Viking Christmas celebrations kick off with giant parade of lights

Patricia Harcourt Editor Viking-ites came together to celebrate the spirit of Christmas with a giant parade of lights and other fun activities.

A Christmas market was held at the hall last Thursday sponsored by the Viking Health Care Auxiliary. The hall was filled with many beautiful and handmade items and the auxiliary offered a beef on a bun for hungry shoppers to enjoy.

The Christmas Lights Parade on main street Friday evening was a major

event as vehicles lined up to take in festive looking floats, vehicles, and displays. Santa Claus was there along with the Grinch, both a hit with the youngsters.

Judging for the parade resulted in the following winners being declared: First Place - Viking Veterinary Clinic with a float full of displays and live animals; Second Place - P&H Elevator with Buddy the Elf and Santa’s Workshop; and Third Place - Viking Home Hardware with beautifully lit up truck pulling a sleigh display with Grinch included.

After the parade were the fun centred

activities at the Carena, where Vision Credit Union staff served free hot dogs, chips and a drink; and a photo shoot with Santa was provided by ATB Financial for many eager families.

Many took part in the free public skating indoor playground. Kids displayed magical faces courtesy of Tracy’s Fantasy Faces and, with the milder weather, wagon rides by Christine and Sheldon were available to view the Christmas lights on display around town. Carena Kitchen was open and provided many a delicious meal or snack for those attending.

tained in the lobby and mixed it up with traditional carols, along with western, pop and blues selections with a holiday theme.

The light display contest closed at midnight the same evening as the celebrations. Winners will be announced at the upcoming Christmas Luncheon in the Carena lobby on Friday, Dec. 15.

The RCMP and Town of Viking will be collecting food bank items on that same day.

And the Viking School will be presenting its Christmas concert with two performances on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

There were approximately 45 vendors at the Irma Christmas Market last Saturday in the Irma School. The auditorium was filled with people looking for that special gift for a loved one.

RCMP want everyone to get home safe this holiday season The holiday season means joining with family and friends, sometimes with an alcoholic beverage, to visit and celebrate time together.

But Alberta RCMP says it is important to “still keep safety in mind,” even while indulging.

“This December, and always, remember to enjoy the holidays responsibly,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull. “If you are attending a party, make sure you have a sober ride home, or a safe place to spend the night.

“Last year, in Alberta, RCMP jurisdictions responded to 233 fatal collisions of which approximately 25 per cent involved alcohol or drugs,” he said. “Alberta RCMP also removed 7,573 impaired drivers from Alberta roadways.”

Turnbull said this was the equivalent of 20 impaired drivers a day.

On Dec. 2, the Alberta RCMP participated in a National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day

by carrying out traffic safety enforcement initiatives and check stops across the province. It resulted in 23 impaired drivers removed from roadways on this one day of heightened enforcement.

Of these 23 impaired, 17 received immediate roadside sanction (IRS) fails and four received IRS warns. Two motorists received sanctions for failing to comply with breath demands. As well, all 23 head their vehicles seized.

Of this group, there was one GDL driver, a commercial semi-truck driver and another driver on a suspension having lost his license for an earlier impaired driving iRS. RCMP are trying this year to keep the roadways safe with the hashtag #DecemberToRemember.

“To all those choosing to drive sobre this holiday season, thank you,” said Turnbull. “With your help, Albertans are able to get home safely to their loved ones.”

Not impressed with Premier’s Dubai trip Dear Editor: I have just read about half a dozen "reports" of Smith's Dubai trip and what it's estimated cost is to Albertans (e.g. A Budget Your Trip to Dubai is ??), but Bill just handed me some Best January 2024 Departing Edmonton to Dubai, Flights for roughly $3,000 per person!! (Politicians always fly first class!) I don't know what Smith paid in December. Not very encouraging!

But, your readers may find some of this to be of political interest...

The reported numbers in Danielle's entourage has varied from "Anonymous" (Alberta Politics; Dec 3/23) when "asked about" how many people were joining her on her trip to Dubai, when Danielle replied "only six people," (not true!) And, then there's the reported modest 26 (which many of us found totally "outrageous!”), to the Toronto Star's estimate of 150 (Gillian Stewart, Nov 28), and Andrew Leach's (U. of A.) 43 ("all nominated by the Govt of Canada")... to the "hundreds" referred to in (a Postmedia news story last Tuesday.)

