Lions Club’s Show & Shine draws large crowd to Tofield BY KARI JANZEN The Tofield Lions Club held its 19th annual Heritage Classic Car Show on Monday, August 7. Many people filled Main Street for the car viewing. The 227 entries, up from last year’s 138, stretched nearly four blocks. People came from all over Alberta to participate in the Show and Shine, including Evansburg, Lougheed, Athabasca, and even one person from Grande Prairie. There were more than 15 categories for people to register in, and first and second place trophies were awarded for each category. Jim Warren, director of the Tofield Lions Club, said that when registration opened, people were lined down the street waiting to register. “People had those pandemic years to work on their vehicles to get things up and going. We heard that we were the only car show around this weekend, so that’s why we have a good turnout. “I think it’s a really good thing for the town. It really puts us on the map and shows off our community,” Warren said. Lions Club president, Darryl Romaniuk, said that compared to last year, the amount of registrants was exceptional. “We had a good car show. It was overwhelming from last year and it was still outstanding,” Romaniuk said. The Show and Shine is one of the main fundraising events for the Lions Club. “For the last couple years, it’s been basically our only fundraiser,” Warren said. Romaniuk said this year the 50/50 draw reached over $900. Lions Club members have been busy in preparation for the event, and were out and about working at the concession, selling 50/50 tickets, and tallying votes. “The Lions Club is in desperate need of volunteers and members. The way that we can put this on is by having a viable Lions Club. We’re getting older, and people are slowly leaving us, so we
need a big influx of new members,” said Warren. Before the Show and Shine began on Monday, the Tofield Golden Club put
on the pancake breakfast at the Seniors Drop In Centre. “It’s a big fundraiser for the Golden Club and it helps them out because we
bring lots of people to town, and most of these people, because they get here early, go for the pancake breakfast,” Warren said.
