Maren Vincett off to Ski Cross World Juniors Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Maren Vincett, of Galahad, is off to Sweden as part of Canada’s world junior Ski Cross team, where she will compete in the Ski Cross Junior World Championships April 14 and 15.

Alberta Alpine announced the final six skiers to represent Canada on March 22, including Vincett.

Alpine Canada says, “The 2024 Junior World team, supported by Sporting Life, is led by three athletes returning from the 2023 Junior World team.

“Emeline Bennett (Whistler, BC) will be defending her World Junior title after winning last year in Passo San Pellegrino (ITA). Also returning are Konnor Kimball (Edmonton, AB) who won the small final at last year’s Junior Worlds, and Nicholas Katrusiak (Whistler, BC) who combined with Bennett to finish second in the team event.”

“I am very happy for this group of athletes and I’m excited for them to have the opportunity to compete against the world’s best,” said Dave Ellis, Alpine Canada’s High-Performance Director, Ski Cross.

“Some of this group experienced this event last year and that should help the whole team embrace the competition.

“A huge congrats to the families, friends and clubs

behind the success of these young athletes.”

The 2024 Junior Worlds team is made up of three men and three women who qualified for the team through a selection criteria that considers world ranking, world ranking by age, as well as performance in the Nor-Am Series.

Solar Eclipse wows North Americans in its path

The solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, wowed everyone in its path, as the sky went as dark as night, and the sun disappeared, leaving only its corona visible behind the moon. While the event was less spectacular for the Flagstaff County region, with just a quarter of the sun covered by the moon, the next solar eclipse, expected in 2044, will allow most of Alberta to experience a total eclipse.

“Instead of filling their backseats with suspects, Killam RCMP officers are cramming their cruisers with groceries and essentials in support of the Flagstaff Food Bank,” says Acting NCO Corporal Jeremy Houle.

On Monday, April 29, the Flagstaff Food Bank and Killam RCMP will be onsite at the Killam Wild Rose Co-op Food store collecting donations.

“Detachment officers and staff will be on site with a police cruiser and are encouraging community members to cram it with food, personal hygiene items, or cash donations.”

Houle says the Flagstaff Food Bank wish list items include peanut butter, canned salmon, and any of the standard hamper items, including dish soap, laundry soap, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, bar soap, toilet paper, garbage bags, ketchup, cereal, Kraft Dinner, beans, crackers, soup, spaghetti, and pasta sauce.

“Killam RCMP is excited to see everyone at the event and thanks Flagstaff residents for their generosity in helping support their fellow community members,” says Houle.

OPINION National Volunteer Week happening April 14 - 20

Alberta’s National Volunteer Week is happening April 14 to 20, and nowhere should that be celebrated more than in the rural area.

This year’s theme is “every moment matters,” and I think that’s an outstanding thing to remember and celebrate.

Volunteers throughout the Flagstaff region are what make our communities great. Their contributions, big and small, help us enjoy a quality of life that is beyond compare.

Think for a moment what would happen if our volunteers disappeared....

There would be no minor sports in our communities, no service clubs, no rodeos, no festivals, in fact there’d be really next to nothing left.

Volunteers are vital to every community, and we should be celebrating the collective impact of volunteerism to the wellbeing of our communities.

The National Volunteer Week organization says, “The sharing of time, skills, empathy, and creativity is vital to the inclusivity, strength, and wellbeing of our communities. Volunteers are fundamental to meeting this challenging moment. By coming together, committing support, and increasing our collective efforts and impact, we contribute exponentially to the quality of life we all strive for.

“It’s in these moments, and the relationships between them, that we find greater purpose and a sense of belonging. By connecting and engaging with community, we come to know our importance. Volunteering matters. And by sharing these moments, we co-create the neighbourhoods, culture, and society we want to live in.”

To all who volunteer, we give our thanks for making our world better every day.

Thanks for the local news Dear Editor; I really wanted to extend a thank you to you Leslie for the news content in The Community Press. I’m looking at the March 27 issue which I received today. Lots of news coverage of the Flagstaff and area happenings.

