Double-Nickel Party Successful On Saturday, August 13, Van Horn‟s Class of „74 held a celebration of their birthday. Yes, they all will turn 55 this year thus the name „double nickel‟. The event was funfilled and food-filled in the Mike Onka Memorial Building in Sugar Creek. The purpose of the “party” was to raise funds for the R. J. Won’t you join us in supporting VHHS? The VHHS Alumni Association was formed nearly four years ago when the battle to bring Van Horn HS into the Independence School District ended. Formerly a Kansas City District school, Van Horn had become so run down and “broken”, it gained the reputation of being the worst school in Kansas City. In seeing the absence of pride and the disarray of the once beautiful Van Horn High School they had attended, alumni rolled up their sleeves and organized to bring back the honor of Van Horn as they knew it. With restoration ongoing, students are beginning to appreciate the effort set forth. In addition, the City of Independence, Mayor and Council, have put forth a plan to improve the desirability of living in western Independence through economic development. Your membership in VHHSAA (or direct monetary donation) will be invested in further improvements in the building and educational achievements of your school.