So take your pick!

I also checked out what Graham Thomson had to say. (He's usually pretty reliable.)

But, he didn't cite a number. He focused on why Smith was there... (i.e. Dec 5, 2023; The Tyee; "She is using COP 28 as a bully pulpit to show the anti-COP folks back home she'll fight Ottawa on any stage, be it provincial, national or international.")

Thomson also points out that our Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Guilbeault's, mission is "to cut climate warming methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by at least 75 per cent over the next six years," which Smith immediately called "dangerous and unconstitutional" and "in a personal attack suggested Guilbeault wanted to grab international headlines to benefit his post-office career."

What Smith fails to acknowledge (since she is not there to discuss "shared federalprovincial responsibilities,") is that, in the past, the Court has ruled "when it comes to climate change, the environment is a shared federal-provincial responsibility." And, "Alberta's Methane-Reduction Plan was introduced by Alberta NDP Leader, Rachel Notley, while she was Premier (2015)" the year Notley went to Paris for COP 21, as part of a delegation of Premiers, led by P.M. Justin Trudeau. Notley was honoured for Alberta's "new climate-change strategy, that included phasing-out coal-fired power plants," (in Graham Thomson's article cited above) which, ironically, Smith's UCP current Government has failed to follow!

Hopefully, this faux pas will be noted by the COP28 Host, Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, who happens to also be the CEO of the United Arab Emirate's national oil company ADNO ... along with the many other Oil Executives attending this gathering.

Perhaps Smith's grandstanding like this publicly, at COP 28 will cause her demise... but hopefully, at least her lack of honesty/integrity.

For example, the combination of forcing Alberta to get rid of the RCMP, and furthermore wasting our tax dollars to somehow reject the Federal Retirement Plan, without the promised Referendum, while Smith hints the Government (i.e. you and I) will help pay to clean-up our roughly 170,000 abandoned oil and gas wells (37 per cent of Alberta's total well sites, plus the innumerable "Orphan" ones (no owners) randomly spewing Methane into Alberta's atmosphere.

We can also hope that causing Albertans to see (on an international stage) how shallow, inept, and deceitful Smith is... plus, now her lack of Provincial leadership, is destroying Alberta.

Axe the tax!

On Dec. 5, Senators voted on an amendment to Bill C-234 that essentially removed the exemption from the carbon tax for farmers, defeating the entire purpose of the Bill and adding costs to the food we need that is getting more expensive.

For the last decade, the PM has repeatedly claimed that the Senate, and those he appoints to it, are independent. Well, this weekend proved otherwise. He and his socialist Environment Minister were busy employing a campaign of bullying and pressure to force his Senators to kill this carbon tax for farmers.

On Decc. 6, I stood in the House of Commons to call the Prime Minister out for his lies.

“We know he bullied his senators.

The Prime Minister lied, and his minions continue to lie.”

The first point of the truth I brought up is that the carbon tax is a tax plan, not an environmental plan. And while this disproportionately affects rural Canada, the reality is if you tax the farmer who grows the food, tax the trucker who ships the food, you are indeed taxing the people who are buying the food.

That is why Conservatives have introduced, and have been working hard to pass, Bill C-234.

This not only affects folks in East Central Alberta, but all Canadians who are paying more to heat their homes, feed their families, and even put a roof over their heads. Conservatives are fighting for the carbon tax to be axed.

And the Liberals refuse to acknowledge these facts.

The second is when it comes to the Senate, while the Liberals often claim the Senate is “independent” to avoid

scrutiny, the secretive process the Liberals have employed to select Senators has resulted in these so-called independent appointments that include Liberal insiders, donors, and folks who vote for the Liberals with very few exceptions.

The fact that the PM and his Minister bullied Senators into not supporting this bill is proof that the Prime Minister lied. And to top it off, the Liberals refuse to appoint Senators from Alberta who have been duly elected.

Over the next few weeks, Conservatives are using every Parliamentary tool at our disposal to persuade the Government to work for the best interests of Canadians, to bring home a country that empowers our people to earn powerful paycheques, develop our resources, build homes, restore trust to our institutions, and, in advance of Christmas, to enable the prosperity needed for folks to put food on their tables and gifts under the tree.

At the end of the day, I will not apologize for telling the truth, will continue to stand up for common sense, and am proud to be a part of the team of Conservatives from across Canada who are ready to get to work and restore the promise of what Canada can be.

