Local MP a guest speaker as dynamic front-runner for Conservative leadership draws over-flowing crowd to Edmonton’s River Cree

A crowd estimated at over 4,000 overflowed from the River Cree events centre to the lobby, with vehicles still lined up to get into the parking lot when the dynamic Carleton, Ontario, MP Pierre Poilievre, 42, came to give his pitch as a candidate to be the next leader of the federal Conservative Party. The meet and greet on Thursday just west of Edmonton featured an introduction by Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs (among others), who has thrown her support toward Poilievre, a Calgary native. Stubbs criticized former leader Aaron O’Toole for not having a leadership review after the Tories were defeated in the last election by the Trudeau Liberals.

In February O’Toole was ousted by his party by a vote of 73-45.

Poilievre wows a full house at River Cree with stump speech

BY JOHN MATHER “Pierre stands for the exact same things he says in French as he does in English,” said Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs to a crowd of several thousands at Edmonton’s River Cree Casino Apr. 14.

“With Pierre what you see is what you get! He will stand up with all Canadians.

“He will never take Albertans for granted and he knows that the place for Alberta is in Canada.”

With that she introduced Conservative leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre, who came to Edmonton to give a stump speech following a very successful evening in Calgary two days prior with an estimated crowd of 6,500.

Stubbs was joined on the platform by fellow MPs Tim Uppal and Michael Cooper, and former MP Kerry Diotte all who are supporting Poilievre’s leadership bid.

“It’s great to be back in my home province of Alberta,” said Poilievre as he mounted the centred stage to deliver a 45minute speech.

He quickly gave a summary of his childhood background and upbringing in both Saskatchewan and Alberta before hitting the meat of his speech.

Throughout his talk he peppered it with such catch phrases as “freedom” and “gatekeepers.”

decided you were a ‘germ spreading, hateful villain,” he said, as he described how some freedoms of Canadians had been eroded during the pandemic.

“Even though this same trucker was alone in his truck all day. “ “Because of a medical decision that should have rested in his hands, suddenly Liberals like Jean Charest and Justin Trudeau are calling them criminals.

“You know I was proud to stand with those peaceful and law abiding truckers who fought for their freedoms.”

As boos rained down at any mention of Trudeau, he added he was proud to stand with

Conservatives who wanted to see an end to vaccine mandates and pandemic restrictions.

Yells of “We’re proud of you, Pierre,” cascaded through the crowd as he held them in the palm of his hand with his speech.

He further discussed economic freedoms where young people can’t afford their own homes.

“Can you imagine the hardship and lack of independence these young people must feel when they can’t even afford their own homes,” he said. “It’s tough on them living in today’s society.”

He added that he had talked to people in his home riding of Carleton, near Ottawa, where they

worked in the home construction industry building homes they knew they never would have an opportunity to own.

“And then there are the families that have had to cut back on their diet just to try and afford a couple of affordable meals because of inflation,” he added. “A guy works all week and then can’t afford to go hunting or fishing because he can’t afford the price of fuel at $1.60 per litre.

And now Justin Trudeau wants to tax trucks.

“Conservatives will fight tooth and nail to stop the truck tax and axe the carbon tax,” he stated to loud cheers.

He said he was running to be the Prime Minister of Canada to put Canadians back in control of their lives and make the nation the “freest nation on earth.”

This launched his segment lambasting the

“gatekeepers,” the bureaucrats who run the financial institutions and other departments which create more red tape and keep ordinary Canadians from making progress.

“We have 30-year highs in inflation in the past year alone and that doesn’t even include the hike in housing prices,” he said. “We’re going to bring in sound money policies in this country and bring back the Bank of Canada’s original mandate.”

He said Conservatives would tackle the deficit by cutting the Trudeau slush funds, and bring back a free market system.

“And yeah, we’ll defund the CBC,” which brought the loudest cheers of the night from the partisan crowd, leading to chants of “defund the CBC,” for several seconds.

“We’ll also bring in

some common sense spending rules,” added Poilievre. “Politicians have to start pinching their pennies just like everybody else does.”

“We’ll give respect and fairness to Western Canada,” he stated.

“When I’m Prime Minister the era of telling Albertans to put up and shut up will definitely be over.”

He said he would retroactively start paying back to Albertans, money the province was owed through stabilization funding.

