Mundare Fire Department celebrates 100 years of service Michelle Pinon Editor

While there was plenty of pomp and pageantry, there was also lots of funny and impromptu speeches from dignitaries and attendees during the Mundare Fire Department’s 100th anniversary gala on Saturday, April 22. A real honour for present and past members as well as guests on hand for the celebration was to have Lt. Governor of Alberta Lois Mitchell in attendance. “It’s my great pleasure to be here,” stated Mitchell, who dispensed with the usual protocol, and thanks former Premier Ed Stelmach and his wife Marie for their service to the community and people of Alberta. “I want to tell you all I have heroes in my life,” which includes people in the fire department as well as peole who run for public office. On her way down to Mundare Mitchell said she was thinking about the trip she made to Japan when they were in cabinet together. “I am honoured to join you in celebrating 100 years,” noted Mitchell, as she thanked past and present members for their bravery, self sacrifice, and commitment to service which has left a true legacy in the Mundare area. “It takes a very special person to be a firefighter whether it be fulltime or on a volunteer basis.” She com-

mended the past and present members for being there for people during their worst hour of need and for keeping the town and rural areas safe places to live. Mundare Fire Chief Glenda Dales thanked the Lt. Governor of Alberta, and presented her with her own special pink fire hat on behalf of the department. Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs also thanked the firefighters for their self sacrifice. She call firefighters a “different breed” and set apart as they help sustain their community. She also thanked the firefighters families before presenting Dales with a certificate. Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood said 100 years of service is a real testiment to the longstanding families and communities in the district who also helped build the province. “As a grandchild of Ukrainian immigrants my heart goes out to those who couldn’t be with us, and to the brothers and sisters who serve. Mundare Mayor Charlie Gargus said the support of town council is critical to the fire department’s success, and said they really are quite fortunate because many of the members on the department have served more than 20 years. Lamont County Reeve Wayne Woldanski touched on the county’s

association with the Town of Mundare back in 1967 when John Batiuk was the Reeve of Lamont County and Peter Polischuk was the Mayor of Mundare. “That was the start of rural firefighting. We’ve had a strong partnership for the last 50 years,” and cited the resigning of regional fire agreement with Mundare and fellow members as testament to that. Reeve Woldanski also acknowledged past and present members of the department, and Glenda Dales and her crew for making it one of the best fire departments in the county. In recent years, Lamont County has invested over $3.5 million in the regional fire service, and is currently in the process of finishing the regional fire centre in Chipman that will offer training to local firefighters as well as other municipalities and industry in the near future. Former Mundare Mayor Peter Polischuk regaled the audience with a few stories, while the crowd waited for the banquet to begin. His candour and comedic flair won the audience over as they stood to their feet following his off the cuff remarks and heartfelt thanks to members. Vegreville, Lamont, and Chipman Fire Chiefs also offered congratulations to the Mundare Fire Department. Alberta’s Fire Commissioner Ross

McCarty also received an exemplary service medal to go along with the certificate. Bennett told the crowd about the exemplary service medal that was created to honour firefighters with 20 or more years of service. “I’m sure we can all agree firefighting is a young men’s sport,” said Bennett, who called it rare and almost unheard of the have veterans of a fire department between 30 and 40 years, and personally congratulated Dale McCarty on his achievement. Soon after the Lt. Gov. presented McCarty with his medal and certificate for his 40 years of exemplary service. Fire Chief Glenda Dales also received a standing ovation for her dedication and organization of the historic event.

