Old fashioned fun at 99th Annual Lougheed Fair

This past weekend the Lougheed Agricultural Society celebrated the 99th annual Lougheed Fair. This one-day event features a fair book with dozens of categories that hearken back to its early roots, but remain popular today, as bakers, canners, gardeners, photographers, and craftsmen enter to compete against one another. Add a parade, horse show, cattle show, and lots of other activities, and you have a legacy event to really be proud of. See more photos Pages 11 & 13.

It seems you never lose the fun of playing in the mud, even when your toys are fullsized vehicles. There was plenty of good “clean” fun in Forestburg this past weekend with two days of mud racing, and rave reviews for the new pretzel-track racing. See more photos Pages 12 & 16.

Harrowing week with happy ending as family pet found safe Leslie Cholowsky Editor

What started as a multi-family get together on Saturday, June 23, turned into a harrowing experience for the Brandon and Sarah Heck family after their not-quite-one-year-old pup Harlow, a miniature Aussie-doodle, went missing.

Sarah says the family was camping at Mat and Bridgette Ponto’s home west of Forestburg with their two children and pup over the weekend.

After the first day, Harlow was great off-leash, she says, although she kept her new purple harness on. “She was having so much fun, it went from her best day to worst day.”

Later Saturday evening, the group was planning to shoot some fireworks. “I knew there were going to be fireworks. Harlow has heard fireworks in Camrose, and has never been afraid of thunderstorms. As a precaution, I held her in my arms, and I had hold of her harness.”

Heck says she was surprised when the first fireworks came out and Harlow panicked and bolted from her lap.

“I tried to chase her but I couldn’t see her and it was dark.”

The families searched all that night for the pup, driving up and down the highway.

Heck says, “I’ve learned since that dogs go into shock and just run blindly. She could have been miles away in any direction.”

She says the whole family was pretty distraught. “We ended up staying in Forestburg for the next five days, searching day and night, from about 5:45 in the morning to 11 at night.”

Heck says she was willing to try anything that might lead them to Harlow, reaching out to animal communicators and even psychics. “None of them were right about where she was, but it still gave us hope.”

She says she put well over 1,000 km on her vehicle, and drove every rural road and gravel

She says it was hard not to lose hope as the days went on, but says that Ponto and her husband helped her keep her optimism up.

“I was amazed by the community support. Even some of my coworkers from Camrose came out to help search. People were also leaving food and water out in case she came by.”

The Hecks even reached out to High Drive K-9 Service out of Camrose, and says they came out one entire evening and searched with a heat sensitive camera for hours.

Chad Hanlon, the operator, searched in a two kilometre radius of the Ponto residence in every direction, staying out until the sun came up.

“He said when I’d first called him that it was useless to use tracking dogs after 24-hours because the scent would be lost.

“But he said if we got

any sightings, to call him immediately and he would come out with his dogs.”

Sarah says that at some point someone told her, “You have to set an end date when you are going to stop searching.”

So after five days, on Thursday, the family returned home, but she says she still remained optimistic. “My daughter was saying things like, ‘When Harlow gets home..’ and we just kept hoping.”

She says the next Saturday her son and husband went to Monster Jam, while she and her daughter decided to stay home and start making ‘Missing Dog’ posters.

“Around 8:45 Tim Johnsey spotted a dog wearing a purple harness while he was out driving his motorbike.”

She says the Johnsey and the Dietz families didn’t just call in the sighting, they returned to the area and started searching.

“They waited for us on the highway for over an hour, searching until we got there.”

She says the other family also brought their dog, and when they put the dog down, Harlow eventually came up to investigate. “They scooped her up.”

Heck says Harlow was stinky and dirty, and smelled awful, but was full of energy. “She obviously had been eating, she didn’t lose any weight at all.”

When she and her daughter returned home with Harlow, the pup ran to her favourite toy like nothing had happened.

The Hecks had their vet check out the dog, and found her in remarkable health. A little preventative deworming, and a tick check was in order, but overall, she was in good health. “She’s a resilient puppy.”