He added he would fight to see Alberta get closer and closer to full per capita representation in the House of commons.

“I will only appoint Senators from this province that are elected by the people of this province,” he stated.

Town of Lamont considers advice from university students’ flooding study Council wanting to curb repeat of previous area floods

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Town of Lamont got some advice on creating a watershed policy to assist with flood reduction by way of a study done by students in the Political Science Studies program at MacEwan University.

Town administration applied to the Learning Partnership Opportunities Program in Dec. 2021 and the completed study was discussed during the Lamont Town Council meeting Apr. 12.

One area of concern identified by the study was a lack of data for the watershed in the region.

“The only assessment done on the flood water risks in the town itself was done in 1998. This was done after the flood that had caused some damage to the local area but since then there has been no further assessments nor have the problem areas been addressed, other than the widening of the channel in the Town of Lamont after a flood in 1982,” stated the report.

In addition, the team revealed that the closest point of data collection for water levels was an old federal hydrometric monitoring station, at the mouth of Beaverhill Creek and downstream of the Lamont Creek, that closed down in 1986.

In addition to the lack of data, the report identified three other issues

namely unaddressed chokepoints, downstream beaver dams, and lack of inter jurisdictional communication.

“Because one of the problem areas for the Town of Lamont is the maintenance of the beaver dams downstream that are outside of their jurisdiction, which can cause a backlog of water and possibly flood the area, there is value for the Town of Lamont to consider forming an alliance with nearby jurisdictions such as Bruderheim, and the County of Lamont itself to coordinate the maintenance of the beaver dams,” said the report.

“It would also be beneficial to include other stakeholders such as farmland owners and other landowners who have property in flood prone areas.”

Lamont County declared a local state of emergency in April 2018 when spring melt yielded the ‘worst flooding in 30 years.

Again, in June 2020, Lamont County declared another local state of emergency after more than 55 millimeters of rain fell in 10 days, flooding fields and closing roads. Prior to this, the flooding of 127 culverts in 1997 caused alarm over the large volume of water.

Councillor Dave Taylor, grateful for the

study, offered caution during the town council discussion.

“I certainly hope administration and council, current and future, will keep this in mind. I think everyone remembers what happened in BC last summer and last fall when several studies were done like this with recommendations that went mostly unheeded,” he said. “I think we know what happened there in their period of extreme aquatic induction.”

Last Nov., flooding in BC became the most expensive disaster in Canadian history causing $7.5 billion in damages.

Councillor Al Harvey also offered his thoughts to Director of Operations and Infrastructure Tyler Edworthy.

“I look forward to your discussions with Lamont County in relation to trying to keep water out of this community and trying to manage their water before it gets to our community,” he said.

In terms of managing flood risk, the report also identified that structures, such as dams and dikes, are an option that could block or redirect water from going to areas that may be harmful to property in the Town of Lamont.

Lamont Town council accepted the report as information.

Opinion Poilievre ticks all the right boxes - but caution still needed

BY JOHN MATHER He came in like the reincarnation of Ralph Klein!

Federal Conservative leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre arrived in Edmonton Apr. 14 to pitch his candidacy to a large crowd of several thousand who gathered at the River Cree Casino in Edmonton’s west end. Many more listened to him at a breakfast meeting at the Yellowhead Inn. Now I’ve been to a few of these stump speeches over the years. The candidate comes into a room and receives polite applause from the men in their blue suits and the women with their well coiffed hair.

But not last Thursday.

This was a crowd of Ralphs, Marthas, and Henrys.

The regular folk!

People who get up in the morning, go out and work hard for their money and come home, eat dinner, go to bed and do it all over again the next day.

There weren’t too many professional lobbyists, backroom boys, or people who live day to day on government grants and handouts at this shindig.

Nope this was the real cross section of Alberta and its population.

And Pierre had them.

He hit all the right marks and ticked all the right boxes to have the partisan crowd cheering from start to finish.

Before coming out to address the throng, chants of “freedom” went through the hall.

And when he stated he would like to defund the CBC… it was met with the loudest cheer of the night.

The crowd was liking what he was pitching!

One almost has to wonder whether it's worth the other leadership hopefuls coming to the province, because Pierre is going to be a tough act to follow.

But one area of concern may be backing up some of the statements.

