WELCOME NOTE
w
elcome to the Bridgetown Cruise Terminals Inc. and our beautiful island, Barbados. We are pleased you have chosen us as part of your vacation getaway experience. There is nothing like a cruise vacation - but the time truly flies amidst all that fun. We have designed our cruise terminal with that crucial factor in mind, aimed at assisting you in making the best choices in the precious little time you will spend with us by providing services that range from tourist information and taxis, to products from local crafts and spices to duty free liquor and jewelry. Once you have disembarked the ship, do not be too shy to venture beyond the cruise terminal and sample a bit of the island. Be sure to visit our capital city, Bridgetown, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since June 2011 or go a little further to our other towns, Holetown, Oistins and Speightstown, or visit one of our beautiful beaches, or take an island tour to visit the various exciting locations and breathtakingly scenic spots. When you are ready to take a break, be sure to take in the cuisine of one of our many restaurants or ask your taxi driver to take you to a Bajan rum shop for a cold beer, or a sip of local rum.
There is much to do and see while you are in Barbados and we know it is not possible to do it all in a few hours, so consider Barbados for another cruise, or perhaps your next land based vacation. We at Bridgetown Cruise Terminals Inc. would love to hear from you and we encourage you to visit our Facebook page and post any pics of your visit (#Cruisebarbados) or provide any comments. We wish you a day filled with beautiful memories and we encourage you to save the link to this site and continue to enjoy this publication even after you return home. Enjoy your stay in Barbados! J
acques Cousteau was onto something when he decided to spend his life, exploring and discovering the wonders that the world had to offer. Similarly, to truly experience Barbados to its fullest is to discover a complexity, a diversity, a sense of romance and peaceful calm that truly encapsulates island life and island living. This charming isle is a country soaked in contrasts; modern marvels stand next to historic relics and old and new traditions mix and mingle to create a delightful experience for the explorer at heart. And discovery is simply a matter of arming yourself with a map, a camera and taking a little time to find the hundreds of unspoilt coves, plains, byways or well kept secrets. Not an explorer? Then bask in the glorious weather, fall in love with smiling faces and marvel at the talents of our local artists and

artisans. Hike over the little travelled highlands, scuba dive into the richly populated turquoise waters, consume the knowledge of the ages at a museum, rub shoulders with the elite at a polo match, or soak up the culture of the world at this year’s Holder’s season. Whatever your hearts’ desire you’ll find it here, on the shores of Barbados, and within the pages of Caribbean Dreams Magazine. With so much to do it’s easy to escape the frustrations of mundane day to day of living. Simply…

A. One afternoon a passenger left her ship card, money, credit cards, etc. at Harbour Lights (a local entertainment center & pub) The day was ending and the boat was leaving soon. She was in a state of panic, I took her to the bar quickly while trying to keep her calm, and luckily a staff member had found it and set it aside so she got it back. I brought her back just in the nick of time as the horn was blowing - I love to help people whenever I can, it gives you a great feeling. B. What are some of the strangest things you have ever seen? A family of cats, a Monkey, a boat of passengers dressed in cosplay or leather outfits and finally the moving rock - It’s a heavy boulder that we have moved time and time again that we find out of its position again and again. It’s a mystery!

Food & Drink
CUZZ FISH SHACK Just a stone’s throw away from Carlisle Bay is none other than the famous “Cuzz’s Fish Shack”. As you approach you can smell the sweet aroma of their grilled fish in the air. Long queues are sometimes the order of the day as customers wait for a taste of the delicious
GOLDEN APPLE JUICE and unique cutters for which Cuz has now become quite famous. Locating the shack is quite easy as it is painted a bright aquamarine. The Fish cutter with egg and cheese comes highly recommended, its a great stop for a local experience.
The local golden apple fruit is a Bajan favourite, enjoyed when ripe, made into Jams or delicious juice. Bajan tradition dictates that drinking golden apple juice is good for the skin and heart, so we suggest the next time you are in Barbados ask for a nice cold
glass of Golden apple juice with your meal to enjoy the delicious flavor and the health benefits. Click to download A Golden Apple Drink Recipe Click to access the recipe! DOCKED | 13

St. Nicholas Abbey This plantation style house is one of only three Jacobean styled mansions remaining in the Western Hemisphere. It was built by Benjamin Berringer in 1658, with Tudor arches, decorative chimneys and casement windows, synonymous with Jacobean style. This fantastic plantation styled house was once home to one of the largest sugar plantations and small refinery. Today you can relive the feel of this house built in the 1600s with some of the original pieces still there from 1810. Its close promixity to Cherry Tree Hill and the Morgan Lewis Windmill all form part of the rustic beauty of the north of the island.

GOVERNMENT Barbados was once an island under British rule and as a result the island’s government and governmental practices are a result of British rule. In fact, the island is a constitutional monarchy, and parliamentary democracy, modeled on the British Westminster system. In 1966 Barbados gained its independence from Britain but the island maintains a Prime Minister and 2 parliamentary houses – The House of Assembly (30 ministers) and The Senate, with Elizabeth II, as the head of state (she is represented locally by the island’s Governor General). Notably Barbados has the third oldest parliament in existence.