People pull together for local families Michelle Pinon Editor

It was 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 15 when the Lamont Fire Department was called to 14 Duke Drive. Lt. Andrew McDonald was one of the responders on scene. “It was the first time I’ve ever been to a call with someone I know. The garage at the home of Steve and Crystal Hanson was on fire, and their 12-year-

old son Cole was seriously burned. Even though he did not know how seriously Cole was burned, by the time the fire was put out two-and-a-half hours later, the family’s garage and trailer were destroyed, and their neighbours garage was also damaged. “It was difficult fighting the fire knowing what had happened to Sandy’s (Andrew’s eldest son) friend, and I was at a

standstill trying to figure out what more I could do after.” The following morning he decided to auction off one of his favourite paintings on Facebook in order to donate money to the family as he knew it would help with their expenses while they are in the city and not working to take care of their son in the hospital. At the end of Friday, that painting sold for $650. Other neighbours and

residents have been donating what they can to the family this past week, and a couple of community groups have stepped forward to offer financial assistance to the family. In addition a GoFundMe page titled “Coming Together For Cole” was set up, and as of Monday afternoon a total of $3,260 had been raised for Cole and his family. A Trust Fund account was also set up through the Alberta Treasury Branch in Lamont, and donations can be made at that branch or any other ATB branch or agency in Alberta. One hundred per cent of those funds will go towards the family. As well, a separate trust fund has also been set up for Misti Sutton whose husband was tragically killed in Chipman a few weeks earlier.

Weather conditions wreak havoc on county gravel roads Michelle Pinon Editor

Two recent heavy snowfalls in Lamont County are testing public works crews to the limit. Lamont County Roads Maintenance Supervisor Gerald Thorowsky told The Lamont Leader that “roads right now are in terrible to poor condition,” especially in the east end of the municipality.

Between eight and twelve inches of snow were reported in the Chipman, Mundare, and Andrew areas even before the huge deluge of snow this past weekend. Since early last week graders have been scraping as much snow as possible off the roads in the early morning hours in an effort to try and save as many of them as possible. As of late Friday afternoon a total

of three roads were “totally impassable” and had to be closed, with 11 more roads being open to local traffic only. More than a dozen wash outs were reported, and one road even had a hole three feet in diameter that had to be filled and packed with gravel. “It seems like we are doomed one way or another.” He said many judgement calls have had to be made as quickly as possible as crews worked to clear roads. The public works department has also had over 20 calls for service from residents to unplug culverts. “This is the worse spring I’ve ever had,” said Thorowsky, who has been working with Lamont County for more than 30 years, 24 of them in his role as roads main-

With more snow and rain in the forecast, it doesn’t look like the situation will improve in the near future, and all crews and residents can do is wait it out.

Opinion You can never be too careful... A couple of weeks ago I went to my Facebook Home Page and found the following advice: Dear Michelle, We want to stop the spread of false news on Facebook. Learn more about. As we work to limit the spread, here are some tips on what to look out for: *Be skeptical of headlines. False news stories often have catchy headlines in all caps with exclamation points. If shocking claims in the headline sound unbelievable, they probably are. *Look closely at the URL. A phony or look-alike URL may be a warning sign of false news. Many false news sites mimic authentic news sources by making small changes to the URL. You can go to the site to compare the URL to established sources. *Investigate the source. Ensure that the story is written by a source that you trust with a reputation for accuracy. If the story comes from an unfamiliar organization, check their “About” section to learn more. *Watch for unusual formatting. Many false news sites have misspellings or awkward layouts. Read carefully if you see these signs. *Consider the photos. False news stories often contain manipulated images or videos. Sometimes the photo may be authentic, but taken out of context. You can search for the photo or image to verify where it came from. *Inspect the dates. False news stories may contain timelines that make no sense, or event dates that have been altered. *Check the evidence. Check the author’s sources to confirm that they are accurate. Lack of evidence or reliance on unnamed experts may indicate a false news story. *Look at other reports. If no other news source is reporting the same story, it may indicate that the story is false. If the story is reported by multiple sources you trust, it’s more likely to be true. *Is the story a joke? Sometimes false news stories can be hard to distinguish from humor or satire. Check whether the source is known for parody, and whether the story’s details and tone suggest it may be just for fun. *Some stories are intentionally false. Think critically about the stories you read, and only share news that you know to be credible. It never hurts to be cautious, and critical because once something is out there for the world to read there’s no turning back.