I'd like to defund the CBC but not in its entirety. I believe the CBC in northern Canada has a very important role in providing news and communications across our northern territories, but I strongly believe its mainstream television and radio operations in southern Canada should be defunded - competing evenly with other media outlets based on their abilities to provide popular, quality programming supported by advertising dollars.

And Albertans and westerners in general have heard the “I’ll make sure the west is treated fairly,” only to be let down by other Conservative messiahs.

And then there’s this truck tax. That’s not a sure thing yet.

CONTINUED The Liberals are denying any such plans, although it has been recommended by the Ministry of the Environment.

Kris Sims from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has condemned the proposal.

The tax bill would range from $1,000 for light-duty pickups to $4,000 for the super-duty trucks that tow horse trailers and construction equipment.

But we must also be mindful of the fact that it was the Conservatives under Stephen Harper who put the first green levy on SUVs back in 2007, when they introduced what was called the “green levy for gas guzzlers,” as part of a plan to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment.

The current tax hits new SUVs that use more than 13 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. For example, the GMC Yukon Denali and the Lincoln Navigator are currently subject to the tax.

“Ottawa hits the Nissan Armada with a $3,000 tax bill,” explains Sims.

Albertans make up about 11 per cent of Canada’s population, yet we buy nearly one-third of the pickup trucks sold in the country.

Now, we know the Liberals have no use for Canadians living west of the Ontario/Manitoba border, but this sort of draconian tax proposal would go beyond the pale.

Environment Minister Stephen Guilbeault vehemently denies it’s being planned.

“This so-called fee on trucks doesn’t exist,” he spouted. He blamed Poilievre of fear-mongering and using it as a red herring to whip up his supporters.

Well, yes, Pierre did jump on it on Thursday at his Edmonton rally and there were “Axe the truck tax” signs in the audience.

But then why not?

“Albertans, more than most Canadians, know better than to trust the Liberals.

Albertan workers and the energy industry have been used, lied to, and then thrown out like dirty dishwater if it moves the goal posts to satisfy Trudeau and his cabal’s “great reset.”

So while Pierre should be careful not to cross the line of complete disinformation, he should still let his supporters know this has been presented to the Liberal hierarchy and it is percolating in the backs of their narrow, Albertan-hating minds.

Poilievre ticks all the right boxes for most hard working Albertans but he has to rise above, to demonstrate his commitment to Canadians.

Canada suffered through one Pierre in the ’70s and ’80s and it was disastrous for Alberta.

We don’t want another.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Drawers to Fill

BY HAZEL ANAKA When a person is unable to do anything too demanding of mind or body, it’s time to sort and organize. When a person has an impending deadline, it’s really time to get into gear.

I did end up buying the antique file cabinet in Airdrie so I had even more reason to tackle the sorting process. The brass label says Library Bureau of Canada so I assume it came from some long-ago library setting. It seems to have been purposely built because its measurements don’t match any current filing cabinets. At 27 inches deep and 21 inches wide, it's considerably larger than a legal cabinet. It’s got nine drawers adorned with brass pulls and label plates. Each drawer must have once had a vertical lengthwise divider because of a visible notch

at the back of each drawer. It’s a classy dark oak piece of furniture with four recessed panels on three sides.

With Hilary’s help we got it into the house. A younger, more impatient Hazel would have forced me to stay up late, push Roy to make my plan happen, do it all right now. I’ve grown more circumspect, patient, and measured in what I expect of myself and others. Positioning the piece is now complete but it remains empty. I need to think and strategize. I don’t want to work twice. I want to store like with like. I want the office layout to work for me today. The detailed floorplan I did three years ago seems so flawed now.

I have more supplies, tools, interests, and projects than ever before. Do I have more than I’ll ever use in my lifetime? Yes. But I’ve begun to purge surplus items either for resale or donation.

Going through an organizational process teaches one several things. There’s something very satisfying about the repetitive, mindless process. There

is shock when you gather all like items in one place and see the full extent of your inventory.

That’s what super-organizer Marie Kondo has been saying for years.

Don’t tackle the job closet by closet, drawer by drawer, room by room.

Gather all the books, clothes, toiletries, kitchen gadgets, craft supplies or whatever category you’re sorting so the whole reality is visible. There is something beautiful when you’ve sorted the things you’re keeping by size, colour, function, or whatever factor makes sense.