The amount of time, travel, and effort put in to your news stories and photos is great. We can’t take that for granted.

Other newspapers representing much larger communities in the surrounding areas don’t seem to contain the local content which The Community Press provides.

Update on National Prayer Breakfast The Dominion of Canada denoted the dominion that God would have over the vast new nation of Canada, “A Mari Usque Ad Mare”—our national motto is the Latin translation of Psalm 72:8 which translates to “from Sea to Sea.” “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill to men”—Parliament Hill has Christian Symbols such as Luke 2:14 carved on the bell inside the Peace Tower.

From early missionaries and country churches to grand cathedrals and national leaders, the legacy of faith has shaped much of our nation, and it continues to be a significant factor. It built the foundation for modern pluralism and democracy. Today, there are many debates about this history, because of many who haven't always represented the Gospel well. However, in our increasingly divided country, I want to share one of the ways Christianity still brings people together in Canada.

There has been an organized weekly Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast meeting for many decades. This weekly gathering of Parliamentarians is open to all MPs and Senators to study God’s word, pray for each other, and pray for our nation. This is a non-partisan gathering, where we don’t share who does or doesn’t attend. For me, this plays an important role in my week representing you in our nation's capital. An extension to this weekly gathering is the National Prayer Breakfast, a large-scale event often seeing as many as 1000 people gather together to pray for our country, this year, for the 59th time!

The National Prayer Breakfast invites Canadians from all backgrounds, including Members of Parliament, Senators, Canadian and international religious leaders, ambassadors, and business leaders. The event’s mission is to gather in the Spirit of Jesus to pray for our nation. Along with the breakfast, there is a Leaders' Dinner which is held the evening before, and a Young Leaders’ Summit that welcomes young Christian leaders aged 18 to 30 who will join MPs, faith leaders, and others to explore how they can make a difference in our communities, in Parliament, and in our nation. This year's Prayer Breakfast theme is "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," and it will address important issues such as how to remain hopeful as we face challenges and what political leadership looks like as followers of Christ in a troubled world.

As a Member of Parliament, one is tasked with representing constituents, addressing big political issues, and many other important duties. However, being a part of the Parliamentary Prayer Gathering and an organizing committee member for the National Prayer Breakfast is a constant reminder of how important my faith is to my role as an MP. This gathering also shows how the Christian faith still plays an important role in Canada. And it reminds me of the hope for the future of our nation, no matter how bleak the political situation can appear.

Due to the interest of constituents, local churches, and faith leaders, as well as others who wonder about the history of events like the Prayer Breakfast, I believe that this was an important message to share in my bi-weekly news column. Sad news across our community and surrounding communities as Dr. Langeni will no longer be serving our community as a primary care provider, however we are fortunate enough that we will still have her in our community and health care settings.

She will still be a part of our health care team, serving primarily the emergency department and the admitted patients in our Daysland Hospital.

She also hopes to be able to keep her clinic doors open primarily to accommodate same-day appointments as well as booking procedures when time and availability allows. I think many of us can admire her willingness to continue to support us all as she takes some time to focus on her own family's health at this

time.

“A Conversation With The Cops” will be held on Tuesday, April 16, in Daysland at the library at 1 p.m. for all you attend.

Learn more about your community while getting to know our RCMP members, as well as what they are doing to keep our communities safe and what we can do as residents to do the same.

Daysland Golf Course has opened the clubhouse for lunch hours and even posted their first happenings of the year, at the end of April they will be holding a “used golf club sale and trade” where you can sell, trade, or even donate to their junior golf program, the opening day for the course has yet to be determined and is weather permitting.

On Good Friday, Bob Rombough had a heart attack. On Friday, April 5, he was home again, with another lease on life. He says that these stints are good for 40 years.

Congratulations to Roger Spady. He has been designated King’s Counsel, an honourary thing for lawyers. There were 100 designated, but only four were rural lawyers. Roger also celebrated a birthday this week and he is retiring at the end of the month.

