ASB yard beautification tour source of great inspiration Michelle Pinon Editor

Dan Warawa, Chairman of the Lamont County Agricultural Service Board, (ASB) welcomed participants of the 2016 Yard Beautification Tour shortly after 9 a.m. Friday morning. “Welcome to the tour,” stated Warawa. He hoped everyone was equipped with cameras as they would be seeing five beautiful properties throughout the day long tour. The first stop was a short distance southeast of Lamont at the home of Bruce and Karen Suffield. After a tour of the yard, garden, and home of the Suffield’s, Reeve Wayne Woldanski stated: “Thanks for opening up the yard, and allowing us to tour the

place. It’s a beautiful place.” Their place, an expansive property of more than 20 acres featured a natural landscape as well as walking trail, garden, area for chickens, flower beds, deck, and covered porch attached to their rustic house they have called home for 30 years. When they moved in, “It was a skeleton.” The couple finished all of the work on the interior of the home, and later added a deck and porch, adding that it was a great location to raise their two children Jodie and Graham. Both Bruce and Karen are retired teachers, and love spending time with their two children, and three grandchildren. They said they were very surprised and humbled when they were asked to be recipients of the award, and

honoured to be recognized by the ASB. The next stop was the yard of Lamont area residents Tim and Valerie Nimchuk. Tim welcomed everyone to the property they purchased from the Walker family in 1993. Tim said the Walker family owned the general store in Lamont for many years. “Nothing’s original except the red shed and the house.” The home was extensively renovated over the years, with sheds, garage, deck, garden, root cellar, and other areas of the property developed along the way. “The boys have a bit of a project this year, planting just under 2,100 trees.” Tim went on to say that he loves fruit trees, and has several kinds planted on the property. “I have a bad

habit of growing garlic,” added Tim, who has between 500 and 600 heads of garlic growing this year. About 8.8 acres of the farm site has been developed, and he wanted to thank his parents Orest and Lillian for helping out as well as his three sons, who are charged with the task of mowing the lawn. Plans are also in the works for a greenhouse, and Coun. Robert Malica congratulated the entire family for all of their hard work and dedication as well as their volunteer efforts in the community. The next stop was at the home of Chris and Jody Zachoda northeast of St. Michael. “I always wanted to live in a forest,” said Jody, who got her wish in 1999 when the 80 acre property came up for sale. Elk Island National Park celebrates all things bison

MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS

Thousands of visitors flocked to Elk Island National Park on Saturday, August 13th for the third annual Bison Festival. The Ironhead Dancers wowed the crowd with their traditional native dancing performances held throughout the afternoon near Astotin Lake. The American Bison Association had a popular display as well as this eye catching skeletal outline and full profile of the bison for people to compare with while they browsed around the vendors market. There were several culinary demonstrations by local chefs as well as canoeing, hiking, biking, and picnicking to enjoy.

Opinion Fair election system necessary, says NDP MLA By Rod Loyola, MLA Edmonton – Ellerslie Our government is strongly committed to creating a fair, democratic and modern electoral system that doesn’t put special interests ahead of average Albertans. But we continue to face fierce resistance from those who think that old, outdated election laws shouldn’t be updated for the 21st cen-

tury. They want to return to the days of back room deals where decisions were just political favours to pay off campaign donations. As a member of the All-Party Task Force on Ethics and Accountability, I have brought forward a proposal to mod-

ernize our electoral system by introducing a rebate system for election expenses that exists at the federal level and with seven other provinces. Rebates cannot be viewed in isolation. They are part of a series of improvements that are critical to any fair electoral system that includes banning union and corporate donations, setting limits on donations and on campaign spending, and closing loopholes in the law that don’t line up with the principles of transparency and accountability. It is essential that we reduce the impact of special interest groups and not allow big money

campaign manager Tom Flannagan made an impassioned pitch for these very reforms, including rebates, in an opinion piece he wrote for a national newspaper shortly after the 2012 election. He pointed out that the reforms we are now proposing would promote better democracy that better represent average Albertans. However, if you listen to the inflammatory rhetoric of the opposition parties, especially the Wildrose and Conservative Parties, you would think that there is something new and sinister about all of this. But let’s consider some facts. When he was MP for Fort

to continue influencing our electoral system. Our government has already banned corporate and union donations, but there is more to do. Under our current election laws, individuals can donate as much as $100,000 per fouryear election cycle and parties can spend as much money as they want. This needs to stop, which requires change. Our efforts are being fiercely resisted and our ideas are being misrepresented by those on the committee who think that it’s okay to keep the old rules and old attitudes. There is nothing new about rebates. In fact, former Wildrose Party

