MLA defends mileage claims Jessica Littlewood wants to emulate former MLA’s lead JOHN MATHER Fort Saskatchewan Vegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood is vigorously defending herself against accusations she was exaggerating mileage claims in the constituency during the past year.

Littlewood will be reimbursed $34,800 for mileage expenses claimed between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018. The province pays 43.5 cents per km meaning Littlewood drove approximately, 80,000 km during the past

MLA Jessica Littlewood

year. She suggests that by traveling throughout the riding she is just doing her job to the best of her abilities – covering the riding as much as she can going east as far as Lavoy, north to Andrew and south to Tofield. The constituency is almost 5,000 square kilometres in size. “When I was first elected it was shared with me that Jacquie Fenske (the previous MLA) was everywhere in the community and I wanted to emu-

late that,” stated Littlewood. “I will go to my constituents rather than have them come to my office. “Often we have farmers who want you to see their issue up close; we have seniors who with lack of internet and sometimes without transportation, need their MLA to come to their home to discuss their issues. “One of the things about this which has bothered me the most is people saying, ‘well do you have to go to so many ribbons cuttings … as if that’s all it is,” explained Littlewood. It’s so much more than that, she adds, saying the communities want her to see what they are about and show off the talents and progress they are making. “It’s engaging with people and seeing what matters to them,” she said. “When I go to these events, I have people tell about the knee surgery they’ve been waiting for, or people having trouble with maintenance payments they’ve be waiting for.” She says the rural residents aren’t sure about phoning her office but they do open up to her face to face.” “Nothing replaces face to face interaction,” she said. She added one of things she found wrong with last year’s boundary commission hearings was the commissioners assumed people would email or text their problems to the MLA and, “that’s just not the reality of being a rural representative if you’re doing your job.” Under the rules set out by the members’ services committee, MLAs representing rural ridings can claim up to 80,000 km in mileage for driving personal vehicles within their constituencies, providing they submit fuel receipts.

FROM WHERE I SIT:

Anything else?

BY HAZEL ANAKA Through this renovation project of ours we’re learning (again) that you get what you pay for. We’re also old enough to have learned some of those lessons the hard way. No one is bequeathing their Ikea furniture to their beneficiaries, yet for most of us it serves the purpose, for the price, for the circumstances of the time. Most of us do better when we can do better. But that doesn’t mean we don’t sprinkle the odd Ikea organizational or décor item in when we can. When we were newlyweds a hundred years ago we learned not to try

to save money on paint. Or mattresses. We know that composite materials are very heavy and prone to damage. We know antiques have provenance and quality and will outlive us. What may not be as apparent (at first) is that many manufacturers create their items in a range of price points and quality. The Maax showers sold at big box stores are not the same as those at a plumbing store. Apparently, there are three levels of quality and the prices reflect that. We’ve already learned that about pot lights. When we did our kitchen four or five years ago, we

bought our Philips LED pot lights at Home Depot. You know LED, the ones that promise to live longer than you will. We’ve had one die prematurely and another that does a strobe light show every so often. Of course, when we tried to exchange the dead one, we were told they were discontinued and past the point of store warranty but they replaced it anyway. I’ve since learned from a lighting ‘specialist’ that the box stores get fixtures by the container load and once they’re sold, they’re sold. The next container will have a new version. We’ve all gotten used to wanting the best price,

accepting the disposability of goods, and cynically just replacing things when they fall apart or underperform, or when we tire of them. The other problem when making product choices is that you’ve no sooner picked something that there’s something new and improved to consider. Buying something new to the market may give you bragging rights but does it stand up in the long run? Think about the improvements to laminate flooring since it first stormed the market. We haven’t yet ordered our vinyl siding when just this week we saw steel siding that’s not much

more money than vinyl and less than ‘hardee board.’ Where does it end? Should we bite the bullet and buy the LED integrated vanity mirrors or buy regular mirrors and wall sconces? FYI, my exhaustive research says that mirror side lighting for tasks like shaving and makeup are far superior to overhead light bars which cast