Heck says she just can’t say enough about all the wonderful support coming from the Flagstaff County and Forestburg community. She says she and the family are very grateful and thankful for everyone who helped find their pup.

The dog park recently received an upgrade.

Both access points have been paved for easier snow removal in the winter. It's fantastic to have a dog park in Sedgewick that's accessible yearround.

I remember some issues last winter with closing the gates due to the high and frozen snow. This will eliminate that problem.

If you don't know, Sedgewick Dog Park is located behind the ball di-

amonds at the Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre.

The 99th edition of the Lougheed Fair was on Saturday. It included a parade, bench exhibits, car show, cattle, horses, and a magic show.

Mark your calendar for the 100th anniversary next year. Planning will start in September and they are looking for volunteers. Contact Darlene Albrecht if you'd like to lend a hand for a couple hours.

Alyssa Mossestad from Sedgewick recently had

an adventure.

Lyssa was asked back in May to join the Rocky Mountain Pipe Band.

They are one of two grade one pipe bands in Alberta.

Bands are graded one to five, with one being the most advanced and playing the most intricate tunes compared to grade five.

After learning three different three- to sevenminute sets in six weeks, Lyssa competed with them in Sherwood Park.

As an aside, the Battle

River Pipes and Drums group is now officially a grade-five band after Sherwood Park.

Lyssa’s group actually came in second at Sherwood Park.

The Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville, Ontario is one of the biggest highland games outside of Scotland. The best of the best go to compete there before the World's in Scotland every year.

some of their best plays, she said. They competed against six other gradetwo bands from both Canada and the US. There were 30 bands competing in all five grades and over 900 pipers and drummers for the mass band play at the end of the day.

She says the plan for the Rocky Mountain Pipe Band is to go to Scotland in 2023.

A federal dental care program is nothing to smile about [TROY MEDIA] One of the big-ticket items in the most recent federal budget was the new NDP-approved dental care program. Since oral health falls under provincial jurisdiction, the announcement raises several questions as to the application of this program across the country.

Expanding access to dental care is a goal we can all get behind, especially when we consider that nearly 20 per cent of Canadians see cost as a barrier in this area. But the situation will not improve if the funds are used inefficiently. Certain guidelines, if followed, would increase the chances of achieving the best possible outcome.

First, for the sake of the health of our public finances, if the federal government is to introduce a permanent spending program like this, it must also cut its expenditures elsewhere by at least an equivalent amount. Failing to consider the extra strain such a program will impose on already heavily taxed Canadian families is irresponsible.

Moreover, the federal government must let the provinces organize the delivery of dental care and the distribution of funds. Not only is health care a provincial responsibility, but the provinces are in the best position to answer the needs of their population and adjust the program as those needs change over time. In other words, the dental care program must not take away the provinces’ ability to innovate in elaborating their public policies just because the financing comes from the federal government.

And speaking of elaboration, the dental care program should be modelled after Quebec’s current drug insurance plan. Specifically, this means having the government cover the cost, or part of the cost, of select dental services for those who do not already have dental insurance. Indeed, those who already have a good dental coverage plan, as many Canadians do, often through their employer, should not be forced to abandon it in favour of a government-run plan. This way, just as for prescription drugs, the province’s entire population would have dental insurance without limiting choice.

Including dentists and dental hygienists in the elaboration of the government-run program could also ensure that it is well-adapted to the realities of their profession.

Surely, maintaining their professional autonomy is of the utmost importance.

It is worth mentioning that improving the accessibility of dental care can be achieved without increased spending. Introducing public policies that instead increase efficiency can also lead to greater access to health services.

A concrete example of such a policy is the autonomy that was finally granted to dental hygienists in Quebec in 2020 to allow them to work within their own clinics without the supervision of a dentist. Quebec was one of the last provinces in the country to do so, with Prince Edward Island alone now still prohibiting independent practice for these professionals. Entrepreneurship has therefore been encouraged across the country, likely reducing the cost of routine cleaning and thereby improving access to preventive treatments.

Achieving more with the immense amount of money we already spend on our provincial health care systems needs to be explored before resorting to increased spending. Other countries, such as the United Kingdom, can serve as models, as they have less costly universal health care systems that offer greater dental coverage than Canadian provinces currently do.

