Viking Christmas Celebrations Patricia Harcourt Editor

Viking's Community Christmas celebration was a festive occasion for everyone on Friday, Dec. 6, with a day full of activities designed to light up the holiday season. A community lunch at the Carena was the occasion for a hearty turkey dinner with all the trimmings. The Ratte family entertained with classical and holiday music while a Stuff the Truck - Food Bank Drive took place outside the Carena. Viking Mayor Jason Ritchie welcomed everyone, and County Councillor Dale Pederson brought greetings from Beaver County. Also on hand was Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely who promised to come back in January to visit Viking Council. Pastor Alvin Sorenson of Golden Valley Lutheran Church led the crowd in thanksgiving prayer before the meal began. A cheque presentation of $500 was made to Viking/Beaver FCSS Director Dawn Chrystian from the Town of Viking's Mayor Ritchie and Councillor Judy Acres. "The Town is sponsoring a family of four for a Christmas hamper and presents, plus a family of two for a hamper and gifts," said Ritchie. The highlight of the festivities was the Parade of Lights in downtown Viking. Eighteen entries included a group of horses for the first time this year. Judges this year were Andrew Sorenson, and town councillors Debbie O'Toole-Balaban and Clint Nearing. First place went to Viking Esso, second place to Vialta Lodge, and third place to Home Hardware. Then Santa Claus made his jolly appearance towards the end of the parade, laughing, talking, and shaking hands with the crowd of people lined up along Main Street. Following the parade, a tree lighting ceremony took place at Troll Park, with lighted candles and prayers for the upcoming Christmas season. Everyone headed for the Carena to listen to carollers and music by Saskatune Jam. ATB Financial sponsored free pictures with Santa, and Vision Credit Union handed out free hot dogs and pop. On the ice, many enjoyed free public skating courtesy of the Town of Viking. For a few hours, the Carena rocked with music, visiting, and the festivities of the season to top off a great community Christmas celebration.