Opinion In praise of Seniors

Last week I was very graciously invited to a local seniors assisted living home where I was able to sit down with the residents, watch and listen in on their activities (I will not mention the location because I don’t want to single anyone out or even infringe on their privacy). To those who were there with me, thank you for the great evening and the royal treatment. Now I know how celebrities feel. One of the activities the group participated in was reading the local newspaper - ours in fact. Ten of the residents gathered around a large table listening in to the group leader who chose pertinent information from stories and then went around the table discussing the topic. What a wonderful idea, turning a solitary event like reading the news into a social atmosphere of learning, sharing and relaying opinions. I was so impressed. The group leader was warm and inclusive to everyone. He always encouraged the quiet people to share, and made note of someone who he knew may have some special interest or insight on the topic. It should be no surprise to anyone that these seniors were still very inquisitive and pro-active in making the world a better place. After all, they built this place - and most everything observable you can be assurred one of them, or someone they knew, had hand in its inception. It was pretty amazing to hear them talk about their pasts, and then just beam when talking about exciting events in their lives like their marriages. I could not believe how interested they were in me and my career in the newspaper business. How flattering. They were led into discussion on things that affect them now that they are older. Some residents don’t drive while others might not have access to relatives who still care for them regularly. Not everyone has the best of relatives, after all. Simple things like getting to services or events in Edmonton, that most take for granted, can be a very trying for a senior with no help or vehicle. The best thing I learned is that I hope I can live as long as these people, many now in their 90s though some sure don’t look like it. Imagine a life being so well spent. Not surprisingly I had a respectful, loving relationship with my grandparents who are all gone now, but I could definitely picture their eyes when I spoke with these seniors. It was a different world for them. It was a world of hard work, honesty, pride, toiling, love, laughter, friendship, and never expecting anything for free. Although they live together in these assisted living apartments now, enjoying one anothers’ twilight years - they are very much alive and they deserve to be respected for who they are and once were. It’s always a good reminder to treat people as you wish to be treated yourself, as you will soon be in a very similar facility - if you are lucky. Kerry Anderson

LETTER TO THE EDITOR MLA proud of her travel around area

Dear Editor: To be honest, finding out I’m the MLA who drives around rural Alberta the most made me feel proud. Not proud of me, but proud of my constituents. I will wear that 80,000-km expense claim as a badge of honour. Whether it’s the six grads I attended during grad season, accompanied by six high school awards nights, or the nine ag societies that host rodeos, or the three Legions I serve, or the 12 municipal councils that I work with, rural Alberta continues to show me how busy it is. Not to mention all the Zabavas… if you don’t know what that is, Google it and then attend one! Living in my Fort Saskatchewan apartment and working between three offices, I can put on a lot of kilometres. It’s part of the reason I bought Betty, my 2005 black Chevy Silverado from a friend. Betty is sturdy and reliable, and

allows me to feel a little safer driving these highways with 4 wheel drive, day in and day out, no matter the season. Getting out is my number-one priority. Since my first day as your MLA, I have believed that this constituency deserves a different kind of politician. One who shows up all the time. One who comes to you. I want to be an MLA who will really see what is going on with those weeds around the oil-and-gas lease on your farm, which some corporation walked away from. This is the right thing to do. I have been at the kitchen table of families as the forests smoldered around them, and I have surveyed the damage of floods on our secondary highways so that I know what those affected are asking their government to do to help, and so they know that I truly care. That matters to me. And I’ve heard from my constituents

that it matters to them, too. Transparency is key which is why I am glad that these expenses are posted online. Every dollar that funds our Vegreville and Fort Saskatchewan offices goes to staffing, outreach, and coming to you so that you know what I am up to, because no one should think that their representative isn’t working hard for them. In response to concerns raised by some of you about my mileage expenses, I am happy to report that I have personally gone back through my calendar for the past year and calculated 80,115 km of travel related to my work as your MLA. I am proud to – and I will continue to – represent your interests and come meet with you wherever you are. Jessica Littlewood MLA for Fort SaskatchewanVegreville