WORD ON THE STREET Multiple suspicious vehicles called in all over east Beaver County On December 4, a request was received from a peace officer to assist with a vehicle that had fled from the officer.

The vehicle was noted to be travelling in reverse on the highway.

Attempts were made to stop the vehicle and it fled from the peace officer. Members from Viking responded to assist and were unable to locate the vehicle.

On December 5, a resident of Bruce called in a complaint of a break and enter to a shed in their yard. Members spoke with the complainant who stated that nothing was taken from the shed, there was damage to the lock and the door was left open.

There was no surveillance on site or witnesses.

Later that morning police responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle. The complainant advised of a vehicle parked on Range Road 120 with two male occupants outside the vehicle; the complainant advised there was a knife in the visor of the vehicle.

Members located the vehicle and conducted checks. Nothing suspicious was found, the subjects had run out of gas and were waiting for a friend to bring them gas so they could carry on.

That same morning, police received a request to conduct a wellbeing check on a youth, as she had not been in school for several days.

The caregiver of the youth was located and spoken to, and she advised the youth was currently too sick to attend school and that is the reason she has not been there.

Also that morning, a complaint of a suspicious vehicle driving around Kinsella was received. The complainant advised he cap-

tured a suspicious vehicle on his surveillance camera driving around Kinsella. No reports were received of criminal activity in the area involving a vehicle noted on the surveillance camera.

That afternoon, police responded to a dispute over the ownership of a dog. Members spoke to the parties involved and advised them that it was a civil issue.

That evening, police responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle on Highway 14.

The complainant advised he located a vehicle near an oil lease site. The complainant spoke with the driver who advised he was having issues with his vehicle. The female passenger appeared to be having trouble keeping her head up. Patrols were made to the location but the vehicle was not located.

On December 9, police received a request to conduct a wellbeing check on a youth. The complainant advised that his daughter lives in another province and has been having problems contacting her.

When police spoke with the caller they were advised that everything was fine, he was able to contact his daughter and there are no concerns.

That same morning, police received a complaint of mischief. The complainant advised that sometime overnight a hole was punched in her gas tank and fuel syphoned out.

This matter is still under investigation.

That afternoon, police responded to a complaint of a suspicious person walking on the train tracks. Members located the subject, who was determined to be a youth. The youth stated he was just taking pictures of the train. Due to

the weather conditions and it becoming dark he was given a ride home and left in the care of his father.

During this time, police also dealt with numerous minor traffic collisions and issued several violation tickets for various traffic offences.

“Christmas Concert with Onel” a humorous introspective of holiday offerings Patricia Harcourt Editor

Those attending a concert on the weekend were treated to a humorous introspec-

tive of holiday offerings.

The Viking School Grade 12 class presented a “Christmas Concert with Onel,” Saturday afternoon at

the Kinsella Hall.

Onel Potgieter is known as a singer from the Viking area who has performed over the years for both local and regional audiences.

She mixed traditional songs and favourite tunes of the day with humorous anecdotes about her life while remarking gently on the irony intrinsic in many

situations.

Some of the songs she sang were: “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Not So Silent Night,” “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” “Emmanuel,” and “The Christmas Shoes.”

Many of the songs she sings are reflective and thoughtful renditions that go straight to the heart, such as the song, “My First Christmas in Heaven.”

The show also had

kids’ crafts and games available during the performance, and refreshments and treats were served as well.

The concert is a fundraiser for the Viking Grade 12 class to help them organize their high school graduation coming up in 2024.

People were also encouraged to bring an item for the local food bank, which distributes monthly baskets and special Christmas hampers every year.

Irma U15 Aces Charlie Broadhead has a massive eight point game Kerry Anderson These are some of the results from Minor Hockey League games held recently. (Please note that scores and scoring is taken from the websites, and some game scores and scoring is dependent on proper league entries).

Irma U11 Female Aces (0-6-2) skated to a 2-2 tie at home with Vermilion on Saturday at Irma Arena. Irma’s Hailey Allen scored the tying goal 6:29 into the third frame. Abby Larson scored the other Irma goal (1g 1a). Kenzie Petersen got the win in goal.

Irma U13 Female Aces (7-3-0) dropped a 9-3 game against visiting St. Paul on Saturday.

Runa

Erickson (2g 1a) and Cadence Hollar (1g 2a) both led the way.

