Huge crowd comes out to Bruce for the Stampede

Bruce was a hotbed of activity over the weekend as they put on another successful Bruce Stampede.

On Saturday, July 29, the local rodeo took over the grounds. Many took part in different activities, before the slack performance began later that evening.

Sunday, July 30, was the big day. The stands were packed right up to the brim to watch some of the biggest names in rodeo compete for some hard earned winnings.

There were many locals in the crowd, but a lot of first timers had a blast, coming from as far as the United Kingdom and Ukraine.

Bruce made sure to put on a good show this year for the newcomers.

There were two halves of professional

rodeo events to the day, with a short intermission in between for everyone’s favourite rodeo clown, Ricky Ticky Wanchuk, to entertain the crowd.

Wanchuk was also named the 2022 Specialty Comedy Act of the Year for the PRCA. Event winners were: Bareback, Dantan Bertsch, 83.5 points on Big Stone Rodeo’s 29 Sassy Spurs; Steer Wrestling, Dalton Massey, 3.1 seconds; Saddle Bronc, Leon Fountain, 88 points on Northcott-Yule’s 91 Mary Lou; Team Roping, Brady Tryan/Calgary Smith, 5.0 seconds; Tie Down Roping, Erik Dublanko, 8.0 seconds; Ladies Barrel Racing, Lynette Brodoway, 17.43 seconds; Bull Riding, Jett Lambert, 86 points on Northcott-Yule’s 710 All Tied Up; Junior Steer Riding, William Hale, 78 points.

Thrills, chills and spills galore at Bruce Amateur Rodeo Patricia Harcourt Editor

The Bruce Amateur Rodeo provided spectators with thrills, chills, and spills galore as local competitors lined up to compete.

They were there to show off their skills roping, riding, milking and wrestling with livestock and other animals generally found on the farm.

Only this time, the person riding a cow or wild pony could be someone you know personally instead of a rodeo cowboy on a bull or a bronc.

That last kind of action took place the next day with Sunday’s Bruce Stampede.

At the amateur rodeo last Saturday, there was plenty to watch as well. It all started with the singing of “O’Canada,” and then the ‘The Cowboy/s Prayer” was recited.

Action kicked off with the Great Canadian Mule Race, always a popular attraction for the crowd.

Mutton Busting for the 4-6 year olds had everyone on the edge of their seats to see how the little tykes would do trying to stay atop a jittery sheep with a moveable coat.

Cow riding was a true thrill as people watched cows bolt out of the chute while trying to buck off the rider. The announcer remarked that the girls riding in the event did as good as the boys in this one.

The six-year-olds and under had great fun with the Stick Horse Race.

They ran to the clown in the middle of the arena and then home again.

In Kids Calf Tying, 14 and Under kids, with teams of three, raced to be the first team to flip their calf and tie it up..

Then the Wild Cow Milking event ramped up the show as teams of three raced to be the first to milk their cow.

The Bloomer Race was also a wild and crazy event for ladies only,18 years and older. Teams of three competed to be the first to put bloomers on their calf.

During intermission the crowd was treated to some trick riders from Wainwright showing off their skills while riding a fast paced horse.

During the Wild Cow Race, teams of three compete to be the first to get a rider on and ride across the line.

Then the Kids Calf Scramble for 8 years and under and 9 to14-year-olds was full of racing action. The first to pull the ribbon from the calf won the events.

Smiles and chuckles from the crowd were obvious during the Greased Pig Scramble as two groups: 9-14 years and 8 and under, competed and had a lot of fun doing it. The first to pull the ribbon from the pig won the prize in both groups.

The finale for the afternoon was the kids Wild Pony Race, as children 8-12 years old competed in team of three to try and ride their wild pony.

Bruce Stampede Parade a huge hit

The day couldn’t have been more perfect for a giant parade in a quaint little hamlet like Bruce. After the pancake breakfast in the morning, the streets filled with people of all ages, eager to see the parade as it wended its way down main street before heading to other streets where cars and people were also lined up along the parade route. The Bruce Stampede Professional Rodeo followed after the parade on the Stampede Grounds across the highway.

