Visit from Santa
Santa and Mrs. Claus always take time out of their busy Christmas season to stop by Flagstaff County and greet all the children in the region. It’s one of their favourite stops, they say, greeting families and staff alike. This year they dropped in on Wednesday, Dec. 4 to the Flagstaff County Administration Building, greeting hundreds of children. There was a new Christmas market there this year, too!

Christmas Greetings of Christmas Savings Sandra Erickson Ph: 780-384-2030
Sedgewick email: sedgewicknews@gmail.com
Merry Christmas and have a well deserved break! Thanks for all you do! Talk to you in the New Year. In 2019 I started writing the Sedgewick news column, thinking it cannot be that hard. Within a couple of weeks I felt the opposite. How am I gonna come up with news, week after week? Suddenly the days flew by and you're like, it's time again already? How did my predecessors last multiple years? Twelve or 15plus years, double digits if you can imagine! Yet here I am, entering my sixth year. Wow! That seems unreal. And I have to say it's thanks to all of you! A person here or there in the grocery line up would mention they like reading my column. Then a lady stayed behind at an event just to catch me and saying how much she appreciates my writing. Well, after that I was hooked. I am incredibly thankful for each and every submission I received over the years, each and every compliment about the Sedgewick news column and certainly thankful for all those faithful readers subscribed to the paper and those advertising within it, to keep this paper going. I hope you're looking forward to the slower days, between Christmas and New Year's, when we forget what day of the week it is and just get to be. Enjoy this year's Christmas greetings, the Santa letters, always hilarious, and let our
steadfast news writers and deliverers have a well deserved break. A newspaper is a jigsaw puzzle that takes its own special skill set. Shout out to the wonderful crew at The Community Press. May you all be blessed this Christmas, find some magic or create your own, and have a fabulous start into the new year. And even if you feel you didn't accomplish much compared to others, be kind to yourself. We aren't supposed to compare our children as each is different, so maybe it's time to cut ourselves some slack and just appreciate how far we've come in our own lane. We're all unique, capable of different
things, and together we make a wonderful world. Merry Christmas and

Stats Canada reports Alberta’s homicide rates fell in 2023 Brett McKay Local Journalism Initiative Reporter
New data from Statistics Canada shows homicide rates are falling across the country. Alberta recorded a modest decline in homicides with 115 reported in 2023, down from 119 in 2022. There were 104 fewer homicides in Canada in 2023 compared to the previous year, bringing the national homicide rate down 14 per cent to 1.9 per 100,000 population. This is the first time the homicide rate has been below 2 per 100,000 population since 2019. Though overall Alberta recorded fewer homicides in 2023, there was a stark difference between trends in the province’s two largest city. Calgary’s homicide rate fell by 22 per cent, while Edmonton, with 48 homicides reported, saw its rate climb by 28 per cent. Edmonton and Calgary account for just under two-thirds of all homicides in the province. “Gang-related homicides and intimate partner homicides all experienced declines, contributing to the overall reduction in the national
homicide rate,” according to the StatsCan report. However, both remain major contributors to violent crime. About one in four homicides were gang-related in 2023, 31 fewer than the previous year. The number of gang-related homicides committed by youth, however, rose 31 per cent. Though there were 36 fewer victims of intimate partner homicides in 2023, 9 per cent of all homicides in Canada were committed by the victim’s intimate partner. “As has historically been the case, women accounted for a disproportionate number of victims of intimate partner homicide in 2023. This includes homicides committed by a current or former legally married or common-law spouse, dating partner, or other intimate partner,” the StatsCan report says. StatsCan also noted that Indigenous and racialized people were disproportionately the victims of homicide. Though Indigenous people make up only 5 per cent of the population, one-quarter of homicide victims are Indigenous, giving Indigenous peoples a homicide rate six times higher than non-Indigenous Canadians.

Sedgewick SDA Church celebrates Christmas season with pageant and song Leslie Cholowsky Editor
On Saturday, Dec. 7, the Sedgewick SDA Church celebrated Christmas at their annual program, filled with joyful performances. The evening began with the Children of the Sedgewick SDA Church, showcasing video performances of
dramatic sketches of the Christmas story between musical numbers. A solo by Raymond Anderson followed, along with mother-daughter duo Leanne and Vivian. The Walter Jahns Singers captivated the audience, and soloists Randy Howell and Eric Rayment showcased their talents.

The Sedgewick SDA Church celebrated their annual Christmas Concert and Pagent on Saturday, Dec. 7, which included musical performances from the SDA Choir, Walter Jahns Singers, the Children’s SDA Choir, and the Quartet O’ 7, as well as children performing Christmas sketches.
The Quartet O’ 7 even made a special appearance with their beautiful harmonies. Master of ceremonies Dale Jones kept the atmosphere lively. After the performances, attendees enjoyed a luncheon at the Sedgewick SDA hall, wrapping up a wonderful night of music and community.
Church member Debra Anderson says, “We are grateful to everyone who made this event memorable. “We can’t wait to do it again next year! Happy holidays!” The Walter Jahns Singers also appeared in Forestburg on Sunday, Dec. 15 in their annual Christmas Concert, which also featured the Quartet O’ 7.

