THE HURRICANE SEASON! GET READY FOR
An active hurricane season has been forcasted. The National Hurricane Center released a list of 21 names for this year’s storms, as well as other names in case they are necessary. That gives us an idea of how many atmospheric systems we can expect.
On its Internet pages and social networks, NOAA offers us advice and detailed information that can help us in the preparation process. At https://www.noaa.gov/hurricane-prep-social-media-english, you can find official advice before, during and after a hurricane. Visit this page and start preparing soon!
ADVICE FOR THE HURRICANE SEASON FOR THE HURRICANE SEASON
A few years ago, Andrés “Andy” Maldonado, a commercial fisher from El Combate, Cabo Rojo, P.R. and member of the CFMC Outreach and Education Advisory Panel, gave us a list of tips to be ready for hurricane season. We would like to review it and share it with you:
Secure your fishing equipment and don't leave any potential projectiles loose on your dock, marina, fishing village or community.
Choose and install an alternate power source. - After the hurricane, there will be no electricity, and you will have to find ways to protect your catch, either using a generator to keep the freezers running or selling the catch immediately when it arrives from fishing.
Take your vessel out of the water and secure it in a location away from big trees and objects that could fall inside it. - Store the equipment, especially electronic devices, and cover any that you cannot take out of the boat.
Store your important documents, like fishing license, permits, tax forms, ans statistics reports, among others, and if possible, scan them (you can do it with your cell phone)
This is Andy!
Many people know Andy as a fisherman and for his contributions to marine education and research. He is a member of our CFMC Outreach and Education Advisory Panel (OEAP) and in 2009, he received the Gladding Memorial Award during the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) meeting. In the following links, he shares his experiences and advice.
