These divas definitely know how to make a lasting impression during the grande finale of the Christmas concert dress rehearsal on Dec. 12 at Bruderheim School. The concert was held later that evening, but the dress rehearsal was a great opportunity to work out last minute details.

Paintballers get big fines Men using bison as target practice given stiff penalty Michelle Pinon Editor

Zero tolerance. That's what staff at Elk Island National Park have regarding the use of bison as targets for paintball enthusiasts. The judge saw it exactly the same way and fined two Edmonton men $2,500 apiece for shooting bison with paintball guns. Both men plead guilty to the charges and were sentenced in court in Fort Saskatchewan last Thursday. A third man, from out of province has since been issued a summons to appear in court.

Park Superintendent Stephen Flemming felt the punishment fit the crime and would hopefully serve as a deterrent. "The one thing I would say is that Parks Canada is very reasonable, but in this particular case, it's fair to say we have zero tolerance." Parks Canada staff began noticing paintball marks on bison back in the fall of 2010. There were around half a dozen incidents between then and March 17, 2012 when RCMP and Parks Canada staff saw two vehicles off-road in the fields in the park. They were pulled over and

charged with unlawful possession of firearms, disturbing wildlife, and off-road driving. Since that time there have not been any other incidents in the park. Flemming said he has never heard of any similar incidents in other national parks in the

country. EINP's herd is genetically pure and is the only conservation herd in all of Canada. "It's the population of choice for conservationists," added Flemming, who wants EINP to remain a safe haven for them.

Students sang, danced, acted, and played musical instruments during the afternoon performance. The play, The Mystery of Simon Shepherd, was a hit with everyone in the audience.

Town and LMHA agree in principle Michelle Pinon Editor

While nothing is carved in ice yet; the Town of Lamont and the Lamont Minor Hockey Association (LMHA) have agreed to move forward with a board advertising campaign for the arena. During a recent meeting, both parties decided to move forward with an agreement in principle, and will be ironing out the details over the next couple of months. All members of council expressed their willingness to move ahead with the proposal that would see LMHA procure advertising for the boards, they did say they would like to discuss the amount of the split at a later date. LMHA had proposed the proceeds would be separated with 90 per cent of the funds going to Lamont Minor Hockey and the remaining 10 per

cent would be deposited into a fund held by minor hockey. Some examples of projects LMHA representatives Deb Eleniak and Brent Marler cited: "Would be, but are not limited to, heaters for players boxes, minor repairs, tools, signage and safety equipment. According to LMHA's proposal letter, "The 10 per cent would be utilized, in conjunction with the arena manager, to help offset small arena projects that would be beneficial to both parties by making the facility a better place for our children and visitors." Coun. Wayne Field said he liked the idea that minor hockey was willing to take on the project, and felt it would be mutually beneficial. "I like that you stepped up and came to council," noted Field. Coun. Steve Sharun shared Field's sentiments. Mayor Bill Skinner said he was glad

to see the idea come to fruitition as it was an idea that first came before council several years ago. "We expected it to come before council, but it didn't come to be," added Skinner. Coun. Gail Hrehorets said they would have to talk about the spilt (percentage of profits shared between the two parties). "Typically, it goes to committee to negotiate before it is brought back to council," said Hrehorets. Coun. Debra Dunsmore said the project would be a lot of work, but that it would be nice for the town to have.