McMurray-Athabasca, Wildrose Leader Brian Jean’s campaigns accepted more than $155,000 in rebates. Jason Kenney, the Conservative MP for Calgary Southeast who is currently running to be PC leader, has also accepted rebates for campaigns in excess of $150,000. Similarly, the Saskatchewan Party and Brad Wall have accepted rebates as did former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the federal Conservatives. All these individuals did it because they knew that rebates help promote our democracy by keeping big special interest donations out of politics. In short, there is nothing

Life rife with scammers - beware Over the past couple of months I’ve heard my share of scamming stories. I always react the same, mouth gaping in disbelief followed by words of indignation, with involuntary shaking of the head from side to side. Unfortunately, those of us who grew up in a time where your word was everything, a deal was sealed with only a handshake, and you took people at their word, and if need be, gave them the benefit of the doubt; it is hard to believe, let alone accept, that disrespect, dishonesty and deceptiveness is the normal, operating standards for a lot of people. One of the most commonly reported scams is the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam. This scam involves one

or several persons who contact individuals by phone claiming to be from the CRA and stating that due to tax errors, a warrant for their arrest has been issued. In order to correct this tax error, the victims are told that the CRA has worked out a deal with iTunes so that a safe and secure debt settlement can occur through the purchase of iTunes gift cards. According to RCMP, “It should be noted that these suspects are able to have phone numbers associated to the CRA, RCMP, and other government organizations appear on caller display. Police say if contacted by a person or persons claiming to represent the CRA, do not comply with any requests, unless you have received offi-

cial written correspondence. “Keep in mind, under no circumstance will the Government of Canada or the CRA request payment through the purchase and transfer of gift cards. If contacted, get the phone number on your call display, and contact the CRA from officially listed numbers on their website to confirm the legitimacy of the call, or contact your local police service.” Another recent scam I heard of was of a person phoning to say their credit card had been used in a foreign country 15 minutes ago for $600, and asked if I had my card, and that they would cancel it for them. The caller then said they had the first four digits, and wanted the rest of the numbers in order to

verify the card number. Fortunately, the person did not fall for the scammer’s request, and said they would cancel the card themselves, before hanging up. Then they called their credit card company to confirm if any transactions had been processed for $600. No transactions for that amount had been processed. They also noted that credit card companies will not ask you to verify your credit card number because they have them on file. I guess you never know when you will be on a scammer’s hit list, but at least you are now better informed, and hopefully prepared if you find yourself in that type of that situation.

partisan about this approach to election fairness. It fact, it is just the opposite. During the last election, we heard loud and clear from Albertans that they wanted to strengthen our democracy by getting big money out of politics. We’ve waited 44 years in this province for a fair election system, one where Albertans’ interests, not special interests, are heard and one where parties conduct business in the public eye, not in back rooms and one where big ideas and not big money determine the outcome. Let’s get down to work for the benefit of all Albertans.

Local firefighters up to the challenge By Michelle Pinon Editor

Scott Calder and Andrew McDonald are just two local first responders who are answering the 22 Push Up Challenge. Both are members of the Lamont Fire Department, and have been challenging themselves and other people they know to complete 22 push up a day for 22 days to raise awareness for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Facebook chal-

lenge has steadily been gaining momentum, and

Calder is trying his best to encourage supporters. On day 10 of his challenge, Calder posted: “They may not be the best push ups, but if you have time to critique them, you have time to do them, and if you have time to do them‌Do them for PTSD, they are the ones that need support. Battle on brothers and sisters.â€? The initiative is to raise awareness of the stresses that first responders and veterans face each and every day in their lives. The overall goal is to reach 22 million pushups, and to participate, all you have to do is post videos of you doing the push ups, and nominating a different person each day. While not all people who are traumatized develop PTSD, many people do experience symptoms. Generally, symptoms of PTSD can

occur when a person reexperiences the traumatic event, tries to avoid thinking about the event, or is experiencing high levels of anxiety related to the event. Some of the most common symptoms include: reoccuring nightmares, acting or feeling as though the traumatic event were happening again, surge in heart rate or sweating, difficulty falling or staying asleep, feeling more irritable or having angry outbursts, feeling on guard like danger is present, as well as avoiding thoughts, feelings or conversations about the event. Wounded Warriors Canada is also supporting the initiative. The organization has a mission to honour and support Canada’s ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans, first responders and their families.