At the end of the day, we must avoid nationalizing dental care and instead provide coverage for those who can’t afford it. Creating a government-run monopoly would lead to the same problems we see elsewhere in our health care systems – long wait lists, shortages, an overabundance of bureaucracy – none of which will help improve the accessibility of this important service.

We think when we hate someone, we hurt them, but hatred is a curved blade, and the harm we do to others we also do to ourselves.” Mitch Albom Anger is an emotion characterized by antagonism toward someone or something you feel has deliberately done you wrong. Anger is like a red light flashing on the dashboard. It indicates that something has upset you, hurt you or pushed a button. It is normal to feel angry sometimes. It alerts you to action that should perhaps be taken, however venting anger is a whole other thing.

If the red light is flashing on the dash, it indicates something needs attention.

Most try to diagnose the problem, and consider which steps need to be taken, Anger is a secondary emotion. The primary emotions behind it are hurt or fear. If someone cuts you off in traffic, you may feel angry, but that feeling was likely preceded by a sense of shock or fear, as you suddenly had to brake to prevent an accident.

That is a normal reaction. Chasing after the driver, passing to cut him off, or riding his bumper shows the anger has turned to vengeance.

We must try to ascertain if our anger is appropriate to the situation. If we are angry because our teen would rather spend time with friends than with us, that is inappropriate anger. Sure, you might feel hurt by their choice, but getting angry lays a guilt trip and creates more tension in the relationship.

Venting anger is like hearing a smoke alarm and making it louder and louder.

It does nothing to fix the problem.

Venting anger or raging is an aggressive act. Often the individual expressing anger thinks he or she is simply reacting to a real or perceived injustice.

They may blame the one at whom they are venting, assigning to that person’s actions the justification for the outburst.

No one can “make us” get angry. The events or behaviors of others are a stimulus, to be sure, but we, and only we, are responsible for how we respond to that stimulus. When we choose anger, we are attacking the other.

This is not helpful for a few reasons: 1) the person most likely did not intentionally set out to upset us, 2) we may have misinterpreted their intentions or motivations, 3) anger causes the other to distance from us, 4) anger generates defensiveness from the other, or a counterattack, 5) anger diminishes the level of trust between individuals.

An angry response usually means that the individual does not have more sophisticated skills for dealing with the situation. There are plenty of resources in the library, bookstores, and on the internet with strategies for communicating more effectively. If anger is your default program, its time for an upgrade.

Screen Test coming to Killam in September

The successful contractor will be responsible for the daily maintenance of school building contents and equipment, which are to be kept in a neat and sanitary condition, and be capable of addressing minor maintenance issues. Caretakers are responsible to keep all entryways and sidewalks clear of snow and ice in the winter months and will be required to complete a major ‘summer clean’ each year according to BRSD guidelines. Caretakers may also be asked to respond to security alarm calls and to open/close the school building for extra-curricular or other community events. The schedule of regular, yearly, and special duties is available upon request. Killam Public School has an enrollment of approximately 160 students in grades K-9. Starting on Thursday, Sept. 1, the mobile mammography trailer will be stationed at the Killam Health Care Centre, for three days.

A mammogram is a specialized x-ray of the breast and has proven to be the most effective way to detect breast cancer.

Lawrence family holds 41st annual Golf Classic in Forestburg Elaine Fossen The Lawrence family held their 41st annual A. A. Lawrence Golf Classic at the Forestburg Golf Club on the August Long weekend. This was the eighth time that the tournament was held in Forestburg.

The history of this annual tournament is based on family traditions. In the past, the family regularly met every Sunday at the home of their father, Alastair Aeneas Lawrence, for dinner.

During the summer

months, dinner was followed by a golf game. As his wife died at a young age, Alastair took up golfing as a pastime and this pastime was something he could do with all of his children.

Son-in-law, Bruce Hettinger, noticed that his wife, Jane Lawrence, was the happiest when she was with all of her family.

Bruce felt that having an annual tournament would ensure that all of the family would get together at least once a year.

