DaysArts long-awaited season starts with powerful and moving performance ‘Prisoner of Tehran’ Leslie Cholowsky Editor
Daysland’s Palace Theatre was the setting for Prisoner of Tehran last Wednesday, Feb. 9. As the opening performance in DaysArts 2022 Concert series, it packed a big punch. Prisoner of Tehran is based off an award-winning memoir of the same name by Marina Nemat, and represents her terrifying experience as a teenager in Iran in the late ‘70s as that country underwent a revolution, as the Shah fled the country and was succeeded by Ayatollah Khomeini. As a Christian teenager, Nemat enjoyed a happy and carefree childhood, and was a normal teenager experiencing the same
things as her western counterparts. With the revolution in Iran, Nemat saw her freedoms destroyed, one by one, and was eventually imprisoned at age 16, where she endured unspeakable conditions and even torture. As her friends were executed, Nemat was saved only because one of her prison guards wanted to marry her. Cynthia Croker played the role of Nemat during the evening, telling her story as though Croker had lived it herself. The Motus O dance group, represented Wednesday by four dancers dressed in black, wove in and around Nemat’s story in a powerful performance that brought a tear to more than one
eye at its conclusion. It’s a story worth telling, and worth hearing, made more powerful and more dramatic in the way it is presented. The audience was left with a single message; to be kind, to let love guide your actions in the face of evil and injustice. The performance was followed by a short question and answer period by Motus O lead Jack Langenhuizen and Croker. The series will continue on Thursday, Feb. 24, on a more light hearted note as DaysArts welcomes Sarah Hagen in her onewoman musical comedy.