Come to the Community Hall and check out the new lights. They are so much brighter. You can see them at the Farmer’s Market next week and at the Mother’s Day Breakfast.

Tank’s Electrical did the changeover for the Ag Society. The Ag Society meets on Tuesday night at the hall and the Library Board meets Tuesday morning at the library.

The Library Board will be discussing a change in hours to have the library open later once in a while. We would welcome your feedback.

The Legion members met on Thursday evening to plan the Mother’s Day Breakfast.

I think it has been going on for 50 years. The Le-

gion and Lions used to do it together, but there is no more Lions Club here.

It will be at the community hall. All are welcome.

The roast beef supper at Castor on Sunday night, put on by the Catholic Church was also a bargain at $20. There were eight of us from Alliance to support them and fill our bellies.

Chuck Wiart, Dell and Rose Marie Wickstrom, Karin McCrackin, Terry Goulier, Diane Dammann and Donna Chalifoux, and Laura Towers all enjoyed the meal and socializing.

I tested out our emergency services on Wednesday morning. It is pretty good. I called 911 for a fire at 6:13 a.m. and they had it all put out before 8:30 a.m. A fire in the fire pit got away with a wind gust and I

had it out on Tuesday, but a spark must have got under the old trailer garden shed. It burned the trailer and the old chop bin, a bit of corral boards, and a couple of bales of hay. It could have been so much worse. We have very good fire protection in Flagstaff.

berta Community Choir will present the Spring Cantata on Sunday, April 14, at the Alliance United Church. The Psalm Sunday Mass Choir event at Merna was well attended. I hope this one in Alliance has a good attendance. It is at 2:30 p.m. so don’t nap too long after lunch.

The next town council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in the council chambers, and is open to everyone to attend.

Flagstaff County hosted its annual farm truck inspection day in Killam on Friday, April 5, at the Wild Rose Co-op Cardlock, where Peace Officer Skyler Zelinski put his inspection duties to work.

Also on hand was MD of Provost Peace Officer Ian Green.

The event is held annually, offering free inspections for area farmers.

The Women’s Institute (WI) program this Wednesday is International Affairs. The Roll Call is Spring. We will be making plans to participate in Women Walk the World, a fundraiser for the international body of WI. We had some special music as part of the church service today.

Piano, guitar, and five voices sang “On My Father’s Side” It was

presentations. All of them were split up into six groups. Cleavers ages five to eight, Juniors ages nine to 11, Intermediate ages 12 to 15, and Senior age 16 to 21.

There was also one member in Junior and three Intermediate pre-

sentations.

Everything went well and everyone did a very good job.

Sedgewick Ladies Afternoon Bowling’s league champions are the Rolling Pins with 86 points. The team is composed of Shirley Tremblay, Jean Gabruck ,and Verna Erickson. The Bowling Bags were in second with 76 points.

The team is Karen Keogh, Kari Sanders, Judy Muirhead, Pat Leslie, and Denny Bergum.

Karen Keogh bowled the high single of 315, the high triple of 711, and has the high average of 177.

As for the teams, the Bowling Bags scored the high single of 210 and the high triple of 400.

Arrest made after complaint of male off-roading with firearm RCMP occurrences Friday, March 29 to Thursday, April 4 Friday, March 29 A report was made of a male who appeared to be hitchhiking. Subject dropped to his knees and was begging for a ride. Members patrolled. Subject not located.

Saturday, March 30 A male was reported driving an offroad vehicle and the Subject looked like he was holding a rifle. Subject was known to Members. He was located and arrested, held for a JIR and remanded to the Edmonton Remand Centre (ERC).

A suspicious person was reported on the side of the highway. A female was on the side of the highway and eventually picked up by a blue mini van. Members were a previous call and she was gone when they could attend.

An abandoned vehicle was reported on RR 155. Complainant believed it to be stolen. Members attended. Vehicle was stolen from Vegreville. Vehicle was towed.

A truck was reported stolen from Daysland. A suspicious person was also reported at this location. Subject had used the stolen truck and drove around the property damaging underground electrical wiring. No witnesses or surveillance.