Cows on the loose and other animal complaints in Viking On July 24, police received a complaint of a dog attacking other dogs.

The complainant stated while out with his dog an unleashed dog attacked his dog and complainant.

This matter is still under investigation.

That same morning, police assisted the Town of Viking with parking offences. The offences will be referred to the bylaw officer.

That afternoon, police were advised of a vehicle that was broken down on Highway 26. The registered owner attended and removed the vehicle.

That same afternoon, police received a complaint of a vehicle driving below the speed limit; the vehicle appeared to have a child with a hand out the window. Members did not locate a vehicle matching the description provided.

Later that afternoon, police received a complaint of cows along the highway. The owners of the animals were contacted.

On July 25, police responded to a neighbour dispute. Neighbours were disagreeing on the property line and trimming of trees. Both parties were advised to arrange for a survey to be completed to determine the property line.

On July 26, police were advised of a subject on a vacant lot and the subject appeared to be yelling.

The subject was located and spoken to and there were no concerns noted

for the individual.

That afternoon, police received a complaint of a motor vehicle collision.

Police were advised the vehicle had collided with a tree. When members arrived, there was a subject located in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Medical staff were assisting the subject, members also assisted and the subject was transported to the hospital for further assessment.

That same afternoon, police received a complaint of an impaired driver. A subject had attended a business appearing to be intoxicated and staff observed the subject drive away. Members were unable to locate the vehicle.

On July 27, police responded to a complaint of suspicious activity. A hose was observed attached to the exhaust of a vehicle and entering a holiday trailer. Members spoke to the owner of the holiday trailer, and were advised they were attempting to extinguish a bee nest inside the trailer.

On July 29, police received a complaint of suspicious activity at a property. A trailer with motor sport equipment was observed entering a property. The caller felt the property may be stolen but there was no indication of any offence occurring.

That afternoon, police received a complaint of concern for animals. The caller is concerned for the

Two men were captured last week after Viking RCMP received a report that shots were fired at a residence north of Bruce.

The shots resulted in someone on the property receiving an injury to the hand.

Police were notified at 6:52 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, that a vehicle had entered the property in question. Shots were fired from the vehicle hitting someone on the property in the hand before the

vehicle left.

A search was begun to find the vehicle using several investigative units of the RCMP including Eastern Alberta District Crime Reduction, Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit, and several surrounding police detachments.

Aerial surveillance was conducted with the help of the Edmonton Police Service Air 1.

A short time later the suspect vehicle was located and disabled, causing it to hit the ditch.

On July 30, police responded to the health centre to assist with an aggressive patient.

Members along with the Alberta Health Services peace officer assisted hospital staff with the patient until the subject was calmed.

That same morning, police received a complainant of a breach of a court order. The subject advised they were concerned the order would be breached during an event that was occurring. Police spoke with all parties involved and all concerns were addressed.

Later that morning, police received a request to attend a property and assist with the retrieval of personal property.

Members spoke to all parties involved and arrangements were made for the

property to be retrieved.

That afternoon, police received another request to check on the wellbeing of a subject that has not been heard from.

Members attended the residence and spoke with the subject; members had no concerns for their wellbeing.

During this time period,

police also dealt with several motor vehicle collisions involving deer.

They also issued violation tickets and warnings for various traffic offences.

JOHN’S RANT Time to change the way our economy is being structured At what point does our society become unsustainable?

This question has been much on my mind lately, as I watch the woke left extremists and sympathetic governments give large sums to victims and victims aid groups rather than supporting projects that will build and make a more productive society.

And I lay much of the blame for this on our rapidly changing technology and our ongoing race to embrace it.

Many years ago, it was stated the advent of computerization would create a fourday work week.