Letter: Landfill commission chair calls publication notice ‘unfair smear’ Dear Editor, Re: Councillors’ Corner, April 18, 2017 I refer to the notices published in the Lamont Leader on April 18, 2017, and specifically the “Motions Arising from In Camera”. The motion describes, without context, that the Lamont County Council directed its administration arrange a meeting “to discuss County Council concerns with the administration and

operation” of the St. Michael Landfill, operated by the St. Michael Regional Solid Waste Commission, for which I am Chair of the Board. The publication of the notice without context is an unfair smear on our hard-working administrator and employees. Your readers ought to understand that the St. Michael Landfill is an award-winning operation, and is continually recognized as a model

landfill. It received the Collection Site Award of Excellence in 2015. Landfills are highly regulated, and we take pride in our operation and in our administration. Running a regional services commission involves compromise for all members, and the Commission does its best to take into consideration the views from all of its members. If any member of the Commission has a spe-

cific concern with an aspect of the operation or administration, it is incumbent on that member to be specific so that there is no misunderstanding about the excellent operation the Commission has been running since 2012. Sincerely, Frank Rosypal, Chairman ST. MICHAEL REGIONAL SOLID WASTE COMMISSION

Anglin accuses Wildrose Party Leader Brian Jean of usurping authority Dear Editor, The Progressive Conservative Party (PC) and the Wildrose Party (WRP) are engaged in talks to unite conservatives into one political entity. Presumably the proposed talks are based upon the commonly held belief that all conservatives conform to the same universal principles and values. In reality, the contrast of integrity, values and behaviour between the two political parties is starkly dissimilar. Jason Kenney announced his intention to run for the leadership of the PC Party on an agenda to pursue unity. Agree with him or disagree with him, Kenney debated this agenda during the PC leadership campaign and when the votes were tallied, the PC membership spoke. They gave Kenney a democratic mandate to pursue

an agenda of unification. In contrast, Brian Jean campaigned for the Wildrose leadership and not once did he inform the WRP membership that if he were elected, he would seek to change the party name, or possibly disband the party by entering into an agreement with the PC Party to unify. However, eight months after he was elected, Jean registered a non-profit society called the “Conservative Party of Alberta Association,” to pursue his agenda. He did this in secret! Currently the WRP executive is rapidly holding nomination races for existing MLAs on the premise that they will not have to participate in a democratic nomination process if and when a new unity party is formed. Apparently, the membership of the new party

will have no say in this matter. In a couple of recent bizarre decisions the WRP executive council has revoked an individual’s WRP membership for, “Intending to attempt” to seek a PC party nomination, while actively engaged in unity talks to merge with the PCs. They have also approved Jean’s appointment of Ontario resident, Arthur Hamilton, to represent the WRP members in unity talks. “Intending to attempt” is an odd if not incoherent allegation to deny membership to anyone. However, the appointment of Hamilton to represent the membership is an unconscionable violation of the WRP constitution. The WRP constitution is incisively explicit. Only the WRP membership can authorize or appoint its representative. Jean and the WRP executive have the authority to conduct

normal day-to-day business between AGMs. They cannot engage in, or appoint anyone to represent the membership in unity or merger talks before first obtaining the consent of the WRP membership. What Jean and the WRP executive are doing is usurping authority that was never granted. The proposition to unite conservatives is honourable and possibly a worthwhile venture. To claim that both parties in these negotiations share the same core values is inaccurate if one considers the actions of both entities. One participant and entity has shown respect for the democratic process and has conducted its actions accordingly. The other is Brian Jean and the Wildrose executive. Joe Anglin Rimbey, AB

