Josh Birks wins YMC Invitational Local cowboy ready for the big show Michelle Pinon Editor
Some of the world’s best cowboys came to Lamont to compete in the Professional Bull Riders Young Money Cattle Company Invitational on Friday, April 15. Birks, who had just returned from a family visit in Australia two days prior to the event, was in fine form, and
was the first bull rider to earn points during his first ride. There was a tough pen of bulls on hand during the competition, but Birks managed to put together another fabulous ride on the bull ‘Terrible’ to earn 85 points and the best overall score to win the championship buckle. Now he has his sights set on the big show, the Calgary Stampede. It will be his first trip to
“The Greatest Show On Earth,” and has the talent and determination to make it happen. With all the confidence in the world, Birks said, “My goal is to win the Stampede.” Birks, who grew up on a 4,500 acre ranch in Australia, said he began riding calves at three years of age. He has three sisters and one brother, and Birks said they are all into rodeo as well.
He has been working in the Lamont area for several years now, and considers it a second home. Last year Birks won the Lamont Bull-ARama, and his winning streak continues to impress. With a great work ethic and notable track record in the business, there seems to be nothing to hold this 26-year-old from making his dream come true.
Birks holds up his championship buckle after winning the YMC Invitational.

Opinion Courage Exemplified In my line of work you get to meet so many people. I also get the opportunity to learn new things and experience many special events and activities. I was so honoured to meet Sharon MacLean at the Haying in the ‘30’s annual fundraiser in support of local cancer patients who are undergoing treatments. The funds help offset the expenses of travelling to and from appointments as well as treatments outside of their own community. “I love being here,” said Sharon, who is in the final stage of cancer. and has faithfully attendSharon MacLean ed each and every Haying in the ‘30’s fundraising supper and auction since its inception 11 years ago. She told the people in attendance to embrace every day. Sharon has lived and worked in the Town of Lamont for many years. She said she worked at the hospital for 30 years, and praised hospital staff who have cared for her since she began residing in long term care. “You have to keep going forward,” stated Sharon, who keeps moving forward in her life by setting goals for herself. Attending Haying in the ‘30’s fundraiser was one goal she worked hard to achieve, and now she is working towards making a show at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre on May 4. Sharon is also aiming for a nice visit with family over the May long weekend. Not only does Sharon pray for another day to open her eyes and see the sun, she also embraces each and every day. She knows how to live life to the fullest, even when the number of days she has on earth is becoming fewer and fewer. Her faith, family, friends and staff at the Lamont Health Care Centre are what keeps her strong and focused. She is a shining example of grace and dignity. Her courage is amazing, and her words and actions are a wonderful example for all of us to follow. Thank you Sharon.
Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, I was given a copy of the Town of Lamont’s 2015 Audited Financial Statements by someone
that thought I could communicate with town council. Under the Salary and benefits disclosure for
municipal officials were the names of members of town council as well as the chief administrative officer and deputy chief
administrative officer. Here is the listing of salaries, benefits and allowances:
My last letter to the town chief administrative officer stated that her negligence was creating hardship and additional expenses in damaged private property. The solutions is simple, bring 46th Street back to the level it’s supposed to be, lower than the sidewalks, and water will have the road as a drainage channel rather
than finding its way through cracks in the sidewalks and driveways. The expense would hardly be more than her paycheque, and maybe her assistant could kick in with a bonus? Then I could fix my driveway without having to do it repeatedly. Since I am not entitled to an answer because her
town foreman said there is nothing wrong with drainage, I will be contacting Municipal Affairs to send me the job description of council. This action has to be some kind of fraud for pay that puts every other human being at a substandard level, and carry that burden with taxes of supporting not one, but two useless govern-
ments. At least the county has a grader operator that makes them look good. By the way, I’m told on good authority that Bruderheim is not interested in annexing the Town of Lamont. Regards, Alec Babich

Elimination of grant in lieu of taxes creates $10,000 shortfall in funding Michelle Pinon Editor
Members of Lamont town council were told that the Province would not be reinstating the Grants in Lieu of Taxes for housing units operated by public housing management bodies during its April 8 meeting. That decision will be costly for the municipali-
ty. According to a request for decision from CAO Sandi Maschmeyer, “In the Town of Lamont, this affected two properties with a combined tax levy of close to $10,000. This elimination of funding from the Province means that our revenue is decreased by that amount, however, those properties still require all the services that are provided to every other
property in town.” Council passed a motion to send the Hon. Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing, a letter of concern regarding the elimination of the grant, and the impact the removal of funding will have on the municipality that will have to increase property taxes to cover the $10,000 that has been downloaded onto the rest of