Moonshine distiller to pay homage to age old tradition By Michelle Pinon Editor Rob de Groot, founder of Red Cup Distillery in Vegreville says that if not for such a longstanding tradition of moonshine making in the area, he would not have been allowed to open his doors for business. ‘Upholding the Tradition’ is his company’s motto, and he firmly believes if it weren’t for the local culture, he would not have been given the ability to make his Wheat Shine. On Saturday, Aug. 20th he will be paying homage to the early settlers who integrated the beverage into their lifestyle by hosting two presentations, ( 1 and 3 p.m.) in the beer gardens at the Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival. In the old days people would bring homemade moonshine to weddings, parties, and dances, and

de Groot says the area along the North Saskatchewan River north of Andrew and east towards Smoky Lake had several notable producers. “Without them, I wouldn’t be open.” So, in addition to great information, de Groot will have several stories to tell during his presentation. He adds, there are probably a lot of pre baby boomers who knew or were even related to folks who made moonshine, so this would be a great way to reconnect with their roots. de Groot began operating Red Cup Distillery on Dec 6, 2015. The Vegreville based craft distillery uses local grain, in house green malt and prairie moonshine recipes in a locally made 250 pot still and open wood fermenters. “We use only 100 per cent hard red wheat.” His recipe only includes

and pick up bottles of his moonshine, yet about 40 per cent of his sales are from supporters who live in Lamont County and surrounding Capital Region. “We sell out of every batch. ”de Groot says his signature spirit has a “unique taste” and the flavour tastes like more. “It’s a kaleido-

Fast rising success has even prompted this entrepreneur to expand his operation, and will be expanding to accommodate a plant and more local craftsman. “We hope to begin operating in September, and plans to produce 10,000 bottles per month.

Lamont County approves annexation proposal Michelle Pinon Editor Lamont County council has endorsed a compromise proposal regarding the Town of Bruderheim’s proposed annexation. The new proposal includes only part of the parcels of land that was originally presented on Dec. 4, 2015. According to Lamont

County CAO Robyn Singleton, “The compromise annexation would provide the Town of Bruderheim room for commercial and industrial expansion without unreasonable impact upon Lamont County while avoiding the time and financial implications of proceding to a contest annexation hearing process.” As for the cost of con-

senting to the proposed annexation? Singleton stated: “The cost of consenting to the proposed annexation is limited to lost tax revenues for these lands included in the annexation as of the date such annexation is completed.” The compromise pro-

posal was tentatively agreed upon during a joint meeting on June 22nd. Municipal interin Jordan Panasiuk, who has been working closely with Town of Bruderheim CAO Patty Podoborozny for over the past year on the

Beautification award recipients recall their labour of love stories Continued from Page 2. Jody said she loves the peace and privacy, and the fact they are close to where Chris grew up, and where the talented welder and farmer continues to live and work. “We appreciate sharing our yard with friends and family.” The pool, which is integrated into the outside deck is a very popular place, and there are several natural trails to enjoy walking on. Coun. Roy Bryks, who worked 25 winters logging, said he chose the Zachoda’s place because of the trees which offer much peace and serenity. “Not to mention bears and wild animals, and birds.” Next up was the home and yard of Ron Stratichuk of Sniatyn Farms, who moved onto the property, and built a brand new home in 2013. He planted numerous Spruce trees in 1985 and ’86, and spent several months this summer finishing the landscaping, adding flowers and sod as well as paving his laneway. Usually he

plants a big garden, but admitted: “I ran out of time this year.” Sniatyn Farms consists of 640 acres. On average he seeds 2,500 acres of grain each year, and continues the tradition handed down from his parents William and Christine. Ron farms with his son Jason, who was on hand for the presentation, along with his wife Amanda, and baby Marley. Coun. Roy Anaka complemented him on all of his yard work and agreeing to be a recipient. “He just said yes, and made it happen.” The last stop of the tour was the yard of Ernest and Val Chmilar, who started with a completely blank slate on their Mundare area property 24 years ago. Val told participants that Ernest hauled a large rock from their dug out, and placed it in what would become a dominant feature in their yard in addition to the original well from the old farmstead. The couple started from the ground up, and

planted 3,000 trees by hand. They planted Spruce, Laural Leaf and Golden Willows, as well as Lilac trees. “These trees came from Lamont County,” pointed out Val during the stop over. The couple also developed a beautiful garden and backyard complete with lounge area, and spacious deck for entertaining. At one time, Val says she planted a lot of flowers, but have been replace with mostly perennials. The Chmilar’s have three daughters, (Alaina, Chantel and Laura), as well as grandchildren Bentley and Auguilera. On hand for the presentation was daughter Laura and her husband Kevin, as well as Val’s mother Olga. Val is the oldest of five children, and her birthday falls the same day on her late grandfather Peter Matulionis’ birthday. Olga went on to say her father, who immigrated from Latvia, lived and worked in the Lamont area around 1920 before making his way down to settle in southern Alberta. Ernest is a fourth generation farmer. His great grandfather was Fred, whose homestead is located only a mile and a half

away from the Chmilar’s. Ernest has farmed for 46 years, and

retired teacher, and also teaches fitness classes.

