Bruderheim serviceman soldiers-on to Florida for Warrior Games

BY JANA SEMENIUK Bruderheim resident Kelly Potts, 52, is busy packing this week for a trip to Florida where he will be participating on a Canadian team of injured and disabled military members and veterans in an international sporting event aimed at changing their lives. “It gives you hope,” said Potts. “I would never have been able to be part of Team Canada, and here I am a part of Team Canada. “ Potts, who has spent the past 30 years with the Canadian Navy, said he was thrilled when he got the email that he had been selected to compete on Team Canada in the Warrior Games, an annual event which began in 2010, and is organized by the United States Department of Defence. It will take place Aug. 19 – 28 at the ESPN Wild World of Sports Complex in Orlando Florida with opening ceremonies headlined by three-time Grammy winner Darius Rucker. Team Canada is managed through the Canadian Armed Forces’ Soldier On program which supports the recovery of ill and injured military members and veterans, through sport and recreational Accordingopportunities.to the Warrior Games website, Team Canada consists of 40 serving members and veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces, joining nearly 300 athletes from across the globe representing the U.S. military and ally nations participating in the event. Potts said that he had no idea how joining Soldier On would come to change his life. He developed issues with his feet and shoulders from years in the Canadian Navy and felt the organization might be a good fit for him when he wanted to learn how to golf in 2016. However, Potts soon found himself facing another health challenge in 2017 while deployed in Latvia; he was diagnosed with bladder cancer only two weeks away from the end of his deployment.“Theyasked me if I wanted to go home,” he said. “If it had been in the middle of a tour I would have. But it literally was December 28 when I found out that I had it, and I was going home January 13.”

Potts made the decision in 2019 to have his bladder removed and a urostomy put in. While he healed and today is cancer free, he has continued to improve his mental and physical health by participating in activities with Soldier On. “It’s just really awesome. To be around people, and you think that you got it bad. And then they're in a wheelchair and they're worse off than you,” he said. “Its just their injuries are different. But they do it. People go with no bottom of their leg, or missing an arm and they participate in whatever they canIndo.”addition to physical limitations, the group also helps its members cope with mental health trauma. Potts said he has been deployed six times and witnessed some very traumatic events that have stayed with him over the years. He said that he, along with other members, found strength and motivation from being a part of the group. “It is inspiring. That's what it's meant to be. There’s been guys opening up telling us stuff they've never told anybody since they came back from war,” he said. “They tell us about their struggles with mental health and we're there to support them and tell them, you know we have similar injuries and we found it tough too but we're always here. You can talk to us, you know our numbers now. So, give us a call Meanwhile, anytime.”Potts and the other competitors participated in a five-day training camp in Edmonton last month to help prepare for the games and since then, Potts has been training on his own focusing on cycling around town. “I want to get through the cycling. I'm pretty sure I can get through the rest. I just want to get through the cycling, and not falling down, and being able to unclip my shoe from my pedal,” he said. Potts will be competing in four of the 14 scheduled events: professional cycling, discus, shotput, and air rifle. While he said he is nervous and excited to be a part of the annual event, he is hoping to eventually go further and participate in the International Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014.

Letter to the editor Beware of weeds BY JANA SEMENIUK When Lois Zyla, treasurer for the Mundare Senior Drop-In Centre, read about the plight of the County of Lamont Food Bank in the July 27 edition of the Lamont Leader (Food Bank Feeling the Crunch of Inflation) she knew the senior centre could help. “I read the Lamont Leader and there was a picture of Zachoda (Jody) saying how bare the shelves were. So, we had a meeting and I said you know what the bank is in dire need of food. And I said we have a buyer for perogies, let's make them and the money will go to the food bank,” she said. The County of Lamont Food Bank reported last month that the demand for food hampers was up while food supply was down. Board Chair Jody Zachoda attributed the increased need to higher food and gas costs in addition to those paying back their CERB (COVID Emergency Response Benefit) payments from last year, leaving people strapped for income. Zyla sprung into action earlier this month calling a list of community volunteers to help make the perogies on Aug. 9 and to her astonishment everyone came. “And they brought their husbands to roll the dough!” she said.