Well we’ve evolved past that by leaps and bounds and the results are on the verge of becoming a complete breakdown of our society as we know it.

Several years ago computers started replacing tellers in banks and check out counters in department stores.

Look at the auto industry where robotics has replaced the majority of the assembly line workforce.

Now in the name of climate change, governments are going to force everyone to drive

electric vehicles within the next decade.

I read an interesting report on said electric vehicles last week.

Firstly, battery production causes a lot of harm to our environment, which we are apparently trying to protect.

Electric vehicles, as they are produced, currently cost much more than conventional gas or diesel vehicles.

This, according to the report, has two benefits for our society.

It allows the elite to purchase electric vehicles, while the lower middle class and below will be forced to resort to shanks pony or bicycles to get around. This will help reduce society’s carbon footprint and will create two distinct classes those with and those without.

Now the majority of those without will have already lost their jobs and way to earn a living to advancing technology.

So they can’t afford a vehicle. And we know as housing prices skyrocket they can’t afford a home.

So how will they survive?

Well in most major cities they are turning

to addictions and living on the streets in shelters or in the ubiquitous tent cities popping up all over.

Yet our government throws money at them through either payouts in unemployment, welfare or various programming cheques.

And where does that money come from?

Taxation? And who pays the taxes? These same people receiving the money are part of it.

No matter how nobly intentioned all these programs are, economically, in the long term, it just isn’t sustainable.

Governments of all stripes rather than throwing money away with no return, should reflect back on the depression era ’30s.

The U.S. government embarked on major civil works projects which created major dams, bridges and buildings which in turn strengthened steel building industries, manufacturing sectors, and others.

It put people to work.

The government didn’t give them a choice.

Work became mandatory.

And the U.S. became a world superpower

for the decades that followed, with people enjoying a positive lifestyle in financial comfort.

Now, obviously there are those who will fall through the cracks and will need the support of a caring society and that’s fine.

But letting technology kill off jobs and create a two tier society isn’t the way to move

our world ahead as a society. Nor is the government pandering to them, offering financial support, but not requiring those receiving it to become productive members of society.

Viking discusses flowers versus street repairs Patricia Harcourt Editor

Viking Council discussed beautification versus street repairs as points to consider regarding a proposed tender for hanging baskets and planters to beautify the town.

The issue arose at the July 17 meeting under ideas and discussion for the future development of Troll Park, and the 2023 town flower tender draft.

Deputy Mayor Jamie Buttner brought up the town’s need to address water and sewer upgrades that he felt trumped the need for flowers.

But Councillor Cindy Lefsrud said: “We have other things we need to do, too,” and the cost of the flowers were not prohibitive in her estimation.

“Flowers are very important to a lot of people,” she said.

But Buttner repled that the town needed nice streets, too, adding: “To me it’s do or die.”

“Take the flowers off of main street and what are you left with?” asked Clr. Lefsrud.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Doug Lefsrud did not specify the cost for the flowers but recognized that the issue of buying flowers to beautify the town was one of the first roadblocks he encountered as the new CAO. But he added: “This is a big budget,” referring to the town’s annual budget, and flowers are already included in that budget. And he agreed with Councillor Clint Nearing that Troll Park “absolutely needs freshening up.”

Lefsrud also agreed with Clr. Lefsrud about the

need for flowers on main street as part of the tourist attraction for the town.

“Money put into flowers and hanging baskets is good for tourism,” he said, and attracts people to the community while being an affordable option.

And he thanked resident Ron Erickson for all the work Erickson has done over the years while recognizing there is “a lot of work there,” that needs to be done. CAO Lefsrud said the town needs to talk to Erickson about the work that is required in the park.

He said that concerns have been expressed by public works about water pooling problems, the need to upgrade the Viking ship, and weed and quack grass control.

Clr. Lefsrud wanted to put the flowers to tender while waiting to see the results of the Troll Park’s attendance and comments that are usually available at the end of September.

Buttner agreed that council could “proceed from there” regarding the tender depending on these results.

