One day in at the 2023 Boston Pizza Cup Men’s Provincial Curling Championship held Feb. 8 through 12 at the River Cree in Edmonton, Killam’s Iris Gira posted a photo of her eldest son, Kris, and her great-nephew Karrick both poised to represent their teams in the championship in friendly competition.

Kris Gira was playing with Team Kozak, and Karrick, son of Curling legend Kevin Martin, was playing on Team Koe. Team Kozak lost their first draw against Team Vavrek on Wednesday, 82, then a second, against Team Jacques,

on Friday, 7-5. On Saturday they came up early against Team Sturmay 9-3, knocked out of the championship.

Team Koe won their first match on Thursday against Team Cross, moving on to play against Team Sturmay later that night, winning that draw 8-4. On Friday Team Koe won the draw against Sluchinski in an 8-7 final to go to the B qualifier against Team Jacques, winning that 6-5.

The A1 v. B1 final went to Team Bottcher, but after Koe beat Team Sluchinski 6-2 to win a spot in the Championship final, things swung the other way, with a fatal mistake by Team Bottcher and excellent play from Team Koe giving Team Koe a 6-5 win.

Next stop for Karrick is the Brier.

RCMP Report vehicle tailgating another vehicle. Patrols were made by the Killam RCMP and the vehicle was not located.

Later, a Suspicious Vehicle was reported near a residence in Strome. Killam RCMP Members located the vehicle on the highway.

was on the phone. No offence occurred.

On Thursday, Feb. 9, a Suspicious Vehicle was reported in Forestburg.

A white Dodge extended cab with aftermarket rims was seen with a box full of copper wire. Killam RCMP Members patrolled Forestburg and were unable to

locate the vehicle.

Also reported and attended to by Killam RCMP during the past week were: two animal calls, one assault complaint, one charge of driving without due care or attention, three instances of failure to attend or failure to comply, four false alarms, two in-

formation files, one call under the Mental Health Act, two complaints of mischief damage to property or obstructing enjoy-

ment of property; seven moving traffic violations, and six reportable traffic collisions.

On Friday, Feb. 3, Killam RCMP Members attended an abandoned vehicle on Highway 855. The Killam Member was unable to contact the registered owner, and the vehicle was towed.

That Friday police received several calls were regarding pigs on the road near Hardisty. A Killam RCMP Member contacted the owner who was already wrangling the pigs.

That day Killam RCMP assisted Coronation RCMP Detachment and apprehended four subjects who were suspected in the Break and Enter of a business.

The Subjects were held in Killam for JIR. One subject was remanded and others were released on conditions by a Justice of the Peace.

On Saturday, Feb. 4, Killam RCMP Members attended a complaint of a Break and Enter to a business in Forestburg, where vehicles were reported as stolen. Killam Members obtained photos at the scene. No suspects identified.

Later on Saturday Killam RCMP responded to a report of an abandoned truck near Forestburg.

The vehicle, which had been stolen, was involved in a flight from Police earlier in Sherwood Park. The registered owner was notified and the vehicle towed.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, a suspicious vehicle was reported outside of a residence in Forestburg.

Killam RCMP Members ran the vehicle licence and determined it was not stolen.

Later, Killam RCMP issued tickets to the driver of an off highway vehicle with Failing to Produce an Operators Licence and Certificate of Registration and Financial Responsibility (Insurance) card.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, a trailer was reported stolen from a residence in Killam.

No chargeable suspects identified.

Also that day theft of numerous propane tanks was reported from a business in Forestburg.

Killam RCMP Members attended the scene. Surveillance footage was obtained and the file is still under investigation.

Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services questioned on municipal front-line policing costs Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

During an online roundtable discussion Tuesday, Jan. 24, between members of the rural media and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis around rural crime, we questioned the minister around the policing costs put upon small municipalities and what they are getting for their money.

In 2020, municipalities under 5000 began paying a portion of front-line policing costs with the promise of additional RCMP officers and civilian support staff.

The amount each municipality was charged, according to a letter from the Justice and Solicitor General, was the result of a calculation based on population, equalized assessment, crime severity, shadow population and detachment location.

Flagstaff County has budgeted $351,598 for 2023, not even including the other municipalities in the region.

In a Feb. 1 Community Policing Report to the Flagstaff County, Killam

RCMP Sgt. Colin Thorne reports: “Of the eight established positions, seven officers are currently working. This includes one Sergeant, one Corporal Ops NCO, who started mid-January, and five Constables.