Eldlynn Newton picked up two assists.

Irma U15 Female Aces (3-4-3) Charlie Broadhead (5g 3a) leads the team in scoring so far this season with eight points in eight games.

Irma U11 Aces (8-40) dropped a 6-4 game at Lloydminster on Saturday. Aces tied the game up 13:56 into the third period but two late goals by Lloyd secured the win.

Jeremiah Beer got a hat trick (3g 1a) and Logan Leskow also connected.

On Sunday at home, Aces beat Mallaig 10-6 let by Jeremiah’s five goal game (5g 1a).

Other scorers were;

Macoy Tomlinson (2g 1a), Anson Banks (1g 1a), Rhett Pfisterer (1g 1a), Calder Oracheski (1g), Logan Leskow (1a), Ryder Clark (1a), and Ethan Verreth (1a).

Rylan Hryhirchuk and Ryder Clark shared the win in goal.

Viking U11 Gas Kings (6-4-1) beat Vegreville 10-4 on Saturday at the Carena. The game was tied 4-4 going into the final frame before the home team exploded for six straight. Peyton Bird and Matthew Lampitt both had five point games (3g 2a).

Other scorers were;

Kaelen Hakes (1g 1a), Stetson Shepley (2a), Taylor Docksteader (1g), Tyson Crocker (1g), and Easton Morken (1g). Taylen Place got the win in goal.

Irma U13 Aces (11-41) won a 7-5 game in Marwayne on Dec. 6.

The teams were tied five different times in the game until Aces connected twice in the third for the win.

Gauge Petersen got a hat trick (3g 1a). Other scorers were; Kohlten Anquist (1g 2a), Parker Leskow (1g 1a), Trey Gulbraa (1g), Keetley Gulbraa (1g), and Levi Larson (1a).

Conall Rue got the win in goal. On Sunday at home, Irma beat Hughenden 7-4 with Kohlten Anquist having a five point game (1g 4a). Other scorers were; Parker Leskow (2g 2a), Trey Gulbraa (2g 2a), Gauge Petersen (2g), Keetley Gulbraa (2a), Knox Smith (1a), and Matthias Beer (1a).

Hayden Smith got the win in goal.

Irma U15 Aces (4-73) hit the road on Friday, tying Lloydminster 5-5. Up 4-0 in the middle period and 5-2 early in the third, the home team fought back for the tie.

Irma had five different scorers in the game; Jax Mackay (1g 2a), Nixon McLaughlin, Hudson Clark, Owen Allen, and Hollis Martens.

Atley Mackay and Prior Fenton picked up assists. Tate Crawford was in goal. On Sunday at Vermilion, Aces were on the losing end of a 12-2 game.

Hudson Clark scored both Irma goals.

Nixon McLaughlin got an assist.

Irma/Mannville U18 (2-5-3) were scheduled to play at Vermilion on Saturday but no score was posted at deadline on Monday.

OBITUARIES

Lilla Catherine Ash Lilla Catherine Ash passed away quietly on October 29, 2023.

She leaves to mourn her husband of 63 years Robert, daughters Ellen, Marilyn (Lionel Colbert), Patricia (Bruce) Chern, and son Robert (Bob) (Kelly) Ash. She leaves her eight grandchildren Coleman Myren (Jamie), Blake (Bre) Myren, Brett (Susy) Chern, Erin Chern (Tate), Jessica (Parker) Palichuk, Gena Ash (Duece), Kristen Ash (Jake), great-grandchildren Logan, Aiden, Alaina, Wyatt, Payton, Brooke, Jayden, Jax, as well as many nieces, nephews, and close family friends and neighbours.

Lilla was predeceased by her parents, Tony and Phyllis

Rabby, Robert and Mary Ash, brothers Dickie and Henry, sister-in-law Lorna, sister Evelyn, and brother-inlaw Peter.

In keeping with Lilla's wishes, a graveside service was held on November 12 with a lunch served afterwards along with much visiting.

Anyone wanting to donate in Lilla's memory can be made to the Viking Health Centre Auxiliary or a charity of one's choice.

The family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support through this difficult time.

Multiple Christmas themed events taking place in Holden on weekend Patricia Harcourt Festivities are still going on full steam in many places in Beaver County including in the Village of Holden.

This year there will be a return to the Holden Community Hall for a Festival of Trees celebration on Friday, Dec. 15.

