Remembering Jake
The annual Hockey Weekend was held in Sedgewick and Killam this past weekend, hosted by Battle River Knights Minor Hockey. Saturday night's game at the Killam Arena was held in honour of Jake Lazarick, who passed away tragically this past July. All three BRK U18 teams, one female and two male, split into two teams for the nightʼs match-up. Pictured at the puck drop in a touching scene are Jakeʼs mom Marcy Lazarick and players Lucas Backen and Teague Wallace. More hockey weekend photos on Page 29.
This weekend was filled with action in Sedgewick and Killam during the Battle River Knights Minor Hockey Days from Friday, Jan. 27 to Sunday, Jan. 28. Games were played in both the Sedgewick Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre and Killam Memorial Arena over the three days, with every team in the league playing at least one game. As part of the special event, the Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings played Friday in Sedgewick against the Vermilion Tigers and Sunday in Killam against the Wainwright Bisons. The Sedgewick Sabres were also in action against Irma on Saturday. The BRK girls dominated the ice on Friday, keeping the puck in Lloydminster's end, and putting forward a strong defence all game. Shots on goal were 35-7 for BRK. Cabrie Tanton started the scoring, ending up with two goals on the night. Danica Boger got two goals and an assist. Avery Dolany scored two goals. Ericka Zimmer, Emma Galletly, and Keeley Sorken got one goal each, with Zimmer
and Sorken each earning two assists and Ella Younger earning one assist. The BRK U15 girls won 9-0 earning Maddy Eckstrand a shutout in goal. Both arenas were busy on Saturday, with BRK's night ending in a U18 game from all three BRK U18 teams, one female and two male, splitting up to play a special game they dedicated as "The Jake Lazarick Memorial Game" which started at 6:30 in Killam. The game was played in memory of Lazarick, who passed away in July. The team also retired Lazarick's number (#12) and the proceeds of the game's 50/50 was donated to the Jake Lazarick Scholarship Fund at Central High Sedgewick Public School. In an emotional scene, Jake’s mom Marcy Lazarick was on hand for the ceremonial puck drop prior to the game. Other results and statistics will be published in the February 8 edition due to early press deadlines for this week’s paper.
