The 2014 GREAT BIG Christmas Greetings section, Christmas entertainment for the masses Leslie Cholowsky Editor
This year, we asked all of our correspondents to tell us what their favourite Christmas movie, television show, or theatrical production was. Christmastime brings many iconic and traditional stories to life. Some have a message, and some embody the spirit of Christmas, while others just take a fun poke at the chaos that is families and Christmas-time. From the time of the variety shows of the 1950s, nearly every one held some kind of Christmas episode, but it wasn’t until the release
of 1962’s Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol that an original story was created about Christmas just for TV, although there were Christmas specials that were adaptations of popular works, like Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, or Disney’s Babes in Toyland before then. Then, in the late 60s and 70s, a number of new and original specials appeared, some of which are still faithfully aired every year, like The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (1962), Frosty’s Winter Wonderland (1976), Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), and A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965).
Decades earlier, Hollywood produced classic Christmas stories in the movies, with some that remain very popular today, like Holiday Inn, (1942), It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), Miracle on 34th Street (1947). With a few exceptions, production of Christmas themed movies slowed down until the mid 80s, when every year brought something new and different.
Ernest Saves Christmas (1988), National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989), Home Alone 1 (1990) and 2(1992), and The Santa Clause (1994) seemed to become almost instant classics. These days, the market is flooded with madefor-TV Christmas movies and Christmas Specials, but the old classics are still shown, and whole generations are appreciating them.
One needs only to look as far as the popularity of school Christmas concerts in Flagstaff to know that we enjoy being entertained. For those lucky enough to enjoy live presentations of Christmas classic stage performances like ‘The Nutcracker,’ or theatrical presentations of other Christmas classics, being a member of the audience is a very special feeling.
For yet others, it’s the casual get-togethers, and family traditions that truly make Christmas something to look forward to, whether that’s one of Flagstaff’s many Christmas celebrations, or a private get together. As we tasked ourselves to share our favourite Christmas entertainment with you, we hope that you love these classic (and crazy) pieces as much as we do. Merry Christmas!

My favourite holiday entertainment: Mean The Christmas Song old Mr. Grinch brings back happy memories
When I was growing up, there were about four classic Christmas standards that appeared on the television; Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Charlie Brown and his adorable Christmas Tree, and my all time favourite, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. My dad pretty much controlled the TV every night, but I think he liked cartoons as much as we kids did, because we always got to watch those. I think one of the reasons I did like it so
much is because both my parents actually laughed out loud while watching it. I continue to watch Mr. Grinch every year. To me, it is the total package of story and song that manages to keep its appeal year after year. It was great when we went from a black and white to a colour television, I always knew he would be a bilous green colour! At this point, after my [mumble-mumble] number of years watching it, I practically know it by heart. Someday I’ll even figure out what the Whos down in Who-ville are actually singing around that giant Christmas tree... I just can’t quite catch the first few words. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to watch it next year.... Wishing you a feast of

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping on your nose, Yuletide carols being sung by a choir, And folks dressed up like Eskimos.
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe, Help to make the season bright. Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow, Will find it hard to sleep tonight. They know that Santa's on his way; He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh. And every mother's child is going to spy, To see if reindeer really know how to fly. And so I'm offering this simple phrase, To kids from one to ninety-two, Although its been said many times, many ways, A very Merry Christmas to you!

Christmas Vacation an all-time comedy classic, but nothing says Christmas like Home Alone
Eric Anderson Publisher
My favourite holiday
movie is a tough one to pick. It would be easy for me to tell you all it’s Christmas Vacation. I’ve probably watched it every year since I was five years old. Frankly, it’s something of a family tradition, and I’d be remiss not to at least mention it. I’ll go so far as to say that bred within me is an instinctual objective to spread the holiday hijinks of the Griswold
family to as many future generations as possible. The world shall always know that the sh****r was full. That said, it’s not my favourite “holiday” film. I’ve discovered in recent years that the Home Alone movies (1 and 2, not the atrocious flops that came later) still mean just as much to me today as they did when I
was a kid. They both tell a story of adventure, mischief, and unrealistic scenarios that nevertheless suspend my disbelief long enough to bring me back to childhood. The movies are synonymous with being a kid at Christmas, and that fantastic cast doesn’t hurt either (even John Candy is in the first one).
For that reason, if you need me, I’ll be hanging with the Wet Bandits
again this holiday season. Merry Christmas, everyone!
Happy Christmas! May the true meaning of Christmas reside in your hearts this holiday season and beyond.

