Irma Days funfilled festival for all ages Patricia Harcourt Editor
Irma Days was a funfilled kaleidoscope of events sponsored by the Irma Agricultural Society with activities for one and all to enjoy. A week full of activities in which to participate or watch kept the entertainment going thanks to an array of volunteers and organizations putting on the show. Curling events began with stick curling followed by the 36th Annual Summerspiel, a bonspiel like no other for people who enjoy curling year-round. Saturday kicked off many events including a pancake breakfast at the Irma Fire Hall put on by Irma Fire and Rescue. A giant parade at 11 a.m. saw the streets lined with parade watchers. The parade always has many bright floats and other entries and tradition has it going around the parade route twice in case anyone missed something the first time. Following the parade, the Irma Drop-In Centre provided a delicious beef on a bun luncheon.
Kids streamed into the Fairgrounds for Kids’ Zone fun and enjoyed activities like watching a balloon artist, participating in archery lessons, and playing in a giant suds pond and huge inflatables. Meanwhile, fun for the adults included the Irma Elks gun show at the Arena, and the Bench Fair at the Irma School gymnasium. As well, slow-pitch games and curling was available for any sports minded folks in the crowd. And there were two sittings for “High Tea” at the Irma Museum to honour famous “Company’s Coming” cookbook author Jean Pare, who was raised in Irma and passed away just last Christmas. On Sunday morning, an ecumenical church service was held at the school gymnasium with Pastor Wayne Neumiller and the Alliance Church officiating. The gun show, bench fair, curling and ball games continued throughout the day on Sunday, and the Food
with Flair food truck was available on the Fairgrounds for hungry patrons. The Kids’ Rodeo at the Fairgrounds is the final offering for Irma Days held on Monday, August 7 to round out the long weekend. It’s very popular with many locals and visitors turning out to watch the rodeo events.