Scenes from Santa Daze in Alliance
Try adding some Christmas humour to your chores Ricci Matthews Ph: 780-888-2490
Hardisty Call Ricci with your news!
Bowen and Finick Nelson of Wetaskiwin tell Santa what they want for Christmas in Alliance during Santa Daze, on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Well hello, folks. I would like to wish each and everyone a blessed and safe Christmas season and wish you all good health and happiness in 2025. ‘Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house there were gifts strewn all over and none of them tagged. Mom was feeling exhausted as she labelled and wrapped, reaching for another coffee; she
just was so bagged. Dad poked his head into the room full of gifts and jokingly said, " Gee, I am hungry honey, what's for supper tonight?" Mom was not feeling excited over cooking, too, so she quietly said,”Get some cup-of-soup, crackers, and have a bite!" Dad got the hint and soon his meal was done, he poured her a big wine glass and thought that would be fun. Mommy was haggard, but the wine perked her up, she started to relax and gave daddy a smile. "Come here big boy, sit for a while." Dad got the wrapping
paper, tape, and labels, too, poured another glass of wine and sauntered over to Mommy and sat with a big smile. You guessed it folks, those two had a blast, they rolled each other up in paper and tape, they giggled and smooched till the wine was all gone. The kids were at grandma’s, so what could go wrong? The lovers renewed what stress had undone. Merry Christmas to all as they say in a song.... and have a good night! ‘Till 2025...remember to give me some news. Cheerio!

Killam / Forestburg RCMP encourage drivers to practice headlight etiquette in poor weather conditions As winter brings challenging driving conditions, practicing proper headlight etiquette is essential for keeping everyone safe on the roads. Snow, blowing snow, fog, and long winter nights can impair visibility, making it important for drivers to understand how to effectively use their vehicle’s headlights. Killam / Forestburg RCMP provide simple headlight usage guidelines to improve safety and prevent accidents this winter: •High beams are effective for illuminating dark, rural roads where there is little to no ambient lighting. However, they can create a dangerous glare for oncoming drivers, especially in snowy or foggy conditions. Drivers should dim their high beams at least 300 meters away from an approaching vehicle and when following another vehicle closely, and 150 meters away when approaching a vehicle travelling in the
same direction. •In snowy or foggy weather, high beams can reflect off the particles in the air, actually decreasing visibility, so it’s best to rely on low beams in these conditions. •Many vehicles are equipped with fog lights, which are designed to provide wider, lower light beams that don’t reflect back as much in fog or heavy snow. If visibility is severely reduced, fog lights in addition to low beams are often the safest choice. •Low beams should also be used in urban areas, during heavy snowfall, or whenever glare from high beams could affect other drivers. •In situations where visibility is near-zero, such as intense blowing snow or whiteouts, turning on hazard lights along with low beams can alert other drivers to your presence. Be cautious when using hazard lights, as they can also signal an unexpected stop or slow movement.
•Avoid using hazard lights if road visibility is manageable, as they can confuse other drivers. •Many vehicles are equipped with automatic daytime running lights, which illuminate the front but not the rear of the vehicle. In low-visibility conditions, ensure that your full headlights and taillights are on so that your vehicle is visible from all angles. Legislature trims its Christmas tree George Lee Local Journalism Initiative Reporter
You can dangle a lot of symbolism from the many boughs of an Alberta-harvested Christmas tree that’s 71 feet tall. Don’t believe it? Ask the two elected officials who strung just such a tree with political and economic narratives during one of the final legislature sittings of 2024. And the UCP pair needed no aerial lift. The assembly floor worked a sweet Christmas treat for their attachment adventures, recounted in the lead-up to a lighting ceremony Dec. 3 in front of the iconic domed building in Edmonton. Ron Wiebe, the UCP member for Grande Prairie-Wapiti, called the tree “a shining symbol of the holiday season upon us.” But the tree also highlights the “vital role” of the forestry industry in spreading joy, providing jobs for diligent Albertans and managing a crit-
ical resource, said Wiebe. He added: “Can the minister of forestry and parks share how supporting Alberta’s forestry sector helps brighten the holidays for local workers and communities while showcasing the province’s commitment to responsible management and tradition?” Yes, Todd Loewen could. “This local tree, which came to us straight from Alberta’s forests, is a shining symbol of our thriving forestry sector, which not only supports our economy but also our local communities,” he responded. “As we light the tree tonight, we celebrate not only the holiday season that will soon be upon us but also the hard work of those in forestry who ensure responsible forest management while bringing holiday cheer to Albertans.” The tree is also emblematic of a special tradition, said Loewen, the member for Central Peace-Notley. A forestry employee has been
trudging into the woods every Christmas season for 27 years to harvest the perfect tree for a festive foreground to the legislature building. This year’s tree, which came from 18 kilometres northwest of Edson, symbolizes a sector that’s “a powerhouse for our economy,” Loewen told his legislature colleagues. An industry with an economic output of $14 billion, forestry employs over 30,000 Albertans in good-paying, stable jobs. It’s the largest employer in over 70 communities in the province. And many of those jobs are in rural areas where they’re “especially vital,” he noted. “By balancing economic development with responsible stewardship and focusing on innovation, we will ensure that forestry remains a sustainable and essential part of Alberta’s economy for generations to come,” said Loewen. Wiebe made sure the minister remembered to mention the role the industry plays in reducing