Canonbie Construction makes generous donation to Bruderheim School library

SUBMITTED PHOTO

David Duguay, centre back, from Canonbie poses with students in the Bruderheim School library after making a large donation on behalf of the construction company. Employees raised monies through a couple of 50/50 raffle draws. The funds will be used to purchase new shelving and furniture for the library. Michelle Pinon Editor

Christmas came early for students at Bruderheim Elementary School. While Santa didn’t arrive with a sack full of toys, it was the next best thing when David Duguay arrived with a cheque for more than $6,870 on Dec. 5. The monies were raised through a couple of 50/50 draws by staff of Canonbie. “Here we are building a train loading station for Canexus, and have been building oil and gas plants around the country for some years now,” said Duguay, a structural superintendant with the company. “The school was chosen because it originally started from one of my crane operators, Glen Johnson. He had heard that the school was raising money for a new playground and decided to organize a pig roast to raise money and gather

us for a night out at the same time, but unfortunately we never raised enough money to even pay for the cost of the roast. So because here at Canonbie we are like a family, and we always try to support each other we felt bad for Glen’s effort not paying off so we decided to help by doing a 50/50 draw.” By the time the monies had been collected, the playground had been completed. But while on a tour of the school with principal Sven Danzinger, Duguay decided to invest the funds in to the library. “After spending the money on furniture for the school I realized that they could still use a few more tables and chairs, so I organized the second draw, and used the money to buy two more tables and some chairs.” Danzinger said he was surprised and delighted the school was chosen as the recipient of the donations. “Through the generosity of Canonbie staff, we

now have two new rolling library book shelf units, five new tables, two benches, and a table with rolling seats built into it,” noted Danzinger. Duguay isn’t sure how much longer they will be in the area, since the company’s contract with Canexus is coming to an end, but he was glad the company could make a positive impact in the community. Duguay hails from New Brunswick. He’s married with two children, and loves to help out his friends and neighbours by constructing projects out of steel. Welding is one of his favourite hobbies as well as quadding and sledding.

Opinion

Pay it forward I just can’t help it. But when I get the chance, I preach to my son about unselfishness. The willingness to put the needs or wishes of others before your own is something my parents taught me. They didn’t use words, they simply used actions to convey their message. My parents belonged to several community and church groups, and coached baseball, fastball and hockey teams. When I was grown up I would ask them how they had the time to do all that? They simply shrugged their shoulders in response. Actions were second nature to them. Last week, I met several more like minded individuals with the Lamont Lions Club. “It’s a matter of serving, and that’s all there’s to it,” replied one of the longtime members. The simplicity of his words, the importance of helping other people and the feeling of joy that comes with giving, was very touching and beautiful. Through the deeds of Lamont Lions Club members, I learned how people in the community would directly benefit. Through financial donations, the Kalyna Country Performing Arts Association will be able to provide a scholarship, and the Lamont Fire Department will be able to purchase more air tanks. During the meeting, members voted in favour of donating $250, proceeds from the club’s recent ham bingo, to Lamont Elementary School so students will be able to enjoy a nice Christmas dinner together. Besides recognizing the importance of these other groups and services they provide, one must recognize the hard work and commitment of the volunteers with the Lamont Lions Club who made it happen through their good works and deeds. People argue, even I struggle with making the time for other people’s needs and wants. But those good deeds don’t have to be grandiose to make a difference. It can be as simple as doing chores, taking someone to an appointment, visiting residents in the lodge or hospital, donating your time, talents in your child’s school, or making a financial contribution to a worthy cause. There are so many ways, small and big to make a difference. So when it comes to paying it forward, I hope other people in the community will look inside their hearts and decide to give a piece of it to others; because in the end isn’t it all about spreading goodwill? Prairie EMS receives accreditation Providing emergency medical care is an intricate and involved process with many stakeholders and key players helping to make things run smoothly. With over 23 years of experience providing such services, the folks at Prairie EMS have gained an intimate understanding of the challenges facing EMS providers. As an organization that values continuous improvement and provision of the highest levels of care, Prairie EMS has recently attained the Primer Level of accreditation through Accreditation Canada. “Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit organization that sets standards for health quality and safety, and accredits health organizations in Canada and around the world,” said Rob Hargreaves, General Manager and founder of Prairie EMS. “With roots dating back to 1917, Accreditation Canada has become synonymous with excellence in patient care.” Organizations that choose to pursue accreditation through Accreditation Canada are held to standards that meet or exceed established national benchmarks. Once an organization has been accredited through Accreditation Canada, continuous improve-

