he arc we are trying to chart out today, a journey that most job aspirants go through in college - campus placements, followed by an inclusive list of the best colleges/universities across India in terms of providing the best placements to students. Campus Placement or Campus Recruitment drives are conducted in various educational institutes for

providing job opportunities to the students who are pursuing their particular academic courses. It is an effective way for organisations to engage emerging talent. Keeping in mind the importance of the campus placement programs, it is vital for students to prepare adequately for these programs and make sure that they put their best foot forward. There are two types of Campus Placement programs:

On-Campus Placement Drives: In On-Campus placement drives, companies visit institutes to select final year students and the selection process depends upon a student’s ability to workhard, technical capabilities and focus, the perimeters on which he/she is evaluated. Off-Campus / Pool Campus Placement Drives: In Off Campus placement drives, recruitment is conducted at a common

COVER STORY

It is vital for students to prepare adequately for campus placement programs and put their best foot forward place. It may be a particular institute or a public place where students from different colleges/universities assemble and take part in the various stages of the campus placement drive. A number of these drives are advertised as ‘Job Fairs’. Steps and Preparation Tips for Campus Placements The main objective of the placement process is to identify the talented individuals. The criteria adopted for selection by most companies are variable in nature and selection process is as follows: Skill Assessment: A skill assessment test, often in the form of an aptitude gathering exercise, is a formative first step in most of the campus placement exercises. A written evaluation, though more likely to be a computer-based test, it is generally conducted on the college campus, either directly by the company or through an assessment partner (like the AMCAT Test). If you’re looking to practice for your aptitude test, AMCAT sample papers should come in handy. Why skill assessment? Generally, aptitude tests and skill assessment exercises cover the following areas: • Logical ability • Domain knowledge • Quantitative aptitude • English competency • Suitability towards specific skill-sets Homework Gather opinions: Talk to test-takers who have gone through an earlier exercise for the company or role that you’re slated for. Practice a lot: Take practice runs for all of these skill assessments, by accessing

different mock tests for these areas. Go through your feedback reports and make a conscious effort in improving on recurring weaknesses. Work on core subjects, equally: Your competence in your core subject will remain at the centre of your chances, although different companies (technical and non-technical) give different weightage to skill assessment modules. Take feedbacks seriously: Most of the mock tests and exercises end on score aggregates and feedback outlines. Take notes and work on your preparation accordingly. And then refine your answers accordingly. Group Discussion/Panel Interview: Group Discussions or Panel Interviews, in a campus placement exercise, is a round where the interviewer(s) get to observe a set of candidates and see how they would react in situations or communicate over their convictions in a problem-solving mode. Different from a group discussion, the panel interview is a more formal exercise. Brought together either formally or through an informal discussion format, the Group Discussion or GD checks students on confidence, original presentation of ideas, flow of thought and conduct in a group. While the group discussion has interviewer(s) observing the actions of the candidate in a group, the panel interview has several of them, connecting

with the candidate either individually or in groups. Why a group discussion? The group discussion and panel interview check the following: • Flow of thought • Presentation skills (in a group, individually) • Stress management / ability to handle ‘spotlight’ • Reaction to contrasting thoughts and opinions Focus Clarity of thought: Comprehension of a situation, working through a logical argument and presenting it adequately are the three traits you need to showcase in this case. Start with a critical thinking approach and move towards an analysisbased approach in real life. Work on your communication skills: Work with these factors in mind• Who is your audience • What is the problem you’re discussing • What is the language (tone, jargon) that you’re communicating in • Who benefits from a solution and how does yours impact them • What are the salient points that everyone else is raising Address issues in comprehension: Take your cues from everyone else, including the interviewer, and build on your responses accordingly. May 2018 < CAREERCONNECT < 21

COVER STORY

If you are looking to practice for your aptitude test, AMCAT sample papers should come in handy Technical Interview: Technical interview is an engagement which is domain and role-specific in nature, aimed at evaluating how good the student is in his/her core, with his/her languages (the programming kind) and what he/ she would exactly bring to the job at hand. It can be an interview with the project manager or supervisor; it can be an assessment on the core subject or a situational test. What does a technical interview assess? • Grasp on domain – programming knowledge, core skills • Ability to mould to role • Practical application of knowledge to real-world situations • Clarity in thought and articulation Exercise Background research: Begin with the areas/domains that the company works on and the common challenges it can face 22 < CAREERCONNECT < May 2018

in terms of products/services and their execution. Practice coding challenges: Work on multiple practice sets for these• Q&A Trivia Sessions • Take Home Coding Challenges • Pair Programming • Whiteboarding Similarly, you can work on practice sessions more conducive with your core subject and request for questions in that segment. Prep your Interview strengths: A technical interview is also conducted in an interview format; face to face, online, on video (think Skype) or telephonically. Prepping for it with the aid of mock interview formats, like the mock AI is also a good way to gear your practice quotient. Here’s How to Crack

