously about the Eurobond market and about the uncertainty of Belgium’s investment climate. Shiraz believes that in order to succeed you must carry confidence. “You just have to show that you know what you are talking about”, he says, “then everything will be alright”, he finishes with an almost Bob Marley wink! But the young graduate does seem to know what he is talking about. Where did he pick up all that knowledge? “I love Maths”, he says chuckling, “I must have a head for numbers”. He certainly does. The young Belgian with Asian roots was brought up in the coastal Flemish city of Ostend. When he was in
40
secondary school, he spent 15 hours a week studying applied science and maths, something that made him realise that he was destined to study business engineering. He did just that and even incorporated one year of Erasmus into the equation and took off to neighbouring country Netherlands. “I love travelling too”, he says before talking in depth about his frequent trips around Europe, Eastern Europe, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Today, the aspiring Richard Branson works in the international quarter of Brussels for the global financial services company, the Bank of New York Mellon. His day starts at about 8.30am and is spent dealing with clients from all over the world. The most important aspect for him is contact with clients and understanding their needs. At the end of the day, Shiraz enjoys kicking some ball with his friends or rubbing shoulders with other international high flyers over a drink on the famous Place Luxembourg in Brussels. Unlike most financial hotshots, Shiraz is not driven by money. “I am driven by knowledge”, he insists, “by learning new things”. “I am really excited about my international future”, he says, “bring it on!”

You have to be globally aware Frank Rutten currently coordinates Cargill’s two-year European Graduate Program. He goes face-to-face with young graduates all over Europe for training sessions and events. Sessions take place in locations like Mechelen, Barcelona or Geneva and provide young graduates with soft skills in communication, global mind-set & cultural awareness and problem solving & decision making. By Méabh McMahon
On the west coast of Africa surrounded by Ghana, Mali and Liberia is the Ivory Coast. Although it is just one country, since recent Presidential elections, it now claims to have two Presidents and two governments. Frank Rutten and his colleagues are astutely aware of this political deadlock. The tall, charismatic businessman is the European Graduate Recruitment Coordinator for the international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services, ‘Cargill’. Although he is based in an office over seven thousand kilometers away from the turmoil, Rutten talks about the political unrest and the violence in West Africa as if it was happening in his own backyard. “This is what it means to have an international career”, he says, “this is why you have to be globally aware”. Although something might happen thousands of miles away, he and his colleagues are directly affected. The thing is, the Republic of Côte D’Ivoire produces approximately 40% of the world’s raw cocoa and Frank Rutten’s employer Cargill has been operating there since 1997. “When we munch on a delicious piece of chocolate, nobody ever wonders about the supply chain that actually converts the cocoa beans into the tasty treats”, says Rutten before talking enthusiastically about a career with Cargill. “Most young graduates have never heard of Cargill”, he regrets, “but once I ask them if they have ever put Labello on their lips, they just smile”. The thing is, Cargill is a main
46
provider of cocoa butter found in products like Labello. He admits that Cargill is not a product that you could visualize on the supermarket shelves but “it is there”, he says before proceeding to launch into a fascinating lecture about the whole food supply chain. “Cargill is also present in McDonald´s restaurants all over the world”, he says. Frank Rutten wasn’t always so knowledgeable about world trade and sustainable development. He is a business and economics graduate who backpacked around the world for a while and worked at a few different companies before landing the post in HR with Cargill. He tells me this so that young graduates in the same situation can feel at ease. The thing is, when Frank Rutten reached the tender age of 30, he was working for a recruitment agency in his native Amsterdam but feeling that the focus was too much on quantity instead of quality for his liking, he filled his waterproof rucksack and took off to South Africa for a few months. The eyeopening adventure made him realise that his heart was with talent and he wanted to work in Human Resources. When he came back home, the financial crisis was showing its ugliest side yet, but Rutten was very lucky and walked into the Cargill graduate recruitment programme. “Everyone needs to eat”, he laughs, “we all need our sugar, salt and bread”. As Cargill is involved in the processing of all these products, the Dutchman was not affected by the financial crisis and secured a full-time job with the American multi-national.