ment measures are put in place to ensure a consistent level of service is maintained while continually striving for the next level of excellence in care. Prairie EMS and its parent company MedWest began the accreditation process July 2012. The process of becoming accredited is a lengthy one, and over a year later, Prairie EMS achieved the Primer Level of Accreditation in September, 2013. Attaining the Primer Level of Accreditation was a lengthy process involving a variety of stakeholders and the development of the Prairie EMS accreditation team. “The Prairie EMS accreditation team was established to review and develop practices, policies, procedures and plans that are in keeping with Accreditation Canada’s Standards,” said Mr. Hargreaves. “After identifying and addressing areas that needed improvement, the accreditation team then arranged for a site survey to be performed by Accreditation Canada Site Surveyors.” The survey, which lasted three days, identified 89 procedures and practices which were measured for compliance against national standards. The surveyors visited Prairie EMS administration and three of seven response divisions. The survey involved a policy and

procedures audit, documentation audit, interviews with clients, management and staff, provincial authorities and medical directors. At the end of the survey, Accreditation Canada’s team provided a report with their findings and recommendations to the Accreditation Board who subsequently reviewed the results and awarded Prairie EMS with the Primer Level of Accreditation. “Once we received the final report and accreditation, we were very proud of our accomplishments and our involvement in the entire process. However, this is just the first step for Prairie EMS. We are now in the process of working towards full accreditation.”

Full accreditation involves further evaluation and implementation of all relevant Accreditation Canada standards - over 300 of them. This process also involves staff input through multiple online and site surveys of all of Prairie EMSí divisions. The scheduled completion date for full accreditation has been established for spring 2015. “Receiving this prestigious award means our organization is moving in the right direction, providing a comprehensive and high quality of emergency medical services in the areas that we serve,” said Mr. Hargreaves. “The communities which Prairie EMS serves will know and see that Prairie EMS is committed to and working towards provid-

ing the highest quality of emergency medical services possible and is committed to patient and staff safety.” The province of Alberta has implemented a Health Ministerial mandate stipulating that all emergency medical services in Alberta are accredited through Accreditation Canada by the spring of 2017. This mandate will help to ensure that all EMS providers in the province are delivering a consistent level of care across the board. The mandate imposed by the government of Alberta is one that we fully support as it will allow for a higher level of healthcare throughout the entire province. “However, this was not the motivating factor for us to pursue this accreditation. We are

eager to seek out areas of improvement so our service delivery and culture of patient safety continues to meet and exceed national standards. Attaining this level of accreditation would not have been possible without the involvement of our staff throughout all levels of the organization,” stated Mr. Hargreaves. “We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished through this process and look forward to what the future holds for our organization. We are confident that we’re moving in the right direction and this process validates our commitment to comprehensive, safe and efficient operations and client care.”

Staff members of Prairie EMS have a lot to be proud of after its accreditation.

Lamont County regional economic director updates council on progress and plans Michelle Pinon Editor

There's a lot happening, and Doug Sullivan predicts there will be a lot more happening in the future when it comes to economic development. Sullivan, executive director of the Lamont County Regional Economic Development Initiative (LCREDI), told county council during its Dec. 10 meeting there is a lot going on in the region and expects things to be just as busy in 2014. On the agricultural side of things, Sullivan said a company is looking at Vegreville to set up a wheat straw operation. With land prices at a fraction of the cost as larger centres, and access to rail lines; Sullivan said the region is ripe for economic development. For example, land might go for $20,000 an acre compared to $200,000 an acre in Leduc or Edmonton. Sullivan described Lamont County as the hole in the donut (the donut being the Alberta Industrial Heartland), and is working on rebranding efforts to better attract development in the region. "The next big project is area development plans for the urbans and have applied for a $250,000 grant." LCREDI has a link into the Alberta HUB website which ties into the Heartland and further into several different trade and transportation corridors. "Early in the new year we will be bringing on Twitter and Blogs which can be picked up on Smart Phones and IPads." Last week Sullivan said they came onto FaceBook, and will be taking advantage of more opportunities for advertising and promotion in the future. "One of the things we have to do is publicize the attractions," added Sullivan, citing tourism, recreational opportunities, and lot sizes as areas to focus on. As far as challenges goes, Sullivan said infra-