Story of Scrooge never grows old Mary Jane Hedeman Sedgewick P. 780-384-3615 E. mjhedeman@gmail.com
One Christmas, shrouded in the mists of long long ago, (it had to have been the 60s, which you might think was before I was born, bless your hearts), our family received a “group” gift from Santa. It was a fat book, full of rich and beautiful illustrations. I remember sitting, pouring over the detailed paintings, enchanted. And then I read the story... “Marley was dead to begin with.” Great start. Then came the bit about the term “dead as a doornail,” and how a coffin nail was probably a better simile. I guess I was a grammar nerd even then. It caught my imagination, and a lifelong love affair with words (and this story in particular) was born. Each Christmas season I indulge in my favourite renditions of this story. I have a collection of the written versions, of course, including the script from the play we produced here in Sedgewick a few years ago. But there are other formats! Charles Dickens’ story of Ebenezer has been retold and remolded countless times, made into stage plays, movies and television specials. The worst, in my book, is the vintage Mr. Magoo, an all-time low. The best? Some prefer the Alistair Simm version, made in 1951, and some the George C. Scott. My favourites, however, are two very different versions. First is a musical version titled “Scrooge” with Albert Finney as Scrooge. The story isn’t completely true to the original, but it’s forgivable and delightful. The second is “A Muppet Christmas Carol.” I know, sounds terribly cheesy. And as my friend Michelle says, “There’s nothing that says Christmas quite like singing cabbages and skating penguins.” Seriously, the Cratchit
family (Kermit and Miss Piggy – their boys look like dad, the girls like mom) warms my heart, and is the one Christmas movie I absolutely always watch. What makes this story, first published more than 150 years ago, continue to be a classic? I think it’s because we all experience the dark sadness and despair that intensifies this time of year. Each of us has known greed, bitter selfishness, and self-absorption. “Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint... secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster.” Scrooge is real – believable. Through an evaluation of his past, the world around him, and a glimpse of the future, this awful and unhappy man finds the will to change. He is given the opportunity to change himself and the lives of those whose lives intersect with his. It is as though a light comes into his life and rescues him from the cold darkness that had enveloped his character. In my mind, this is the essence of what Christmas truly is. I celebrate the birth of a Saviour. A child who shall grow up and change the world. A light that guides us to be better versions of ourselves. If there is hope for Scrooge, there can be hope for us. And so, my Christmas wish for each of you is that you may find God’s blessings in the darkness
of December. You know what Tiny Tim said? Yes. That. And like Ebenezer, may you, “...Revel in the joy of Christmas and the companionship of family.”

My very favourite entertainment of the Christmas season is the Christmas parties. Friends, family, and co-workers gathering to share the fun, food, and festivities really brings on the feelings of warmth and love that I feel should be displayed. There are many great movies that we like to watch, but watching has no comparison to participating in events. Hugs are important, everyone needs to love and be loved. It is the small things in life that creates differences, in the big things of life we are one. Greeting one another as we meet, on the street or while shopping, is also a warm and pleasant experience that I love. Merry Christmas to all. And make a New Year’s resolution to phone me with your news!

Lougheed correspondent fondly remembers a family Christmas tradition Silke Hentschel Lougheed P. 780-386-3735 E. silke@hentschel.info
Back in the day, when I was young, we had only three TV stations in Germany. Two were for the whole country and then one for each province with local stuff. It was common for sev-
eral years that there was a German production of a mini-series for all four advent sundays. We were looking forward to this every time. These series were made for the whole family, a bit funny with a sad touch, and, of course, always a happy ending. One was about a young ballet dancing girl and another described the trouble of a single father of a teenage girl together on holiday through the USA. The best thing was always the movie on Christmas Eve. German families get together on the evening of the 24th of December and the presents are opened that night. To keep the kids occup i e d through the waiting time, there
was always a special movie on TV. My favourite was “Little Lord Fauntleroy” in the 1980 version with Ricky Schroder and Sir Alec Guinness. The movie, based on the children’s novel of the same name, told the story of little Cedric, who lives with his mother in Brooklyn, and learns that he is the heir of an earldom in England. His grumpy grandfather is a harsh and unhappy man, but that gets changed by the little boy. Cedric turns the old guy around and changes lots of lives with his natural, and a bit naive, happiness. It ends with a big Christmas dinner and they lived happily ever after.... I am impressed by the acting skills of the little boy and of course no one is like Sir Alec Guinness. I don't think there is a bad movie with him out
there. After the movie, we had our family dinner

and then ‘Bescherung,’ the presents were opened. It gets less excit-
ing, the older you get, but it was still a very special time for me.

Fond memories of black and white TV Merry Christmas! and family at Christmastime Charlotte Stenson Former Forestburg Correspondent
My favourite Christmas movie has always been ‘The Grinch who Stole Christmas.’ As a child, my cousins and I would be huddled around a black and white television to watch it, and now in later years, the movie with Jim Carey is the best. I love “Where are you, Christmas?” sung
... And a round of thanks to you, our kind and loyal customers. We are very grateful for your business this past year and wish you all best this holiday season.
by Faith Hill, from the soundtrack of ‘The Grinch.’ As an adult, I accompanied a group of ladies to watch to a performance of the Nutcracker Ballet, which was truly magicial. I don't think I took a breath until the first act ended. I highly recommend the performance to everyone. On behalf of our family, I would like to wish Merry Christmas to the devoted readers of the Community Press and to the amazing people who continue to provide it to us weekly.

The promise of Christmas. There was a time when Christmas meant that something very good was about to happen. But as we get older, life gets complicated, and we lose our child-like appreciation of it. If you had misfortune recently, we’d like you to know that Christmas will come, good things will happen, and the new year is waiting for us to greet it. And we think that’s something worth looking forward to.