Clr. Lefsrud also said that CN Rail had grants that the town could apply for to beautify the park, which is owned by the railway company. She estimated grants might be available ranging from $10,000 to $25,000.

“We’ll make a decision once council is whole again after the end of September,” said Buttner, referring to the upcoming by-election for a mayor and councillor taking place that month.

Butter resigned his councillor position the following week to run for the mayor’s position, leaving a by-election also necessary for the vacant council seat.

CN crossing at Jarrow proves contentious at county council Patricia Harcourt Editor

The county having to pay maintenance costs for another railway crossing again proved a contentious issue for Beaver County Council at their July 19 meeting.

The discussion concerned CN Rail’s Mile 167.5 Wainwright crossing at Twp. Rd. 462 where a new double track has been built. The crossing is located in the Jarrow area east of Kinsella, and lies in Division 5 at the county’s east end.

Councillor Barry Bruce (Division 4) took strong exception to the county having to help pay for CN’s infrastruc-

ture maintenance for yet another crossing.

His motion was to direct administration to seek a legal opinion on whether or not the county is obligated to pay for CN’s infrastructure at that location.

“I think if we get a legal opinion and win with this one that we wouldn’t be bothered with another crossing (request in the future),” he said.

But Councillor Dale Pederson, who represents Division 5 where the crossing is located, did not agree, noting: “Transport Canada sets the rules so I’m not in favour of it.”

“Where is Transport Canada?” asked Bruce.

“Why don’t they come to the party?” He suggested these officials should come and justify why the county has to subsidize a corporation that makes millions of dollars.

“I see no rationale in paying for a rich man’s lunch,” he said.

However, the motion to get a legal opinion was defeated.

Bruce then asked for a recorded vote on the next motion, which called for entering into an agreement with CN to share maintenance costs for the Jarrow crossing at 75 per cent for the railway authority and 25 per cent for the road authority.

Irma Fire and Rescue hosted a village-wide water fight on Saturday.

Lots of fun was had by the residents and fire-

fighters. Thank you for the fun entertainment.

Gratton Coulee hosted a very successful Car Show on Sunday. There were about 100 vintage cars and trucks on display.

Our deepest sympathy to Maureen Currie and family after the passing of Keith Currie at the age of 88. He is also survived by sons Ian and David, daughter Leigh Maxwell, son-in-law Ron Rodgers and seven grandchildren.

A luncheon to remember Keith will be held at the Irma Curling Club on

August 26 at 11:30 a.m.

Al and Ruth Jamison are delighted with their grandson’s performance at the North American Indigenous Games. Rain won gold in javelin, silver in discus, and bronze in shotput.

Congratulations to the Irma Tigers! They are intermediate B Men’s provincial champions after winning in Calgary on the weekend.

Hrabec (Division 3) said: “I understand where Councillor Bruce is coming from.” However, Hrabec said he has seen “a drastic change” in the working relationship between the county and CN of late.

“We have a better relationship now,” he said, with progress made in areas like the whistle cessation issue.

But Bruce pointed out that the county didn’t get whistle cessation for nothing. “Residents had to pay,” he said. “We’ve paid for that.”

He added: “CN makes money because they go through our county and we’re paying for their infrastructure.”

He cited the fact that Beaver County is one of the few jurisdictions where the rail line passes all the way the county. This makes the

county liable to pay for maintenance and other costs at the many rail crossings. that are in the county.

“Many other counties have one crossing or no crossings,” he said, so they are paying far less in railway crossing costs.

Bruce also said that

the railway tracks running through the county from east to west mean that people are constantly waiting at railway crossings for the trains to pass by.

The vote ended with the motion passing 4-1 with Councillor Bruce the sole person to be opposed.

Local officials attend Bruce Stampede parade

County council conveys infrastructure priorities through MLA The Bruce Stampede Parade was a fun time for all to enjoy on Sunday morning Patricia Harcourt

Beaver County Council put together a list of the county’s highway and other infrastructure needs at the July 19 meeting.