structure or lack there of, is something that can scare off investors. So while municipalities may not have the money to invest in infrastructure, Sullivan said, they are trying to put a service levy in place. With the increasing number of projects and people coming into the region, there will be more opportunities in the future. In other municipalities industrial parks have been very successful, and there is no question that adding more infrastructure will be needed in order to attract com-

mercial enterprises to the region. "Good housing options for potential employees and their families, as well as for temporary workers, is important to incoming businesses. Strategies need to be considered to meet this challenge." He does admit that raising awareness in the community is a struggle, but he is doing the best he can to attract new enterprises, promote and support existing businesses, as well as attract new permanent residents.

The Andrew Public Library now has a mascot, thanks in part to the board which launched the community wide contest back in the fall and to students who submitted their designs. The winning design belonged to Grade 8

student Addison Ng, who created a bookworm mascot. Ng said a bookworm came to mind when he thought of reading, and having it in an apple “that you give to teachers” was a fitting design. He also had various looseleaf pages outlining the various subjects incorporated into his design.

Heather Tait, chair of the Andrew Public Library board, said she will be sending the design in a digital form to a costume designer in the near future. Ng said he was very excited when he found out he won the contest and for his efforts, will be receiving a $200 cheque.

As to how Ng will spend the money, he said it will be up to his parents. Tait anticipates the mascot will be ready for its first public appearance in the Canada Day parade in Andrew, which is held in conjunction with Sport Off days.

In the Dec. 10 issue of the Lamont Leader (Chamber Christmas gala cutline), it was incorrectly stated that Gary Harrold was standing in for his wife Trudy who was unable to attend. Gary is a director with the organization, and his wife's name is Jocelyn. There was also a typo in Debra Krill's last name. Sincere apologies for publishing the incorrect information.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

2 - The Lamont Leader special Christmas edition, December 17, 2013

How’s your knowledge of Christmas movies? What would the holidays be without snowflakes falling outside, a mug of hot cocoa in hand, and a favourite Christmas movie on television? Television is full of feel-good movies come the holiday season. Choose from among classic flicks you have watched year after year or new movies vying for spots as soon-to-be favourites. Watching Christmas movies is a holiday tradition for many families. So much so that lines from popular movies are easily remembered and recognized. Those who can recite movies verbatim might enjoy testing their mettle with the following Christmas quiz loaded with memorable quotes from some holiday classics. Movie Quotes Quiz 1) “It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.” 2) “Uh, since the United States

Government declares this man to be Santa Claus, this court will not dispute it. Case dismissed.” 3) “If TV has taught me anything, it’s that miracles always happen to poor kids at Christmas. It happened to Tiny Tim, it happened to Charlie Brown, it happened to The Smurfs, and it’s gonna happen to us!” 4) “I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200 shot range model air rifle.” 5) “Bless this highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale. Amen.” 6) “Iris, in the movies, we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason, you’re behaving like the best friend.” 7 “Who gave you permission to tell Charlie there was no Santa Claus? I think if we’re going to destroy our son’s delusions, I should

be a part of it.” 8) “I want to wash my hands, my face, my hair with snow.” 9) “We’re not just doing this for us. We’re doing it for the kids. For every kid who ever sat on Santa’s lap. For every little girl who left cookies and milk for Santa on Christmas night. For every little boy who opens a package Christmas morning and finds clothes instead of toys. It breaks my heart.” 10) “We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It’s run by a big Eastern syndicate you know.” 11) “I fear you more than any spectre I have seen. But as I know your purpose is to do me good, and as I hope to live to be another man from what I was, I am prepared to bear your company, and do it with a thankful heart. Away in a Manger Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky And stay by my cradle til morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