D Thankfully, there are Christmas movies for all ranges of people who love the Christmas season. For those who love Christmas to the extreme, there are movies like ‘Elf’ or ‘Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer’ to keep you in the spirit. For those like me, who aren't into the over-the-top, ‘Christmas threw up all over every scene’ kind of
movies, the very first ‘Die Hard’ film exists, to keep you on the edge of your seat while also in the Christmas spirit. ‘Die Hard’ has just enough of the Christmas cheer in it to keep me jolly and festive, but it also has enough action packed into 132 minutes that I don’t start looking at my phone instead of
paying attention to the film. ‘Die Hard’ is the perfect holiday blend for me. There are plenty of scenes full of Christmas trees and decorations, but they don’t distract you from the spray of bullets, angry bad guys,
and sassy, classic oneliners. Nothing says Merry Christmas better than “I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho.” Have a safe and merry Christmas, full of action, joy, and a wonderful time with family and friends. Yippee-Ki-Yay!

When Leslie told me I had to write about my favourite Christmas movie, plays, or theatrical productions and tell why it’s my favourite, I was stumped. When I was young, the Christmas specials only came on once during the season. It was part of the reward of only having three TV stations! After giving it some thought, I have to say it was good old ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas.’ Every time I see it I am sent back to elementary school and my living room as a child. Everyone would fight for the good seats and I always seemed to end up on the floor being a step stool for my brother and his stinky feet! I am pretty sure I have seen it a hundred times, but it takes me back to being a kid and getting to eat snacks in the living
room and hanging out with my parents and siblings. A Charlie Brown Christmas is turning 50 years old in January, wow and Charlie and the gang haven’t aged a bit. That poor tree is still my favourite of all time and I still love it when Linus gives up his blanket to add support for the tree. When I think of my best Christmas moments my family is first and foremost in my favourite ones. When my daughter was little, she wasn’t as impressed with the early cartoon Christmas specials.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
She loved Home Alone, and with TV nowadays, we were so lucky to get to see it hundred times in a season. She would laugh
every single time we watched it. The humour was all but gone for me about the third time but it made her happy so it made me happy too!

‘Yes, Virginia’ the most famous Christmas letter Leslie Cholowsky Editor
You may have heard the phrase, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus,” but are you aware of what that is from? In the year 1897 an eight-year-old girl by the name of Virgina O’Hanlon, asked her father if Santa Claus was real, because some of her friends tried to tell her he was not. He suggested that if she wanted the truth, she should write a letter to the editor of The [New York] Sun, telling Virginia, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Following his advice, she did write this letter: “Dear Editor: I am eight years old. “Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. “Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” “Please tell me the
truth; is there a Santa Claus? “Virginia O’Hanlon.” One of the paper’s editors at the time was Francis Church. Church was a war correspondent during America’s Civil War, and had seen much suffering, both on and off the battlefield. Considering that, you might think he would slough the letter off as childish and unworthy of a reply, but he took it very seriously, and his reply has become one of the most beloved editorials of all time, perhaps the most. His response answered the question from a very philosophical point of view, and answered the question, unequivocably, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.” That letter and editorial may have been lost to time had not a group of people, at the time of Virginia’s death in 1971, decided to create a picture
book for children that illustrated the editorial and its main characters. That book was eventually translated to a television show based on the editorial. Virginia kept her letter, which was given back by the paper, and gave it to one of her granddaughters. The letter actually appeared on the popular show ‘Antiques Roadshow,’ in 1998, where it was authenticated, then appraised at a value between $20,000 and $30,000. O’Hanlon apparently received letters from others about her letter for her entire life, and she always included a copy of the editorial reply when she responded. When interviewed later in life, she said she felt the writing of the letter and its response had a very positive impact on her life.
“Dear Editor: I am eight years old. “Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. “Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” “Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? “Virginia O’Hanlon.” VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Clause, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives, and lives forever. A thousand years from now, VIRGINIA, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Homemade gluten-free dinner rolls Holiday dinners vary depending on the household, but certain staples seem to pop up no matter where you sit down to enjoy your holiday meal. Dinner rolls are one such staple, as few things supplement a hearty holiday meal better than freshly baked homemade dinner rolls. Men and women with gluten allergies may want to avoid traditional dinner rolls, but holiday hosts can take steps to ensure everyone gets to enjoy dinner rolls regardless of their dietary restrictions. The following recipe for "Dinner Rolls" from Jeanne Sauvage's "Gluten-Free Baking" (Chronicle Books) is a gluten-free version of a beloved holiday staple. Dinner Rolls Makes 18 rolls 4 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 cups warm milk (about 110 F) 2 tablespoons active dry yeast 3 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons xanthan gum 4 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 extra-large eggs 1/4 cup neutral-flavored oil such as rice bran or canola 2 teaspoons vinegar, preferably apple cider Melted unsalted butter for brushing Tapioca flour for dusting