There is one hard vacancy at the Constable level at this time.” The Killam RCMP Detachment’s staffing level hasn’t changed in over a decade.

We asked Minister Ellis where the front-line policing money was spent if it did not result in additional RCMP members for the area.

“We provide money to the RCMP. It's not about money,” he said. “We have been providing money to the RCMP and increasing that funding for the last several years.

“The problem is that the RCMP just do not have enough human beings to provide the contracted services and that is not exclusive to Alberta.”

A report by PricewaterhouseCoopers and released by the provincial government in 2021, revealed that the provincial government contributes about $500 million to the RCMP in Alberta per year

in a cost-sharing agreement where the federal government also contributes $170 million.

In a follow-up email with Dylan Topal, press secretary to Minister Ellis, he indicated that in 2020-21, the first year under the new funding model, the RCMP added 76 new officers and 56 civilian support positions to the province of Alberta while in 2021-22, 55 new RCMP officers and 42 additional civilian support positions were added.

This year, he said, the number of officers and civilian positions added to the province will continue to grow, with an additional 40 officers and 52 civilian support positions. In terms of where in Alberta the new officers and support staff were deployed, he said he did not have the answer.

“The RCMP, like all police services in Alberta, makes operational decisions about matters like deployment independently from the government,” he said.

“The RCMP decides where to deploy officers based on its analysis of factors like calls for service, crime trends and

local knowledge and intelligence.”

Media RCMP spokesperson Troy Savinkoff responded to our email requesting the information and said that the total number of new members did not necessarily mean that many new boots on the ground.

Savinkoff said by email that 41 detachments in Alberta received new RCMP members and 47 received support staff since the new police funding model came into effect three years ago.

The detachments who received the most new members were Grande Prairie, Southern Alberta GIS, Airdrie, Cochrane, and Central Alberta District GIS who received four each. Next in line was Blackfalds, Rocky Mountain House, Athabasca, and Elk Point who received three and Beaverlodge, Okotoks, Strathmore, Camrose/Wetaskiwin, and Strathcona all received two while the remaining detachments listed received one.

According to the RCMP website, there are 117 detachments operating in Alberta.

Marketing experts will tell you that the key to having people engage with you is to have a story, and to share that story. Well, we happen to agree. After all, we’ve been telling your stories for almost the past 115 years, very successfully.

Not that long ago, the content of the paper used to be full of stories about local service clubs and other groups and organizations. Who they were, what they did, and more. And those stories came right from the clubs themselves.

However, most clubs haven’t done that in years except for our faithful 4-H reporters, and guess what?

We’re hearing that many long-time clubs are losing members, or aging out, and have seemed to just disappear. I’ll bet you the two are connected.

Local Minor Sports organizations used to designate a person to report to the newspaper. What teams there were, who coached them, where they played, who won, who lost. It doesn’t happen now.

And when we try to attend some events, schools and seniors’ facilities FOIP us at the door sometimes. It’s frustrating, to say the least. At least one area school routinely sends us student stories. We are grateful for those submissions, and wish others would be inspired by them.

And I haven’t learned how to clone myself, and don’t have a crystal ball to tell me when important things are happening.

As a community, I’ve heard people wonder how we have disconnected from one another, and I strongly believe that it is partly due to social media, and partly because we’ve let some key communications die out.

Now, I wonder how many people know some service groups, clubs, or organizations in our communities even exist, let alone who they are, what they are about, what they do, and how to join.

Collectively, I think we could learn to be better communicators.

We need to tell our stories, to share our experiences, and let each other know what we’re doing, and how we can help one another and maybe join in if it’s something we’re interested in.

And face it, folks, Facebook isn’t cutting it to keep our groups connected, alive, and thriving. Now, if you want to talk about how well it divides us and spreads misinformation... well that’s another editorial.

“Thoughts and prayers” at a keyboard are no substitute for pitching in and helping in a crisis, or volunteering, or just being with other people to share what’s happening in our lives, good and bad.

Humans are social beings, we need to be around other people. It physically and mentally makes us healthier. These social clubs formed out of that need.

I think we’re all tired all the time because we’re lacking the connections that feed our souls and give us energy. I suspect we’re not even that tired, we are bored. And flipping through social media or going down that rabbit hole filled with the latest fads and “influencers” doesn’t fill the same need that being with people in person does; that working in the community does.

So tell us your stories, and invite people in to share common experiences, for their own good, and the good of the community at large. We miss you.