the risk of wildfires. Said Loewen: “As Albertans we love our forests, but we don’t want to love them to death. The reality is that decades of fire suppression and preventing selective harvesting created unnatural conditions where we now have huge areas of old, overgrown trees that can fuel catastrophic wildfires.” Selective harvesting cuts fuel loads and restores forests to a healthier and more natural state. “By supporting the forestry sector, we are not only protecting our communities but also ensuring our forests remain resilient (so) future generations can continue to enjoy them just as much as we do,” Loewen concluded. So yes, Virginia, there is a way to add symbols to a giant Christmas tree. And maybe even mangle a metaphor or two while you’re at it.

'Like a jail': Disabilities can make rural Alberta unliveable Brett McKay Local Journalism Initiative Reporter
A vast majority of people with disabilities in Canada face accessibility barriers, according to new data from Statistics Canada. For rural Albertans with disabilities, these hurdles can make their hometowns unliveable. Fifty-nine per cent of Albertans with disabilities reported barriers to accessibility in public spaces, slightly higher than the national average. Within this group, the degree of inaccessibility is tied to the severity of disability. About one-third of people who reported having a mild disability experienced accessibility barriers, compared to 87 per cent of people who said their disability is very severe. Zachary Weeks, a disability consultant and advocate, said these barriers can make anything from housing to health care harder to attain. “Some facilities aren't even wheelchair accessible, for example. I'm just speaking from my own experience, because I have (cerebral palsy) and use a power wheelchair full time. But, accessing health care is a human right, and a lot of people can't do that,” Weeks said. Alberta is one of only two provinces with no existing or introduced accessibility legislation. Having such a law in place would “really move the needle on making Alberta reach its full potential. I think it would be fair to say that the rural areas would benefit the most,”
Weeks said. Living in Edmonton, he said there may be limited options for transportation and housing, but outside or major cities those options may not exist at all. Until recently, Allison Johnson and her family lived in Westlock. Johnson’s teenage daughter has cerebral palsy and an intellectual developmental disorder. The lack of local programs and services, from physiotherapy to fostering social connections, was a deciding factor in their move to Edmonton “to get a better life.” “I couldn't get access to anything my child needed by myself. Like, if I wanted to take her to the theatre, there was no way,” Johnson said. Because she has epilepsy, Johnson is unable to drive. From trying to run errands to travelling out of town for medical appointments, limited transportation is a key barrier that keeps people with disabilities from living fully in rural communities, she said. “Once you lose your ability to transport yourself anywhere, you've given up a lot,” Johnson said. “You can't go anywhere. It's almost like a jail if you've got a place that doesn't provide anything.” Whether it happens when you are 20 or when you are 75 years old, virtually everyone ends up with mobility issues and loses the ability to drive, Johnson observed. And the same barriers that bar people with disabilities from living and working in a town today set limits on who can stay in their community as
they age. “In the long term, that's going to affect their community. Nobody's going to want to be in a place that they can't get around,” she said. As with the example of public transportation, Weeks said making Alberta accessible doesn’t require “reinventing the wheel,” but often just properly funding and building on the infrastructure already in place. “Instead of waiting for folks to file a

human rights complaint and go through the motions and then essentially throwing money at them to pay away the problem, invest that money in solving the problem,” he said. Weeks also said as the conversation around accessibility moves forward, it’s important to “raise the voices of those with disabilities in the rural communities, because so often they're forgotten and are not given the priority to weigh in on things.”

Registries collected $2.4 million from GoA portal last year Brett McKay Local Journalism Initiative Reporter
Since 2020, Albertans have been able to renew their vehicle registration online through a Government of Alberta website. The option saves thousands of people a trip to the registry office, but data from the province shows private registries still collect millions from these transactions. For each passenger vehicle registration renewal processed through the MyAlberta eServices portal, drivers are charged a service fee of $13. To complete their registration, users must select a registry agent — any agent, anywhere in the province — who receives that surcharge. According to statistics from Service Alberta, 198,688 passenger vehicle renewals were processed through the Government of Alberta website in 2023. A total of $2.4 million from the service charge on these renewals was distributed to registry offices, leaving many Albertans wondering what service they’re paying for when they’re completing the registration themselves online. Brandon Aboultaif, press secretary to the Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally, said Alberta’s government developed this arrangement through consultation with registry agents before rolling out the online system. “Alberta’s government distributes service fees for online registrations to registry agents at the same time as the launch of online services through the MyAlberta eServices portal,” Aboultaif said.