Brush 18 standard muffin cups (one 12-cup pan and one 6-cup pan) with melted butter and dust with tapioca flour. In a small bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon of the sugar into the warm milk. Whisk in the yeast to dissolve. Set aside to proof. The mixture will get foamy. If your kitchen is warm, the mixture will foam quickly, so watch it to make sure it does not overflow the bowl. In a medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, xanthan gum, baking powder, salt, and remaining 3 tablespoons sugar. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the eggs on medium speed until foamy, about 3 minutes. Add the oil and beat for 2 more minutes. Reduce the speed to low, add the vinegar and beat to combine. Add the yeast mixture and beat to mix. Add the flour mixture and beat to combine, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat for 3 minutes longer. Distribute the dough equally among the prepared muffin cups and fill them about three-quarters full.
With a sharp knife that has been dipped in tapioca flour, cut a deep slash in the top of each roll. Dip the knife in flour before each cut, and don't worry if a little extra tapioca flour is left on top of the rolls. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Let the dough stand in a warm, draft-free place to rise until doubled in bulk, about 40 minutes. Brush the top of each roll with melted butter. Bake until the tops are a nice golden brown, about 20 minutes. If they start to brown too quickly, loosely tent the rolls with aluminum foil. Remove the rolls to wire racks to cool. If you are serving them immediately, it's nice to put them in a tea towel-lined blanket to keep warm. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Christmas is about so much more than Santa and gifts. It’s an opportunity to renew our faith and to tell all the special people we know just how very much we value their friendship and support.

Dear Santa,
Santa I have a problem I don’t even know what I want yet. I have so so many toys I even had to take some down stairs just to make room for my sister to be able to sleep in my room. I’m not really sure how good I’ve been this year. I have tried to be good,
I can’t remember getting into trouble so I guess I’ve been ok good. Well Santa my mitts do have a hole in them so I guess I need new mitts. I’ll have to think harder and maybe send a second Santa letter with some ideas. Is that allowed? Santa last year you gave my sister slippers
but they were too big so maybe try again and maybe they will fit this time. Santa my mom thinks she wants to go on a holiday instead of a present. Is that allowed?
I’m going to be giving her a hug and kiss. Dads are hard to think of something maybe a
new ski-doo. Santa I live in a black house close to Rylie. If we get time I might leave you cookies. Did you like the banana milkshake I left you last year? I’m not really sure but I’ll leave you something. I love you Santa.

Dear Santa, Santa I’m wondering what kind of toys you are making this year and giving to kids? Wondering if you make ninja turtle stuff? I have been a good boy all year long. I always do what mom says, I pile up leaves, go outside when she says I should, eat healthy food, and don’t fight. Santa I would really like a ninja turtle for Christmas that’s all I really really want. I
would take good care of it. Bring my sister anything princess. Santa bring my mom food and maybe a flash light. Dad could use a book to draw stuff so he remembers what it looks like. Santa please bring my jerry pa some pretty glass dishes she likes to cook us food. Pa John could always use work clothes. Thank you for the ninja turtle and other gifts you are bringing. We will have lots of cookies for you cause mom and jerry pa are going to be busy baking
at both houses. My favourite that they make is chocolate chip. I’ll try and save you some. Santa I live outside of Lougheed our number is 444 you are welcome to use my chimney. We have two dogs and a big cat and three kittens but they won’t bother you. We’ll lock the dogs in their kennel. Merry Christmas. Looking forward to Christmas. I’ll have our house all decorated for you. Love, Beau

Dear Santa,
Dear Santa, Santa I have been a lot good this year. I pack my own lunch, feed my fish and give my cat milk. Remember my sister and brother fight but I don’t. I don’t do it cause I don’t like getting into trouble, I know that Santa is watching. Santa I would like a fake unicorn and a robot dog and a robot dinosaur. Bring my brother a fake gun. My sister would like another singing thing. My mom would love a hot tub and bubble bath. My dad would like a fake deer head to hang on the wall. A big one. Santa please send something to help grandma and grandpa so their horses don’t run out of their pen again. I live in Lougheed. My house is a yellowish skin colour and I have a black dog outside. My dog doesn’t bite but he does jump if it’s a new person. But I’m pretty sure Santa that you aren’t a new person coming to my house so Buddy shouldn’t bother you. Merry Christmas.
I am excited for Christmas. I love Christmas timemaking snowmen and getting lots of presents is great. I have been trying to be good. I eat supper at the table nicely, I put my garbage in the garbage can, and I always clean up my toys. I haven’t had enough time to think of a shopping list for Christmas yet. I already have a lot of toys but don’t worry I’m going to have a garage sale in the spring. Santa just surprise me with some gifts - you always bring good toys - so it’s your decision what you want to bring
but my favourite colour is orange and pink just to help you out. My sister wants a robot toy. Mom does like scarves and a coffee cup, and Dad likes sports so maybe bring him a basketball. Santa my house number is a two and a three. It’s grey and kinda white and black. Santa I don’t have a chimney but I have a magic key that I made in playschool hopefully that will work. If I’m not home I’m on holidays in Phoenix getting my ears pierced and I’ve been told if we are really good maybe we can even go to Disneyland - I’m hoping that’s true. Santa I hope you find me at Christmas time.