Alberta’s government is advocating for changes to the broken “catch and release” bail system to protect the law-abiding public.

The federal Criminal Code sets out the rules of bail. Only the federal government has the right to make or amend criminal law. Alberta must work within the existing framework.

When a person is arrested, they are entitled to a bail hearing, regardless of what they have been charged with. The bail hearing will determine whether they can be released from custody until their trial date. This hearing should occur within 24 hours of their arrest. Ultimately, the judiciary determine if bail is allowed, and any conditions the accused must adhere to while out on bail.

The federal government made changes to the bail system that took effect in December 2019. One of these changes is called the “principle of restraint.” According to this principle, the official deciding whether to grant bail makes the decision based on these factors: releasing the accused person at the earliest possible opportunity, and giving that person the least onerous bail conditions that make sense for the circumstances. This includes conditions that the accused can reasonably follow.

Officials deciding whether to grant someone bail must also consider the circumstances of an accused person who is: Indigenous; a member of a vulnerable population who is overrepresented in the criminal justice system and may be at a disadvantage for getting bail.

These changes propagate a “catch and release” system that allows serious offenders back into our communities.

Federal legislation requirements diminish the ability of the judiciary to implement adequate bail conditions for high-risk, repeat offenders. As a result, too many prolific and repeat offenders are released on bail. Releasing these offenders into the community gives them the opportunity to reoffend which threatens the public safety of Albertans.

It’s encouraging to hear the federal Liberals are open to amending the Criminal Code and fixing Canada’s broken “catch and release” bail system.

In January, Premiers from all 13 provinces have signed a letter asking the federal government to strengthen the Criminal Code and fix Canada’s broken “catch and release” bail system.

It’s disappointing, however, to hear them also try and sluff [sic] off some of the responsibility on the provinces, when the provinces are the ones leading the charge on reform. The ball is very much in the Liberals’ court, as only the federal government has the right to amend criminal law.

Our government is advocating for legislation changes that place the protection of the law-abiding public at the centre of all bail decisions. The onus should be on repeat offenders to prove that they should be released on bail.

This “reverse onus” is currently how it is for those appearing for in front of a justice accused of committing a crime while out on bail, or breaching bail conditions Our government has taken several steps to enhance public safety over the past few years. Initiatives include hiring 50 new crown prosecutors, expanding the provincial court, expanding drug treatment courts, increasing the budget for Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) to combat organized crime and illegal guns and gangs, and establishing Rural Alberta Provincial Integrated Defence (RAPID) response duties.

The current “catch and release” system isn’t working to keep families and communities safe.

Alliance WI preparing items for international handicraft competition ing drew their names for our secret sister project.

We had another new member join; our numbers are up to 15 now.

There was interest in the two projects for handicraft competition that takes place in Malaysia in May as part of the ACWW conference (Associated Country Women of the World).

One is a tea tray cloth and the other is a shoe bag.

I will take the entries with me when I go. After judging the items will be sold, so some people in a far off country may take home a little bit of Alliance.

I spent a few days in Brooks with family.

Walter Weber Gave the sermon in church on Sunday. I couldn’t attend since I was in Brooks, where I attended the Brooks Evangelical Free Church. It is a much bigger church than ours with a very large congregation.

The Women’s Institute (WI) met on Wednesday, they had a Valentine’s Tea with a great variety of goodies.

Yvonne Erickson, our District 3 director, came from Edmonton to address our meeting. Tara Grovet accompanied her.

Jamie Carroll was up this week to see her, bring some more cat food, and do some house maintenance.

Holly Telstra arrived on Sunday to take up residence in her new home, the trailer that she purchased from Anita Domosley.

There will be proxy tickets available for the bingo that’s taking place on Friday, Feb. 24, in the Alliance Community Hall. This is your chance to win a ham or other prizes. Tickets may be purchased from library board members.

You won’t need to purchase tickets to attend the meet your neighbour night that the United Church is putting on for Saturday, March 18, in the community hall. Three years ago, the committee was all set up in the hall ready to go ahead with a meet your neighbour night when

COVID-19 hit.

It will be so nice to get out and meet our neighbours face-to-face again; especially since we now have so many new neighbours. This year the menu will be a lasagna supper with salad, garlic bread, and a variety of desserts. A silent auction provides

some of the entertainment.

I say entertainment because there are code names for the bidders. A bidder could be a turkey, a donkey, a blue jay, or some other creative name. It all adds to the fun.

Donations for the silent auction will soon be gratefully accepted.