Buying a real Christmas tree made easy Christmas trees strung with coloured lights and covered in ornaments and other trinkets are staples of the holiday season. Finding the perfect tree and decorating it is as much a Christmas tradition as egg nog and bad gifts from distant aunts and uncles. There is much debate over what tree is better -artificial or real -- but the fact of the matter remains that an artificial tree will not provide the aroma or experience a real tree can offer. Before you go out shopping at your tree farm or just up the corner at the Christmas tree lot, first measure the openings of your home

and the space where you will set up your tree. A tree out in the open, or beneath the 12-foot ceilings of a warehouse store will look small. But when that same tree is brought into your home, it can be immense. A measuring tape can help remove any doubt about the tree's dimensions. When selecting a tree, you want one that has been recently cut or is the freshest. If you're cutting the tree down yourself at a farm, it's easy to determine the tree's vitality. However, it may not be so apparent at a tree lot where trees may have been sitting around since right after Thanksgiving. Consider these pointers

when choosing a tree: • Fir trees tend to hold to their needles even when they start to dry out, making them ideal Christmas trees. • Examine the tree you like carefully. A good one will look healthy, be vibrant green and have a strong pine aroma. • If the tree has dry, brittle twigs, a musty smell or any sign of dryness or browning, you probably want to choose another as this one is past its prime. • Look for a tree with strong branches to hold ornaments. • The needles should be soft and flexible. They should not fall off easily if you run your hand

over boughs of the tree. Remember, a healthy tree can last several weeks if it is brought indoors freshly cut, making them ideal Christmas trees. They should not fall off easily if you run your hand over boughs of the tree. Remember, a healthy tree can last several weeks if it is brought indoors freshly cut and maintained with regular watering. Be sure to shake the tree out before you transport it home. This will loosen any dead branches and needles, which will make a mess of your car and home. Most tree lots and farms will wrap the tree in netting so that it stays condensed and portable for the trip home. Tie it securely so

you don't end up with an airborne tree on the roads home, which has happened to many people. Also, be sure to cut off an inch to two inches of the trunk off to promote good water absorption later on. When the tree is home, carefully bring it indoors (those door measurements will come in handy now). Make sure that your tree stand will fit the circumference of the tree's trunk. Do not shave the sides of the trunk to get it to fit or you risk compromising how long the tree will last. A cut tree first can absorb as much as 1 gallon of water 24 hours after it is cut. After that the general rule is that a tree needs approximately one quart of water per inch of trunk diameter. Adding special mixes to the water will not help it

last any longer. By following these tips you can ensure you have a beautiful and healthy tree to enjoy for the duration of the season.

Joyous May all your dreams come true this holiday season and beyond.

NORAD to track: Jets to escort Santa on Christmas Eve The Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Region is set to track and escort Santa Claus during his annual visit to Canada and has selected four CF-18 fighter pilots for the high profile job. They are LieutenantColonel Darcy Molstad, Captain Sébastien Gorelov, Captain Rich Cohen, and Captain Brian Kilroy. Lieutenant-Colonel Darcy Molstad and Captain Sébastien Gorelov of 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron, 3 Wing, Bagotville, Que., will conduct the first escort duties to welcome Santa into Canada off