The list was the result of a request from Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, said Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1).

Smook said Lovely’s July 13 email wanted the county’s “top three road priorities,” which would then be forwarded to Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen.

Councillors also indicated there were other needs considered priorities, including bridges and water/wastewater projects, which they also wanted to include.

The paving of Secondary Highway 870 north of Highway 14 was the first road project to be named, and became the top priority

on the list.

The project falls within Councillor Dale Pederson’s Division 5, and he quickly put it forward as the most important road priority for his area.

Pederson said the paving of that portion of the road “would assist in the movement of traffic from the northeast to the south (of the province),” by bypassing Highway 619 and the bottleneck of traffic that takes place at Viking.

He felt this priority “might have a chance,” having been advocated for so many times in the past and has received letters of support from the counties of Minburn, Flagstaff, and Wainwright.

But the greater impact would be to alleviate the poor road conditions and dust created by the gravel hauling in the area.

“It’s misery for the ratepayers and other res-

idents when they haul gravel from there,” he said.

Infrastructure Projects Continued from BCC1 Councillor Barry Bruce also noted that the highway is paved once it goes into Minburn to the north and jurisdictions to the south of Beaver County.

“I think we’ve been left out in the cold,” said Bruce. When Smook asked which should be the top priorities, Bruce immediately replied that S.H. 870 should be one.

Previous administrations had also tried to get that portion of S.H. 870 paved, and were told it couldn’t be done due to the low traffic counts.

But the county said the low traffic counts were due to the poor road conditions caused by the gravel haulers.

Bruce echoed that sentiment July 19: “If those roads were paved there would be a lot more traffic,” he said.

“Pave the road and watch the traffic flow.”

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) agreed that “if you go to the end of the two roads (into other jurisdictions) they are paved.”

He also agreed the 870 should be included, noting: “It’s been on the list for the last five years.”

Smook called the paving of 870 “a great idea,” then council discussed the need to pave portions of Secondary Highway 854 and 857 south of Highway 14.

It was added to the list along with the widening of Secondary Highway 834 north of Tofield. The 834 requires this work as it acts as a wide load corridor for large loads usually coming north from Hwy. 14.

The Kinsella Lift Station was an “ask” from the county for a provincial water/wastewater grant.

Chief Administrative Officer Kayleena Spiess told council that the upgrade to the Kinsella station is one project “that needs to be done,” and was hopeful of getting a grant for this.

The county is also asking the province for a Water for Life Grant to do a water management study.

And the final request was for funds from the STIP grant to do four bridge repairs and/or replacements.

Dan Blackie, GM of Transportation for the county, said the province could approve all four bridge requests, or none or them; he also recommended using bridge culverts for these projects.

Council passed a motion to approve the list of priorities for infrastructure and forward it to the MLA and Minister Dreeshen.

Beaver County’s new economic development plan passed Patricia Harcourt The county’s new economic development plan was adopted by Beaver Council at its July 19 regular meeting.

The plan had been reviewed the previous month by the Governance and Priorities Committee (GPC) where members provided feedback, Rob MacMullen, economic development officer, stated in his report.

“The Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) has also reviewed and provided feedback on the plan,” said MacMullen.

As a result, there was minimal discussion at the meeting. However, Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) offered an amendment that the plan include, under “Logistics” (Page 17) Highway 36 in the list of

Pederson said that Hwy. 36 intersects Hwy. 14 in his division and rivals other local highways in importance.

“Highway 36 is important, it should be listed as a major corridor,” he said, noting that this highway has the connectivity to other pavement to take drivers to Los Angeles.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) stated he agreed with Pederson that Hwy. 36 should be added to the list in an amendment.

The motion to accept the plan with the amendment to add Hwy. 36 to the list of important transportation corridors was made by Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1), and passed.