Forestburg on track with funding and plans to build historic park with Wanda School to be moved onsite Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Forestburg Mayor Blaise Young is walking on cloud nine these days, as he sees plans for a historic park in Forestburg coming closer.

“Twenty-five years ago, I started thinking about this plan,” he says.

The former teacher says he wanted at one time to move the Wanda School into town and use it as an ice cream shop. “Those plans fell through. But as a teacher, I was always amazed at the concept of a one-room school.”

Young says he’s seeing more and more interest in local history, but thinks that it has to be presented as a kind of living history, with things to see and things to do, to capture people’s attention. “My desire to save the Wanda School probably started about five years ago,” Young says.

That’s right around the time that Forestburg got notice of the mine closing. “That was a scary time for us.”

Immediately the village lost families, including those with school-aged kids.

They also banded together with other coal communities and participated in the Battle River Economic Opportunities Committee. It’s a collaborative partnership between County of Paintearth, Flagstaff County, Forestburg, Heisler, Castor, Coronation, and Halkirk, and the surrounding region. Through the partnership and collaboration, grant funding became available for these communities in transition, who were losing employment opportunities for their residents due to closures and operations changes coming about from the coal reduction policies at the federal and provincial level.

Young said during this period he developed a plan in his head for an historic park. “I always felt the Wanda School House was a key part of it.” He says the project to build tourism wouldn’t just benefit Forestburg, or even Flagstaff County. “The Donalda badlands are the most unrecognized and unrepresented treasures in Alberta in

my opinion.” And, he adds, he has Donalda’s unofficial support for any plan that includes their region.

Young says eventually his plan included a close look at the state of the school, the cornerstone of his historic park. “So many people told me it couldn’t be moved, that we’d wreck it trying; that it was a waste of money.”

But when he finally visited the site, he found it was not the case. “The ratio of roof to building is just perfect. This 24’ by 24’ building, with a small porch, is structurally sound.

“I took a look with a local contractor, and we discovered the building had virgin fir, and was still perfectly square, like the day it was built.”

He says the plan is not just to move it, but to restore it to its original structure, using the original building materials.

He says there was once 2-5,000 oneroom schools in Alberta, but they are disappearing. “Wanda is one of the few still in-situ.”

Young says as the plan developed, a site for the park had to be found. As it happens, the village owns a piece of land on the east side of town, right off Highway 53, with plenty of room for both the school house, and a tourist information centre, including washrooms for travellers.

Young says thanks to Jack and Lily Kirschman, funding has been put aside for the project, along with a total reconstruction of a horse-drawn school bus (and shelter for it.)

“We’ve received support from so many communities and counties on this idea,” Young says. “The site will be a true gem, just off the beaten path.”

He says there are many local, rural sites that could eventually come to be part of the attraction, not the least of which are local graveyards, popular with those searching their family histories.

He adds that he’s re-

ally encouraged by the recent revival of the Flagstaff Historical Society, under Flagstaff County Councillor Jeff Eckstrand, along with other interested people from all around the region.

“It’s good that we are doing this now.

Even a couple of generations down the path would make it more difficult.”

Young says he’s grateful to the families in the area who have kept up the Wanda School, as it’s been closed as a school for a very long time. “It was used as kind of a community meeting place, a place to go to play cards.

“There’s been some vandalism over the years, but luckily no structural damage.”

The school was small, it could only fit 12 students, he says. Young is hoping there are still people or families out there with stories and maybe even photos from those who attended the school.

“We’ve lost some of the names of the original homesteaders,” he says.

The project is coming under the purview of the Village and the Forestburg Community Development and Promotion Society, which has 12 or 13 members of all ages who actively fundraise.

“We’re a licenced, non-profit group.

We’re not able to raise capital funding for the project but we can apply for an raise operating funds once it’s up and running.”

Young says Forestburg Village Council has agreed on the project, and its name: The Jeanne Lougheed Historic Park.

“MLA Jackie Lovely suggested the name. Lougheed was the youngest daughter of Dr. Rogers, one of Forestburg’s earliest physicians, says Young, the first to practice at the Forestburg Cottage Hospital. She was one of the first babies born in Forestburg, around 1928 (the first was in 1925, he thinks).

“We thought it would be an appropriate name, and her family agreed,”says Young.

married Peter Lougheed, and became Alberta’s first lady. She was survived by her children Stephen, Andrea, Pamela, and Joe, and they have agreed that naming the new historical park after her would be appropriate.

Young says a delegation paid a special visit last year to Premier Jason Kenney and then Culture Minister Ron Orr in early October.