Opinion Why computer climate models are not trustworthy Not long ago, I met a woman who said that she was absolutely terrified of global warming. I asked if she knew how much warming had actually occurred in, say, the last 140-150 years. She didn’t, but said she was pretty sure it was a lot. When I told her that actual warming was less than a single degree Celsius (0.08o) during that time, she seemed relieved, then openly wondered how such a small amount over such a long period could lead to excessive carbon taxes and politicians spending billions on electrical subsidies. Good question, but an even better question is why politicians have spent these billions even though the reliability of climate models has never been demonstrably proven. Climate scientist and professor Judith Curry is the former chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology. She is the author of 180+ scientific papers on climate. Curry says that alarmist fears are based on computer models rather than observable science. She says:

“[The earth] is clearly warming, and it’s been warming overall for several hundred years, [yet] the key question is how much of the recent warming—say for the last fifty years—has been caused by humans, and my interpretation of the evidence is that we really can’t tell. And I don’t see a clear signal that it is being caused by humans, predominantly.” Myron Ebell was the academic chosen by President Donald Trump to transition the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Ebell points out that “the official scientific view that promotes global warming alarmism is really not based on science or on data. It’s based on computer modelling.” Ebell says: “The problem with computer models is that… they can’t forecast the future. They cannot predict what the temperature is going to be in ten years, fifty years, or a hundred years.” Dr. John Christy is professor of atmospheric science at the University of Alabama, and has served in many capacities as a climate scientist, including a lead author on the U.N.’s IPCC (Climate Change Panel). Christy and his col-

league, Dr. Roy Spencer, received NASA’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal for their global temperature monitoring work with satellites. Testifying before a Congressional Committee, Christy demonstrated how each of 102 U.N. IPCC climate models overestimated global warming. He said: “The [climate] models failed the simplest of validation tests; they can’t even

reproduce what has already happened…. On average, the warming rate of the atmosphere in these models is three times reality. As a consequence, our science has not established the causal link between CO2 emissions and what the climate is actually doing.” Highly respected Princeton physicist Freeman Dyson agrees. Dyson says it makes little sense to trust the computer

models because they’re “full of fudge factors.” He says they’ve proven themselves unreliable and wrong, noting that global temperatures were absolutely flat during the early 21st century, even though human activity poured record amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere during that time. From Where I Sit: Finish First

By Hazel Anaka In February my mom, Roy, and I collected on a Christmas present from Hilary. She gave each of us a ticket to the Garth Brooks world tour concert in Edmonton. I don’t think anyone expected he’d end up selling more than 143,000 tickets in nine shows but that’s what happened. Ours was for the seven o’clock show on Saturday night We were there in 1996 when Brooks last came to Edmonton and we loved him. Hilary saw him last year in Saskatoon. Much has been written about his talent, his showmanship, his nice-guy-downhome persona. The fact that Hilary was able to secure four Loge seats at the spectacular Rogers Place made this event special. These seats are mid-bowl and feature a table and four barstool seats. No aisle, no small-bladder people squeezing back and forth because they’ve been drinking fifteen-dollar drinks all night. Great sightlines, comfy setting, no annoying people. Because my mom is eighty-something and I was still gimpy because of my fall, the plan was to drop us off as close to

the door as possible. The traffic was snarled and one street was closed so we bailed out when we could so Roy and Hilary could park. The sidewalk was jammed—-ten or twelve people wide in two directions from the door and around the corner—-with chilly, confused concertgoers. You’ve gotta wonder about men in shirts and women in short, sleeveless dresses wearing open-toed shoes in