Dear Editor: "Be aware of Alberta invasive species called noxious weeds. Are all these weeds in the county or just in the county office? We feel we’ve been dealt with poorly in regard to weed control. Has this happened to you? This county should, being zealots about a “minor act / law”, spray the entire County to suit yourselves. Not trying to use strong arm tactics to coerce senior citizens into paying for what?" Yours sincerely D. Miller /S. Rivard Lamont County resident

Zyla added that the crew of 22 volunteers made 120 dozen perogies in 90 minutes which is expected to bring in $500 for the Food Bank. She said the community effort also affords an opportunity for younger people to learn the art of making perogies by volunteering.“Wehad one (volunteer) that joined the club, she's young too, and she came to the last bee we had. It was her first time and she made them perfect. She loves cooking, but she never made perogies before,” she said. Meanwhile, Zyla said it was special that people were working together to help the Food Bank. “It’s not just the senior centre, it’s the whole community doing this,” she said. “It’s spearheaded by the seniors.”

Zyla added that there is always room for more volunteers, and anyone interested should contact the Mundare Senior Drop-In Centre.

Essay critics back freedom of speech if it fits their agenda only

So Armstrong Homeniuk, along with Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, went ahead, read the five entries and posted the winners online using a government website. Now, at no time did they say the UCP was running this contest. At no time did they say the entries represented any type of government policy – past, present or future.Infact it was an initiative under the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Canadian Region, an organization I can’t say I know much about. In fact before this controversy I’d never heard of it. The entries were the opinions of five young women, I suspect of different backgrounds from around the province.Theprizes for this contest were gift certificates of a few hundred dollars to be spent on swag at the Legislative GiftThisShop.was a contest that didn’t really offer exciting prizes nor obviously did it inspire many to enter. But the fallout. The first and second places in the contest went greatly unnoticed, but the third place winner has been lambasted as racist, misogynistic, and hate-filled by the opposition NDP led by the virtuous Janis Irwin. Parts of the essay in question states that “women are not exactly equal to men,” “to try to promote that women break into careers that men traditionally dominate is not only misguided, but it is harmful,” and that it's important for Albertan mothers to give birth as there is a belief that “Albertan children are unnecessary as we can import foreigners to replace ourselves.”

BY JOHN MATHER So a real non-story has been making the rounds the past week for all the wrong reasons.

The “Her Vision Inspires Essay Contest” attracted five entries from across the province. At that point, Armstrong-Homeniuk should have admitted the contest was a failure, thanked the entrants, cancelled the contest and gone back to the drawing board. But hindsight is a wonderful tool none of us have.

It all started when UCP Fort Saskatchewan Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk posted on a government website that she was hosting a contest back in February asking young Albertan women aged between 18 and 25 to share their vision of Alberta and what they would do if they were an MLA.

What sort of society will we have if the NDP are voted in and as a party, they share the vision that free speech is OK as long as it’s free speech we agree with.As for me, I read and see a lot of commentary. If I don’t like it I move on and pass it by. I’ll read and listen to much I disagree with. That’s how I form an opinion, but I don’t condemn the authors or speakers. They have their opinions and I have mine. The importance of this was hammered home on Friday with the attack on world renowned author SalmanAuthorRushdie.BenOkri said, “We already live in a climate in which it is increasingly harder to express oneself freely. The internet has unleashed the monsters of trolling and hate speech. Death threats are issued to celebrities and to ordinary citizens expressing themselves on any number of Margaretissues.”Atwood said Rushdie had never missed an opportunity to speak out on behalf of the principles he had embodied in all his writing life. “Freedom of expression was foremost among these,” she stated. People shouldn’t be scorned, mocked, or ridiculed for their ideas. Unfortunately the woke, politically correct left excel at this very thing.