I definitely don’t want the large glass beads I acquired through grab bags. I know, as surely as I breathe, that I won’t live long enough to use all the beads I do own and love. That’s good information. It means I won’t buy another bead no matter how beautiful or cheap. I went through the slow process of sorting the beads by colourways. They are a thing of beauty in a more compact, functional storage system.

I’m now sorting through my lace stash.

I’ve got lace ranging in

width from half an inch to seven or eight inches wide. Other pieces are a yard or more in size.

While most of it is white or off-white, I’ve got many coloured ones too.

I’m far more likely to reach for lace to use in my work now that I can clearly see what I have and access it easily.

There’s a hot new organizing show on Netflix featuring a couple of women and highprofile movie star clients.

Much of it is pure escapism TV. Most of us aren’t Chloe Kardashian wondering how to organize her garage so it

accommodates her toddler daughter’s collection of motorized vehicles. The other downfall is the number of organizational products they “need” for every job they tackle. If you need to buy an acrylic box, lazy susan, divider, separator, gizmo to store every item in your house, it seems pointless (and very expensive) to me.

Part of me admires those OCD rooms or closets or pantries. The other part of me finds them cold, clinical, lacking character. I like the warmth of wood, fabric, seagrass. I like saturated

colours. And neutrals. I especially like the challenge of repurposing something.

Having decades-old items of significance or sentiment surrounding me makes me happy. They add character and charm.

They invoke memories and mark passages of my life.

I’d far rather have a library file from the early 1900s than today’s flatpack, assemble-it-yourself laminate-covered particleboard whatever that sags under its own weight, any day of the week. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some drawers to fill, from where I sit.

Mundare has concerns with provincial police proposal

BY JOHN MATHER Mundare Council will write a letter to the Minister of Justice stating concerns they have with the Province moving towards a provincial police force.

In addition, they will submit to the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association a resolution seeking a portion of fine revenue from traffic tickets go back to the issuing municipality for the AUMA’s annual convention later this year.

At the April 5 council meeting Chief Administrative Officer Colin Zyla reported to council he had taken part in a virtual meeting with two councillors recently where the Province’s provincial police proposal was presented..

He said the Province had commissioned a study to look at the transition to a provincial police force although he said no decision had been made yet.

“The way it works currently is the Province has an agreement with the Federal government to provide police services for RCMP for municipalities under a population of 5,000.

The cost is shared between the Province and the Federal government, he explained, although municipalities above the 5,000 population also had to pay a share of the policing

costs.

In 2020, changes were made where all communities had to pay a share of policing costs beginning at 10 per cent and increasing to 30 per cent by 2024.

“Mundare has to pay $31,804 in 2022,” he said.

“And 2023 and 2024 it will be $47,400.”

He said the Province in its presentation had talked about the costs, “but they didn’t say how it would be funded.”

Currently the Province pays $358 million for RCMP, while the Federal government pays $188 million. Alberta spends a further $41 million for sheriffs service.

Zyla stated that meant the total cost currently is $399 million, while the province estimated a provincial police service would cost an estimated $538 to $562 million, with the sheriff’s service amalgamated into the program.

“As we are now paying a portion of the policing costs,” he said. “It stands to reason that our costs will increase. But there’s no talk about that in the study.”

He said another issue that had come up is if they go to a provincial police force, is fine redistribution to communities?

“Mundare used to get a portion of traffic fine revenue if a ticket was issued by the RCMP

within Mundare town limits.

“After a change in 2005, traffic fines were changed to reflect only reimbursement going to municipalities that paid for policing, those with more than 5,000 population.”

He said Mundare was now paying for a portion of policing costs but not getting any fine revenues.

Zyla feels the municipality should get a portion of the fine revenue.

“We do get funding from the peace officer for bylaw offences,” he said.

“But not from the RCMP.” He said when a letter was circulated to municipalities last fall seeking additional funding for fine revenues, Mundare hadn’t taken a stand but with the additional costs of a proposed provincial police force, from a financial point of view it didn’t make sense to support it.

He recommended a letter go to the Minister of Justice saying the Town didn’t support a provincial force until more questions were answered.

“I just don’t know if we’ll get a bigger bang for our buck if we have a provincial police force,” he concluded.

Councillor Eddie Shepel asked what his main take away from the conference was?