February in Edmonton. Hot stuff, I guess. The issue, it seemed was moving nearly 20,000 people from the 3 PM show out so the next 20,000 could get in and through security for the 7 PM show. We didn’t see any anger. Near us, some guys broke into song. Unfortunately, Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog isn’t a Garth number. They seamlessly transitioned into Friends in Low Places and made us smile

at the plucky Canadian spirit and loyal country fan base. The show started about an hour late with two warm-up acts. When Garth burst onto the stage, he said he’d be ‘playing cowboy songs, drinking songs, and the night would be one of oldies.’ He had us eating out of his hands. Some people stood through the entire night. We all cheered and sang along whether he prompted us

or not. He teased us, he enabled us, he praised, and challenged us. And the crowd lapped it up. It was a feel-good night in a time of too many worries for too many people. After the obligatory standing O, Garth returned alone with his guitar and performed another twenty or more minutes. It felt natural, comfortable, intimate despite our number. It was so the opposite

when years ago we saw Dwight Yoakum perform. He appeared drunk, low energy, inconvenienced to be here. But of course, stars behaving badly is not new. So chock this one up as a night of memories shared by three generations and facilitated by a generous daughter/ granddaughter. It’s also nice to know that good guys can finish first, from where I sit.

Andrew School and Fire Brigade raise funds for AED Michelle Pinon Editor

Just like perogies and sausage, the Andrew Fire Brigade and Andrew School make a dynamic combination, recently teaming up to raise funds for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that will be housed in the school. Andrew Fire Brigade member Martin Stewart said the fundraiser was a good way to involve the entire community in the project. A total of 87 boxes of perogies and sausage were sold for a profit of $600. The Andrew Fire Brigade chipped in $1,770 to reach the overall goal. Andrew School Principal TJ Kennerd said the idea of housing an AED in the school

came from school secretary Marie Andruchow, and it didn’t take long to get staff, students, parents and community members on board.

Kennerd said an AED is a great safety feature to have at the school in the event it is needed by a student, staff member or visitor. The AED is rela-

tively easy to operate, and Kennerd said instructions are given visually and verbally from the machine, which makes it easy, accessible

and efficient for anyone to use. The Andrew Fire Brigade is the fundraising arm of the fire department, and used

proceeds from previous fundraisers to support the project. Every Canada Day members host a pancake breakfast, celebration.

Several members of the Andrew Fire Brigade were on hand to present a $1,770 cheque to Andrew School Principal TJ Kennerd that went towards the purchase of an Automated External Defibrillator. Members of the school community, and community at large, also pitched in $600 through the sale of perogies and sausage. Liberals plan to ‘tax on tax’ a direct contradiction: promised revenue neutral carbon tax for provinces SUBMITTED ARTICLE The Federal Liberals stand to make almost $280 million in revenues from provincial carbon taxes in Alberta and British Columbia over the next two years, according to a new report released from the Library of Parliament. Both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Environment Minister have claimed over and over again that their federally imposed carbon tax scheme would be revenue neutral for Ottawa,” said Shannon Stubbs, Member of Parliament for Lakeland and Deputy Critic for Natural Resources. “The Liberals have insisted they would not collect

Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs revenues from any provinces, but this report proves the complete opposite. How are Canadians supposed to believe anything this Prime Minister says?” said MP Stubbs. The revenues will come from a CRA requirement, meaning

provincial governments will have to apply 5 per cent GST on top of the carbon tax in their jurisdictions. “Canadians are willing to pay their fair share of taxes, but they are being tricked by the Liberals into paying even more. The Liberals have insisted they are standing up for middle class Canadians. But, a carbon tax directly affects the most vulnerable Canadians, making everything from the gas in their cars to the groceries on their table more expensive. Now, the Liberals are mandating a tax on a tax, which will force businesses to pass on even more costs to

every day families trying to make ends meet,” said Stubbs. Currently, Alberta and British Columbia have implemented taxes on greenhouse gas emissions. In Alberta, the Liberals could collect up to $65 million during 2017-2018, and up to $85 million in 2018-2019. If the rate was to increase to $50 per tonne in 20182019, the amount of GST revenue could grow to $140 million in Alberta alone. “This shameless tax grab is unfair to Canadians and it’s not what the Prime Minister promised them. My colleague Mark Warawa, Member of Parliament

for Langley— Aldergrove, has tabled a bill that will seek to amend the Excise Tax Act to exclude the collection of GST/HST on provincial carbon pricing systems. I will be working

alongside my Conservative colleagues to ensure this bill is debated and continue to stand up for Canadians against this shameless tax on a tax.”