Dear Santa, I do love you Santa. Thank you for the toys last year I can’t remember what they were but I did like them. I was a good girl this year. I was four times a good girl, just a little fighting with my sister just cause she is cranky in the morning. That girl just does not like to be woke up in the morning. Santa I would love a little doll house for Christmas not too big of one because I only have two dolls. I would also like a little notebook cause I can write the word “the” now. Bring Mersaideze a monster high blanket and maybe a pillow too. My little brother is just a baby what could a baby need? How about a car blanket. Just bring Mom a candles and Dad would love four toy cars and a big toy combine - I can’t believe he’s a dad and he still loves toy cars they’re everywhere in the office. For Grandma and Grandpa I’ll just give them pictures of us. They really like us kids so that will work. Santa I live on a farm now. My house has a white roof red-actually I kinda forgot-so maybe call my mom’s cell she will give you directions. I’ll try to make time to make you some cookies. I’m kinda busy playing, taking skating lessons, and doing lots of homework, but I’ll try to get on it. Love hugs and kisses, Maddison and thank-you again for those last year presents and I like anything from Frozen
the Camrose store called Walmart but Mom doesn’t buy them all so there is still some there I want. The toys that I wished I could have maybe they are purple or blue and have sparkles on them. Bring the toys I wish I could have to my house in Sedgewick but my house is a little bit far from Sedgewick. Santa I might change my mind so check my list at home. My little sister can just have one of my old toys and maybe a brand new toothpaste. Mom would like some make-up-check Walmart. My dad would like some work stuff like tools
because he can fix stuff now. Good bye. Wish I could give you a hug and a kiss. Drive safe with the reindeer. Don’t forget a flashlight in case it’s a foggy night. Love, Harley-Ray.
Dear Santa, Santa when are you coming? It’s hard to wait this long for presents I have been a lot good this year. I used to fight with my sister but I’ve stopped that now. I couldn’t fight with her when my arm was
hurt. That’s all I do to be good. For Christmas I am wishing for a new castle with rainbow slide I saw it on TV. So have your elves check the TV so you get it right. Santa please bring my sister a new curler. My parents don’t want anything they already have everything they just want their kids. But if you like, Santa, bring them some candy canes, they like candy. Santa I kind of live a little bit far from town but you’ve got there before so just check your notes. I don’t care whatever presents he brings even if
he brings me the wrong one I just like presents so it won’t matter. We will be setting out milk and cookies for you just in case you need a little snack. Remember, I’m not fussy even if you bring the wrong present I might get a little mad but I’ll still eat supper, won’t pout too bad and I’ll still keep the present. Don’t worry, Love, Jesse.
Dear Santa, I have been a good girl I help wash the floor, clean my room, and fold towels. I would really like girl toys like lots of dolls. Mommy would like a new dress. Daddy would like a new shirt. My sisters like girl things too. I live in Lougheed in a white house. Love, Agatha

Dear Santa, I drew you a picture of you and your reindeer. Hope you liked it. Did you put it on your fridge? I have been really good. Me and my sister never fight. I always listen to my mom, so I am really really double good. Santa I really want a robo puppy and a robo dinosaur. That’s it – so my list is easy for you to fill. My sister wants a toy pig. Mom wants some new purple pants. Dad wants a new game. Grandma wants a new watering can and Grandpa needs some oil. Miss O (or also Auntie) needs a double bed because I push her off and she’s cranky when that happens, she likes her sleep. So please please send a double bed with frog sheets – that should make her happy. Just want to let you know that I will be leaving carrots for the reindeer and there will be homemade cookies and milk for you. Santa just have the reindeer smell the air for
the carrots and they will find their way to my house. My house has a brown roof, in my back yard is a blue slide or you could just watch the school bus get there. Love you Santa. Excited for Christmas.

of directions. Check your ‘Santa knows Everything’ map or ask the elves. I will be leaving you some sugar cookies and milk. Check in the kitchen. Good Bye.
Love, Mason
Love, Naomi.
Love, Willow. Dear Santa, Sure wish I knew how your elves made all those toys. Who makes all the toys for Wal-Mart? I have been a good boy. Really good. I listen to my mom and my teachers. I always do my homework lots and lots of times and I sit at the table and clean my bathroom. Santa this year I would like Lego. I like Lego, it’s awesome and maybe a new hockey stick. I really like hockey. I’m good at it. I got four goals in the one game in Daysland and three against Forestburg. Santa, my mom likes flowers – she loves daisies. And Dad would like a football. Grandma needs a new baseball glove. Papa needs a new golf club – he will use it a lot. Please check my cousin’s lists so they get something good. I’ve already made your
Dear Santa, I have been so good this year. None, none, none fighting not even one little bit. Good hey!? I have kept my room clean all year long, that’s it that all I have done. Santa I would like a doll for Christmas. I don’t know what kind I just know that I want a doll. I don’t know what my sisters like, ask the elves. Mommy would love some paper butterflies to put on a wedding tree. Daddy really wants a camo shirt. I live at a farm, my house is the colour of my skin. That’s it that’s all I know. I just moved here so I don’t have too good
Dear Santa, I like you because you always give me lots of presents. I like presents. I like the presents that have farm stuff in them. I have been a good boy all year long. I played, shared toys, did my school homework, mowed the lawn, and did all the garden work. All I want for Christmas is farm stuff. I need the practise because when I grow up I’m going to be a farmer that combines all the time. My brother and sister think they need a vacation for Christmas. Please please send them somewhere where there is a swimming pool. Mom wants a vacation
I was a little sad, but he was kind of mean so don’t worry now. Grandma and Grandpa need a new basketball. Me and my Grandma will be making you some super good chocolate chip cookies. Grandma puts lots of chocolate chips in them. Merry Christmas.
too. Dad would like a glass car that is so special you can never touch it only look at it on the shelf. Make sure the car is blue. Santa I live in a brown house with lots of trees around. You can use the door because it’s not locked and we don’t have a dog to scare you – he got dead.
Lots of Love, Ryder