“Online registry services were developed under the commitment that registry agents will be included in the delivery of online registry services. The government works with registry agents to ensure the service fee goes to the registry agent of the Albertan’s choice. This policy was in place with the launch of online services.” Rikki McBride, CEO of the Association of Alberta Registry Agents, said the ministry committed early on to include registries in the development of the online portal, and to not enter into direct competition with them. The fee share helps cover a lot of behind the scenes work that customers might not see, McBride said. “Registries across the province do provide a number of services that are kind of on the back-end that have to do with e-services,” she said.
“They do all the marketing and promoting of those e-services and registry services that are available. You'll find on registry agent websites, for example, there will be a link directly to e-services. They would promote that in their marketing material. And that cost is all borne by the registry agent.” McBride said they also manage public information lines that guide people through available products and services. Ironically, the service fees from the government's online registration renewal portal help fund the person on the other end of the line when people call in to complain about having to pay it. “We have a call centre that folks can call into. When somebody does a transaction, if they have questions, there is a number they can call. Registry agents handle that. They also handle all the public inquiries that come into the offices,” McBride said.

Making every moment count at Christmas and throughout the year Leslie Cholowsky Editor
This has been another wonderful year. It’s been a year of greater need, met by Flagstaff County residents with greater generosity. I think 2024 is a time when we stepped fully back into our lives. It was wonderful to see so many great events held throughout the year. Rural living is surely the best-kept secret, with such a great quality of life that we experience in our small towns and villages. It’s also an amazing place where volunteers create magic, whether it’s ensuring that a curling rink gets a new ice plant, or that your children have an incredible experience at a winter festival, with a myriad of things in between. It’s easy to forget just how much a community is intertwined and inter-dependent on one another, especially if you’ve lived in a larger community where that’s not as evident. It can be as simple as volunteering for something where your particular expertise is needed, or as easy as shopping locally, where for every dollar spent, about two-thirds of that goes back into the community. I want to tell our readers just how much we appreciate you. We also want to thank our contributors, from our wonderful correspondents to everyone who reaches out and shares a story or a photo with us. We are your newspaper, and we love hearing about and sharing your news. We also truly appreciate those who advertise with us. Your patronage keeps us around; it allows us to keep telling local stories and covering local events. I remember being told by many people that the older I
get the faster time will go, and I tended to scoff at that. Well here I am, old-er, and it turns out they weren’t kidding. I’m reeling from the fact that Christmas is just around the corner somehow. This year passed in record time, and I feel like I missed some of it.. I’m not really one for making New Year’s resolutions, but I did try to remember during 2024 to act with intention, to speak with intention, and to savour every good moment as it was happening, without worrying about “What’s next?” It’s kind of like covering an event versus just attending for pleasure. Somehow looking through the lens of a camera throughout the evening puts you a step back from experiencing, instead you’re merely a spectator.
That’s really not something we want to be in our lives. Away from work, I have been trying to be not just a spectator, but a participant, whether that’s initiating conversations, visits, or invitations. I think it’s often easy to forget that it’s not up to others to create events for us, it’s kind of fun to plan and create an event for others, too, and also to plan special moments just for ourselves. Sometimes it’s okay just to plan a relaxing evening at home, and then, while it’s happening, experience it! Enjoy it! Don’t waste your precious time worrying about what you might have done wrong this week, or what you still have to do next week. Instead, be present in what you are doing right this minute. Enjoy it. Savour it.

The promise of Christmas. There was a time when Christmas meant that something very good was about to happen. But as we get older, life gets complicated, and we lose our child-like appreciation of it. If you had misfortune recently, we’d like you to know that Christmas will come, good things will happen, and the new year is waiting for us to greet it. And we think that’s something worth looking forward to.

from local kids! Dear Santa, I am just wondering, does your magic make it so if you eat 647 cookies on Christmas Eve you don’t get a super, super tummy ache? My Mom always says if I eat too, too much candy of sugar I’ll get the BAD POOPS so I know that your magic has to stop that! The good thing is the milk is healthy – so make sure you drink the milk or you’ll have tummy trouble. Santa, I know I have to tell the truth – I was medium good – I maybe did a little fighting with Ava, but that only happens at Shawna’s house. I try to help myself to not fight but it’s just impossible. I’ll try better next year if she’s not so frustrating – maybe that should be on her list too…. Santa I am wishing and wishing for a special ranger toy – Dino Fury key. It folds in, and you flick it up and
it gives your armour. If you want to check it out or watch it on TV. And also bring a Power Star – it’s a special spinner – Don’t mix them up – watch TV to get it right. My sister thinks she might want another water bottle – must be a Barbie one. She was just a little bit less medium good than me. She’s not so good at sharing – she pretends she had it first. Santa, bring my Mom a new water bottle – she only has two. Or something smelly or sparkly. Mom’s medium good as she has been sending us to our rooms. I am wondering, have you seen that happen? Dad would like a new gun – he only has two. He needs to get rid of those crop-eating magpies. We need to feed the world, not the magpies. Santa, my grandmas have been 129% good. They let us go in the hot tub. They let us eat candy! They don’t send us to our rooms – so bring them something smelly or sparkly. Grandpa Bill and Wayne and Gita have been pretty good. They
listen to my grandmas and they all can cook good spaghetti. Send them tools! Santa, I live in this town, in a red house with a black roof. There are numbers on the house but I don’t know them. There’s a rug by the door and there’s a black truck that can only fit three people – so drop the presents off there. Thank you for the gifts! Don’t eat too many cookies! Drink your milk! Merry Christmas! From your medium good kid, Parker _________________
Dear Santa, How’s Rudolph? Is he ready for the big trip? Are all the toys

