Ryley Lions stepping up to support Food Bank Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

The Ryley Lions Club delivered the first of four $500 check donation to the Tofield and Area Food Bank on Feb. 14. Club Secretary Andre Nimchuk said the group made a $500 donation in Nov., then at their Jan. meeting decided they wanted to do more. “We know there’s a need and there’s more people (using the food bank) from Ryley these days,” he said during a phone interview. “We thought if we make the donation, they can buy what they need.” Nimchuk said the Lions decided to continue their support after the Nov. donation with four additional donations, in Feb., April, May and June this year for $500 each. Tofield Food Bank Chair Dawn Arnold said her group is very grateful for the Lions’ generosity. “Wow. We are so thankful. Our need in Ryley is increasing substantially and we can partially use this (money) for mileage for our deliveries to Ryley and the other part will go to hamper supplies,” she said. Arnold explained that the food bank makes regular hamper deliveries to Ryley each month covering 42 total kilometres there and back. “Sometimes we have so much we have to send two vehicles,” Arnold said. “We have many clients who don’t have access to vehicles out there and they still need food.” Ryley food bank recipients are responsible for 23 percent of the total amount of hampers that go out which Arnold said is increasing every month.

Tofield School basketball teams have been working hard in their season. Tofield’s Junior High boys team has competed in the finals of both tournaments they have entered this year, finishing second at the New Norway/ Hay Lakes tournament. The team won silver in Hay Lakes as well at OLMP. The boys are currently undefeated in the division 2 league. The Senior High is also undefeated within their division 2A league, while winning games against the Sedgewick and Wainwright teams.

The Senior High Quint Basketball Tournament was held again this year at Tofield, Bawlf, Hay Lakes, OLMP and New Norway with a total of 36 teams; 18 girls and 18 boys. Next year marks the tournament's 25th anniversary. Though the girls and boys played especially well, the boys lost in the Consolation final. The Senior and Junior Girls teams have had a great turn out in their numbers and are continuing to further their skills on the court with each game they play.