Dear Santa, I love you Santa. You brought me a good toy last year! I was happy with it. I have been a good girl this year. I don’t fight with my brothers – well maybe just a little. I help my mom feed the dogs and the fish – that’s about all I do cause mostly I am busy playing. That’s what kids do - play and moms clean, but at my house Dad cleans too. Santa this year I want a little toy snake that’s purple and pink. The purple and pink part is important – they are my favorite colours. I would also like a toy Sparky dog that talks and says “Always run out your door when there is a fire.” Bring Hudson a toy red car – that will make him happy. My big brother needs a black and white hockey stick – and he wants a glass mini stick – he says it’s at Wal-Mart but Mom wouldn’t buy it. If your elves can’t make it check Wal-Mart. Santa bring my mom a Christmas plant and Dad would like a big guy
hockey stick cause he plays real hockey. Santa please don’t forget Porter – he would like a ball chew toy, that’s really chewy and tastes good for dogs, and smells like meat. Grandma really really wants a tomato peeler. Grandpa would like a hammer. I’m leaving a treat for you as a thank you for the toys, cookies and milk. The cookies will be homemade. Oh yeah, don’t forget my babysitter Debbie she would like a kids toy for Christmas. I really don’t know why she would want a kids toy but we could always play with it. Love love love you lots and also love your elves! XOXOXOXO, Emersyn
Dear Santa, How’s the weather up there? Is it snowing lots? Hope you don’t have trouble getting all the toys out. I have been pretty good all year. I’ve been trying to be good, I even do laundry. Santa I really really want a robot that is like a dinosaur. It’s been on a TV show that Jeremy has, it’s a grown up
show. If you bring it to me I’ll promise to take care of it. Santa bring my sister some girl stuff – I don’t know anything about that kind of stuff. And my little brother, well I don’t think he is going to get anything cause he’s just a baby and what would a baby need? Santa just bring Mom some girl stuff too. Dad needs a new truck – a white one with shiny wheels. Hope you have a safe flight, and don’t forget my robot is a transformer that way it’s two toys in one. Love, Brett.
Dear Santa, Hello! How are you doing? I have been good. I clean up my toys. That’s it, but I have lots of toys to put away. Santa I would like an iPad for Christmas. I would like to play games on it. I like Corny’s iPad so I know I would like one. My big brother needs a new phone. Lena is just a baby she doesn’t need anything. Santa my mom would like a new phone too and Dad would like a new iPad too. I live in a blue house and I ride the school bus home. Merry Christmas, David.

Dear Santa, I was wondering what you feed your reindeer cause maybe I could leave them a treat. I have been good all year. I have been 5 good. No fighting – not one little bit. I eat healthy food, I play nice, and no pouting. For Christmas I would like a truck and a trailer so maybe send cars too. Preston wants a new costume and Ethan wants what I want, but I want my own. Santa, Mom maybe needs a new pirate costume – not sure why she needs one cause she never wears her old one or maybe send her a new purse. Oh no, she already has one. Don’t know, she’s hard to think of something for. Dad would like new shoes, fancy cowboy boots – green ones. That would make him happy. Santa I live in this town – Sedgewick and it’s close to my school – just check your map from last year. I’ll leave you chocolate chip cookies to give you energy for bringing all the presents. Santa we have a problem: I don’t have a fireplace so you might have to use the door. Come before dark cause Mom might lock it. Good-bye. Merry Christmas. Can’t wait to get my truck and trailer! Love you, Bradley. Dear Santa, I love you Santa because you always
remember me and you bring me good presents. I have been 100% good. I always be nice to my sister. This year I would love a fairy that goes where ever you go and its skirt lights up, and a big stuffy that you can put all of your toys into, and an Elsa doll that skates, and I will be making a bigger list at home. Please bring my sister a stuffy and a butterfly toy. Bring my Mom some flower seeds and some new gloves and don’t forget she wants an Elsa shirt. Dad would like a new pair of blue shoes. I live in the country. My house is blue and made out of wood and we have a black lap dog. She is a nice girl, just tell her to stay down – it works most of the time. I will be leaving you two chocolate cookies and three muffins. If you can’t eat them just share with the reindeer. Bye Santa. Looking forward to your visit. Could you tell Mom how many more sleeps it is?? Love, Emily. Dear Dear Santa, Santa, I would love to see where the elves work – too bad my kindergarten couldn’t come for a field trips. I love field trips. The combine field trip was good, but visiting the elves workshop would be the best ever. It’s been a pretty good year. I’ve been good but sometimes my sister does hurt me. I usually just take it and say it’s ok. I really want a toy Rudolph. I’m going to
play Santa and I would really take care of it. If that’s not available bring me Chapster with a fake drink and a fake phone. Bring my sister something Elsa and my brother would like some new video games. My mom would love a new computer so she can print off colouring pages. Dad needs and would love a new movie of Criminal Minds. Santa, I live in Lougheed. You know where to go cause you made it there last year and if you need help Auntie has a Santa Tracker.
I have never left Santa any treats before – I don’t know why, I just forgot. I will try harder this year. I am planning to leave carrots for Rudolph and also a fresh bowl of water. There will be milk and cookies and a few pieces of pears. The pears are just in case you need something a little bit healthy. I’ll help mom get the cookies done. I love you. Good bye – have a nice evening. Love, Sawyer... and a little bit Miss Vicki