The event is sponsored by Viking/Beaver Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Village of Holden and the Holden Economic Development Committee.

The hall will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for people to come in and view beautifully decorated trees on display.

But that’s not all - there will also be hot chocolate to enjoy; and the Holden Rural Academy will be selling desserts.

Anyone with a crafting ability can help to make ornaments, and the kids can write letters to Santa.

Registration for a decorated tree is $5 with the funds gathered going to the Christmas Hamper Campaign. Anyone can enter this fun event and bring a personally decorated tree to show off and add to the festival’s lineup.

People are encouraged to “come and see the trees,” and then vote for their favourite tree.

The village has started a “Look for Holden the Elf” contest on Dec. 1. If the elf is spotted around town, a picture of the elf can be submitted to the village via

Council to consider draft operating and capital budget at meeting Patricia Harcourt Beaver County will be considering the adoption of the draft operating and draft capital budget for 2024. The operating budget will include a 2% increase in the municipal mill rate.

This increase does not include the fire protection requisition from Beaver Emergency Services Commission (BESC) and the policing requisition from the province.

The report added that, “council will make a decision regarding the final mill rates along with final budget approval in the spring.”

If adopted at the Wednesday, Dec. 13, regular council meeting this week, it will be an interim budget only and will be revised over time as information changes or is clarified.

“Changes can/will be made to the budget as new information becomes available and the assessment base is finalized,” stated the report to council by Ryan Arndt, general manager of corporate services.

The recommendations for council to consider include a 2024 interim operating budget with total expenditures of $23,689,490, leaving taxes of $14,668,679 to be levied.

Administration also recommends the approval of the 2024 capital budget with expenditures of $11,460,987 and taxes of $1,780,987 levied on county taxpayers.

One major shift being proposed is to end the need for county council’s approval of all major capital purchases in favour of

administration getting this authority. It would require waiving the current purchasing policy giving this authority to county council.

The Municipal Government Act requires the passing of an interim budget by the end of the year.

“Approval is being requested so that capital projects can proceed in a timely manner,” stated the report, naming weather and supply chain challenges as factors in decision making.

Administration states that waiving the purchasing policy would increase efficiency, stated the report.

“A waiver will enable administration to proceed with capital

expenditures efficiently, take advantage of time sensitive purchases, and move the capital plan forward,” explained the report.

“This waiver is limited to purchases that do not exceed the approved budget,” said the report.

“Should a capital expenditure exceed the budget, administration will seek council’s decision regarding the purchase.”

This change in purchasing authority was first proposed at the N o v e m b e r Governance and Priorities Committee meeting. If council approves the change, then council would be notified of any purchases made by reading the monthly administration activity

report.

Council has a new system for working out the budgets having received a 2024 budget binder to review before closed session budget meetings in late November.

Council was scheduled to hold open session budget meetings and discussion any items flagged by councillors. However, the meetings that were to be held over three days took place on

Dec. 6 only. At that meeting, a motion by Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec to cancel the Dec. 7-8 budget meetings was passed, and the budget was forwarded to Dec. 13 for final consideration.

Santa Day was a big success as the weather cooperated. People enjoyed the large variety at the Christmas market, the turkey shoot, and the bon-

fire, hot dogs, and hot chocolate, and the tractor and wagon rides around town. Kids got a chance to meet Santa and get a treat bag. Good food was enjoyed at the Long Branch, and at the New Horizons Centre sponsored by the United Church Ladies. There was a full day of minor hockey and the Irma Aces defeated the Hughenden Jets 3-2 in an exciting game to cap off the day. We appreciate all the volunteers who made the day possible.

The school band concert will be held on Thursday, December 14, at 7 p.m.

Everyone is invited to attend a farewell luncheon and program at the New

Horizons on Sunday, December 17, for Reverend Scott Reynolds and family as they move to Red Deer.

Potluck salads and desserts will be served at 1 p.m. followed by the program at 1:30.

Avonglen Church Christmas program will also be on December 17 beginning at 6 p.m. with coffee and snacks to follow.

The elementary Christmas program will be Wednesday, December 20, at 1 p.m. That evening will see the first annual Irma light parade followed by hot chocolate and free public skating.

We extend get well wishes to Don Ford who is recovering from surgery.

1. Represent the interest and concerns of the Vision Credit Union membership 2. Participate in policy and strategic planning 3. Monitor policy adherence 4.