“Premier Kenney and Orr made the provincial funding we received possible.” The project was the successful application for a CFEP large stream grant, in the amount of $275,000. Funding will be used to develop the lot, for the school house move, and tourism/rest area, with water services to be extended under Highway 53.

“Really, though, I have a regional vision for the development of tourism.

We will want every community to participate.

“Our region has an incredible amount of history, but it’s not shown, and it’s not known.

“Take Big Knife Park as an example.

We have people that even use that name, but I doubt if they know where the name comes from.

“Take Bashaw; did you know it was lost in a poker game one night?

“Look at the Donalda badlands. They are incredible, but completely undeveloped.

“This would be one heck of a boost to our economy.”

Young says when he started his research into the project he discovered something. “One thing became obvious to me; we are left out of provincial tourism. Take Banff, Jasper, the Highway 2 corridor, and Drumheller, and that’s it.

“I see this as a boon to the entire region, and all the surrounding counties and municipalities. We aren’t in this for Forestburg. If we can get people here, it will benefit the entire region.

“We need people to come and get entertained and educated about this part of Alberta. Our part of Alberta.”

Wheat Kings make strong run to finish third overall in league Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings faced the St. Paul Canadiens at home on Saturday, Feb. 10, and more than just a win was at stake.

Last week St. Paul, Killam, and Vermilion were in a three-way tie for second place in the league.

All three teams were looking for a win to end the regular season. Vermilion had a win on Friday against Cold Lake and another Saturday against Vegreville to jump into first place. St. Paul had a win against Cold Lake on Friday.

Wainwright lost to the Bandits Friday to clinch second place, while Saturday night’s battle in Killam determined third.

St. Paul scored in the second minute of the game to go ahead 1-0 on Saturday, before Kyler Bergseth scored the tying goal for Killam, from Trey Forster and Ashton Kelly.

The tie stayed in place all through the second period, which saw no scoring but plenty of action. Killam was unable to capitalize on back-toback-to-back tripping penalties against St. Paul, but held firm when the calls started going against them later in the period.

Killam blasted ahead in the third period with Bergseth’s second goal of the evening, this time from Kobe Charchun and Matthew Pfeffer.

The Wheat Kings went ahead by two, seconds later, on a goal by Chase Rombough, from Hayden McIndoe and Landon Kelndorfer, to make it 3-1.

Carter Burton scored Killam’s fourth and final goal of the night, from

Charchun and Pfeffer, to make it a 4-1 final, clinching third place with a win.

Marcinkowski got the win in goal for Killam.

Head Coach Bob Charchun says, “Our guys have had an incredible second half to keep pace with the top of the league.

“We set a team goal of going 9-2 in the second half to hopefully have a crack at the top two.

Well, I was wrong on that. We went 10-1 and squeaked out third place as we had one more win than St. Paul.”

Charchun adds, “I thought we played a patient, smart game and stuck with it after a very below-average first period.

“Trey Forster has been a dominant force on the back end and is eating up big minutes with many guys going up front.

“We missed the first overall by two points that's how tight the race was. We finished with the best goals-against in the league. There's no trophy for that, but it's a feather in the cap for the guys as goaltending and team defence has been solid down the stretch. I have said this before but our depth has been impressive.

“We have many guys in different roles and paying close attention to the details of the strengths of their game-that is giving us success.”

During Saturday’s matchup, the top two goalies in the league were facing each other. St. Paul’s Ethin Campbell has a 1.91 GAA, compared to Marcinkowski’s 1.99 GAA, but Marcinkowski has the best Save Percentage in the league, at .936. Both

have five shutouts this season, although Marcinkowski has played more games, 25 to 13, and has twice the time played. “Marz is the best goalie in the league and has been a rock,” Charchun says.

“Overall, we are healthy and feel ready to take on Cold Lake in the first round. We are not taking them for granted and we want to gain momentum from game to game.

“There is a long road to go and it takes a lot of sacrifice to advance to each round.

“Our guys are ready and excited to go as deep as we can. We want to ride the momentum of being 18-3 in our last 21 games and keep our strong play and good habits going as we start the playoffs.

“We started the year at 5-5, so we have come a long way as a team.”

Charchun says Kohl Forster is very close to 100 per cent. “He has looked good in practice and the one game he played in.

“We expect him back for playoffs and will definitely protect his minutes as he eases back in.

He has worked hard to get healthy and we are very glad he is back.”