Canada’s East Coast. As Santa transits into Western Canada, escort duties will switch over at Canada’s centre-point,

near the OntarioManitoba border to Captain Cohen and Captain Kilroy of 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron of 4 Wing, Cold Lake, Alta. Special NORAD SantaCams, positioned around the world, will take photos and video of Santa and his sleigh as he journeys around the

world. The SantaCams instantly download the photo and video imagery so that it may be viewed by children around the world on the NORAD Tracks Santa website at: w w w. n o r a d s a n t a . o rg on December 24. All related information will be available in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Mandarin. As NORAD has done since 1955, its Canadian Air Defence Sector Operations Centre at 22 Wing in North Bay, Ont., will alert NORAD when their radar and satellite

systems detect Santa approaching North America. Two CF-18 Hornet fighter jets from 3 Wing will launch to welcome Santa into Canadian airspace off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. As Santa zooms across Canada from east to west, two CF-18 Hornets from 4 Wing will then takeoff from Cold Lake to meet and relieve the Bagotville fighters of escort duty, ensuring Santa’s voyage through Western Canadian airspace is safe. On December 24, chil-

NORAD Tracks Santa Facebook page neared 1.2 million followers, and over 129,000 people followed Santa on Twitter. On December 24

alone, NORAD "Santa Trackers" answered more than 114,000 telephone calls and received over 9,000 emails over a 25 hour period. NORAD is a binational United States and Canadian organization, charged with the missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. Kitchen Sink Chocolate Chip Cookies There's a good reason fitness club memberships tend to spike come January. After a holiday season spent party-hopping and letting their diets fall by the wayside, many people look to the gym as the means to helping shed those inevitable holiday pounds.

Perhaps no food is more popular around the holidays than cookies. Cookies are as much a part of the holiday season as Christmas trees, long lines at the mall and kids searching the house for presents. For those with guests to entertain this holiday season,

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year It’s the most wonderful time of the year With the kids jingle-belling And everyone telling you Be of good cheer It’s the most wonderful time of the year (Wonderful time) It’s the hap-happiest season of all (wonderful time) With those holiday greetings And great happy meetings When friends come to call It’s the hap-happiest season of all There’ll be parties for hosting Marshmallows for roasting And caroling out in the snow (out in the snow) There’ll be scary ghost stories And tales of the glories Of Christmases long, long ago It’s the most wonderful time of the year There be much mistletoe-ing

And hearts will be glowing When loved ones are near It's the most wonderful time of the year, ooh ah Woah, there’ll be parties for hosting Marshmallows for roasting And caroling out in the snow (out in the snow) There'll be scary ghost stories And tales of the glories Of Christmases long, long ago It’s the most wonderful time of the year (most wonderful time) There be much mistletoe-ing And hearts will be glowing When loved ones are near (loved ones are near) It's the most wonderful time (wonderful time) It's the most wonderful time (wonderful time) It's the most wonderful time of the year Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

the following recipe for "KitchenSink Chocolate Chip Cookies" from Elinor Klivans' "The Essential Chocolate Chip Cookbook" (Chronicle Books) is sure to please. Kitchen-Sink Chocolate Chip Cookies Makes About 36 Cookies 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons unbleached all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 6 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 large egg 11/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup pecan halves 1 cup walnut halves or large pieces 1 cup blanched whole almonds, toasted and chopped roughly in half Position a rack in the middle of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line two or three baking sheets with parchment paper. Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt into a medium bowl and set aside. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar until smoothly blended, about 1 minute. Stop the mixer and scrape the sides of the bowl as needed during mixing. Add the egg and vanilla and mix until blended, about 1 minute. The mixture may look slightly curdled. On low speed, add the flour mixture, mix-

ing just until it is incorporated. Mix in the chocolate chips, pecans, walnuts, and almonds until evenly distributed. Use a tablespoon to drop well-rounded tablespoonfulls of dough (about 2 tablespoons each) onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing the cookies 2 inches apart. Bake the cookies one sheet at a time until the edges are lightly browned and the centers are slightly colored, about 14 minutes. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then use a wide metal spatula to transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. The cookies can be stored in a tightly covered container at room temperature for up to four days. Choices: You can add 1 cup of raisins, dried cranberries, or chopped dried apricots to the dough with the chips and nuts. White, bittersweet, or milk chocolate chips, or a combination, can be substituted for the semisweet chips.