2014 Great Big Christmas Greetings, Tuesday, December 16, 2014 - Page 27 do remember to send extra bullets. My brother needs a new phone – my sister kind of broke it, and my sister needs a new doll house. Mom needs a new car please bring a black one, and Dad likes coffee and anything hockey. I haven’t made you any cookies yet, because Mom said it’s too early and they will get yucky or else we will eat them all before Santa comes. If I have time between hockey games I will make some cookies for you or I’ll probably tell Mom to do it. Santa drop my Nerf gun off at my house in Sedgewick. It’s up the big hill and it’s white, you can’t miss it. Use the chimney cause Mom
Dear Santa, I like Christmas, I actually really like it a lot. The best part is getting toys and going sledding. How are you feeling? Are you in good shape for the big day? Santa, Miss Vicki says I can only ask for one thing so my one thing is lots of toys. And especially don’t forget I want a Nerf Gun and don’t forget extra bullets – you can shoot birds with a Nerf Gun and sometimes your brother or the walls. It’s a cool, safe gun but I lost all the bullets – so
locks the doors at dark. Santa have a Merry Christmas and I forgot to tell you I have been 100 good. That means I have only been maybe bad that one time when Keithen bit me. We were playing Super Hero. We were laughing, but Mom didn’t think it was funny, but other than that I have been 100 good. Love, Linden. Dear Santa, Thank you Santa. Santa I have been a good boy this year. I help clean the mess up in our house, I put toys away. I listen to my
mom. Santa I want a toy tractor it doesn’t matter what colour. Philip wants a truck. Nela likes barbies. Adam wants a little tractor. Santa, Mom would like a picture to hang on the wall. Santa, Dad wants to build a farm, so he needs a real tractor and combine. Santa, I live in Sedgewick, my house is white. There is lots of trees by the house and a big road. Merry Christmas, Bennie. Santa, I hope this storm isn’t at the North Pole. Would
you get snowed in? Dad’s getting a new snowblower if you need help. I’ve been a good boy this year. I put spoons away, I help set the table, I always have to put toys away, and I always practice my homework at the table and the couch. Santa, I would like a red thing with a back and front on it. I saw it in a Christmas book but I don’t know what it does. It was big and looked like it was fun. Kayden would like a remote control ski-doo. My twin brothers maybe need a new toque and mitts. You have to buy the same things because they are twins they might get
mad if one got something different. Santa bring my mommy a new girl book they are thick with lots of words. Daddy would like a ski-doo because he has always wanted one. Santa I live in Lougheed. My house is silver and it is close beside my yard. Santa I’m not sure if we have reindeer food mom hasn’t told me. I’ll help mom make chocolate chip cookies for you. I’ll leave them on the table or maybe outside. Good-bye. Hope it doesn’t snow too much. Love, Ty

Dear Santa, Guess what I made – a paper chain to decorate my tree. I hope you think it looks great. I was really really super good girl this year. There was no fighting, I helped and helped with the dishwasher that’s it, cause I was busy playing hide and seek with my sister. Santa I would love a baby, soft, fluffy, toy Dalmatian puppy. I already have a real dog so this can be a fake dog. But most of all I want a beautiful Barbie dollhouse that has jewels on it. My little sister needs a baby scarf to match her kitten mittens. Mom would love a new coffee cup with Santa on it, and all the reindeers. Daddy would like a
hat with Santa on it. Grandma needs a Christmas hat with a Santa on it too. Santa, I live in the country on a farm down a long road. Santa I have no chimney, just a fake one so I’ll tell Mom not to lock the door any more. I have another great idea. I would love a pet bird and some Rainbow Loom kits. I will be decorating and setting the table up with cookies on it for you – so be excited it’s going to be good. Love, Anna. I want a glow bug too please.
Dear Santa, Merry Christmas. Our tree isn’t even up yet, but the elf came today. His name is Max he hasn’t done anything bad yet. I have been good good
good this year. No fighting with my sister. Sometimes she fights with me, but I don’t fight with her. I don’t know what Santa is going to think about her – once she was even going to run away and live at Grandma’s house. She won’t do that anymore cause now we have kittens and Grandma doesn’t, so she won’t want to go to Grandma’s any more. Santa all I want for Christmas is face paint. Kelsey and Taylor have some so I want some too. Thank you. My little sister doesn’t even know what she wants so I don’t know
what you are going to do about that. Santa, my mom would love jewelry. Please bring bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings. She likes black, grey, silvery, and sparkles. Dad just needs new shirts. Grandma Nikki wants lip gloss. Grandpa David needs new summer shoes so he doesn’t have to borrow any just in case he goes on a holiday. He likes Palms Springs. It has a pool and a zoo. Santa I sort of like live close to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s. You have to turn, don’t
go straight or you will end up at Kelsey and Taylor’s house. My house is kind of greyish. I don’t know where my magic key from playschool is, I think my mom hid it and lost it. She couldn’t find my ski pants this morning either – we are having trouble finding stuff. Don’t worry we finally found my ski pants they were in the car – so don’t send new ones. Tell the reindeer I’m leaving carrots for them.