Job Interview Like a Pro Do you have a job interview scheduled? Don’t worry, be confident, read and research properly about the organization and dress-up well – you will surely get your dream job. This article will help you with in-depth information on the best ways to get hired in companies of your choice. By Ritika Arora Bhola

G

etting placed in a company of his/her choice is a dream of every jobseeker. In today’s time, with growing exposure, industries going global, digitisation and computerisation, taking over, MNCs investing in global market etc., there are ample of lucrative job opportunities for young professionals who are well-trained in their specific fields. MNCs are in dire need of trained professionals and keep conducting placement sessions/interviews in varied parts across the world. Indian professionals are not getting jobs only in India but in abroad also. But you should prepare for the interview well and be well-versed with the organisation you are applying in. Mentioned below are 34 < CAREERCONNECT < May 2018

some useful tips to get placed. Best Ways to Get Hired Before the interview, make sure you do your homework well – which includes thorough research work about the organization you have applied in. Do spend a few hours and read as much as you can from various sources – talk to friends or Google it. Often candidates just go through the company website and forget to read the latest updates or news on the Internet. By doing so, you not only know with which company you will be associated but also you will be confident during the interview. Social media sites like Twitter and

Facebook can also be a best source to know what the employees say. See if they are talking about a product launch or any development, expansion plans – it will help you initiate a conversation. No matter what position you have applied for — engineering, sales, marketing, HR, finance etc., — you should always study about each stream. If hired, it will be easy for you to create value for the people associated. There are different ways of interviewing. For eg, some companies start with general questions and later bring up questions related to the subject. Some ask brain teasers while others give a standard set of typical interview and

Video: With the advancement of technology, MNCs usually prefer video interviews as an alternative method to the traditional telephone interview. Organizations screen candidates via Skype, FaceTime or YouTube. Video interviews usually last for around 30 minutes.

leadership questions. Asking the recruiter or HR about the interview format well in advance is not a big deal. This will help you in preparing for the interview. One can easily find lists of common interview questions on the Internet— Prepare answers and remember them during the interview. It’s likely that you’ll be asked certain questions like what and why you’re interested in this particular role and company – what are your strengths and weaknesses, hobbies and prior work experience, if any. So prepare answers to these questions well in advance. Dress-up formally. Maintain hygiene and look good. Remember first impression is last impression. Your personality can reflect what kind of person you are. You can do as many mock interviews as you can possibly with a friend. You’ll be much better at answering. Reflect Positivity - Be nice and gentle with any staff member you meet before or after the interview and, if you’re feeling nervous, remind yourself that the worst thing that could happen is you simply not getting the job, that’s it. If not this job, then apply in some other organization. During the interview, avoid talking about any personal problems unless they ask, and never badmouth your previous employers. Body language - Give a firm handshake to your interviewer(s) before and after the session. Once you’re seated, sit naturally without slouching in your chair or leaning on the desk. Throughout the interview, remember to smile frequently and retain eye contact. 36 < CAREERCONNECT < May 2018

Clarity - Answer all questions clearly and concisely, evidencing your most relevant skills, experiences and achievements. It’s perfectly acceptable to pause before answering a difficult question to give yourself thinking time, or asking for clarification if, at first, you’re unsure what the question means. When answering, don’t speak too quickly. Speak politely with poise Enthusiasm - It’s important that you allow your personality to shine throughout. Do ask thought-provoking questions at appropriate moments. Both of these strategies will demonstrate that you’re genuinely interested in the role and listening closely to the interviewer. Types of interview There are several different types of interview:

Telephonic: Telephonic interview is quite common. Some employers use this method generally to eliminate unsuitable candidates. Successful applicants are usually then invited for a face-to-face interview. Telephone interviews usually last for around 30 minutes.

Face-to-face: The most common type of interview, face-to-face takes place with either one interviewer or, more commonly, a panel. In some rare cases, you may interview alongside other candidates and questioning can either be strengths-based or competency-based. Face-to-face interviews usually last for between one and two hours.