Pioneer families recognized during Ukrainian Day Submitted by: Betty Gegolick, granddaughter of Toma Andriuk I was very pleased and proud to receive the Pioneer Centenary Certificate on behalf of the Andriuk Family. My grandfather came to Canada in 1900 from Banvilla, Bukovina at the age of 21. He bought his homestead in 1901, in the

Shandro District. In 1902, he married Sarafina Odenski. They had nine children. He built a log house with a sod roof, with trees from his farm. The house had one small window and one small door. Later he built a summer kitchen, a big red barn, a two story house, a garage, and grain bins. He also sup-

plied the lumber to build two churches, the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Churches in Shandro and Dasjarlais. To earn money, he and two friends would walk to Ft. Edmonton. He also rode box cars to

Southern Alberta to work on building the railroad. The Andriuk name was one of more than 230 pioneers of Ukrainian descent to have their name inscribed into the Centenary Monument

that day. The project, spearheaded by the AlbertaUkraine Genealogical Project, will be in its final year next year. The program honours all pioneer families, who immigrated to east cen-

tral Alberta prior to 1915. Eligible families are recognized with a certificate that is presented annually during Ukrainian Day festivities at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village.

Town of Lamont selects yard beautification winners Michelle Pinon Editor A handful of deserving Lamont residents were recently recognized for their time, hard work and dedication to beautification through a special awards program. A total of five residential properties were selected as winners of the 2016 Communities In Bloom/Miracle-Gro Best Garden Selection Award program in the Town of Lamont. The recipients include: Elmer and Donna Pullishy, Ilse Saleski, Lynn Mohninger and Greg Huxley, Herman and Linda Sieker, and Dan and Marg Storozhenko. Each of them were formally recognized for their efforts on Friday, August 5th when town staff presented them with two jugs of fertilizer, a sign and letter of congratulations. “Mayor and council

feel that recognizing citizens for their hard work to make their yards look so appealing goes a long way in community relations,” stated Town of Lamont Chief Administrative Officer Sandi Maschmeyer. She went on to say, “There are so many beautiful yards that it was a very difficult decision.” Maschmeyer explained that mayor and council drove around town and submitted their lists. Staff reviewed the lists, and the yards that received more than one vote were selected. Maschmeyer heard about the program through an email that was sent to her by Scott Miracle Gro. Even though the town does not belong to Communities in Bloom, it could still apply to participate in the program. “I thought we should apply to recognize as

many of our residents that do such a great job on their yards.” If the program is offered again next year, Maschmeyer says the town will definitely participate. She and council are also very proud of how nice the town looks.“Our staff does a great job in making sure that everything looks so nice despite how much rain we have had. We have

had numerous visitors stop in and comment on how nice the town looks. The Town of Lamont used to participate in the Communities in Bloom program, but Maschmeyer says they no longer do so, as the volunteers who originally spearheaded the endeavour decided to retire.

Adam Stock returns to Lamont Aug. 20 Michelle Pinon Editor

Adam Stock, the annual musical concert to raise funds for families with children who have cancer, will be returning to Lamont on Saturday, August 20th. The third annual concert, which kicks-off at 12 Noon, will feature several popular bands from the Capital Region who will be performing until 10 p.m. at the recreation grounds. The line up of talent includes: Sudden

Discharge, Rellik, Shag, Thistle, Soap Box Duo, Justin Hogg, Andrea Nixon, and Candace Brown. The concert is family orientated, and merchandise as well as food can be purchased throughout the event. All money raised goes towards Adam’s Army Charitable Foundation, and a portion goes towards the Kids with Cancer Society. Since Adam Stock falls on what would have been Cripp’s 18th birthday, there will also be a beer garden on site for concert goers. Admission is $5 at the gate.

Lamont teen Cena Danyluk, will be volunteering during the event, and is looking forward to contributing to Adam Cripp’s legacy. “When I lived in Edmonton, I went to the same school as Adam, but I never got a chance to meet him because he was sick.” Cena found out about Adam Stock through the Adam’s Army Facebook page that was established several years ago, and wanted to get personally involved in the concert. “I thought what better way to honour his memory than to volunteer at the concert.”