The Golden Wrapping Paper Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little fiveyear-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. As money was tight, he became even more upset when on

Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox. Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!"

As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her. But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady," he said harshly, "when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside the package!"

The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full." The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger. An accident took the life of the child only a

short time later. It is told that the father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child

On Santa’s Team My grandma taught me everything about Christmas. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," jeered my sister. "Even dummies know that!" My grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her world-famous cinnamon buns. Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus!" she snorted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. Now, put on your coat, and let's go." "Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second cinnamon bun. "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's. I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and

crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just a b o u t thought o u t ,

wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough; but all we kids knew that Bobbie Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobbie Decker a coat. I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that. I didn't see a price tag, but ten dollars

when I suddenly thought of Bobbie Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class. Bobbie Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess during the winter. His mother always

ought to buy anything. I put the coat and my ten-dollar bill on the counter and pushed them toward the lady behind it. She looked at the coat, the money, and me. "Is this a Christmas present for someone?" she asked kindly. "Yes," I replied shyly. "It's ... for Bobbie. He's in

my class, and he doesn't have a coat." The nice lady smiled at me. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas. That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons, and write, "To Bobbie, From Santa Claus" on it ... Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobbie Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially one of Santa's helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobbie's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Suddenly, Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going." I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell twice and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma. Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobbie. He looked down, looked around, picked up his present, took it inside and closed the door. Forty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my grandma, in Bobbie Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: Ridiculous! Santa was alive and well ... AND WE WERE ON HIS TEAM! Author Unknown

Bruderheim Elementary’s Search for Christmas

Joy to the World Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing. Joy to the world, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs

employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found,

Far as, far as, the curse is found. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love.

In appreciation of our continued association, we extend our thanks, and our Best Wishes for the Holiday Season. May Peace, Good Health, and Prosperity be yours now and through the New Year!

7 things to know about Christmas

CUTE LITTLE PERFORMERS IN MUNDARE Mundare School Kindergarten performers on Dec. 11.

Festive cocktail: The Candy Cane 1 ounce vodka 1 ounce peppermint schnapps 1/2 ounce heavy cream Dash of grenadine for color

Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Pour into glasses filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a candy cane.

The Christmas season is full of traditions, folklore and rich history. However, amid all of the traditions we've come to know, there are many bits of trivia of which you may not be familiar. Here are a few littleknown facts about Christmas. 1. The first manufactured Christmas tree ornaments were sold in 1880 by the former Woolworth department store. 2. Christmas trees originally featured actual lighted candles, which were naturally a fire hazard. So containers filled with water had to be kept near the tree. 3. Construction workers first erected an undecorated tree at Rockefeller Center in New York City in the early 1930s. They have been credited with start-

ing the annual tradition. 4. Although sometimes construed as sacriligious, the shortened form "Xmas" is actually derived from Christ's name and has been popular in Europe since the 1500s. It is believed to be derived from the Greek word "Xristos," which means Christ. 5. The National Confectioners Association reports that for 200 years candy canes were solid white. In the 1950s an automated machine was invented that could put on the red stripes. 6. The idea of Christmas greeting cards started in Britain in the 1830s. 7. Christmas celebrations were banned in Boston between 1659 and 1681. Those caught celebrating would be fined.

Twas The Night Before Christmas Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! "Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On Donner! and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack. His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Mama’s Happy Christmas It had seemed to the little Wendell children that they would have a very sad Christmas. Mama had been very ill, and papa had been so anxious about mama that he could not think of anything else. When Christmas Day came, however, mama was so much better that she could lie on the lounge. The children all brought their stockings into her room to open them. "You children all seem as happy as if you had had your usual Christmas tree," said mama, as they sat around her. "Why, I never had such a happy Christmas before," said sweet little Agnes. "And it's just because you are well again." "Now I think you must all run out for the rest of the day," said the nurse, "because your mama wants to see you all again this evening." "I wish we could get