“They feel the province would have more control over the policing and they wouldn’t be moving people around as much as currently happens with the RCMP,” Zyla replied. “They added they could hire more people at less costs, but I found that to be disingenuous.”

“My big concern is what does it mean for us?”he stated. “If we’re paying $47,000 for policing next year, but what if it jumps further. If it suddenly goes up to $80,000 or $90,000 what does that do to us?”

Shepel wondered how the town could support it and Zyla agreed.

He said he didn’t know if there would be any additional police presence in the area.

Councillor Irene Talaga stated there were a lot of unanswered questions about the provincial proposal.

She made a motion to

write a letter to the Minister of Justice and send copies of it to municipalities around the area and to include the local MLA Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk.

Zyla also wondered if they should make a

Council approved both motions.

“I’m hoping it will become a one-stop-shop for everyone,” explained Diaz. “Bruderheim needs some life, and everyone needs this.”

Diaz and her husband, Luis, have been busy renovating the little building on Queen Street over the past two months getting ready for opening day. Private rooms inside the building house tanning beds, both stand up and lay down.

“Some people prefer the stand-up bed. It’s a

lot quicker than the lay down one and has a dressing room attached,” said Diaz.

Diaz’s massage therapy service extends to more than just tight muscled adults; she also specializes in pediatric massage in addition to those with special needs.

She said her passion for massage therapy came about when she moved to Alberta from New Brunswick in 2011.

While working under a chiropractor, who was training her in electro therapy and ultrasounds, Diaz said a life changing event in 2013 caused a switch to her career course.

“I had a really bad car accident in 2013 and fractured my back in two places,” she said. Not wanting to take pills, Diaz adopted a more natural approach to managing her pain. “Massage therapy was the only

Lamont air quality at low risk during first quarter

BY JOHN MATHER The Fort Saskatchewan Air Partnership released its first quarterly reports of 2022 showing the air quality throughout the area was in the low risk 89 per cent of the time.

Lamont County and Elk Island recorded the highest rate of low risk readings while Fort Saskatchewan had the lowest.

There were zero hours of high risk readings for the quarter.

Results from the first quarter of 2022 are very similar to the 2021 first quarter results. In 2022, there was only one hour of high AQHI rating for the first quarter. The high risk occurrence in 2021 was due to a wintertime temperature inversion, a weather condition where cold air along with pollutants is trapped near the ground by a layer of warmer air above.

Once she recovered, Diaz knew for sure what she wanted to do with her life.

“I went to school for massage in 2016 and did courses on weekends while still working,” she said. “I graduated with honours and distinction in 2018. After going through the pandemic and giving birth to our daughter last year, I knew I wanted to run my own business.”

Diaz said a schedule of massage therapy is vital for everyone’s good health.

“Muscles deteriorate over time especially when they are not being used,” she said.

“Massage therapy reduces pain, stress and improves circulation energy and alertness.”

Diaz explained that massage therapy hits pressure points that can additionally improve

mental health. For extra deep therapy, she also offers cupping.

“I use silicone cups and they suction to the skin giving a deeper massage. Some people love it but it’s not for everyone,” she said.

“Basically, silicone cups improve circulation, release fascia, and relax the muscles. It is another form of a deeper tissue treatment. The opposite of an actual massage where you push down on the muscle, this pulls the muscle upward.”

Meanwhile, Diaz is looking to the future hoping to eventually fill her clinic with an esthetician, nail tech and hairdresser.

“If we can have tanning, nails, hair, lashes and massages, why go anywhere else?” she said. “It only makes sense.”

Rabbitry is a winning hobby for Andrew grandma

BY JANA SEMENIUK Children in Bruderheim had an egg-stra Easter treat after the town’s Easter Egg Hunt on Apr. 16, by having an opportunity to hold and take pictures with several different pure bred rabbits courtesy of rabbit breeders Sharin Engler of Edmonton and Karen Trudgeon of Andrew.

“We have separate rabbitries but we raise and show them,” said Engler.

Engler, who is also a director on the board of EARS (Edmonton Area Rabbit Society), said that there are 50 different recognized breeds of rabbit and their show world is much like dog and horse shows.

“Our primary goal is that we breed to show them and make a better bunny in the breed,” she said. “We want to make a high-quality rabbit that meets the standard.