BY HAZEL ANAKA Have you noticed that when it rains, it pours? And I’m not talking in the meteorological sense; I mean in the Murphy’s Law sense…that if things can go wrong, they will. And probably in threes. I told you about the compromised credit card saga. Would you believe I didn’t get my card until August 12th and that’s probably only because a staff member became such a pest inquiring about it. Problem is, Roy’s card hasn’t been replaced so the drama continues. This thing has necessitated a PIN change but hey, this brain of mine still has a few gigs of RAM left for crap like this. The staff person also applied for a no fee, low limit credit card as a spare. I’ve also since applied for another card. Did you know that too many credit card applications adversely affect your credit score? We also received some restaurant gift certificates from the branch to help ease the sting of this experience. Bon appetit. I might also have mentioned that my iPhone has been acting up. I started believing my iPhone 8 wanted to grow up to be a big boy 12 or 13 or whatever and that’s why it was so unreliable…to force mama’s hand. Technology, 1; Hazel 0. I ended up buying the iPhone 13ProMax which just happened to be on sale. Why? Because the iPhone 14 is just weeks away from release so old stock needs to move. When I asked the young man, no the boy helping me how old my phone was he said five years, which we know is approximately a hundred in technology years. You’d think they could come up with more exciting colours. I picked green and a clear plastic case so the colour, such as it is, shows. Add a screen protector and the cost begins adding up. The lack of a home button is taking some getting used to. I’m not at all impressed that none of the iPhones have a pause button when videotaping. Come hell or high water, I will make some YouTube videos and I surely don’t want to have to learn how to edit too. It seems the transfer of data from old phone to new one is a lot smoother than it used to be. It has a whopping 128 GB of storage; double the old one. Should I stop paying for extra iCloud and Google storage I ask the two guys working the store? Probably not; you still want the peace of mind if something goes wrong. Sheesh.Between the worry about the credit card and the adjustment to the new phone, you’ve gotta know something else was sure to happen in these last busy, critical days before Babas and Borshch. How about this? At 6 AM Tuesday morning we awake to the ear-piercing squeal of three smoke detectors. Confusion, disbelief, and concern are the first reactions. We see no flames and smell no smoke, so what the hell is going on. Because these puppies are hard-wired in and interconnected, there is no stopping the deafening sound of any of them. Before our addition four year ago, we had a couple battery operated ones strategically located. When the batteries were getting low, you got a lowpitched annoying reminder to do something. Even hard-wired units have back-up batteries so we got a step ladder and Roy replaced all the batteries. The squealing continued. By the way, our smoke detectors are bilingual. She kept saying Fire in both English and French. At one point she threw in carbon monoxide just for fun. I suggested Roy call the regional fire chief for advice while I googled for answers. They didn’t seem to be on a separate breaker so we couldn’t stop it that way. Apparently, they get tied into lights so if there’s a malfunction, it becomes apparent when the lights no longer work. That would have the dark but silent way to get our attention I Apparently, suppose.thisis not that uncommon. Usually holding the reset button for about 30 seconds solves the problem. It’s now about 7 AM and it is Council Meeting day so Roy needs to get ready and go. There was peace and quiet until about 9. Then it started again. The builders had installed a smoke detector in my office because some future homeowner would likely use it as a bedroom and code demands it. So, I’m working away at my computer and this hell starts again. By this time, I’d found some of those spongy hot pink ear plugs and was wearing them. I’m sure you know how well they fit. Not at all. But it did help muffle the sound slightly. In the meantime, I’d contacted the builder and the electrician who’d worked on our house called me back. I couldn’t believe he remembered so much about our job but he did. Doesn’t happen often, but it could be a defective smoke detector, he says. By noon, the damn things were shrilling again.Frankly, I didn’t have the time or desire to entertain an electrician but I’m so glad someone showed up. He replaced two main floor smoke detectors and has since texted to see if everything is okay. Do you have any idea how good silence sounds? I understand the need for the loud, piercing, nonstop sound…what if people were deaf or stoned or in a drunken stupor…but OMG, it was awful. Lord, give me strength…. that’s about all the drama I can take for a while, from where I sit. Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), Wednesday, August 17, 2022 - 5