up something expressly for mama's amusement," said Agnes, when they had gone into the nursery. "How would you like to have some tableaux in here?" asked their French governess, Miss Marcelle. "Oh, yes," they all cried, "it would be fun, mama loves tableaux." So all day long they were busy arranging five tableaux for the evening. The tableaux were to be in the room which had folding-doors opening into Mrs. Wendell's sitting-room. At the proper time Miss Marcelle stepped outside the foldingdoors and made a pretty little speech. She said that some young ladies and a young gentleman had asked permission to show some tableaux to Mrs. Wendell if she would like to see them. Mrs. Wendell replied that she would be charmed. Then mademoiselle

announced the tableaux; opening the doors wide for each one. This is a list of the tableaux: First, The Sleeping Beauty; second, Little Red Riding Hood; third, The Fairy Queen; fourth, Old Mother Hubbard; fifth, The Lord High Admiral. Miss Marcelle had arranged everything so nicely, and Celeste, the French maid, helped so much with the dressing, that the pictures all went off without a single mistake. Mama was delighted. She said she must kiss those dear young ladies, and that delightful young man who had given her such a charming surprise. So all the children came in rosy and smiling. "Why, didn't you know us?" asked the little Lord Admiral. "I know this," said mama, "I am like Agnes; I never had such a happy Christmas before." Author Unknown

Frosty the Snowman Frosty the Snowman, was a jolly happy soul, With a corn cob pipe and a button nose, and two eyes made of coal. Frosty the Snowman, is a fairytale, they say. He was made of snow, but the children know he came to life one day. There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found, For when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around! Oh, Frosty, the Snowman, was alive as

he could be; and the children say he could laugh and play, just the same as you and me. Thumpety t h u m p , t h u m p , thumpety t h u m p , thump, look at Frosty go. Thumpety thump, thump, thumpety thump, thump, over the hills of snow. Frosty the Snowman, knew the sun was hot that day, so he said, "Let's run, and

we'll have some fun now, before I melt away." Down to the village, with a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there, all around the square, sayin', "Catch me if you can." He led them down the streets of town, right to the traffic cop; and only paused a moment, when he heard him holler, "Stop!" For Frosty, the Snowman, had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye, sayin' "Don't cry, I'll be back again some day."

You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch Lyrics as recited by Boris Karloff from the popular Christmas show You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch You really are a heel, You're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch, You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel! You're a monster, Mr.

Grinch, Your heart's an empty hole, Your brain is full of spiders, you have garlic in your soul, Mr. Grinch, I wouldn't touch you with a thirty-nine-and-ahalf foot pole! You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch, You have termites in your smile,

You have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile, Mr. Grinch, Given a choice between the two of you'd take the seasick crocodile! You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch, You're the king of sinful sots, Your heart's a dead tomato splotched with moldy purple spots, Mr.

Grinch, You're a three decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce! You nauseate me, Mr. Grinch, With a nauseous super "naus"!, You're a crooked dirty jockey and you drive a crooked hoss, Mr. Grinch,

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!" Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th' angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem." Hark! the herald angels

sing, "Glory to the newborn King!" Christ, by highest heav'n adored: Christ, the everlasting Lord; Late in time behold him come, Offspring of the favored one. Veil'd in flesh, the Godhead see; Hail, th'incarnate Deity: Pleased, as man, with men to dwell,

Jesus, our Emmanuel! Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!" Hail! the heav'n born Prince of peace! Hail! the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Risen with healing in his wings Mild he lays his glory by, Born that man no more may die:

Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Your soul is an appalling dump heap overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of rubbish imaginable mangled up in tangled up knots! You're a foul one, Mr. Grinch,

You're a nasty wasty skunk, Your heart is full of unwashed socks, your soul is full of gunk, Mr. Grinch, The three words that best describe you are as follows, and I quote, "Stink, stank, stunk"!

Let the spirit of love gently fill our hearts and homes. In this loveliest of seasons may you find many reasons for happiness.