Now he dedicates his time to hunting bright young sparks like himself. “I am constantly on the look out for youngsters with leadership potential”, he begins. “Analytical skills are also very useful”. Although Cargill is a pragmatic company, Rutten insists that it can be useful to be qualified to Masters level in order to be ensured of a future with Cargill. “Depending on the PHD, it can also be of value for Cargill”. Frank Rutten currently coordinates Cargill’s two-year European Graduate Program. He goes face-to-face with young graduates all over Europe for training sessions and events. The more he describes it, the more attractive it sounds. Sessions take place in locations like Mechelen, Barcelona or Geneva and provide young graduates with soft skills in communication, global mind-set & cultural awareness and problem solving & decision making. Every so often he alludes to the general working environment at Cargill, the vast number of nationalities involved and the daily interaction between comrades from all over the world. The thing is, in terms of revenue, Cargill is the largest privately held company in the US. Last year, Cargill raised a whopping 107 billion US dollars in revenue. The family business that was founded in 1865 is a catch for many young graduates looking for a diverse, international career. It is involved in numerous areas like trading, processing and distributing grains, trading in energy, steel and transport, the manufacture and sale of livestock and feed and the production of many food ingredients. It even has a large financial arm that manages financial risks in the markets.
In his free time, Frank Rutten loves playing sports like hockey and soccer and escapes to the ski-slopes when he can. But his eye never seems to leave the ball. He is socially aware and in touch with his role of European Graduate Recruitment Coordinator and the role that Cargill plays on the world stage. “You need to have guts”, he says before getting up to leave. “Be assertive, be pro-active, be yourself and ask questions”. That’s what Cargill looks for in graduates. And if I say so myself, savour that chocolate bar the next time you indulge and think about the process it went through to be made as since the political turmoil began in the Ivory Coast, there has been a ban on cocoa exports from the country and many are concerned about a chocolate shortage. So make sure you are aware of that if you decide to have coffee with Frank Rutten. Then you can look forward to an exciting job in Cargill and having a daily impact on the world.
“I am constantly on the look out for youngsters with leadership potential”

Candidates’ Voices: Vanessa Renowned for its history and culture, its name in English translates to ‘southern capital’. The second biggest commercial centre in East China after Shanghai, it is currently one of the most important cities in China. It is the home to over 5 million people. One of them is a bright young business professional that goes by the name of Vanessa. Over 25 years ago, she was born there, in Nanjing, the capital of the Jiangsu province.By Méabh McMahon
Today Vanessa lives and works in the capital of France. Unfazed by the fact that she is over 8000 kilometers from home, she refers constantly to her lifelong dream of having an international career. “I always knew I would come to Europe”, she insists, “so when I was 22, I packed my suitcase and left my hometown”. Vanessa’s ultimate aim is to set up her own business, but for the moment, she is concentrating on building up her contacts and experience and in her words ‘diversifying her background’. Although Vanessa has a business head on her shoulders, she is fascinated by European culture and history. When she has some free time, she thoroughly enjoys traveling and has already been all over the continent thanks to low cost airlines and the Schengen agreement. Thanks to the border-less zone, politically known as the Schengen Area, she can travel to 25 different EU countries without even having to show her visa. ‘I adore Europe’, she assures before mentioning the variety of diverse things that can be seen and done here. Along with her love for Europe is a love for modern European languages. One would think mastering fluent English would be hard enough for a Chinese native but Vanessa loves languages so much that she even speaks fluent French. She spent two years in the 6th biggest city in France in Nantes studying a Masters in Purchasing and Logistics. During that period, she even found herself perfecting her English skills in Washington when she was enrolled at the American university on the International Trade and Business programme for one semester. Immediately after graduating from the Audencia Nantes School of Management, Vanessa was offered an internship in Brussels with the multinational cooperation Proctor & Gamble. As a strategic purchasing intern, she cooperated with a global team on a new initiative that would bring over 4 million US dollars in savings to the Asian market. Even though her Brussels experience lasted only three months, Vanessa fell in love with
50
the city and its people. “People in Brussels are so diverse and they speak so many languages”, she says. “I felt so comfortable there”. One of the highlights for Vanessa while she was interning at P&G was taking part in a 100-kilometre walk for charity. With only 24 hours to finish it, Vanessa did it and felt greatly inspired afterwards. With no plans to return back home, a driven Vanessa now lives and works in Paris as an employee of the global leader of healthy food and beverages Danone. As a source and supplier developer, the economics graduate spends her working day sourcing, selecting and organising information and data about the fruit market. Along with her team, her role is to develop market risk management strategies for fruits. Although she loves her job, Vanessa also makes the most of her weekends to explore the city.“ That’s the best thing about living abroad”, she says and thanks to the French governments subsidies on cultural visits, she spends her Sunday mornings investigating cultural landmarks like the Louvre and the Georges Pompidou Centre. Just like anyone who lives away from home, Vanessa misses her mum’s cooking especially Beijing roasted duck and dumplings. She also misses cloths shopping in China finding European prices unjustifiably high. But the young professional is so ambitious and curious to discover new things and new people that she is happy enough to leave her life back home in China to climb up the professional ladder here in Europe. She hopes her international career will take her all over the world and see her constantly employed by big corporations like Danone, P&G, Cargill or Nestlé. So, while her friends back home in Nanjing are green with envy, a brave Vanessa braces herself for a long, exciting career in a role where she hopes to have ‘a very positive influence on the daily lives of the people’. She has no crystal ball that will tell her where she will be in 20 years, but she is confident that she will be professionally and personally fulfilled and accompanied by a large family.