Chief Administrative Officer Kayleena Spiess stated there was “a lot in the document,” which would be conveyed to the public via the county’s meeting high-

major corridors in the region.

Logistics includes transportation, distribution, and warehousing, stating: “With strong transportation corridors and networks in the Beaver region and surrounding area, low cost of land, competitive tax base, and tax incentive programs, the county can look to focus on securing logistics industry investment.

“Often these industries look for low cost of operations, availability of source products and connectivity to the major highway networks.

“The county has a great opportunity to compete in this industry,” states the plan before listing the following highways: Hwy. 2 (Canada/Mexico Corridor), Highway 1 (East/West Corridor), Hwy. 43 (Alaska Corridor) and Hwy. 14 (heavy haul local corridor).

The EDC provided a synopsis of what the plan entails going forward in the county highlights: “The plan identifies focus areas, outlines targeted strategies, and develops resources to attract investments, support local businesses and create an environment for businesses to grow and succeed.

The ultimate goal of the plan “is to make the most of our strengths, overcome challenges, and create a bright and successful future for everyone living and working in the county.”

The plan will concentrate on four focus areas considered important foundational pieces for success, and expected timelines associated with the execution of the plan.

“Ultimately, investments in

a project, development, region, or industry is done under the premise that there is a return on that investment,” states the plan’s introduction.

The focus areas of this fiveyear plan include speed to market (a private sector value driven by investment return), shovel ready (land ready for development or construction), areas of opportunity (unique assets that can be capitalized on for current and future growth) and diversification (growing other industries besides those with strong local value).

The EDO, the advisory committee, county administration and elected officials will all have a hand in the unfolding of the plan’s strategy and outcomes in the next few years for economic growth and development.

Over the summer we have been working to upgrade the following roads: TWP RD 490 from HWY 36 to RGE RD 124 CAREY RIDGE ESTATES TWP RD 502 from RGE RD 205 to CAREY RIDGE ESTATES TWP RD 492 from RGE RD 172-190 HWY 854 from HWY 14 to TWP RD 500 These locations will soon begin to receive the second layer of chip seal and there may be delays as work crews direct traffic in order to work safely. There will be many loose rocks after the second chip seal layer is applied and speed limits will continue to be reduced on these roads until the final sweep is complete. Beaver County's goal is to provide a healthy, injury free work environment for all employees, contractors, visitors and general public.

There are potential hazards to the public and vehicles during the construction process. This can include heavy machinery, dust or mud, road material such as gravel, asphalt coatings and rock chips.

We apologize for the inconvenience that road maintenance and upgrading causes, but the same roads that receive the most traffic also need the most maintenance. Three local golfers to represent Zone 7 at Alberta 55 plus Summer Games Patricia Harcourt Editor

Three local ladies from the Viking area are heading for the Alberta 55plus Summer Games August 17-20 in Brooks to compete in golf.

They played at zones in St. Paul on June 16 and won the right to represent Zone 7 at the upcoming games.

Susan Lentz qualified in the Calloway 55-64 age group; Pat Sevcik qualified in the low gross category in the age group 65-74; and, Karen Cumming qualified in Calloway category in the 75 plus age group.

Pat has qualified four times before and says Karen has qualified “at least two” times previously. And Susan has now qualified the first time she has competed.

“I’m still working so I just do normal golfing,” says Pat. “I don’t go terribly often, just once or twice a week.”

The three will have a chance to prac-

tice on the golf course before the competition.

“We typically golf the course the day before to get acquainted,” she said. Then their golf competitions take place August 18 and 19.

“If we qualify we’ll go to the Canada Games in Quebec next summer.”

And the competitions are just part of the fun.

“It’s a good time. It’s amazing to see the age groups and the participation you’re never too old.” For instance, there are 80 to 90-year-olds playing ball and running track at these games.

But she said “golfing is fairly low impact,” and hopes to continue playing “as long as I can swing a club.”

She golfed as a child with her parents and then took it up again about 20 years later and has continued ever since enjoying her sport.