Sunday, March 31 A report was made of an attempted theft of a vehicle in Daysland. Door handle and ignition damaged. Member attended. No witnesses or sus-

A report of harassing communications was made in Forestburg. The Complainant was contacted. There was one message, no threats, no fear for safety. The Subject was warned to not contact the Complainant.

Monday, April 1 A report was made of two Subjects trying to break into a residence in Daysland. Subjects were scared off the property and fled. Members attended.

A report was made of trespassing.

Complainant reported two Subjects were on his unoccupied farmhouse property. The Subjects were escorted off of the property. Nothing stolen.

Member spoke with one of the Subjects and was told to stay off the property.

Tuesday, April 2 A break and enter was reported from a business in Daysland. Subjects rammed through shop doors with a truck. Surveillance available. File still under investigation.

Two suspicious vehicles were reported parked on the highway in Sedgewick. Subjects appeared to be impaired. Patrols were made. Vehicles not located.

An attempted theft of truck was reported in Daysland. Door lock was punched out and steering column was damaged. Member attended. No witnesses or suspects.

Another vehicle was broken into in Sedgewick. Damage done to the driver’s door and ignition. Miscellaneous items stolen. No witnesses or suspects.

Approximately 500 litres of fuel was stolen from the Flagstaff County shed in Strome. Member attended. Subjects had cut the power and filled a slip tank. No witnesses or suspects.

Wednesday, April 3 Members were called to assist the Fire Department. Member attended.

Fire Chief advised they weren’t needed. Fire started as a grass fire in a burn barrel.

Two jerry cans of gas were reported stolen from the Complainant’s augers.

It happened within 1-2 hours of leaving the bins to haul grain. Crime prevention discussed. No witnesses or suspects.

Thursday, April 4 Killam Members responded to a 911 call that the Complainant was locked in a shed. The Complainant was locked in a shed by the Subject. Subject was known to the Complainant and Members. Subject arrested without incident. Held for JIR and released on conditions by Justice of the Peace.

A complaint was made of a suspicious vehicle north of the Amped parking lot in Sedgewick. Members attended. Patrols made and vehicle not located.

Suspicious vehicles reported driving around Daysland. One is a quad that is driving with no lights. It has been going in and out of a yard that is known to Members. Members pa-

Recent I.C.E. presentation both riveting and disturbing Over 563,461 reports of suspected child sexual exploitation are made every week Editor

Acting Sgt Scott Sterling, RCMP and Edmonton Police Service officer Graham Smith, both with the Northern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit were in Flagstaff County last Thursday, April 4, at an event hosted by Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch.

The two led an information session about internet child exploitation investigations, what their unit does, and offered some information as well as parental strategies to help youth navigate the internet and social media apps safely. Around 20 people showed up for the presentation, and Sterling said, “I don’t care if it was just 12 people, it’s worth educating one person in the hopes that they can tell someone else.

“This is a very, very important issue.”

Sterling warned the participants, prior to starting his presentation, “These are sensitive and disturbing topics.”

He started out with a single slide, and a quote from Jesse Jackson: “Children need your presence more than your presents.”

Sterling says child exploitation is an everybody problem. “Parents are not good at the internet. When we were kids, bullying happened at school, and we were safe at home. That’s not the case today.”

He said most parents, while growing up, got a message from their parents, “Watch out for the man in the white van with candy.” He told Thursday’s audience, “This is not the man in the white van. This is scarier.”

Sterling said the key takeaway from his presentation, he hopes, is that parents need to develop open communication with their children.

He talked a bit about child exploitation and what kinds of cases the I.C.E. division deals with. “First off, we don’t use the term ‘child porn’; it’s obsolete, and an abhorrent term.” Instead, the term child sexual abuse material or CSAM, is used.

Sterling says I.C.E. deals with this, as well as child luring, sextortion, making sexually explicit material available to children, voyeurism, and more.