Assessment centers: Used primarily by employers to compare the performance of several candidates in a range of situations, assessment centres typically involve tasks such as presentations, group work and written tests. They usually last for one day. What to take 1. A bottle of water 2. A pen and notepad 3. Money 4. Photo ID (e.g. your passport or driving licence) 5. Your academic certificates and work examples 6. Your CV, application form and interview invitation What to wear to an interview The interview dress code is usually formal. Men can opt for: a dark suit and tie combination. However, things

FEATURE

During interview, avoid talking about any personal problems unless they ask, and never badmouth your previous employers are slightly more open for women. You could wear a dress, trouser suit, or a skirt and blouse; black, navy or brown are the safest colours. Women can wear Indian attire as well. You should also: Avoid wearing too much jewellery or make-up Cut and clean your fingernails Ensure that any briefcase or handbag you take is smart Polish your shoes Tidily arrange your hair Use aftershave or perfume sparingly Wash and iron your outfit 38 < CAREERCONNECT < May 2018

After the interview Once you are done with your interview and about to leave, let the interviewer know that you’re available to answer any follow-up questions. If you feel your interview went well, you could email the interviewer later in the day or probably the next day, thanking them for their time. Sometimes, companies call up candidates for the second round of interview, which aims to more closely scrutinise what you and any other remaining candidates can bring to

the role. Prepare for your second interview just like your first, but you should also: •

Request feedback from your interviewer • For the second round, R&D extensively about the organisation than for the first interview In the end, even if you don’t get the desired job, do not get disheartened because something better is still waiting for you. So simply ask the recruiter for the feedback and apply in some other organisation.

INTERVIEW

Promoting skill based and research driven quality education India’s first skill-based private university, Rabindranath Tagore University’s focus lies in the holistic development of a student in order to ensure the effective application of knowledge for a secure future. Santosh Kumar Choubey, Founder, AISECT Group of Universities, in an interview with Charu Pandey, talks about the university’s success in bridging the skill and ICT gap between urban and rural India, new initiatives, and its efforts to bring about inclusive changes through quality education and training. How has the AISECT Group of Universities evolved under your leadership over the years? How successful have you been in your efforts? The AISECT group of Universities started in 2006 with the launch of the Dr CV Raman University (CVRU) in Chhattisgarh. It was the first private university of Central India and in a tribal belt to have an appropriate research infrastructure and funding. We wanted to set up universities that would provide world-class and affordable higher education at locations that were in dire need of it. Therefore, CVRU was modeled in a way that it made quality higher education accessible in an isolated region; all at an affordable fee structure. The success of CVRU over time has inspired us to delve further into the higher education space. Today, we have campuses in four states – Rabindranath Tagore University (formerly known as AISECT University) in Bhopal - Madhya Pradesh, the AISECT University in Jharkhand and the Dr CV Raman University in Bihar – under its umbrella. Moreover, our distance learning courses are extremely popular across the country. We are India’s first group of universities that has mandated compulsory skills education in all degree and diploma programs. Our higher education institutions are located in areas where there had been a massive gap in terms of quality education, skill development and exposure to opportunities. What are the emerging careers in the field of education which would create a different impact in the times to come? We are a pioneer of innovation in the field of Skill Development. We strongly believe that employability is directly linked to skill-ability of an individual. Hence the challenge in the upcoming times will be to align higher education with skill education. Our universities offer career options which are non conventional and practical. We have courses like agriculture, paramedical and nursing that cater to the employability factor of a student.

What is the use of case studies used in graduate and undergraduate business education? Case studies give an understanding o f u n i q u e n e s s o f eac h business situation. They also expose students to the realities and hard challenges of various business scenarios. They challenge students to think originally and practically and come out with innovative solutions. Case studies and case analysis have a central place in our TeachingLearning process. Our students do case analysis and case development on a regular basis. There are a prescribed number of cases for each course which the student has to do mandatorily. How does your institute incorporate entrepreneurial values among its students? We inculcate entrepreneurial values among students by inviting entrepreneurs to deliver lectures and to give expert comments on the product development exercises or business development plans of our students. We conduct workshops on entrepreneurship in collaboration with NEN WADHWANI Foundation. We have an MOU with this organization. MBA vs. PGDM is a common dilemma for B-school students. Discuss the potential of each of the two degrees? MBA and PGDM programs are both approved by AICTE and they broadly have the same syllabus. However, PGDM course that we offer is structured in a far superior way as evident from the following practices of ours. 1. Trimester pattern that we follow is enabling us to have larger number of courses of study 2. Regular industry visits are arranged as a part of PGDM to give students a feel of industry realities 3. International study tours are arranged for PGDM students to give them a global vision of business management 4. 100 per cent of summer internships and final placements for all registered students are being secured 5. Our faculty is largely drawn from industry. Besides, most of them have foreign exposure

Once Available to a Few Privileged Students, Adaptive Learning is Now Accessible to All