I really want a big furby that glows in the dark. He can talk. And maybe this kitchen thing – like a Minnie Mouse Baker – it is 100 money. We would have to take all our money out of the bank – so please take it out of your bank and bring it. Thanks for saving me the money. Santa, please bring her stuff for my school work – like a pencil and an elf eraser. Santa, I live where the Co-op is. You go straight then left. My
house is brown and black. Sorry last year we forgot the cookies but this year’s plan is to have Grandma make them. She has a book recipe. All you have to do is ask her to make cookies and she says “You ask for it – You got it!” Just the last time she made them I didn’t like them, but everyone else did - but that was just one time. She’s made cookies 30 times, just one time not so good – the rest were awesome! Santa, I love you! Looking forward to the expensive present! Love Leena Thanks again, I know I will love it!

from local kids! Dear Santa, Are you resting up for Christmas? I’m not sleeping very well. I’m getting the nightmares. Are the elves getting all the toys made? Santa, to tell the truth I haven’t been all the time good. Just to let you know my brother is annoying, he bites, he pushes, I just can’t take it anymore. I have to shut my door and lock it tight. I just need 30 minutes of me time. Santa this year I would love a princess dollie and that thing that you put over your clothes to keep your dress clean – maybe it’s called an apron. My Mom was fighting about it because I really wanted to buy it and she said I had to ask you first, Santa. Bring my not-so-goodlittle-brother a robot so he will leave me alone. Santa, Mommy just wants time with me and maybe for a little treat a
small bottle of booze. Daddy would like a princess dress costume, so he could play with me. He’s going to laugh at this gift! So maybe bring him a coffee cup, ‘cause kids wake them up too early and coffee lets parents think in the morning. Grammas and Grandpas just need time with us grandkids - maybe bring them more snacks for us because we are always hungry. Santa, I live in town. My house has bright brown on it and our door is red. Sorry no chimney, use the front door. Text my Mom for the code. I’m working on a craft for you. I just need some tape. We even have cookie stamps to make some for you! Sleep tight, I love you Brynlee _________________ Dear Santa, How does the sleigh have magic to go forwards? How does Rudolph fly? I have been good this year by listening to my Mom.
I would like an Ironman helmet for Christmas. My brother Ethan wants an apple watch. Henry would like a Samsung Galaxy watch. Mom and Dad don’t wish for anything. I hope you enjoy the
cookies we leave out for you and that Rudolph likes his carrots. We just moved from Edmonton but I know you know where my house is because you’re magic! Love, Hayden

from local kids! Dear Santa, I love you because you bring good toys. I liked the ice cream shop that I got last year. I’ve been waiting all summer for Christmas. Do you know how hard it is to wait that long? I’ve been 4 per cent good – that means I’ve been fabulous good, no problems here! Santa, I’m wishing for a Barbie house with dolls in it and a barn with animals in it and some play people. Santa, my Mom would really like pretty pants and a pretty dress and a pretty shirt and pretty shoes with gems on them. Daddy would like new summer shoes, he already got new underwear at the store, so he’s good there! Santa, I live in this town where that tiny car is parked. It has a back yard and we have a chimney – so that’s good news – I’m not sure how you get down it but that’s good that I have a chimney. Will be leaving you a treat! Don’t eat too much at every other kid’s house, cause my cookies are good and the milk is great – not sour! Love you This is the end now, and this took a long time
Dear Santa, Are you the same Santa that came to me in the Philippines? Did you wear shorts then because it was hot? Santa, I had to get a new winter coat for Canada. It is cold…. Santa, I saw some cool Batman toys in Walmart. Do your elves make Walmart toys? Santa, I have been mostly good this year. I take care of my puppy, play downstairs and I eat my vegetables – cause I am always hungry. Santa I would really like some of those cool Walmart toys like Batman. Toys for the bathtub…. Any cool toys. Santa, I think my Mommy would love a sparkly ring. Santa brings Teto a computer game. We like to play games I usually win. Santa, I live in Canada, you go straight, then my house is on the right side of the road. It is close to my school. I love my school – recess is best. Santa, I am excited for Christmas. It’s too many sleeps. Merry Christmas Fly safe I will have snacks for you Love, Nico
Colby gets his stuff. He’s a real cowboy with a belt buckle and cowboy boots and stars and he even has a horse. Santa, I can’t remember if I’ve been good all year. It’s too long to remember. Hopefully I was good. It’s hard to be good all the time when you have to look after a little brother and two little sisters. They are pushy and sometimes bite. So, Santa, I am going to be a real cowboy so please bring chaps, cowboy shirts, and new cowboy boots – really anything that makes you a real cowboy. Bring my brother something to bite on, so he won’t bite us, ‘cause it hurts. Grayson wants to be a cowgirl, so bring cowgirl stuff. Oaklee – she’s not a biter. Bring a tickle machine, she likes to be tick-
led. Santa, bring Mommy some shoes, she has 10, but a little more is good! Daddy needs a hard hat, so he can haul oil. His red one has a crack. Santa, check your map because I have moved. I used to live in Bawlf now I live here at my house. My house is white and we have beautiful lights. I’ll keep the lights on so you know where I live. My Mom is busy but I think she will make you cookies with chocolate inside. They are pretty good! We don’t have any carrots, so sorry. Let Rudolph know. Mom doesn’t want to drive to Camrose on the slippery roads to buy some. Santa, I might need a new cowboy hat. I already have two but cowboys need lots of hats. I love you Santa, Maverik – The Cowboy