JANA SEMENIUK Newly elected Village of Andrew Councillor Evan Genung said he was not expecting such a low voter turnout for the two candidate byelection Aug. 8. The defeated candidate, Angela Diedrich, lost by only one vote. “I was kind of surprised that out of the almost 300 people that could have voted, there was only 59 votes cast,” heInsaid.his campaign, Genung included a mailout sending 250 onepage flyers to residents of the village, outlining his concerns and introducing himself. “I've been in town (for) nine years, and I don't know how many times people said ‘oh, you just moved here?’ No, I’ve been here nine years. So, with that kind of feedback, that's why I did the mail out,” he said. “And I guess it paid some dividends because I won.” Genung, 61, has worked as a City of Edmonton transit driver for the past 19 years. He said that he now has enough seniority to choose his shifts and is looking forward to spending time in the village.“Beginning in September, because of this new council position, I signed a shift that gives me Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday off every week, so that gives me the day off for definitely every council meeting and also gives me a couple of days during the week,” he“Whethersaid. it's going to have coffee with the Rainbow Club or drop in on the people with FCSS or whatever is going on in town. Or I could start showing up to council meetings and have an idea from the inside looking out,” he said.“So, a lot of it has been what's been hitting the news. And not all of it is very settling. Some of it is somewhat unsettling.” Genung said that his priorities going into his first term are the large amount of tax and water bill arrears, unattended properties, and the tax increase.“Those are high on my list. You know, in talking with some of the other council members, there's a lot of bylaws that are on the record that may be outdated. So that's another issue that I think we should tackle,” he said.Genung will be sworn in at the next regular council meeting Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.

8 - The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), Wednesday, August 17, 2022 Location:

Approximately 30 people of all ages gathered at the Chipman Seniors’ Club Aug 14 for free hotdogs, popsicles, and juice to celebrate their community.Club president Orest Eleniak said that a large grant from the federal government for building upgrades earlier this year was contingent on the group also doing something for the community, and they decided an appreciation day was the best bet. “We needed to do more (for the community) than what we are already doing,” he said. “This is the first time we have had a total appreciationEleniak,(day).”76, added that while most of the grant money, totalling $22,000, went towards a new roof for their facility, they were still able to put some funds into some new equipment for the kitchen and a new computer.“It’s a community type computer,” he said. “Anyone in the community can use it if they needTheit.” Seniors Club members fundraise mostly through Ukrainian dinners they host a few times a year. In addition to cooking the meal, the group also drives individual meals to the assisted living centre in Lamont. Socializing happens every week with a coffee day.Although the group is called the Chipman Seniors Club, Eleniak said people do not have to be seniors to join and the group is always looking for more members. “Anyone over the age of 40 can join,” he said. “You don’t have to be a senior.” 553018R.Rd.192being1MileNorthofLamonton831toHiway29then2MilesEasttoR.Rd.192&South¾Mileor

BY JOHN MATHER The Lamont County Reeve’s Golf Tournament went off smoothly on Aug. 11 with 116 golfers taking part in a shotgun start at Mundare’s Whitetail Crossing Golf Course. The tournament always raises money for causes picked by the Reeve in Lamont County. This year, Reeve David Diduck decided funds raised should be used to support Ukrainian refugees displaced by the conflict in their home country and now living in several communities across Lamont County. While the final amount raised had not yet been totalled, it is estimated to be around $25,000, raised through the golf entries, 50-50 draws, mulligan draws and other fundraising programs during the day. The winning team fired a 16 under-par score and included some players from the MD of Opportunity. Second place, also at 16 under par, was a team from Southfort Chev in Fort Saskatchewan. As a sponsor of the tournament they also offered a two-year lease on a truck as a hole prize. The most honest team with a score not publicly broadcast was Lakeland MPs Shannon Stubbs’ foursome.

“Business is still business,” she Nicholson, stated.who has two grown children and three grandchildren, said when her kids were younger she served on her neighbourhood community league and did the various volunteer jobs around their activities. She’s lived in Mundare since 2019. She plans to be very busy at this weekend’s Agri-Days, meeting the residents of the community.Going into the by-election she had heard about the town’s roads and fire department.“NowI’m beginning to learn what some of the community needs are,” she said. “I’m looking forward to taking my seat. I’ve been reviewing the previous minutes and learning what the council is working on.” Nicholson said she didn’t want to go out on a limb regarding the stop signs at the roundabout, but feels more discussion is Severalneeded.” comments regarding the pilot project have been posted on Facebook in recent days decrying the current east-west stop signs along 50 Avenue. “Is it logical?” she asked. “I have my opinion on it, but I think there needs to be some more discussion. No one has said anything directly to me about the roundabout.”Onething she does like about Mundare is its downtown core, which she feels is very beautiful and a highlight of the community.“Thedowntown core looks really amazing,” she said. “I’m really proud of the town and council for what they’ve done. I’m proud to be part of Nicholsonit.” describes herself as semi-retired. “I’m looking at dabbling into a few things, but right now what’s really important to me is being part of the community and being able to be home with my family.” Councillor Nicholson