P

Beas Dev Ralhan

Adaptive Learning has the potential to solve a crucial classroom challenges. Adaptive learning systems use machine learning to help personalise the presentation of learning material based on their learning speed, interest and problem areas

ersonalised learning is based on the premise that no two students learn the same way; their learning pace and style vary. Therefore, there can be no correct or single sequence to learning. This one-size-fits-all approach adopted by traditional learning systems leads to discrimination amongst students; while some are termed smart, others get labelled as unsmart. Personalised learning identifies learning gaps and mitigates those to ensure that the student makes progress. It is a more efficient way of learning as it caters to individual learning needs. However, personalized learning requires disproportionate resources because it involves understanding how students learn, how much they know and their interest levels. The call for an interest in personalised learning is not new. It dates back to almost a century ago, with educators frowning upon the proliferation of mass schooling. For instance, in the 1920s, Carleton Washburne, an American education reformer, conducted an experiment in Illinois. He devised a strategy that came to be called programmed instruction, a precursor to personalised learning. It stated that while certain essentials were needed to be mastered by students to make learning progress, students also needed to be allowed to make learning progress at their own pace with no strict standards to adhere to. History is marked with many similar initiatives to boost personalised learning, but none of these efforts were sustained due to the lack of finance and other resources like highlyskilled teachers. Personalised learning available, but not practical Initially, implementing personalised learning was a tedious affair. It needed an ideal student-to-teacher ratio where a skilled teacher could give individualised attention to each student in class strength of 6 to 8 students. Only a select few elite schools were able to provide a personalised learning environment to students. However, a modest school,

62 < CAREERCONNECT < May 2018

lacking skilled teachers and the ideal student-to-teacher ratio, could not implement personalised learning. Thus, in the absence of such learning opportunities in most schools, parents chose to enrol students in coaching classes or appoint private tutors. The scenario in group coaching classes was not that encouraging either. Appointing skilled private tutors might have been an ideal scenario, but it would certainly have been a costly one. A private teacher for one subject charges approximately ₹ 2,000 to ₹ 5, 000 per student for 1 month. The advent of technology in the education sector has democratised learning, making it available to a larger audience at an affordable cost. Adaptive learning would cost around ₹ 200–500 for each student per month. Moreover, this can help even a less-skilled teacher to facilitate quality learning to students. Technology brings personalised learning to all In the last few decades, technology has gratified humans with many innovations and has been able to reach not just a select few, but also the large middle-class population. For instance, international call rates have gone down drastically in the last couple of years, and are no longer perceived as a luxury, but rather a part and parcel of regular life. That is the power of technology in real life, and it can exert far-reaching effects on the education sector too. With technology, more specifically, artificial intelligence making inroads into the education sector, personalised learning has finally got a boost in the form of adaptive learning. It is a tech-mediated way of presenting learning materials as per the individualised learning requirement of each student. Adaptive Learning technology Adaptive learning requires gaining a thorough understanding of a child and his skill level, and also quantifies the knowledge of a child on different topics accurately through different Item

REPORT

For teachers, this can become an important tool to ensure more uniform learning Response Theory (IRT), one of the components of adaptive learning. IRT asks aspirants a mid-level question and based on their response to it, the difficulty level of the next question and the subsequent ones are modified. Questions are asked based on the estimated ability of the candidate; hence, fewer questions suffice in assessing a candidate’s capability. Knowledge Space Theory (KST), one of the other components of adaptive learning technology mimics a teacher’s understanding of students’ learning gaps and requirements accurately. Artificial intelligence (AI) closely monitors the performance and learning pattern of a student and with this data fed into the adaptive platform, KST delivers a knowledge graph for each student. KST maps the accurate knowledge state of a student being assessed within the vast knowledge space. There are two stages – what a student already knows, and what they are ready to learn. There are separate but distinct knowledge sets which have to be mastered by the student in order to master the subsequent ones. For instance, in math, addition has to be mastered to move on to the concept of multiplication. An optimal learning path Artificial intelligence (AI) learns about the performance of students and categorises students as per their learning capacity

and needs. Once the knowledge graph of a particular student has been established, artificial intelligence recommends to students the optimal learning path based on its past experience with this particular student and also with students from the same category. While a kinesthetic learner might learn best with hands-on activity or simulations, a visual learner will gain a clearer understanding of concepts by watching audio-visuals. Adaptive learning technology understands the resource a student best responds to. Thus, learning is more effective when students learn through a tool that interests them the most. We, at Next Education, are working on our adaptive Learning Management System, NextLearningPlatform (NLP). It will present the optimal resource tool from our vast pool of content containing different kinds of components -- simulations, audiovisuals and real-life videos which encourage enquiry-based learning in students. This will ensure that students follow the best-suited learning path and attain learning goals in an optimal time. Besides being time-effective and cost-effective, adaptive learning technology keeps up the interest level of students. Adaptive Learning believes that all knowledge can be mastered by students and helps them reach a desired state of knowledge.