BRIDGETOWN AKA “TOWN” The city of Bridgetown is Barbados’ largest city, and the commercial centre of the island. With an estimated population of 90,000, this St. Michael town was established by the English settlers in 1628; it was the second town to be settled in Barbados and quickly became one of the main shipping ports in the Caribbean.
01
When the settlers arrived, at what is now called Bridgetown, they discovered a basic bridge, built over a mosquito-infested swamp, in the area of the Careenage. Believing the bridge to be built by the Arawak’s, an indigenous Indian people who once resided in Barbados, they named the area ‘Indian Bridge’. Despite the swamp, the location overlooked Carlisle Bay and was
NATIONAL HEROES SQUARE Once called Trafalgar Square, National Heroes Square is positioned in the heart of Bridgetown, on the northern shore of the Careenage River. Some visitors may be surprised to find that one of the significant monuments found within this square is a statue of Admiral Lord Nelson which was erected in 1813; a testament to Britain’s pervading influences at the time. The statue predates the more famous Nelson’s Column, located in England’s, Trafalgar Square, by roughly 30 years. At the time, Barbadians felt a strong connection to Nelson, who died in 1805 in England’s Battle of Trafalgar, only 6 months after

Trafalgar Square was renamed National Heroes Square in 1999, in honour of ten of Barbados’ most outstanding heroes, who were involved in all aspects of the countrys development. To further honour them, a National Heroes Museum highlighting their ahievements, lies nearby in the Parliament Buildings; open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 4pm. Notably, the Square is not without controversy; to date some Barbadians are of the opinion that the statue should be removed from the Square because Lord Nelson is not recognised as a National Hero.
THE BARBADOS CENOTAPH Also found in National Heroes Square is the Barbados Cenotaph, featuring Barbados’ Coatof-Arms; the four-sided war memorial was originally built in 1921 to commemorate the Barbadian soldiers who died in World War I (1914-1918), and has since also been inscribed with the names of Barbadians who

While soft music and candlelight are part of the setting for a romantic night out, what ends up on your plate, can positively impact the rest of the night too. Certain foods are known to be natural aphrodisiacs and because of their chemical compounds they can certainly add to your romantic night out.

The vegetable is chemically made to boosts testosterone, estrogen, progesterone and histamine production, all needed to reach and intensify the Big O.

This decadent pleasure has phenyl ethylamine, which releases dopamine in the brains pleasure centers and encourages feelings of attraction and excitement, its other compounds encourage relaxation, generate feelings of well being and help lead to this baby’s reputation for increasing sexual desire.

The eating of these additional parts of the pig can be traced back to colonial days, when slave-masters kept the leaner cuts of pork for themselves. The slaves used the remaining parts as the base for the dish we love so much today.

any locals and visitors are trueblue, water babies, easily identified by fresh tans, browned hair, and talk of having a ‘sea bath’ at every possible opportunity. For others a day at the beach may be more infrequent…a cherished thing only enjoyed on holidays or with much planning. How frustrating on that occasion, to finally arrive and settle down to enjoy it, only to realize a few crucial items didn’t make the trip. Things are missing and we could have done better. So for those of us with less experience, and for “Forgetful Jones”. No worries! We

HYDRATE YOURSELF
SUNSCREEN! SUNSCREEN! SUNSCREEN! Don’t Think You Need It? WRONG! You do! Even in the unusual spots, ears, the tops of the feet and hands. You’d also be surprised how many people can get scalp burn parting their hair in the usual place every day, be careful its painful.
IN CASE OF LULL, BREAK GLASS! In case the frolic in the ocean is not enough for a day at the beach, carry a book, a ball, a Frisbee, cards (if you don’t expect the wind), floats (but lather on that sun screen first), boogie boards, paddle and ball, snorkel gear, a water proof camera or any other item that might also keep you entertained.
SUNGLASSES Refuse to add those years to your face by spending your day out squinting. Crows Feet? “Faget about it!” Carry a pair of fashionable sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection or buy a pair, dutyfree from The Sunglass Hut.
A MINI FIRST AID KIT While you may never actually use it, smart adventurers always have a contingency plan. You don’t exactly need a black doctors bag, but BandAids, painkillers, ointment etc … Still a good idea.
Sun + Salt + You = Dehydration. That’s dry skin, damaged hair, burnt lips and dehydrated cells. Use hydrating cream before you arrive and afterwards. Replenish your skin’s moisture to avoid the alligator look in a few years. A bit of conditioner/ detangler (not too much) before the water can go a long, long, way in protecting those follicles. Either spend the day walking back and forth buying water or carry some with you and avoid a head ache later in the day. P.S. Hydrate your lips too.
PACK A HAT “I’m too sexy for my Hat, too sexy for my Hat! What you think about that?” Even if a hat is never your style. Go overboard! You may need one now! Make a stylish selection, try Dingolay in Sheraton Center, to protect you from the sun and add a classy look to your face! Broad rimmed hats are practically expected on the beach anyway!
BEACH BAGS Last…and also first, source a large, sturdy, beach bag and two plastic bags; one to hold wet clothing, the other for garbage, Enjoy your time at the beach but only leave foot prints behind!

baTHSHEBA This stunning beach certainly is one of the prized gems of the East Coast. Here one can see the Atlantic Ocean in her uninterrupted splendour, amidst breathtaking backdrops of remarkable stone formations, beautiful lush landscape, and pristine waters. Here, the currents are very strong, making this beach a favourite for surfers in Barbados. Here the sand is wonderfully golden, and a careful search could unearth beautiful sea shells. It is certainly one of the most ruggedly beautiful beaches Barbados has to offer, and
St. Joseph is one of the most popular. Surfers are known to frequent what is known as ‘Soup Bowl’ in Bathsheba, and host year round activities there. It’s a very good beach for picnics and photos so be sure to walk with your camera! While not suitable for swimmers, the formation of quite a few natural pools make it possible for sea lovers to still get wet. Bathsheba is also of historical value to Barbados as it is the site of the old train line, which was operational in the 1800s. Bathsheba certainly has no lack of activity and beauty.
WAVES Large to very large waves. An ideal place for experienced surfers. Natural protected pools are also formed here, suitable for a shallow soak.