Dear Santa, I love you cause you bring such good presents. Last year you brought me a toy you can put balls in. I liked it – it’s still under my bed. I have been really good at my house. I even clean my room, find toys that are under my bed, and I pet my dog.
Santa I want a Nerf Gun. I’m going to shoot targets. My sisters want a new dress for Christmas. My mom would love a princess dress and a ring – a diamond ring for Christmas. Dad would like a new gun too, but not a Nerf Gun. Santa, I live in Sedgewick. It’s just down the street where there are both lines – follow the straight line then turn when you see a red and white sign turn. Keep on driving then turn – then stop. My
house is grey. Mom will be leaving you some kind of cookies, maybe chocolate, and also leaving carrot cookies for the reindeer. Merry Christmas. I love you. Please send a blue Nerf Gun. Love, Jaxen.
Dear Santa, Santa I have been good
but my sister isn’t. Sometimes she fights with me but remember she started it. I just can’t do anything about it. Santa this year I really want a make-over kit. Make sure it has lots of makeup with real lipstick – pink lipstick. I’m going to make myself gorgeous and anyone else that comes to my house. If you think my sister is going to get something bring her something from the rodeo.
Mom would like a train to make or maybe perfume. Dad just likes tools – that’s all. He is hard to buy for, that’s what my mom says. Santa I live in my house outside Sedgewick. It’s a very big house and the horses
live outside. Santa I will go to the store and buy some milk and cookies for you. Just for you. Merry Christmas. I can’t wait for my makeup kit. I hope it is big. Love, Charlese.

Page 30 - 2014 Great Big Christmas Greetings, Tuesday, December 16, 2014 Love, Connor. Merry Merry Christmas. Dear Santa,
Dear Santa, Santa you are the best guy ever – even better than the Easter Bunny. I love your presents. You give me what I want every single time. I’ve been good, awesome this year. No fighting. I don’t even get into trouble once. I helped Dad in the shop once and once I even collected wood for a wiener roast. For Christmas I really want a plane, and a boat that can catch a shark. I have lots of brothers and only two sisters, just check their list to see what they want. I can’t think that much. Santa please bring my mom peace and quiet for Christmas. That’s what she always asks for but doesn’t get. Dad – maybe he wants a special camera to find things in the ground, but he already got one so probably he just also wants peace and quiet. They can have it together. Please bring my toys to my house in Alberta. It’s a white house with a rock wall. My family doesn’t want to leave any treats for you. I’ll bring it up.
Just wondering Santa, are you bringing us toys this year? Do the elves have everything made? I have been very good this year. I shovel all the snow off my sidewalk. I help Dad with the tools, and I wash dishes. Santa I really want a water gun for Christmas. I’ll just shoot targets – not my brothers. My little brother wants a baby. Dear Santa,
Dear Santa, Santa, I don’t know what to say. I just want toys – a remote control truck actually. I really want a snowmobile – a real one no toy one. So when I said toys I really didn’t mean that. The snowmobile should be red and black and REAL. I have been really good. Not one bit of fighting going on. If my sister wants to fight I just say STOP – that kind of works sometimes. I even share puzzles with her. I help feed chop to the calves and sometimes I check the cows. Rylan wants a tractor for Christmas - that can be a toy. My sister wants a toy princess. Mom would love kids that listen sometimes, but that’s not going to happen, especially with my sister – so maybe send her a stained glass window. Santa I don’t think my dad is going to get a present. I don’t know why, I think he has everything. Grandma likes buses, maybe send a new bowl so she can make taco salad. Grandpa would like a sandbox so I could play with it. Grandma Headon would like a big toy tractor so I would play with it when I visit. Good idea huh! Grandpa Headon would like a big tractor, but not a toy – a real one, so don’t make that mistake. I live south of Lougheed. My house is white with a black roof. I have lots of black and yellow cows – well just one and she’s really old. 90 years old. So when you see her you will know you are at my house. Oh no – I forgot she’s too old she’s at the auction. Just look for black cows. Love, Porter. Merry Christmas.
Thanks. Thanks for presents, I’m sure I will like them. I have been a super good boy. I can’t remember what I did to be good, I just know I was good. Santa, I want Angry Bird Toys, a brain toy, a pumpkin face, and new shoes. That’s it, my list is done.
My baby brother wants a toy turtle. Mom really needs new make-up, especially the red stuff for her lips, that’s important. Dad really wants the same toys that I want so he can play with me. I just live down there, I live beside my neighbours. My house is grey. Me and Mom will be making the most delicious cookies. I might eat them all if

they are really good. I might, just might, try and save one for you. Santa if I do eat them all I’ll give you a granola bar out of the cupboard. Bye. Thanks for the presents! Koen.