PCN ‘Get Out, Get Active’ Challenge ready for action SUBMITTED ARTICLE Residents of Fort Saskatchewan, Lamont, Gibbons, Redwater and surrounding area are being asked to step up their physical activity this spring by joining the 4th annual Get Out, Get Active (GOGA) Challenge from April 24 to June 4. Alberta Heartland Primary Care Network is one of 21 Primary Care Networks across the province participating in this year’s challenge of returning to life. The challenge addresses a physical activity crisis in Alberta and across Canada. Less than 5% of children and 15% of adults are meeting the recommendations in Canada’s Physical Activity Guidelines. GOGA is a free, six week online program for all ages which keeps

track of participants physical activities (walking, running, swimming, basketball, cycling, gardening etc.), converts them into steps, which then “virtually” takes them on a health journey. As you enter your activity each week, you will get to see your GOGA character transform from a zombie to a superhero! Participants are encouraged to track and log their activity each day. They can monitor their progress online to see how far they have gone on their virtual health journey, as well as to see how their overall team is doing. Over the six weeks, a GOGA character transforms from sick to healthy as more physical activity is done. During the challenge, a pedometer or other step tracking device can be used to track physical

Zabrick finds success on and off the badminton court Michelle Pinon Editor

The fourth time did not prove to be the charm for Caelan Zabrick, but for the Grade 11 Andrew School student settling for silver at the Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) Senior High Badminton League Championship in Vegreville last Thursday was alright considering he lost the final set to his

cousin Brandon Lamash. He admits it was different having to playoff against his cousin in the championship, but neat in that both players will be able to go to zones on April 26 in Lac La Biche. “I had a great competition,” said Caelan, despite the fact he had limited practice time. He did feel it in his muscles the following day as he played between six and seven sets altogether

with many of the matches stretching the full three games. Caelan says he really loves playing singles badminton, and even considered playing at the club level at one time, but hockey became more of a passion. Caelan plays Midget AA with the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers and has his

sights set on playing at the Junior B level. He has had several invites for try outs, and the defenseman is really hoping to make a spot on the Melville Millionaires of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. As far as future career, Caelan said he plans to attend NAIT to become a millwright.

LHS senior badminton teams take home medals Michelle Pinon Editor

A total of 22 high school students from Lamont participated in the annual Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) league badminton championships this past week in Vegreville. The student athletes competed well, and three teams will be advancing to zones on Wednesday, April 26 in Lac La Biche. The boys doubles team of Carson Schickerowsky and Dylan Zacharko, the girls doubles team of Alexis Miedema and Kaylee Kloster as well as the mixed doubles team of Jacques Pinon and Ariana Shields all earned silver medals.

There were also three teams who earned bronze medals. Those include: boys doubles Josh Zwarich and Jayde McGill; mixed doubles Evan Shields and Emily Enns; and girls doubles Alexia Robillard and Thea Wallace. Cory Kokotailo, Director of Athletics & Physical Education, said, “We were happy to have students like Ariana Shields and Jacques Pinon who joined us as Grade 12 students, and have represented our school great.” Kokotailo also pointed out that 17 of the 22 players that he had on the team this year were Grade 10 students.

Jacques Pinon and Ariana Shields brought home a silver medal in mixed doubles. ”That speaks volumes for the program and the fantastic growth it has seen.” He plans to increase the number of players on the high school roster to 48 in two years time. He went on to say that having teachers Ms. Sorotsky and Mr. Wong as coaches “greatly improved the skills set of these players, and turned them into contenders,” and that will definitely bode well for next year’s team.

Carson Schickerowsky and Dylan Zacharko took silver in boys doubles.