Road closures due to flooding soon to be open JOHN MATHER There are still a few roads closed due to the spring flooding in Lamont County, but they should be reopened within the next couple of weeks. Range Road 550 directly west of Elk Island National Park has been closed but County Roads Maintenance Supervisor Gerald Thorowsky said it should be open soon. He said there isn’t much base on the road where flooding occurred between the County side of the road and Elk Island National Park earlier this year. “It’s a very sandy base which is almost all gone,” he said. “We’ve

been adding clay to support the base for the next few years.” He added the road is scheduled for a complete rebuild in the next couple of years. Range Road 160 near Whitford Lake is still closed as crews rebuild it’s base.

“We’re really busy and working hard to get the roads all reopened soon,” explained Thorowsky. “There are many people on holiday right now, so that slows us down a little.” The last road still closed is Township Road 532 between Range Road

The silo was lifted, by a 500-ton crane, from a cylindrical stand and hoisted to a ring where it was welded and bolted into place, said Graymont plant supervisor Dave Czank. The half-day lift went smoothly, although it took a full day to assemble and disassemble the crane. The silo will receive quick lime, which will be screened and treated to manufacture hydrated lime once the expansion in commissioned in mid-September.

Huge crowd enjoys Model T Races at Bruderheim JOHN MATHER The jaunty geriatrics in their jolly jalopies brought yesteryear back to life at the Model T races in Bruderheim, July 27. Close to a thousand people turned out to watch the races, time trials, and gaze in awe at the display of classic cars at the Agriculture Society grounds. “We had about 14 race entries,” said Matte Hotte, organizer of the event. But they weren’t all geriatrics behind the wheel of these rickety racers, and all were young at heart. “I was the youngest driver and I’m 29,” said Hotte. “Our oldest competitor was 91.” This was the second year the event had come

to Bruderheim. It featured time trials, six qualifying racers and a finale, which featured all the cars. “We couldn’t establish a final winner because it was too dusty,” explained Hotte. He said his wife spent much of the week at the grounds setting up for the event. She finally suffered heat stroke and missed the meet. This led to a shortage of help and there was no one to run a water truck to keep dust down on the track. Breakdowns took toll “There was some damaged equipment – one car broke an axle, one had a rock knock and another quit. We eventually almost ran out of cars.” Hotte explained there

The Flagstaff Scottish Club is pleased to present:

is a small circuit for the Model T races in Alberta with meets in Sundre, Drumheller, and High River. It was started about seven years ago. “Bruderheim is the north race which we put on,” he said. “My wife and I are learning as we go but we’ll work the bugs out.” Hotte also brought a car show to the grounds with 16 cars from the Edmonton Antique Car Club. He said with other

vehicles on display there were 80 to 100 cars, motorcycles and trucks. The original Model T races used to be a mainstay for summer entertainment in Alberta starting 1941. Many racers cut their teeth in Model Ts “The first race was in Calgary as a Lions Club fundraiser,” said Hotte. “Those original races had more than 100 cars and they ran 200 laps.” He said crowds blos-

somed up to 10,000 and soon there was a race in Edmonton and sponsors started coming on board. “There were a lot of names that came out of those events that became big names of Alberta racing,” he added. “Gavin Breckenridge, Don Tupper, Duke Foster, George Lemay and Stan Reynolds all raced Model Ts.” Hotte said races used to be held in Borden Park in Edmonton and when

the horse racing fraternity decided they didn’t want the motorized set using their track the model Ts moved out to north Edmonton at Speedway Park. He said one of the current racers from Calgary found an original racer and to mark 75th anniversary of the first Calgary race they organized an event in High River. According to Hotte it just grew from there. Cont. Page 7

Model T Continued from Page 6

He adds there are 25 to 30 Model T racers in Alberta right now. The vehicles are found in the around fields province where they are just rotting away. When they’re fixed up the Model Ts can reache

speeds of up to 60 miles on hour per Bruderheim’s 1/2-mile track. He adds his organizing group wants to continue building the event. “What we need is some more cars to add to the heats,” he said. “And then we’ll add more side events to make it as family friendly as we can.”