from local kids! Dear Santa, How’s the weather up there? Lots of snow here! Are all the toys made? Trying hard to be good! Most of the time doing okay… To be good I eat everything that my parents make even lettuce, fish, and onions. I help out a bit at home – clean the floor and the table and I think I help making food. So, I think it’s been a good year. Santa, I am hoping for a transformer and HULK hands and silly string. Oliver has had a good year, too. Bring him a toy vacuum and a digger. Santa, bring my Mom seeds to grow and maybe a treat juice. Dad would really like some food to grow and maybe some time to watch his phone. He likes to watch ads on his phone. Santa, I live in Sedgewick. My house
is grey with number 7. You are welcome anytime. We’ll try not to put the fire on the night you come. We will be leaving you cookies and milk. Mom is a good baker. Thanks for the presents! Fly safe! with Parker – perhaps several dozen times, but we’re working on trying to have less bugging days. There was that one perfect day that we got along – it was amazing!!! So that means I’ve been 28% amazing good! Santa, oh my list which is a long list of my wishes.. but I just need to think more…. A saddle Roller skates Checkers game Check back with me next week, I might have more ideas! Frontier wants just tractors – red ones!
Santa, Mom really, really wants a credit card for Christmas! Daddy would want coffee. He really needs coffee in the morning. It gives him power to rope a cow. And Santa, Mrs. Vicki is kinda my Auntie, maybe bring her a saddle too – she has lots of horses. Santa my house has a black roof, look for the donkeys. My dog looks like a wolf, he’s kinda growly – he doesn’t just growl – so maybe make sure you use the chimney! We will be making
cookies – my Mom is a good baker, so you can eat the cookies. Santa don’t forget the credit card for Mom, ‘cause she lost hers and she really, really needs one to buy coffee. And Santa, I just remembered I need a hula hoop. I love you,
Santa! I have been 28% good! And next year I’m going to learn to do the laundry – that will make me be on the super duper good list! Love Ava Good bye, I’m getting tired now.

from local kids! Dear Santa, Merry Christmas! I like you! I liked the present you brought last year, especially the motor bike – it broke. Santa, I’ve been good – I cleaned my room one day with my pretend vacuum. Santa this year I would like a puppy in a carrier – Just a toy, but it needs to make sounds. I have two pink carriers, so please don’t bring pink. Sometimes my sisters fight, but, bring Emma a new doll and Maya a new doll, then they won’t fight. Mom would like a new flower pot and a mop and a vacuum and a broom. Then she could clean my room. My toy vacuum doesn’t work so good. Daddy needs a new tool box, cause Mom’s greenhouse broke. The roof is now gone. Santa, I live in Lougheed in a tiny house with gates around it so my dogs can’t jump out. My house has a big Christmas tree. It was too big for the roof so some of it is in a box. Use the chimney – watch out for the barking dogs – hopefully they are sleeping. We will be buying
some cookies… what is your favorite? Mine is sugar cookies. Really I just lick the icing. Mom threw the Halloween cookies out! Love you for the gifts! Love Molly _________________
Dear Santa, Santa, I’ve been a bit good. I clean my room – well maybe not so much. I think about cleaning my room – but it’s a whole lot of work, so maybe tomorrow. I always tell my Mom when my brother is being rude – and that’s lots of times – 67 times before school even starts. Compared to my brothers I’ve been a bit better. Santa I’m wishing for every single girl stuff, like” Doll stuff Magical things Pretty things Smelly things Sparkly things Just really good girl stuff, please! Bring my brothers boy stuff! Cars and magical boy stuff. Santa bring Mom flowers and a lot of money. Dad would like money too and also a ticket to ride a scary rollercoaster. My Grandmas and Grandpas want money too, so they can buy us grandkid stuff. Grandmas really like to shop especially for grandkids. They like to buy dresses, shoes and
candy. Santa, I am moving before Christmas, so check your map. I’ll be beside my Grandma’s house at the farm. It’s going to be great. I’ll be able to run and yell, that’s not so easy to do in town. Check your map, so you find me in the right house. Mom’s super busy going to dance, figure skating, hockey, school, so hopefully you will get some cookies made, if she gets time. Hope your elves make good girl stuff. Love Karoline _________________
Dear Santa: Santa, so seeing how you have the MOST magic – do you know where my missing pig-
gie banks are? I’ve been missing them and there was money in them. I think either a naughty elf has taken them or someone in my house has taken them. I’m suspicious about my sister – so if you see her taking them – put her on the naughty list, but most importantly return my money because if I don’t get good Christmas gifts, I want to go buy what I wanted. Most years Santa, you have brought me good gifts. This year I’m just wanting a magic mixie – It’s a doll that doesn’t really do any kind of magic, I just need it to add to my collection. If my sister isn’t on the naughty list from stealing my piggy bank bring her something – I

don’t know what, just something. Mom is really wishing for Emery Fornal’s room to be clean so she wouldn’t have to do it. So, send some cleaning fairies! Dad would like some more of Grandpa Frank’s tomatoes. And Santa, I heard Mom saying Ross and Laurie’s cows were in the wrong pasture, so maybe help them out by putting their cows back, and maybe send
them a box of chocolates. That would be an act of kindness. Santa, my house is yellow and has Christmas lights and there is a tree house. I live by Ross and Laurie’s house – but come to my house first! Hope you enjoy the treats we will leave for you. Love Ellea Keep your eyes open for my lost piggy banks – one is a frog and one is a Canadian mail box.