Accordingly on the Au-

gust long weekend in 1981, the first family golf tournament, with 20 people, was held on Saturday and Sunday at the Redwater Golf Club.

Bruce planned a meal and bought goofy prizes for the event and it was a huge success. Since that time, trophies have been purchased and are given out each year.

Sadly Alastair passed away prior to the next tournament, but the children have continued for the next 40 years in his honour.

Something for everyone at Lougheed Fair Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Lougheed Agricultural Society celebrated the 99th annual Lougheed Fair this past Saturday, Aug. 6.

It’s one day where the village’s population doubles, or even triples, as people come from far and wide to take in a multitude of activities.

The Fair parade is always unique, showing off old and new farm machinery, and featuring many of the vehicles who also went on to participate in the annual car show.

The Curling rink featured all the fair entries and the best of the best from locals, who are proud, and rightly so, to see their entries earn first place against other local competitors.

It’s a highlight of the day to browse the fair entries, then sit down and enjoy a slice of homemade pie, especially after looking at the many mouthwatering baking entries on display.

Outside there was a car show, a market, a blacksmithing display, the horse show, the cattle show, ball games, and bouncy houses for the kids. The Iron Creek Museum was open all day for a wander through the past with lots of great displays.

The day started with a pancake breakfast, and ended with a beef supper.

Considering the size of the village and the volunteer pool, the Lougheed Fair is a tremendous feat of community volunteerism at its best.

They are already gearing up for their 100th anniversary, and it’s sure to be spectacular.

Bog in the ‘Burg two days of rip-roaring fun Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Forestburg ‘Bog in the ‘Burg took place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6 and 7, with plenty of fun for racers and fans alike.

This weekend was the official debut of the new pretzel track, which proved to be a big hit with the racers, who came from all over to play in the mud.

There was a minor spill, and a fire, but no injuries, and everyone was quickly back in the action.

The course was in excellent shape, with lots of mud flying as drivers pitted their vehicles and their skill against one another.

The male and female drivers appeared to enjoy the challenge presented by a pit full of mud, and both they and their vehicles were up to the challenge for a great couple of days of racing fun.

Kudos to the hardworking volunteers, who not only put in hours at the event, but in the days and weeks prior to ensure the track is in tip-top shape.

The Rivals took an early lead in the best-of-three series with a 9-2 win on Tuesday, July 26, but lost momentum at home the next evening in Heisler, where they played to a 6-4 loss against Armena, making last Tuesday’s game a make or break situation.

In the other semi-finals, the Vegreville Blue Jays eliminated the Rosalind Athletics in two straight wins: 12-1 on July 26, then 9-5 on Thursday, July 28.

Armena continued on to the finals, dropping their first game against Vegreville 7-1. Those two teams will meet next on Aug. 9 and 11 to decide a winner.

The Rivals joined the Powerline Baseball League in 2022.

Well hello folks. I hope you have had a fabulous week and are enjoying the summer heat and sunshine.

The other night when it was so cool, almost nippy I must say, our fancy farm thermometre registered five degrees! Alberta temperature certainly goes to extremes, never a dull moment.

Long ago I wrote something about keeping a garbage bag of various clothes in the back of your car. You never know when you might need to strip or put on numerous layers of clothes just to keep warm.

The hills are starting to look a bit brown when I gaze out our kitchen window. That is nature’s hint that fall is not far away.

Our sileage is done and now the wait for crops to ripen.

We pray for good harvest weather and please dear God, no tennis-ballsized hail. Farming is such a gamble and sometimes you wonder why you chose such a profession.

I think it is in the genes.

My husband’s heritage is farmers and teachers. My father’s heritage was farmers, politicians, and forest rangers.

Our youngest son loves farming and our oldest son loves working in the trucking end of agriculture... it's all in the genes, eh?

Talking about agriculture made me want to comment on the Lougheed Fair. Wow! Wow! Wow! Kudos to the multitude of dedicated and talented volunteers that brought the Fair to fruition. You have outdone yourselves.

Saturday morning the Sedgewick/Lougheed United Church choir ladies had a practise session in the tiny Anglican Chapel church in the Museum Area.