Playoffs start this week; the Wheat Kings will take on the sixth-place Cold Lake Ice at home for Games 1 and 2.

The regular season finished with the Tigers in first, Bisons in second, and Wheat Kings in third, followed by the Canadiens in fourth.

The Lloydminster Bandits finished fifth, Cold Lake sixth, Onion Lake seventh, and the Vegreville Rangers eighth.

Well hello folks. As I am writing the column, it is Tuesday, so happy Valentine’s Day to everyone.

Today the weather is beautiful. Blue sky, sunshine, and no cold winds.

How many of you are rushing out to buy your loved one a card and chocolates or a great bottle of wine, fancy beer, whiskey, and etcetera?

By the way, have you heard of an Alberta whiskey named ‘Centennial Whiskey?' It is whiskey that has actual maple syrup infused and has a yummy flavour.

Some friends introduced us to it and it is lovely.

For people who are not big-time wine drinkers, they now have a wine named "Roscato."

It comes in red and blush form and is a "little" sparkly and actually feels like you are drinking grape juice. It is quite popular. There is something for everybody.

I recall a few years ago where I wrote about the history of Valentine's Day, so I won't repeat myself.

Just know that it is cele-

brated in various fashions all over the world.

This whole week will probably be celebrated in one way or another as Valentine’s.

Our library had two days of young kids decorating valentine-shaped sugar cookies. I imagine kids at school are all busy decorating some sort of Valentine wishes to their parents or a special loved one.

I know our librarian loves when some cute little child presents her with a homemade valentine heart. They all get posted on her desk wall.

Our best valentine news was the birth of our latest grandchild, Erika Jenn Matthews, born Monday at Wainwright Hospital.

She weighed six pounds, 14 ounces and is a glorious redhead. Parents are Harley and Justine Matthews of Hardisty and Justine's parents are Ginette and Kim Dammann of Killam.

My understanding was a bikini meant that the hair removal was the hair peeking out the sides of your bathing suit or your itsy bitsy, teenie, weenie bikini. So the gentleman was on the right track.

Now what about a Brazilian wax? What does that include? The ladies were not totally sure, but felt it included much more removal but exactly where? I did a little research and it includes the whole bikini area even between the cheeks. One article suggested you have to flip over and get on

Giving back to community comes full circle with donation of pet quilts to local dog rescue Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Two Camrose women recently donated 28 handmade pet blankets/quilts to Daysland’s Canine Love Dog Rescue.

Gail Felt of Camrose has been quilting for many years, and loves doing charity work, and Liz Petruch just started during COVID. Petruch says their goal at the beginning of December was to use up their scraps, “But what could we do with them?

“We started contacting animal shelters

and rescue agencies and we were overwhelmed with the positive response we received.

“To date we have dropped off 165 blankets to six different agencies; Canine Love is our most recent.”

Canine Love Founder Deb Reynolds says the blankets are beautiful, and she’s grateful for the donation. “Some of the blankets went to our more well-behaved rescues. The rest will be sold to support Canine Love at their store, House of Paws, in Daysland.” The store raises funds for the rescue’s operations. Petruch says

once people heard what she and Felt were doing, they started receiving donations of materials from family, friends, and even complete strangers.

She says giving back to the community, for her, goes back to Joyce George (for-

merly of Killam) and Josephine Ilnicki (from Round Hill).

“These two long-time community minded women and dear friends gave me their machines and material; they inspired me to give back.”

Unfortunate news for Lougheed and area as Ma 'n Pa Restaurant has announced they will be closing by the end of February.

It's sad to see that so shortly after their opening.

Many people enjoyed their meals and expressed their sadness about this announcement. They will be missed. All the best for their future endeavours.

Branch 55 in Sedgewick recently transformed into a catered rental facility. If you're looking for a space to host an event with catered meals this may be perfect for you.

The libraries in Flagstaff County are hosting a “Coffee and Babes” for moms with children between newborn and 12-months old for casual conversations about motherhood, babies, and life.

Family Day weekend is an extra-special day for Alberta families eager to try their hands at ice fishing without having to purchase a licence.

Saturday, Feb. 18,

through to Monday, Feb. 20 is Family Fishing weekend.

For those who don’t mind a little drive, there are Kids Can Catch events planned at Pigeon Lake or Sylvan Lake. In these events, volunteers are on-hand to help teach

new fishermen and women proper ways to bait a hook, where to drop a line, and what to do once you cash a fish.