BY JOHN MATHER Sandra Nicholson was surprised when she was acclaimed as the newest Mundare town councillor when nominations for the open seat closed Aug. 10. “I really thought some others would run in the by-election,” she said. Nicholson will take over the seat that became open when Eddie Shepel resigned as a councillor earlier this spring. “I’m part of this community and I think it’s everyone’s responsibility to become part of the community,” she said. She’s worked up north as a lodge manager at a uranium mine and feels that job and her further background as a real estate agent will serve her well as a rookie councillor.“They’re not that different,” she said. “There’s budgets, organization and making sure our fiscal needs are met.”

The nearly 70-year-old club was hit hard over the past couple of years, having to give up a steady fundraiser of operating the Karol Maschmeyer Arena concession due to the COVID pandemic. “With COVID we didn’t think we would be in there running a concession and we weren’t willing to gamble with the health of our people,” said Calder, who was president at the time. “It was a good fundraiser forTheus.”club, with approximately 20 members, elected a new executive Aug 11 with long-time member Don Driechel becoming the group’s newMeetingspresident.are the second Thurs of every month at Bruderheim’s Walker School at 7:30 p.m.

The policy of the plant was to encourage the use of good, clean seed.  At the time of its opening it stressed that “all seed cleaned at the facility would be up to the Canada Seed Act’s standard of number one or number two wherever possible.”Thetotal cost of the plant was Manager$130,000.BillSimes

The plant did turn a profit during the past year.Simes said because the plant is a seasonal job it’s closed during the summerHemonths.added with the farms getting bigger, farmers are hauling their seed in large Super B tractor“Whentrailers.this plant opened everybody brought their seed in a two-ton truck,” he said. “We can handle a Super B but it does take longer to unload. It used to be that everybody just farmed a few acres but everything has grown since those days.”

We put a lid on it!! Thanks to the kind and generous support of our community, we have been able to re-shingle the old train station so that we no longer have a leaky roof and damage being done to the interior. The Station Gallery and Arts Center board would like to thank all of the people who donated to our “Put a Lid on It” campaign during the past year. We raised almost $48,000, which doesn’t quite cover the cost of the project. For that reason, we have decided to continue our donation program and would sincerely appreciate any donations that continue to come in. We are also needing to upgrade the wheelchair access ramp, and do some other renovations on this old, but worthwhile building. As a nonprofit organization, we are continuously struggling to fund the upkeep of the station. Please know that your financial support means the difference between keeping the Station Art Gallery and Tea House open or having to close the doors. Donations can be e-transferred to vikingstationgallery@gmail.com , mailed to PO Box 997, Viking, AB Y0B4N0, or dropped off at the Tea House during the open season. Again, thank you for keeping the Viking history and heritage a priority in your lives.

In May 2019, our government identified just over 631,000 regulatory requirements and committed to eliminating one-third of this total. Since then, the government has removed four regulatory requirements for every requirement added, achieving a 26 per cent overall reduction, and 33 per cent reduction of inherited regulatory requirements since 2019. This includes a 60 per cent reduction of the red tape at Alberta Innovates.Manyof these changes have resulted in tangible benefits that put industry innovators in both core and emerging sectors in a better position to succeed, which is critical to Alberta’s long-term economic growth and diversification.Withhundreds of initiatives completed that cut red tape and modernize the regulatory framework, Albertans and Alberta businesses have saved more than $1.2 billion. Our red tape reduction efforts have eliminated more than 3,700 unnecessary requirements and the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses has ranked Alberta as one of Canada’s top performers on red tape reduction for the last three years.