from local kids! Dear Santa: Is there really a naughty list or is that just something Mom’s say? So, Santa, I’ve been so really good – 194% To be good – I clean the house with my Mom, really she does the most work. I feed and water my dog and try hard not to fight with my sister. She always starts it so that doesn’t really count – does it? Santa I would love a remote control spider – don’t forget the batteries. And maybe a remote control skid steer – maybe I already have one – not sure… bring one just in case. My sister has been kinda good, so bring her make up. Santa, my Mom would like a new iphone case, she uses her phone lots to phone my Dad and always
my Nana to see if she can babysit and she phones you Santa, I think. I think she’s checking to see if I’m on the naughty list – good thing I’ve been kinda good 194%. Also bring my Mom new pillows, she already has nine but more are better. Dad needs a new Flyers cup and a new blanket – he needs to rest because he does too much work. Santa, check your GPS ‘cause I don’t know my house num-
ber, also just look up Kinsley’s house number, I live beside her. Santa, we have a problem – no chimney
so come in the door – don’t forget your magic key. Santa, bring Nana Donna an Oilers cup to
sip wine in it when she comes to watch us kids hockey games. Bring Papa an Oilers cup too. Nana Cindy and Papa Bill need a Flyers cup. Bring coffee and
beer to refill cups – it’s called grown up juice. Have a good flight! You can wake me up if you want when you come… Love Ryker

Mix it up with popcorn for an easy, creative treat Leslie Cholowsky Editor
When you’re trying to think of something to add to your Christmas
baking repertoire, this year think popcorn. Popcorn is an affordable favourite that’s easy to adapt to any Christmas favourite.
White chocolate peppermint popcorn bark is as easy as “pop, melt, mix, and snap,” according to the Popcorn Board. Leave out the mint and add dried cranberries or your favourite nut, and you’ve got a real treat! Or even just drizzle melted chocolate over your popcorn, and add some festive sprinkles and you’re done. Popcorn is still a traditional tree decoration, but did you know it’s best to use day-old popcorn over
freshly popped? The older popcorn is tougher and tends not to break as easily. When stringing popcorn, you can use thread, waxed thread, or even dental floss. When Christmas is over, place your garland outdoors for the birds to enjoy, as long as it hasn’t got any glue or other non-edible items with it. If you’re looking for something easy to make with the kids, choose Jingle Balls (peppermint
mini-popcorn balls rolled in coloured sugars) or even Chocolate Popcorn

Health Canada offers safety tips for keeping the Christmas season merry Anna Smith Local Journalism Initiative Reporter While Health Canada encourages residents to enjoy the holidays and make the most of this time with loved ones, officials also provided some tips to help make sure they keep safe as well. Many toys and decorations are powered by batteries, which, if swallowed by children, can have serious consequences.
A swallowed button battery can cause severe internal chemical burns in just two hours, and as such, parents are encouraged to keep an eye on devices such as watches or toys, and ensure that compartments are firmly closed. Beyond batteries, toys can also hold various different hazards in the form of pinch points or choking hazards. When buying holiday gifts, look for sturdy and well-made
ones that include the manufacturer’s contact information, and read and follow all age labels and safety messages. Pay attention to recalls and safety alerts for toys and other items that can pose risks like choking, falls, injuries, burns, or ingestion hazards when deciding what to put under the tree. The tree itself, of course, can be a fire hazard, and should be kept away from

Anything with sweet drizzle is a hit, and these cupcakes deliver plenty of lemony flavour in every bite. cake cases (liners) ready. Beat the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, self-raising flour and lemon zest and mix until combined. Spoon the mix evenly into the cupcake cases (liners) and bake for 18 to 22 minutes until they are baked through and springy to the touch. Mix together the lemon juice and sugar for the drizzle in a bowl. Once the cupcakes are out of the oven, carefully spoon the drizzle over the cupcakes, then leave them to cool fully on a wire rack while you make the buttercream. Beat the butter until smooth; this can take a couple of minutes. Add the icing sugar in two batches, beating well after each addition, then add the lemon juice and beat again. Pipe or spread the buttercream onto your cupcakes, then sprinkle each one with some sprinkles and lemon zest.