“To me, it’s my own game. I’m not competing with anyone else, just myself,” she said.

County approves funds for security system upgrade Patricia Harcourt Editor

Beaver County Council approved a tender from 2020 DSS Inc. for security system upgrades and monitoring of county-owned property.

“We are doing our best to protect the county and trying to be proactive,” said Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1), prior to the vote.

The decision came after a closed session portion of the July 19 meeting when council heard an RFD presentation by administration concerning the security system proposal.

After coming out of session, a motion by Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) was passed.

The motion was to accept

the security system upgrade tender at a cost of $274,420.50, as well as an initial annual 24/7 security maintenance and monitoring service costing $15,592.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) said that, although the tender was slightly over what the county had budgeted for the system, he would still support the motion.

Vialta Lodge Chatter Marion R. Cottrell July was a busy month for Vialta residents willing to board the Handi-Van or follow in their own vehicles. Manager Wanda Lefsrud hosted a barbeque at Rust Koulee, Lefsrud’s beautiful property overlooking a deep and wide coulee north of Viking.

The weather cooperated and delivered a lovely day to be outdoors for the residents to enjoy and appreciate Wanda’s thoughtfullness.

On July 13 a number of tenants enjoyed a visit with friends and family at Extendicare.

Even though you may require more care than Vialta can provide, you are not forgotten.

Sunday afternoon, July 16, the Handi-van loaded up and headed over to the Cloverlodge Stampede Grounds for interested seniors to watch the Chariot and Chuckwagon races.

I expect that got some competitive blood circulating!

Sunday July 30 was another opportunity to breathe in fresh air and horse-smell at the Bruce Stampede Parade.

July 25, ice cream floats were enjoyed in the Gazebo. The country tour scheduled for July was cancelled due to rain and I hope no one complained about the rain!

It has been rescheduled for sometime in August and will include ice cream for participants.

The residents were also treated to Joe Petras’ entertaining. Always an enjoyable afternoon.

Mick Kushnerik was scheduled to perform on July 28 but had to reschedule for Satur-

day, July 29. We enjoy his music no matter what the day!

Some Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. U-Tube Comedy Hour featuring Carol Burnett and Tim Conway has been tickling funny-bones in the Atrium. They are always good for a laugh!

Tuesday, August 1, the Summer Fun Kids will be spending time with the residents. August 18 a barbeque lunch in the Gazebo is planned.

One day in August, the date yet to be determined, Vialta, Holden and Tofield lodge residents are going to meet at the Holden Campsite, sharing refreshments, memories and stories.

Sounds like a good time.

August 21, the third Monday of the month, a group of women from the United Church will be arriving at 10 a.m. to meet with the women of the Lodge. They always come up with something interesting.

We are sorry to report that Gloria

Petrowski and Edith Cookson have had to move on to a higher level of care. All the best to both of you.

Birthdays for August are Ellen Loveseth on August 1, Annie Naslund on August 4, Connie Fornal on August 15 and Wilda Lindsay on August 24.

Viking Barrel Racer at Bruce Stampede

Viking local barrel racer, Karli Haeberle, took to the Bruce Stampede Pro Rodeo to rip across the barrels on Sunday, July 30. The day was packed with many pro events, with the bleachers full to the brim with fans from as close as Bruce and far as the United Kingdom there to cheer competitors on.

Former Irma resident named President of Lions Clubs International On July 11, 2023, former Irma resident and Irma School graduate, Dr. Patti Hill, was sworn in as the fifth international president of Lions Clubs International at their annual convention in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Hill has thirty years of experience as an educator and psychologist. She

also champions the rights of children and youth who are deaf and/or blind. Patti has served on the Alberta Premier’s Council on Persons with Disabilities.

She joined the Edmonton Lions Club in 1990 and has served in many official capacities with the organization. She learned that this is a global association of clubs

that are serving in nearly every country on earth with the goal of making the world a better place.