He says that on average, 563,461 reports of suspected child sexual exploitation are made every week. This reporting is done by social media companies like Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, etc. He says any time they find a suspected CSAM image, a report is made, as is required by law.

In 2019, the Northern I.C.E. file intake was 1,374. That jumped to 2,126 in 2020, and to 3,515 in 2023. “And we are 200 per cent ahead of where we were last year at this time,” Sterling told the audience.

He says that 78 per cent of all CSAM

images and videos depict children under 12 years of age.

Sterling says the internet has three layers. On the surface web, you’ll find free access sites, such as Google, Yahoo, and Wikipedia. In the deep web, a log in is usually required, with a username and password, as for email or online banking.

Then there’s the dark web, which is TOR-encrypted, and often contains sites with online child exploitation and trafficking, and drug trafficking. “You can buy humans, or arrange murders... it’s horrible.” He says that CSAM images are used as currency on the dark web.

Sterling says when faced with a wide array of predators, one of the only lines of safety for children is to establish open communication with their parents.

Sterling explained that many of the I.C.E. files come from these initial reports, after they are filtered through National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the National Child Exploitation Crime Centre. “We perform triage; when we get the files... we’re on track for 9,000 intakes this year.”

Sterling said the I.C.E. unit’s priority one is always in-person reports. He says new CSAM images all have identifying numbers. “If a new number appears, that means it’s first-generation material, and it’s likely that there’s a child a risk.

He says that often entails actual child rescues. “It’s happening with real people and real kids in your communities.”

Sextortion is a common type of case he deals with. “You need to focus on behaviours, not people.” Sterling said that predators can be anywhere. “We have actual files charging pastors, youth workers, teachers, educational assistants, even recently a firefighter. These are people luring kids regularly operating in the space they are in.”

Sterling says that the people on the other end in sexploitation cases pose as potential new friends. “These people are predators, and your kids need to be warned of a potential new ‘friend’ urging them to the next app: Snapchat, Instagram, or Messenger to get them alone. Then come the requests for photos or videos, and once they have that it’s done.” He adds sometimes, but not often, this can include face to face meeting requests.

“Sextortion is on the rise. Fifty-eight per cent of parents say they don’t feel prepared if their child were to have a nude photo leaked.”

Sterling says that’s where it’s vital to have that open and honest communica-

When confronted, his son admitted a ‘friend’ had recommended it. It also provided access to porn.

He says 98 per cent of offenders are seemingly unknown to the child offline, however that number is changing.

Smith reported that police are seeing an increase in known offenders to known victims.

Sterling says one of the key things to teach children is to be wary when a new friend immediately wants you to go to a different app. “Don’t let them take you to a secondary location or app.” He also says that when a photo is shared online, that’s a digital footprint that will follow your children for the rest of their

lives. “That includes photos and videos shared by parents.”

He talked about some apps that are of concern to police, including one called Omegle, which died in 2023, and a new one, called WIZZ, that police are watching closely, as it has many similarities to Omegle.

Sterling says, “If you have kids, they’re sending nudes.” He adds, “Have that talk with your children.”

In sextortion cases, he says that as soon as the photo is sent, the “friendship” is over and the extortion begins.

“There’s an immediate loss of control, and the predator threatens blackmail and sextortion, either in the form of payment, or more photos.”

He warns parents against victim blaming, “Your child needs protection.”

Sterling says the worst thing you can do is ignore it and pretend it will go away. He says the first instinct is to delete everything, and says that can hamper an investigation.

Sterling says there are often signs that your child is under stress, but unless you know their baseline, you may not recognize them. “Watch for clues.”

He recounted a recent case of his involving multiple victims. “Those with the most involved parents were the least victimized; those with the least involved parents were the most victimized - from underwear photos to physical penetration.”

He used the analogy of a trojan horse.

“We’re letting these “harmless” devices into our homes, and into your child’s bedroom, yet they are full of predators.”

Jeffery Straker’s performance concludes DaysArts season Kari Janzen Staff Reporter The fifth and final show of DaysArts’ annual concert series was held at the Daysland Palace Theatre on Thursday, April 4.