Ken Hotte’s Model T racer, finished just days before racing July 28, shows there is not much more than bare bones to these racing machines.

During the time trials, old fashioned leather helmets and a shirt and tie with coveralls were the fashion of the day.

In keeping with the period theme, this old fashioned wrecker was on hand in case any of the racers ran into trouble on the track.

It may look like a horrifying smiling face from a Stephen King thriller, but the reality is that it’s the front end of a 1959 Buick at the car show, part of the Model T races in Bruderheim July 28.

2. Ken Hotte races a Model T racer originally built in the 1940s by Bob Villetard. The car last raced in 1951 and its rebuild was completed just days before the July 28 meet.

These Model T racers leave a wake of dust as they head towards the first corner at the Bruderheim Agricultural Grounds, July 28. A total of 14 racers competed in the second annual Model T races, which attracted close to 1,000 spectators.

Model Ts race through the dust during the July 28 races. A total of 14 racers competed in the qualifying heats and grand finale.

Registration $20.00 Road construction is progressing on the highway project on secondary Highway 831 in front of the Lamont schools. According to Lamont CAO Sandi Maschmeyer the Alberta Transportation project consists of replacing curb and gutters and then adding a new lift of pavement. She said the school division is also repaving the parking lot at the high school. Both projects should be completed by September. “They have the curb done on the east side and work on the west side of the highway is underway,” she said. Lamont also has 52 and 53 Avenues dug up as they enlarge a water line and repave the roads. The area under construction is progressing well, said Lamont Public Works Foreman Rick Chernyk. He said roads are being kept open to the hospital during the construction period. The work is being done between 52 St. and 54 St.

Lamont Council Continued from Page 9 “So the motion I made was invalid,” Harvey asked. He was told a motion had to be made with a specific timeframe. “We did have instructions to get further information, which we are still working on that,” said Nielsen. Harvey said the motion was made to review the setbacks regarding the land use by-law. He wondered if council is to give direction to administration a motion must be made and it should be shown in the minutes. Mayor Bill Skinner said if the motion wasn’t made in the acceptable form the minutes should still reflect the essence of what was said. “It’s unfortunate, but we still need to capture that a motion was made whether it was incomplete or not,” he said. That seemed to satisfy Harvey. New top cop to visit Council was informed Staff Sergeant Mike

McCauley had been promoted to Inspector and will be the new officer in charge of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP detachment. The letter informing council of the change added, McCauley would be speaking to council shortly as the detachment works with all the communities in its area. Mayor Skinner said council looked forward to sitting down in a meeting with the new detachment commander.

the area. Administration will look into trying to set up a meeting. Skinner asked if they should look at discussing policing with the appropriate officials, but Councillor Harvey suggested it would be better to meet with Inspector McCauley first to find out what was planned for policing in the

Lamont area. “Well, we could find out from the Inspector whether there’s any area the RCMP would like us, as a municipality, to bring to the provincial officials,” replied Skinner. Council decided they would rather meet with McCauley first which may not happen before the AUMA convention.

“Do we have any issues we need to discuss with the Municipal Affairs minister,” he asked council. Receiving no requests to meet, council did ask if a meeting with the Transportation minister could be arranged. Councillor Taylor said it’s always good to meet with the transportation officials to find out what was planned regarding regional transportation and any changes to the heavy haul corridors in

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column, and box. Each number can only appear once in each row, column, and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