From Where I Sit:Worth the Effort
By Hazel Anaka In the continuing saga of getting to the bottom of my heel pain my chiropractor referred me for an ultrasound test. After being escorted to an exam room I lay facedown on the table. It would have been easy to fall asleep during the mid-day appointment. Who can’t afford a few extra winks? It also would have been easy to just passively lie there. But I’m a
opening available to the three thousand who were vying for it. These are three thousand foreign doctors who’ve passed all the qualifying exams. The selected person then works for two years under the supervision of a Canadian doctor. The numbers of foreign family physicians accepted is much higher but so are the numbers attempting to get approval. So this woman who was doing surgery in India is now spreading gel on body parts in Edmonton to capture images. I said you must bring a lot more expertise to the work you’re doing than the average tech. She said yes, her coworkers seem to appreciate it. She went on to say she was quite satisfied with her job. Secretly I wondered if it was resignation or grace in the face of reality. I said I guess living in

That the test could reveal any tears or nodes on my plantar fascia. That ultrasound is a non-invasive way to get a peak into the human body. I asked the woman doing the test if it was okay to talk to her. I didn’t want to compromise my test by distracting her. I asked why she chose ultrasound technology as her field. Imagine my surprise when she told me she was an obstetriciangynecologist in her home country and this had been part of duties there. I asked if she was trying to get qualified to work as a physician in Canada. Then I heard about the impossible odds. In her specialty there was one

RCMP seek assistance on break and enter in Lamont County Fort Saskatchewan, AB. On Monday April 11, the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP responded to a call for service in regards to a Break and Enter to a rural property in the area of Highway 29 and Range Road 195 in Lamont County. At approximately 2:45 a.m. on April 11, 2016, security cameras on site observed two suspects removing a 2008 Artic Bear Heater (valued at $15,000.00) from the
location. The individuals (male or female) left the location in a newer dark colored Dodge ¾ tonne quad cab truck with factory rims and a chrome front bumper. One of the suspects had a very distinctive walk as if they were slouching with their arms dangling by their side. The investigation continues. A need for speed can have deadly consequences RCMP issue facts during traffic safety month SUBMITTED ARTICLE The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP wish to advise the residents of Fort Saskatchewan and Lamont County that the 2016 Alberta Traffic Safety Plan has designated April as Speed Month. Spring is here and that means that drivers have a tendency to increase their speeds, resulting in an increased number of collisions. One in four fatal crashes involve a
driver travelling at a speed unsafe for the road conditions. This time of year road conditions can change quickly, from gravel covered sections to black ice, which adds complications to the driving environment. The harsh truth about speed-related collisions is, they don’t always kill those involved. In fact, brain injuries are one of the most common injuries that result from speed-related collisions.
Speed Facts •In 2014, a quarter of fatal collisions involved one or more drivers travelling at a speed too great for the given conditions as reported by enforcement agencies •Speeding doesn’t always kill. Brain injuries are a common injury that results from speed-related collisions •Speeding can cause long-term consequences that affect both you and your family
•Speeding reduces the effectiveness of seatbelts and other safety devices such as air bags and side impact beams •Demerits for speeding range from two points (exceeding the posted limit by less than 15 km/h) to six points (exceeding the posted limit by more than 50 km/h) •Over a five year period, 451 people were killed and 11,753 were injured in collisions
involving unsafe speed (2010-2014) Driving a few km/h over the posted speed limit: •Decreases your field of vision and your peripheral vision •Extends the distance required to stop your vehicle •Increases the chances that you will lose control of your vehicle •Increases the chance of death or injury if there is a crash

Bruderheim Agricultural Society volunteer receives lifetime achievement award Michelle Pinon Editor
When Vic Schneider arrived at the Bruderheim Ag. Society’s monthly potluck supper and meeting last Tuesday evening he thought everything was business as usual. While talking with the society’s vice-president about whether it was time to throw in the towel, and cutback on some of his responsibilities, she replied: “You can’t Vic.” Vic was also surprised to see his son, and asked why he was there. “We’re members too Dad.” So he never thought anything about the comment. Then a short while later a special Western style historical bench with wagon wheels was unveiled. Even though he hadn’t quite pieced everything together, Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch came to sit down with him and presented a plaque on behalf of the town. “It was a total shock. I

in the summer of 2007. “The chuckwagon association came to us because they needed a new home.” With plenty of blood, sweat, tears, and tonnes of sand and dirt, the race track was completed just in time for the Heartland Ag. Days and Alberta Chuckwagon and Chariot Finals the following year. “Since then we’ve never looked back. Vic keeps busy harrowing, weeding, and mowing grass on the 50 acre site that the ag. society leases from the Town of Bruderheim. Vic, who will be turning 88 this July, is so thankful to be alive, since a health scare late
last summer. “It was the first time I rode in an ambulance,” says Vic, who had only been in the hospital two other times in his life. “It was quite the ordeal, but I’m so thankful to be here.” Vic is also very grateful for the lifetime membership award for his 45 years of service. “It (the award) means an awful lot to me.” He was also happy that so many of his family were able to be there in person for the special presentation. The honour symbolizes his many years of dedicated service to the ag. society, and God willing, he hopes to be back at the track come race day on August 19.