Musician Jeffery Straker of Punnichy, Saskatchewan, along with his guitarist Bryn Besse and base player, Connor Walsh, graced the stage Thursday night.

From a small town himself, Straker connected well with the Daysland audience with his relatable and familiar stories and songs.

“Jeffrey Straker grew up taking piano lessons in a small farming town in Saskatchewan and he has gone on to perform shows all across Canada, Europe, and Latin America,” the emcee said in Straker’s introduction.

“The rootsy storytelling of his songs has the power to transport a listener out onto a lake in Canada’s North or from Main Street Daysland to a magical place.

Jeffery Straker’s songwriting has drawn critical comparisons to the likes of Harry Chapin, Kris Kristofferson. Murray McLauchlan, and Billy Joel.

“In the years 2020 and 2021, this evening’s entertainer was awarded the roots/folk artist of the year at the Saskatchewan Music Awards. The Saskatchewan Country Music Awards has named Jeffrey Straker keyboard player of the year three years in a row,” he said.

Straker sang about some of his life experiences including everything from feelings of regret, loss, and falling in love to grain elevators. He opened the night with ‘Beauty In Grey.’

“I’m going to be singing you some tunes tonight that I’ve written, and this first song is about being on the road.

We’ve just done 12 shows across Western Canada. It’s great to be winding on our

way through Alberta now,” Straker said.

Part of the lyrics of Beauty in Grey includes a line that says, “Some days I work for dollars, some days for dimes.” Straker told a story about the very first time he played that song for a live audience. During it, a woman came up onto the stage and placed a loonie and a dime on his piano.

He posted about it on social media, and from then on audience members still give him a dollar and a dime at his performances.

Straker kept the audience well engaged with stories and the background of each of his songs.

He described in great detail his first summer job as a young man, hauling out the collection of dust in the boot of a grain elevator in his hometown.

“I’m really fond of grain elevators; they’re really important furniture on the prairies. They decorate the place like nothing else.

“I call them prairie skyscrapers. My statistic for Saskatchewan is that there were 1,800 of them at the peak. Today, there are 274, and they’re disappearing. They’re being knocked down. They’re burning down. They’re falling down.

“So I wrote a song called More Than Two by Fours and Timbers,” he said.

Near the end of the show, Straker and his team played one song without the mics and speakers, to give the theatre the opportunity to show off the natural acoustics the building was designed for.

“When you do a show in Daysland, they’re ready to have you back no sooner than 13 years later.

“So I’m delighted to have the invite to come back. In all honesty, I remembered that piano and this room.

“I’m positive people have told you this before, but you are so lucky to have this room in your community, this theatre, it’s so beautiful,” said Straker.

Roth came out to teach the team some basic skills.

Team coach Derek Kroetsch says, “They’re really great guys. They had so much knowledge that the team will have them come back this week for more training.

“It highlights both the level of knowledge of baseball in the community with so many talented past coaches and the current young players that are wanting to soak up more skills.

“We are hopeful that in the future there will be more local training camps

for the local young players to give them the skills to compete with the city players.”

Well hello folks, now wasn't that a party? The Flagstaff Scottish Club put on a fabulous free evening of entertainment to celebrate Tartan Day. The Elks hall was decorated with huge back drops that made you feel like you were in a different world. There was not a hint of the Bingo hall decor. They even offered Scottish memorabilia to view or purchase.

The hall was filled to the brim with eager folks coming to hear the Battle River Pipes and Drums perform in all their tartan splendour.

They were just breathtaking!

In addition we enjoyed listening to the Ratte String Quartet, the Golden Prairie 4-H Buskers and their colourful dancing ribbons, the delightful, talented Scottish dancers, Dan Fee introducing us to the unique Uilleann

Pipes and to end the evening the songs by Sarah Waters. Her last song was"Danny Boy" and her rendition brought silence and some tears to the audience. It was absolutely heavenly. Yes folks, this was an evening to remember.