There’s even an Ice Fishing Photo Contest sponsored by the Alberta Conservation Association. The contest runs

from Feb. 1 to March 1, and it open to all Alberta residents over the age of 18. Each entrant can sub-

mit up to three photos in all.

FAITH COLUMN: Walk in forgiveness yourself LEST WE FORGET

Recently I was reading a passage in my Bible on prayer that Jesus was teaching. What He was teaching was radical, which as a pastor is a word that concerns me.

Why? Too often we see pictures in the news of radical situations or of people out of control that are described as radical.

This is exactly how the religious leaders viewed Jesus! Most of us are familiar with the Lord’s Prayer, but read this part slowly “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

In Jesus’ time, the only way your sins, which is what the word debts stands for, could be forgiven was to go to the temple and offer the appropriate sacrifice to the temple priest. Jesus comes and says anyone can pray to God, anywhere and if you ask, He will forgive you.

Radical in that time, but then Jesus continues a couple verses later in

Matthew 6:14, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

This is even more radical! Jesus is saying here is that if you want God to forgive you, then you need to be willing to forgive others. Forgiveness is one of, if not the most important life changing things you will do. Unforgiveness leads to bitterness, which if left long

enough will affect every area of life, including physical health.

The antidote to bitterness is forgiveness. Jesus is saying we all owe a debt to God we cannot pay, therefore ask and He will be willing to forgive.

But, if you want His forgiveness, you need to be willing to walk in forgiveness yourself.

It was a busy weekend as the East Central Senior Hockey League is close to wrapping up the regular season.

Friday night saw a highscoring game in Coronation as the Hughenden Jets flew in to take on the Royals.

The two played to an 8-7 win for Coronation.

The Sabres travelled to Provost to take on the Combines, with Sedgewick coming out the wrong end of a 4-2 final.

The Delburne Outlaws travelled to Stettler in another high scoring game, where the Imperials took a 5-4 wind.

Play resumed Saturday

when the Forestburg Flyers travelled to Irma to take on the Aces, playing to a 5-1 win for Irma.

Sedgewick hosted the Oyen Eagles on Saturday at home, where they played a hard-fought overtime 5-4 win for Oyen.

The gap widened between first and second place as Oyen has 29 points to Sedgewick’s 21, while Provost is close behind, in third with 20 points.

Irma is in fourth with 19 points, and Stettler’s a hair’s breadth behind at 18 and fifth place.

Hughenden sits in sixth place with 14 points, Delburne is in seventh with 8

points, Forestburg in eighth with 7 points, and Coronation on the bottom with just five points.

Unfortunately, as at Press time, game sheets had not been uploaded, so who scored what is unavailable to us at this time.

The final week of the regular season with see Forestburg travel to Stettler to take on the Imperials, and Irma to Oyen to take on the Eagles.

Sedgewick with host the Provost Combines on Friday at home.

Hughenden will play their final game on Saturday night, in Hughenden, as they take on the Royals.

Between the roots: It’s a Go-Pher control

Growing up in rural Alberta, one thing kids like to do with their free time is shoot gophers.

As kids we never thought of the impact these rodents would have on our family or friends' land. We were having fun. Little did we know, we were helping them out!

Gopher populations have been an ongoing problem and one control method remaining in place is gunpowder.

An important step to controlling Richardson Ground Squirrels (RGS) is to know their life cycle and behaviour.

With spring still far away but fast approaching, now is the time to start gathering rodenticide and create a plan to battle these rodents.

Males will typically start to emerge in mid-February, two weeks before the adult females. Females will start feeding two weeks after their emergence, which would be the most effective time to start management practices (mid-March).

In March 2022, Health Canada ended the sales of 2 per cent Liquid Strychnine in Alberta and following in March 2023, Strychnine possession and use will be prohibited.

Depending on your situation, you may have relied on Strychnine to control gophers due to its high efficacy and because it’s user friendly.

Health Canada recognized issues with Strychnine and its ability to impact nontargeted wildlife, which is why they have taken this tool out of the toolbox.

Flagstaff County stopped supplying Strychnine in March 2022.

So, what is left in the toolbox? There are

still many other means to control gophers in Alberta.

Some methods are more laborious than others, including traps that we sell at the County, and domestic and commercial baits and poisons such as Rozol, Ground Force, ZP Rodent Bait, and Gardex Rodent Bait Blocks.

Another great but costly domestic option is the Giant Destroyer. Depending on the infestation, these methods might be impractical or not economically feasible.

For larger infestations some common control methods are fumigants.