Prune Puree
PEACE ON EARTH And warm wishes to you, our neighbours and friends, this holiday season. Wayne, Jane, and staff
Are you looking for the secret ingredient that can make your savoury and sweet dishes a bit healthier? Then you might want to consider adding California prunes to your recipes. Or, more specifically, prune puree. Their natural sweetness means you can swap out one-third to one-half of the sugar in a recipe. You can replace up to three large eggs in any recipe by using ¼ cup (60 ml) of puree for each egg. And you can reduce the amount of butter or oil a recipe calls for by using an equal amount of prune puree. You can find prune puree in the baking section of your grocery store. Or make this simple recipe that you can store in the fridge for up to a month. Find more recipes at californiaprunes.ca/recipes. Prune Puree Prep time: 10 minutes Makes: 1 cup (250 ml) Ingredients: 1 1/3 cups (330 ml) pitted California prunes (approximately 8) 6 tbsp (90 ml) hot water Directions: Mix prunes and water in a blender or food processor. Pulse to combine and then blend to a smooth, pourable consistency. Cover and refrigerate for up to one month.
If you want to add a crunchy aspect, substitute the herbs with finely chopped lettuce and mix with the avocado, even adding a little mayo if necessary. This is the type of recipe that allows for multiple substitions and additions, but is still a delicious treat.

Featured Recipe: Cranberry Pom cocktails If you’re tired of using cranberry juice to flavour your holiday cocktails, this year try some pomegranate to provide the traditional red colour, but with a real flavour twist! It’s always margarita season, and this pomegranate version, which can also be sweetened with maple syrup, is sure to become your new favourite. Using a quality tequila is key, for this version, you might want to try silver tequlia or tequila blanco over an anejo, which might overpower the delicate pomegranate flavour. And be sure to include the Triple sec, it’s the unsung hero in this cocktail. First you want to prepare the rim of your glass, by combining salt or sugar (your preference) and the zest of a lime with your fingers. Spread the mixture out on a plate. Rim your glass with a lime wedge, or dip it in juice, then dip it in the sugar. Regular version: Fill the glass with ice, being careful not to knock off the sugared rim. In a cocktail shaker that already has ice, add one ounce fresh lime juice,
two ounces of tequila, two ounces of pomegranate juice, 3/4 of an ounce of Triple Sec, and a halfounce of either plain sugar syrup, honey, or maple syrup for a twist. Give everything a good shake, then carefully strain the mixture into your prepared glass. You
can garnish with a slice of lime and a few pomegranate seeds for an elegant presentation. Frozen version: If you like a frozen version, load everything into the blender, using three cups of ice, two ounces of tequila, one cup of pomegranate juice, two ounces
of freshly squeezed lime juice, and one ounce of syrup. Blend to an icy smooth mixture, and adjust to your taste. Alcohol-free version: For a very tasty mocktail version, simply substitute the tequlia for a quality sparkling water, and doubling the quantity, whether you mix using the traditional method or try the blender.

Canadian Soldiers’ heartwarming Christmas tradition during WWII In the winter of 1943, amidst the chaos and hardship of World War II, two young Canadian soldiers, Private Jack McGregor and Corporal Tom Parker, found themselves stationed far from home in the icy trenches of Italy. The holiday season, typically a time of warmth and family, felt a world away from the grim realities of war. Yet, it was during this difficult Christmas that McGregor and Parker started a tradition that would live on for decades, touching the hearts of generations to come. The two soldiers had been childhood friends, both from small towns in Ontario, and had enlisted together when the war broke out. As Christmas approached that year, both men found themselves longing for the festive cheer they had known as children: the smell of roasting turkey, the sound of carolers, and the warmth of their families’ company. But instead, they were surrounded by the cold, barren landscape of Italy and the ever-present fear of enemy fire. “It was hard to imagine a Christmas without our families,” recalled McGregor, who passed awawy in 2015. “We were in the trenches, and there was nothing to remind us of home. But Tom and I decided that we wouldn’t let the war steal Christmas from us. We had to make something special out of it.” On Christmas Eve, the two soldiers set to work, determined to bring a little holiday magic to their fellow troops. Using scraps of tinfoil and wire, they crafted a small, makeshift Christmas tree and decorated it with bits of colored paper. They scavenged for any food they could find—a few cans of fruit, some hard biscuits—and laid out a simple feast for their comrades. But it was their gift to each other that would become the centerpiece of their tradition. With little to give, the men ex-
changed simple handwritten letters expressing their gratitude and hopes for the future. These letters were not just words of encouragement, but promises to carry on the memory of the Christmas they shared, no matter what the future held. “We didn’t have much,” Tom Parker remembered in a past interview. “We had each other, and that was enough. We
gave what we could: a letter, a smile, and the promise that we would see this through together.” Decades later, after the war had ended, McGregor and Parker’s tradition lived on. Every Christmas, they would gather with their families and, in memory of those wartime Christmases, exchange simple letters of gratitude and joy. It was a
gesture that reminded them of the power of friendship and the enduring spirit of the holiday season, no matter the circumstances. “It was never about the gifts or the food,” said McGregor’s daughter, Emily, now in her 60s. “It was about showing kindness, even when everything else seemed bleak.” The tradition passed down through the gener-
ations, inspiring others to focus on the simple, enduring gifts of love, friendship, and hope during the holidays. For the McGregor and Parker families, and countless
others who heard the story, that Christmas in 1943 remains a symbol of resilience, showing that even in the midst of war, the spirit of Christmas could still shine through.