The entertainment was free and you were able to purchase food and refreshments. I enjoyed a meal that included Haggis. Do you know what Haggis is made from? Haggis is a savoury pudding that contains sheep liver, lungs, and stomach or sausage casing, onions oatmeal, and suet and spices. It reminds me of ground beef with some additives that add a bit of a zing to your taste buds.

Pretty darn yummy. Scottish folks are known for being thrifty, so why waste any part of an animal you are butchering, right?

There was a gentleman all dressed in Scottish attire near our table and I just had to compliment him on his splendid appearance. He smiled and asked if I

knew what he wore under the kilt? I said I didn't and he replied, it was lipstick.

With all the noise in the hall I figured I heard incorrectly, till his wife firmly replied that the lipstick colour better be pink. So there you have it folks. Men wear pink underwear under their kilts, now who would have guessed that? I bet the underwear is made from sheep wool and dyed pink. Waste not want not... tee hee.

I was Googling to see what bagpipes are made of. You guessed it, they were traditionally made from the skin of an animals, mostly sheep. The skin would be turned inside out and pipes would be placed where the legs and neck would have been. These days, bagpipes are usually made with artificial fabric such as Gortex. The

history of the bagpipe goes all the way back to the middle east. How interesting.

Did you know that playing the bagpipes was once banned in Scotland, after Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite uprising of 1745?

Many chose to play the pipes in secret, risking the harsh punishment if someone was to hear it being played.

Hardisty K-Club hosts successful pasta making night Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Hardisty K Club hosted a pasta making workshop this past Saturday, April 6, featuring Madeleine Reiter, owner of “Pasta by Madeleine,” operating out of Lloydminster. Reiter grew up in Hardisty, and is happy to return home to share

her skills.

Participants learned how to make pasta from scratch, making and filling ravioli, and then enjoyed the fruits of their labours, cooking and eating it afterwards.

The K-Club is very active in Hardisty, hosting an annual retreat at the lake, events such as the pasta night, and even host pickleball.

Caroline Catherine Volk (September 5, 1939 April 1, 2024) Caroline Catherine Volk of Daysland, AB, formerly of Heisler, AB, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024, at the age of 84 years.

Phillip Orville Misner

(May 8, 1965 April 5, 2024) Phillip Orville Misner was born on May 8, 1965 to Orville and Caroline Misner.

He passed away suddenly on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the age of 58 at his home north of Bawlf.

Compost bins out for spring yard cleanup Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff Waste has recently placed compost bins in all the region’s communities to collect yard waste and grass clippings from residents.

The bins serve a dual purpose, not only keeping organic yard waste out of the landfill, but the material collected is also used to expand Flagstaff Waste’s stored topsoil.

Murray Hampshire, Flagstaff Waste Manager, says, “We compost the material in large windrows at the landfill, and stockpile it for when we do final closure.

“We know we have a shortage of stored topsoil for the final cover, and we can use the compost as a solid amendment and make the topsoil go further as final cover.”

The bins are open only to grass clippings, unbagged, except in compostable paper bags, leaves, garden cleanout, failed compost bins, and vegetable waste from the garden.

Compost bin sites have had problems in the past with residents using them for household waste disposal and placing grass or yard waste in plastic bags, however these are not allowed.

Waste should be emptied from the plastic bags into the bin, and the bags returned home to be reused.

Kitchen scraps are another item that should not be placed into the compost collection bins, as these may contain products that are not suitable for composting.

Branches are a perennial issue at the compost bin sites.

Some municipalities have separate branch collection sites nearby. Check with your local municipal office to see what the policy is regarding branch disposal.

Under no means should they be placed into the compost bins, even if broken down into smaller pieces.

Joan Diane Kelndorfer

January 5, 1954 — March 24, 2024 Joan grew up in Calgary becoming an RN in 1975. She worked at the Chinook Nursing Home for many years before moving to Cranbrook in 1998 for a better opportunity, working at the Green Memorial Home,

before moving onto Cranbrook Society for Community Living as the Nurse Supervisor of two homes. Joan retired in 2021.