Two types include phostoxin tablets (aluminum phosphide) and anhydrous ammonia.

Phostoxin tablets require a Farmer Pesticide Certificate with a rodenticide endorsement in order to purchase and use.

This method is economically feasible and is becoming more popular with the recent registration changes with Strychnine.

Flagstaff County will be hosting a Farmer Pesticide Course in February and March.

If you’re already certified and are trying to procure this product, Kneehill Soils in Three Hills has a good supply.

Anhydrous ammonia has been used for many years and is very effective and feasible.

However, it does come with some challenges, including certification of the applicator and handling equipment

(gophinator).

If you are interested in this form of control, you can talk to your local retailer for training and where to purchase the equipment and anhydrous.

Aside from fumigants, another option would be Rocon Mustard Seed Foam which is an asphyxiant.

This method is laborious but has the benefit of being economically feasible and effective.

I would also argue that this form of con-

trol would be the safest of any rodenticide; it’s a food grade foam with the ability to be used from playgrounds to pastures.

Flagstaff County Agricultural Service Board has agreed to supply mustard seed foam and kits to County landowners at cost recovery.

Flagstaff County is committed to continuing to help producers get the required education to control pests on their own land.

Some junior and senior high students in Hughenden Public School are now giving an opportunity for elementary students to improve their volleyball skills. Every second Thursday in the school gym at lunch, a group of students teach young athletes the basic skills and practice developing their competency.

William Stringer, a Grade 11 student in Hughenden and the spearhead of Little Spikers, says that there is a whole group of older students that “Love the game more than anything and just want younger athletes to find friendship in the sport like they did.”

Young says his vision for the future of the project has many phases, at least seven. “Phase one was getting it off the ground; that’s done.”

He says phase two is documenting 100 years of coal mining in the region.

“Our mines were atypical. We had land reclamation before anyone even used that word. Land owners campaigned the companies to turn their useless coal fields into beautiful pasture land.

“Our coal was geophysically different from that in the Crowsnest Pass or BC. And our mine was a huge part of the economy as were others in eastern Alberta.

“We would love to have coal mining artifacts, and even some of the fossils people may have found on the ground nearby.

“One of my dreams is to have a bronze statue of a coal miner created

by Don Begg, an internationally known sculptor from Cochrane.

“His work would be an attraction unto itself.”

Phase three of his plan would be to develop a link to Anthony Henday and his First Nations guides. “We have buffalo kill sites off the Battle River. We have the legend of the Cree Warrior Big Man, who fought the Blackfoot Warrior Knife to the death on what is now known as Big Knife Creek.

“There’s another potential bronze statue.”

Young says, “There is tremendous

history here. It’s presently untold, unknown; but the potential is there.”

He says he thinks the project could extend all the way to Hardisty, to benefit all four surrounding counties, and all municipalities. Young says he’s aware of the great work that area museums and historical societies have done throughout the region, and he’s hoping this project will help tie them altogether into a destination for tourism.

In Forestburg, he says, “We would like to build an incredible, visually interactive site.”

Young has heard there’s an old abandoned chapel somewhere south of Daysland he’d love to add to the site.

Forestburg has rebounded since those dark days five years ago.

According to a 2021 Municipal Population Estimate from Statistics Canada, its now the biggest municipality in Flagstaff County, with a population of 916 as of last July.

The next highest centre would be Killam, at 868, then Sedgewick, at 823.

Young thinks that’s because the village has attracted some new business ventures, and attributes part of the increase in population to the innovative new scholarship program at Forestburg School, again thanks to the generosity of the Kirschmans.

Thanks to grant funding, Young’s dream will soon become reality.

A mover has been found who will take the school to its new location, but much work at the new site will need to be done before that will happen.

Funding has also come through BREOC for the project.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are advertising their annual Depot Youth Camp, which runs in two sessions, July 17 to 21, and 24 to 28.

RCMP is now accepting applications from youth in Grades 11 and 12, ages 16 to 19.

It’s a “once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Depot prior to submitting an RCMP application.”

The program offers participation and observations of routine police training activities such as drill, driver simulator training, firearms, police scenarios, fitness training, touring the RCMP Heritage Centre, troop graduation, and more.

Students selected for the RCMP Youth Camp will have the opportunity to form a co-ed group, reflective of any typical RCMP cadet troop.

“By the end of the week-long camp, the group will develop a good understanding of the career possibilities offered by the RCMP.” Applicants are selected based on academic achievement, fitness, and interest in a career in policing.