The groomed museum area and lawns were pristine and we even got to walk on the newly fabricated wooden boardwalk. I felt like I should have been wearing a long, flowing skirt, a fancy blouse with ruffles, and an umbrella to shield my delicate skin.

There was an array of antique farm equipment that piqued my husband’s interest. It was all lined up and cleanly displayed near the church.

So, while the women practised our hymns, my farmer husband went

down memory lane checking out farm implements.

The grounds had numerous interesting booths with items for sale from local produced bacon, to beauty products, and more.

We loved the blacksmith young man, Ethan Harty. It was fascinating to see him fabricate metal products, and since my husband’s father and grandfather did some blacksmithing, my man was enthralled.

This young man also uses his hands for other

talents like playing a fiddle. I just had to purchase his CD of old time fiddle music and it is fabulous.

The curling rink had a huge Bench Fair. The talents ranged from baking, to floral displays, quilting, legos, crocheting, interesting photography, vegetables, and etc. The crowning glory was the Kindergarten children’s portraits of their kindergarten teacher "Miss Vicky." That was my favourite.

Some of the portraits

were pretty good and some appeared as if the kids were high on a candy sugar rush, but these little ones are just five years old and probably pretty proud to see their art on display for their dear teacher. Miss Vicky said this artistic display was a big surprise to her, too... Surprise! We love you teacher, tee hee!

three big cattle that were comfy and clean with big water barrels. They all looked so relaxed and well taken care of. I had to laugh because there was a very well groomed lady ahead of us and she was commenting on the pungent odour of the cattle.

I presumed she was not from a farm. It makes me laugh that she notices that smell.

How about you put three humans in a pen with some food and water and no toilet or toilet paper. Our excrement would soon be wafting around us and the smell would not be pretty. We hide our bathroom smells with fans and air freshener and sometimes even that is not enough.

I have seen artists that

collect dried cow patties and put some sort of acrylic spray products on them and sell them as centerpieces, ashtrays or pen and pencil holders. I have never seen human waste made into artwork... have you?

There was even an event to "dress up your pony" and ride it in the arena and then the numerous large horse talent performances. It was so interesting. I know I do not have the correct descriptors for the horse events but it was so enjoyable.

We really enjoyed all the cool displays of old and fancy vehicles. I wonder do these people ever drive these precious autos?

Their engines looked cleaner than my freshly washed kitchen floor.

The fair is also a time to meet and greet people you often have not seen for a year. Yes Lougheed, you had a wonderful fair.

Till next year, thank you for all your community volunteerism and hard work. You are so appreciated.

On Sunday the Sedgewick/Lougheed churches held their church service at the Museum Anglican church at the Lougheed Fair Grounds. Our director was Gwenda Poyser and this lady managed to play the old pump organ in the church. She blew me away with her talent.

You don't just play the ivory keys, but you have to pump the air paddles with your feet so the sound will come out of the organ, pull on some knobs, you also have to push the knee paddles by opening and closing your legs, and do all that while reading notes.

Yikes, that is like a nightmare to me, but this talented lady managed all that while the little choir sang some

hymns. (numerous choir people were on vacation) Mell, Carol, Ricci, Gwennie, and her visiting daughter Sandie belted out the tunes and Lay Leader Jane Odegard-Dempsey provided a wonderful sermon.

After church the congregation was invited to come up and see all the intricate workings of this antique organ.

We enjoyed after church socializing with coffee and a variety of yummy sweets. What a wonderful weekend.

Enjoy the rest of the summer. I am taking a two-week vacation from writing the column, but will need lots of news for the Aug. 31 paper.

1925 - 2022 On Thursday, August 4, 2022 Sadie Fedoryshen of Vegreville, Alberta formerly of Viking peacefully passed away in her sleep at the age of 96.

Baba Sadie loved her

large and extended family along with her many friends.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and crafts over the years. In her retirement Baba developed a strong and enduring passion for quilting which she never lost. She was so grateful each day for the kind and compassionate care shown her.