Joan spent her life helping and caring for others with life challenges, and she had a gift for showing compassion for all who met her. Joan will be missed by everyone she touched in life. Rest in Peace Joan.

Joan is survived by her brother Dan and wife Debi; nephews Tyler (Sara) and Jesse (Jenna); great nieces Kaycee, Hanna, and Piper; and by very special friends Carol Kennedy, Pam Single-

tary, and Margaret Laidlaw.

Joan was predeceased by her mom Helen in 1984 and dad Gordon in 2008.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday May 4, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Killam Cemetery, with a light lunch to follow at the Killam Seniors Hall.

Memorial donations in Joan’s honour may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

It was a busy weekend for dance families in Flagstaff County. Dancers from Battle River Dance Academy out of Hardisty and Alliance, Norazz out of Sedgewick, and Landon Peacock Academy of Dance from Killam all made their way to the Heart and Soul Festival in Lloydminster. Not all people who are registered organ and tissue donors actually become organ donors at the end of their lives. In fact, very few do. Only 1-2 per cent of people who die can be considered for organ and tissue donation. That's because people have to die in a very specific way for organ donations to be an option. Sterling says if your child has been exploited, the first report should be to local police, adding, “And ‘No’ is not an acceptable response, nor is ‘There’s not much we can do.’”

Ag societies touted as vital organs in rural Alberta George Lee Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Agricultural societies boast an established history as the heart of Alberta’s rural communities and the province wants to keep them pumping.

“Ag societies help communities across Alberta thrive by providing events, volunteer opportunities, recreational facilities and so much more,” said Agriculture and Irrigation Minister R.J. Sigurdson, MLA for Highwood.

“Alberta’s government recognizes the hard work that goes into all of this, and we’re incredibly grateful to the thousands of volunteers that make it possible.”

Rodeo grounds, ice rinks, community kitchens, parks full of farm equipment, fairs, tournaments – if those or other physical hubs or enduring events exist in your rural community, chances are there’s an agricultural society connection.

The first ag society in what would become Alberta arrived on the scene 1879, says information posted on the website of the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies. Today 291 predominantly rural ag societies operate, and 20 of them are at least 100 years old. Another 24 celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2022, the website documents.

It takes more than 52,000 volunteer hours a year to support the societies’ work – that’s $8.9 million worth of labour – as they help keep the lights on and the roofs intact for more than 700 facilities, and run events that attract 1.6 million attendees a year.

Sigurdson told the legislative assembly March 14 that his ministry intends to keep providing grants for major ag facility repairs and operations.

The Agricultural Societies Infrastructure Revitalization Program continues at $2.5 million a year in all.

It funded 34 projects in the last approvals round, among them $74,360 for the Saskatoon Lake Agricultural Society to put towards upgrades in a community hall for commercial kitchen appliances, wheelchair ramps and widened entries.

The funding for Saskatoon Lake, just northwest of Grande Prairie in northern Alberta, is one of three examples under the program provided in an email from the ministry.

A community about 50 km northeast of Red Deer in central Alberta benefited, too. The Clive Athletic and Agricultural Society received $91,580 to add space and storage to dressing rooms and widen the walkways between them.

And Big Country Agricultural Society received approval for $100,000 to repair a recreation centre in Oyen, a southern Alberta town east of Calgary near the Saskatchewan border. Hail extensively damaged the roof and other parts of the Crossroads Centre, an arena for rodeos, and riding and other events.

Other provincial funding available to ag societies includes $16 million in Budget 2024 towards the Community Initiatives Program, or CIP. Continued on Page 27

As well, agricultural societies benefit from grants from other departments, governments, groups, businesses and sponsors, which the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies posts online.

“How can we ensure that ag societies will continue to be valued and acknowledged contributors to our communities for decades to come?” Johnson asked.

Perhaps a designated day will help.

Sigurdson said last year he made Sept. 21 Ag Societies Day in Alberta.

“There isn’t a month that goes by where ag societies don’t leave a positive impact on our communities and our agriculture sector, and by observing this day each year, we can ensure all of Alberta knows it.”