Classifieds ________________________ CARDOF OF THANKS THANKS CARD ________________________ Another car show over for another year and what an awesome event it was. W e are so happy with the turn out we had and the generosity of the people who came out today to support the museum. We had about 70 cars for the car show and we had a steady str eam of people coming for br eakfast. It was fantastic. W e have so many people to thank who helped us out today and preparing for the event. Earl and Rose Kjelland (V iking Funeral Service and Cr eative Sandblasting) or ganized and donated all the food and drinks for lunch. They also worked all day today and r ecruited Rose’s sister and br other-in-law who helped all day as well. Dorothy White or ganized the pancake br eakfast and picked up all the food and recruited all the cooks. Nettie Petrowsky and Ir ene Arndt did a fantastic job cooking br eakfast as usual. Chris Sutter and Arnold Poohkay also helped out in the cook tent. The entertainment was fantastic, and Deb Hill gets the cr edit for lining up these fabulous performers. Ethan Harty not only had our toes tapping to his fiddle playing, but also braved the heat and showed us how to make some neat things with his hammer and for ge. Garry McDevit lined up all the door prizes and handed out hundr eds of flyers to promote the car show . Eileen, Jim, and Heather Lawes took turns gr eeting people at the gate. Mor gan, Emma and I did face painting. Courtney and Reagan have done a gr eat job making the museum look its best for all the visitors. Atco gas pr ovided the bbq and tent, and the V iking Ag Society pr ovided another . The town of V iking helped us out with photocopying. Mike and I would like to thank all of these wonderful people (and anyone I forgot to thank - like V egreville Ford for bringing a display of new cars and tr ucks) for all their contributions to this event, and to everyone who came and supported the museum. 32WRc

Mundare Ag. Society carries on bench show tradition Volunteer dedicates more than 30 years to chair popular event Michelle Pinon Editor Agricultural societies and bench shows have a rich history in Alberta, and Mundare is no exception. Bench Show Chairperson Pat Tompkins has been involved since Mundare Agri-Daze began in 1982. “I like to exhibit myself and I knew they needed the help, so I’ve been here ever since.” While the number of exhibitors varies from year to year, Tompkins would like to have over 50 exhibitors participate each and every year. One of the common comments she hears during the bench show is: “Oh, I’ve got nice ones at home.” That is why she encourages each and every person she comes in contact with to enter the event. This year’s Bench Show will be held on August 19th and 20th at the Mundare Recreation Centre. Entries are accepted between 12 Noon and 4 p.m. on Friday, with the exhibition open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There are two youth categories, 11-17 years of age, and 10 and under, as well as an adult category. One entry per family is allowed in each of the categories of: home baking, grains and grasses, vegetables, home grown fruit, flowers, potted plants, preserves, photography, as well as handicrafts, sewing and hobby crafts. In addition to awarding prize money for the top three entries in each of the categories, rosettes, which are the most coveted, are awarded for first place in the cookie jar category, heaviest zucchini, nicest veggie display, and freak of nature category. Even though flowers are by far the most popular category, Tompkins would like to see more entries in the grains and grasses category since Mundare is a farming community. Over the years she has “picked up ideas from other fairs” to incorporate in the

Mundare Bench Show. She likes to make judges, exhibitors, and attendees feel welcome during the show, and says it’s a great opportunity to display their talents as well as visit with family, friends and neighbours. Her favourite part is seeing people come in with their entries. Tompkins said she put together a bench show without the assistance of volunteer committee members, who ensure the entries are accounted for and organized properly. She is also grateful to sponsors for supplying prizes for the exhibitor draws. There are three draws in the adult category and three draws in the youth category, (11-17 years of age).

Co-ordinating the bench show has truly been a labour of love for Tompkins, and she hopes the tradition will carry on indefinitely for people of all ages to enjoy. Early agricultural societies developed fairs and exhibitions so farmers could share production information amongst each other. These events were seen as opportunities to gather people from neighbouring areas, learn something new, and have a good time doing it. More than a century later, ag. societies still host more than 1,000 fairs and agricultural events each year. The first agricultural society in Alberta was Edmonton Northlands that was established in

1879. Several other cities soon followed suit, and by 1940 there were 30 agricutlural societies, with the number jumping to 49 in 1970. The Mundare & District Agricultural Society was established in 1975 and has initiated several projects in the community as well as recreational facilities in the community. Currently, there are 295 active agricultural societies in the province, according to MICHELLE PINON PHOTO Alberta AgriculPat Tompkins displays one of the rosettes that will be ture & Forestry. awarded to the first place winner in the categories of: best cookie jar, heaviest zucchini, nicest vegetable display, and freak of nature.