What doesn’t meet our standard to continue in the breeding program we sell as pets.” Engler’s rabbitry facebook page stipulates, however, that bunnies are not sold at Easter.

In her rabbitry, Enlger has different breeds including the Holland Lop, Mini Lop, Netherland Dwarf, and the Lionhead rabbit. As far as breeding goes, Engler said the myth about rabbits reproducing at warp speed is not altogether true.

“Especially when you are trying to work with quality purebreds. It does happen quickly, but not all the time,” she said, adding that the gestation period for a rabbit is 28 -32 days. “They can also get pregnant five minutes after giving birth and it has happened.”

When producing a quality rabbit, Engler said it’s far more important that the males, known as bucks, are of high quality than the females, known as does.

The baby rabbits are known as Kits.

Additionally, Engler said rabbits have a lengthy lifespan.

“Rabbits can live eight to 10 years and I’ve seen some live 16 years,” she said.

Like all animals, Engler said rabbits can

be prone to disease particularly in their teeth.

“They can get Malocclusion of their teeth which grow continually, so if they are not aligned properly, they will continue to grow and get gnarly. That is a genetic defect that we do not breed for,” she said.

Meanwhile, Karen Trudgeon of Andrew said she found her passion for rabbits after first babysitting her daughter’s new pet 10 years ago.

“My daughter was 15 and brought home a pet rabbit. I didn’t think I would like rabbits. I wasn’t raised around them,” she said. “But after I babysat it over a weekend, I just fell in love with it.”

Upon researching her daughters’ new pet, who happened to be a

Netherland dwarf rabbit, Trudgeon met Engler, at a Pet Expo.

“I saw her display and got some information. I called her up because I wanted to come and look at rabbits and possibly get a pet,” said Trudgeon.

Trudgeon and Engler soon became close friends and Engler introduced Trudgeon to the world of show rabbits.

“Sharin educated me and explained the breeds and showed me this standard of perfection of what you need to look for to raise proper rabbits,” said Trudgeon. “I was retiring from training horses and thought these (rabbits) are perfect because I can carry them around and they won’t hurt me.”

numerous ribbons for her prized rabbits.

Although she loves them all, Trudgeon said she does have a favourite breed.

“My ultimate favourite is the Holland Lop. Each one has got such a different personality and no two are ever the same,” she said.

Trudgeon estimates she has between 60 and 70 rabbits in her rabbitry, and although her rabbits are beautiful to look at, Trudgeon said some of them are bred for a purpose beyond winning a ribbon.

“One of the breeds I raise are English Angoras whose coat is used for spinning wool,” she said.

Trudgeon added that they are like a sheep where they can be shaved to harvest the wool and it will continue to grow back.

Today, Trudgeon has found even more joy in her rabbitry by including her 12-year-old granddaughter Sheyanne in the rewarding hobby.

“It’s pretty fun,” said Sheyanne smiling.

The duo has been working together with the rabbits since last fall.

Provincial grant helps Fort Food Bank purchase larger facility

BY JOHN MATHER Fort Saskatchewan Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk joined Minister of Culture and Status of Women Ron Orr Apr. 22 to present a $690,550 cheque to assist the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank purchase a new, much larger facility to fulfill the community’s needs.

The Food Bank had for years operated out of a building located near the downtown with a very small square footage.

The Food Gatherers Society moved to a new 16,000 square foot facility in the Fort’s light industrial area last June.

After moving into the new facility the food bank unveiled a new brand complete with a new website.

Armstrong Homeniuk presented the cheque to food bank executive

director Kassandra Gartner.

“There have been so many challenges in the past two years,” she told the assembled crowd.

“Having a new food bank building that can better service the needs of those who use the food bank was definitely something that was needed.”

She said she had toured the new facility and was impressed by its potential.

“It’s great news for the thousands of people the food bank serves and further adds to the health and cohesiveness of the community as well.”

“The work that will be done here is of the utmost importance.”

The grant came through the province’s Community Facility Enhancement Program.

In addition to the

grant, the food bank raised more than $1.4 million and was able to purchase the building on Mar. 1 of this year.

The board still has to meet a further fundraising goal of $1.6 million.

“A modern, larger facility was crucial to the Food Bank continuing to support the growing need within our community,” said Gartner.

“Developing the plan to acquire a new building, navigating the major process to acquire a commercial property, and now seeing the building being purchased is very rewarding.”