Faith: Peace within the storm With the recent increase of gas, food shortages, restrictions on certain freedoms, increasing rates of suicide, and domestic violence, one may wonder if there will be an eventual end to all of this.

What we are seeing in society right now is unprecedented.

Self-preservation seems to be the new method and way of living. It seems like a relentless storm of mishaps is beating down on us with no signs of letting up. However, there is

a solution to all this. The bible has many promises for those who wait and trust in God. As was the case with Moses and the Israelites, when they were before the Red Sea, surrounded by mountains and the angered Egyptians from behind. God did not simply eliminate the obstacles they were facing but He delivered them through it.

Such was the case with David and Goliath and Gideon with his 300 men.

With every biblical char-

acter in the bible, they exude a type of peace while going through their crisis.

Such can happen to us as well. In Christ, the peace that He offers is not just the absence of problems, but rather the presence of Christ while in them.

Thereafter, the annual tournament was held in different locations in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Family members are spread out throughout Canada and the US, however they always tried to come back for the tournament. One family in partic-

ular came from Texas.

There were nine children in the family and each one takes a turn hosting the tournament, to organize and book the next location.

Friends have also volunteered to host. This task rotates from the oldest to youngest.

The tournament has now spanned four generations.

Family and friends so enjoy the event that they plan their summers around it, which usually draws approximately 100

people.

The fact that so many family and friends have gathered for 41 years is amazing.

The Golf Classic first came to Forestburg in 2013. Following that tournament, the family felt that Forestburg was able to meet all of their needs, a nice golf course, camping facilities, and motel accommodations next to the course and a place to hold the banquets for two days.

As such, they have held it in Forestburg ever since,

except for the Forestburg Centennial and one year of Covid. Staff and volunteers at the Golf Club have very generously given up their long weekend to accommodate the tournament and the two banquets.

The group says that one of the highlights of the weekend is that most of the family make a trip to Coutts Home Hardware in Forestburg.

They say that they love the store because it has so much to offer; many even

buy their silent auction items there.

This year they said one of the staff recognized them as soon as they

started browsing which they found amusing and charming. It’s one of the reasons they return to Forestburg each year.

The family of A. A. Lawrence held their 41st annual Golf Classic in Forestburg. The family hails from all around Canada and the US, and in 2013, picked Forestburg as the annual family reunion/golf tourney destination.

Lovely to remain MLA of Camrose constituency after winning UCP vote Moush John Staff Reporter

Incumbent MLA Jackie Lovely will be the face of UCP in the upcoming elections, a decision made by members over three days of voting, Aug. 4-6.

Lovely beat Tofield resident Kevin Smook to stay in the race and will be running as the UCP candidate in Camrose constituency.

“I’d like to thank Kevin Smook and his campaign team for engaging in the political process,” Lovely said.

“Our work helped to create more interest and participation in the provincial leadership election; and campaigning allowed me to have more conversation and interaction with our constituents. Some residents had issues that needed my assistance and I was very happy my office could help!”

Smook said, “The

nomination election didn't turn out the way we had hoped but I'm proud of the efforts of our campaign team, and appreciative of the support we received in my bid for the UCP Camrose candidacy.

“We put forth some good platform ideas, some which were new and others which built off of UCP programs already in place.”

Smook added that he, “met some great people throughout the riding on this journey,” and “attracted many new members to the party during the campaign.”

“I congratulated Jackie Lovely in person on Saturday night.

“Going forward, we need to work together as a constituency to unite conservatives in order to be in a position to win the 2023 election.

“Thank you to our campaign team, donors, and supporters

and thank you to everyone who took the time to come out and vote and be part of the democratic process.”

One of the main platforms that Lovely was working on, nurse practitioners, has made her the lead on the issue, with Health Minister Jason Copping agreeing that she will be taking the reins in working with the nurse practitioners.

“I see working with these professionals as an opportunity for us to improve the quality and availability of healthcare in our constituency and the province,” she said.

“Some individuals were having difficulty getting a new doctor as a couple left recently.”

Among the conversations that Lovely has had are about people being interested in job creation, keeping taxes low, and ensuring access to healthcare.