Rash of wildfires break out in Lamont County
PHOTO COURTESY OF LAMONT COUNTY Lamont County firefighters responded to an outbreak on Township Road 550 and Range Road 193 on Tuesday afternoon. The fire restarted from one that had started several days ago.

Local area residents chipped in with shovels to contain a fire in a yard and pasture about 12 miles north of St. Michael early Sunday afternoon. A garage and a couple of buildings and a corral were razed to the ground. Right, Chris Zachoda, manned a fire hose, while Dave Boyko, pointing his finger, directs him to some more hot spots.

Haying in the 30’s raises more than $15,000 for local cancer patients
MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS
CFCW morning show host and celebrity Stella Stevens auctions off tickets to the Big Valley Jamoboree while auctioneer Bernie Florkow looks on. There were a multitude of live and silents auction items up for sale during the 11th annual fundraiser in St. Michael Saturday, April 16. The community centre saw a packed house of area residents who enjoyed a wonderful supper prepared and served by members of the St. Michael and District Agricultural Society. A moment of silence was held before the supper to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. MC Mae Adamyk said more than $15,300 was raised during the evening, and she, along with other volunteers are grateful for the support, especially given current economic conditions in the region.

Perogies, petunias, baking, paintings, handmade crafts, tools, quilts, tractor seat, picnic table, wood carvings, and a load of gravel were just a few of the many items that were sold during the fundraiser. During the first Haying in the 30ʼs fundraiser $12,000 was raised, and it has varied, all the way up to its all time high of $22,000.

Andrew School and FCSS co-host dinner theatre
MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS
Whether it was real news or not, there was plenty of action to be had during Andrew Schoolʼs drama production Crazytown. The play was held in conjunction with a dinner that was prepared by members of the Friends of FCSS Society. Around 60 people attended the third annual dinner theatre on April 14. In this scene Sheldon Grimes, played by Alex Slasynski was given the gears for being too nice, and was persuaded to follow Ricky Rudemanʼs example, far left, who was played by Devon Hamaliuk. Detective Mills, far left, played by Hope Boster, conducts the interrogation along with Detective Kimball, played by Tyra Shulko.
News anchors Babs Buttlebee, played by Hope Boster, and Jim Pickles, played by Alex Slasynski give viewers all the fluff thatʼs fit to print.
Doris Doppleflop, played by Tyra Shulko, gives the weather report.
Nadia Kneejerk, played by Alyshia Bryks, (left), speaks while Gertrude Hubs, played by Tyra Shulko, opens a bag of chips
Austin Brushboss, (left), played by Carson Slasynski, takes viewers through a step by step demonstration, while Oliver Flossboss, played by Brandon Wipf, demonstrates.
Heartland 101: Rail transport in the Heartland SUBMITTED ARTICLE Rail lines have been transporting goods and people across Canada for over 130 years. Since the completion of the railway to the Pacific Ocean in 1885, rail has been a reliable means of transport. Currently, Canada’s railways move $282 billion worth of goods every year, making it one of the most important modes of transport for our economy. Everything from cars and lumber to grain and consumer electronics are transported by rail, as trains are both reliable and efficient. According to the Railway Association of Canada, one train, on average, moves the same amount of freight as 280 big trucks. This helps reduce congestion on highways and limits vehicle emissions. The rail industry is regulated through Transport Canada and under the Railway (Alberta) Act to ensure
the safety of employees, shippers, and communities. Rail cars carrying dangerous goods meet strict standards. Proper packaging and documentation is required. Safety procedures and training are practiced regularly. Locally, training with first responders occurs in a number of ways. Alberta Transportation Dangerous Goods and Rail Safety provides inspector and first responder courses. Responsible Care companies in the region routinely bring the TRANSCAER Safety Training Tank Car - a rail tank car
converted into a classroom on wheels - to our area to train industry and municipal first responders and for community education and outreach purposes. Mutual aid organization Northeast Region Community Awareness Emergency Response (NRCAER) conducts training exercises for rail incidents with hazardous material release. Training and practicing allows emergency responders to test plans before an incident occurs. Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is a major hub for rail shipment of local-
ly produced commodities including oil, propane, plastics, metals, fertilizer and more. Rail is particularly critical for the downstream, or value added, sector. Unlike the upstream sector that relies mainly on pipelines to ship product to market, operations in the Heartland often ship product by rail as well. As industrial activity in the region increases, we will see an expansion in rail traffic over the next few years. This includes projects by Pembina, Keyera, Plains Midstream, Cenovus, TransCanada, Alberta Midland Rail, and oth-