She pointed out the need for the food bank has continually increased stating the year to date hamper collection has increased 24 per cent compared to 2021.

Easter Egg Hunt brings people out of their shells

BY JANA SEMENIUK An Easter Egg Hunt, held in Bruderheim on Apr. 16, had children of all ages scrambling to find easter eggs hidden around the town’s core using a list of clues stating the town building or landmark they were hidden at.

Chilly temperatures hovering at 0c did not dampen spirits of the more than 60 children who participated with their families surprising Bruderheim AG Society Treasurer Sherry Cote.

“It was cold and a bit snowy, so I wasn’t sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised (at the turnout),” she said.

While the thrill of finding each egg was evident from the sight of children and parents running

from point to point, Cote said the game accomplished another goal; teaching everyone about their town.

“It’s amazing how many kids don’t know where the town office is, or where Queen’s Park is,” said Cote.

While Cote came up with the idea for the list of clues, she got the initial idea for an Easter Egg Hunt from a local event a few years ago.

“A few years ago, I helped the Bruderheim Lioness Club with their Easter Egg Hunt. There were children lined up and I thought we were on to something. The next year it was cold, so it was cancelled and then the next year covid happened. So, this year we thought why not try it?”

she said.

In addition to local families, Cote said people came from Lamont and Fort Saskatchewan prompting her to revise the plan for the future.

“Our intent was for people to get to know the town and the things that are in it. I didn’t realize people would be coming from out of town so I think we may include a map in the future,” she said.

The event also encompassed a rabbit-holding opportunity at Walker School with rabbits from two local breeders as well as a draw for a gift basket containing toys and Easter treats valued at $80 won by the McDonald family of Lamont.

EIPS changes course on board meetings online

BY JANA SEMENIUK Elk Island Public Schools has reversed a decision on their in-person only board meetings to now include a livestream viewing option on YouTube as they did during the lockdowns over the past two years.

The decision announcing a return to online, in conjunction with an inperson option, was made on their website after announcing last month that their meetings would be in-person only once the province moved into phase two of lifting

public health measures.

“The Board discussed the matter further last week and decided that because having the meetings online resulted in increased community uptake in the meetings, they would again be broadcast,” said EIPS Communications Director Laura McNabb by email. McNabb further stated she was not aware of any requests from the community to reinstate their online version.

An email to parents Apr. 18 gave an outline of the upcoming meeting

agenda which will include reviewing administrative fees for the coming school year in addition to trustee and board chair reports. A complete comprehensive board package, detailing the agenda, is available on their website under the Trustee tab.

The next meeting, Apr. 21 at 10 a.m., will be broadcast on the EIPS YouTube channel as well as accommodate those wishing to join in-person at the EIPS Central Administration Building in Sherwood Park.

Two dozen bison transferred from EINP to Indigenous lands KERRY ANDERSON Parks Canada has transferred more bison from Elk Island National Park (EINP) to their original homelands, two different First Nations groups in Alberta.

Twenty wood bison went to Metis Crossing and four went to augmenting an existing herd at Beaver Lake Cree Nation, said EINP Superintendent Dale Kirkland.

The bison are part of an education and experience program on the Metis Nation in conjunction with EINP. “This is a historic moment for Metis citi-

zens in Alberta,” said President of Metis Nation of Alberta Audrey Poitras.

“Although native to the Metis Crossing area, wild bison or ‘bufloo’ in Michif, were driven to near extinction by settlers in the 19th Century, forcing Metis bison hunts to halt.”

He added that this is an important part of reconciliation, and that EINP has transferred 212 bison to their traditional homelands on nine Indigenous communities in both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

EINP is Canada’s cornerstone of bison conser-

vation, added Supervisor Kirkland. “We’re working with a number of other Indigenous communities and planning ahead for transfers to occur in 2023.”

According to Kirkland, EINP has 275 wood bison and 616 plains bison at EINP which is considered to be a healthy population. An aerial survey is conducted every year to count the animals.

Plains bison are kept in the north portion of EINP, while the wood bison are separated in the south as they are two distinct sub species.

He said many of the new rules being suggested on internet regulation were nothing more than censorship and his government wouldn’t allow them to proceed.

“We’ll open up free speech on the internet,” he said. “We want to give people back control of their lives.”
