Magical Family Day event held in Viking

Mugsy the juggler and magician was on hand to show off his talents to a crowd of excited children and families alike during the Family Day festivities at the Viking Carena on Monday, Feb. 20. Along with the show, there were skaters enjoying the ice, kids running in the play structure, free hot dogs and hot chocolate from the Viking Lions Club, other delicious meals from the Carena kitchen, and outside were wagon rides around the Carena. The Town of Viking was abuzz with entertainment during the Family Day event, held at the Viking Carena on Monday, Feb. 20.

While wagon rides took eager residents on a ride around the Carena, inside was a flurry of activity. The play

centre was open for kids to run around, while the ice was open for a public skate. Residents were constantly on and off the ice throughout the day, seeing to many having a great bit of fun skating about.

Just before lunch, Mugsy took the stage to perform show off his juggling mastery, as well as perform some magic tricks that awed the crowd.

Not only was Mugsy talented at these two events, he was also riding around on a unicycle, and later had fun creating balloon animals and figures.

The Viking Lions Club were on hand to pass out some free hot chocolate and hot dogs to hungry visitors, especially those who worked up an appetite in the play structure and on the ice.

On display were the colouring con-

test entries, organized by entry age.

Many colourful depictions of the town were viewed, some with interesting colour options that gave some good inspiration in case any buildings in town were looking for some new colourful ideas for their buildings.

The event was well attended and celebrated by many families from Viking and the surrounding areas.

Mugsy the Juggler was on hand to show off his talents for juggling and magic, as well as on a unicycle. The ice was open for public skating during the day, which many families took advantage of. Those brave enough to face the cold weather went on a lovely wagon ride around the Carena. It was an enjoyable way to spend the holiday.

WORD ON THE STREET Fraudulent cheques deposited On February 13, police conducted a check on a subject who is currently on curfew conditions.

When police attended the subject’s residence it was determined the subject was not at home.

Wayne Scott has been charged with Section 145(5)(a) Criminal Code, fail to comply with a release order. He will be appearing in Vegreville Provincial Court at a later date.

Also, this day, police learned that Wayne Scott had failed to attend court in Vegreville to answer to unrelated charges previously laid by Viking RCMP. He was arrested by police and released to appear in Vegreville Provincial Court at a later date.

On February 14, police responded to an erratic driver complaint. The vehicle was located and the driver provided breath samples, resulting in a pass. The driver was advised of the complaint and warned of his driving pattern.

On February 16, police received a complaint of an erratic driver. Patrols were made to the area and no vehicle matching the description provided was located.

On February 16, police received a complaint of a theft of diesel fuel from a rural location. The complainant advised they store diesel at the location for the equipment they use. This matter is still under investigation.

That afternoon, police received information of a fraud. The complainant advised that he had cheques left in his vehicle when it as stolen and they have been cashed. This investigation is ongoing.

On February 17, police responded to a complaint of an assault. The complainant stated he observed a group of people walking down the street in an altercation. The subjects were located and spoken to, and it was determined the females got into a fight but were refusing to cooperate with police.

That same morning, information was received of a suspicious vehicle that entered private property.

The vehicle was observed on surveillance to enter the property drive around and leave. Nothing was taken or damaged.

That afternoon, police assisted a subject who was trying to remove registration off of her vehicle. The complainant sold her vehicle to her excommon-law and wanted to remove the insurance and registration. The complainant was advised to provide a bill of sale to the registry to prove that vehicle was sold.

Later that same afternoon, police received a request from the Golden-Field RCMP in British Columbia with assistance in locating a subject who currently has outstanding warrants in British Columbia. This matter is still under investigation.

That evening, police attended a motor vehicle collision. The driver of a Mazda CX3 was travelling on highway 26 and struck a moose. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

On February 18, police received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle was parked on the roadside with no occupants around. The vehicle was not located.

During this time period, police also dealt with several motor vehicle collisions. They also issued violation tickets and warnings for various traffic offences.

Police would like to remind the public, when

reporting a crime or suspicious activity, it is recommended that you either call 911 or the Viking RCMP Complaint Line at 780-336-3434. This will ensure you get a timely response from the member who is currently on duty.

Reporting a crime by leaving a message on the Viking RCMP Administrative Line is not recommend as it is not routinely checked by the members but is checked by the administrative staff during normal business hours only.

Also, calling or messaging members directly on their personal phones is not recommended because if they are not currently on duty, they then in turn, have to contact the member on shift, which also delays the response time.

JOHN’S RANT Rouleau report really no surprise Well what did you do on the Sunday afternoon of a long weekend? For myself I spent the afternoon wading through the summary of the Report of the Public Inquiry into the 2022 Public Order Emergency.

This is the five-volume mega read on the Freedom Convoy and the Federal government’s use of the Emergency Act. The summary (Vol. 1) totals out at 276 pages.

In his report The Honourable Paul S. Rouleau, the commissioner of the Inquiry agreed the Federal Liberals and Justin Trudeau were justified in using the Emergency Act to quell the threeweek protests that clogged Ottawa’s downtown streets last February.

Now it should come as no surprise that a Liberal appointed Ontario judge would find no issue with the Liberal deity Trudeau using a big bat to swat a flea.

After all, those mean nasty truckers were clogging downtown streets with their honking horns, bouncy castles and generally happy-go-lucky demonstrators protesting pandemic restrictions many of them disagreed with.

This fight had been festering in the Canadian public ever since the government started issuing various restrictions to try and combat the pandemic and forcing people to take a vaccine many were unsure off.

There were also many mixed messages produced.

The vaccines worked… then maybe they just helped a bit, masks were good… masks didn’t do any good.

And Trudeau had no problem calling these people names and he and members of his government did refuse to meet with the demonstrators even though both Conservative and NDP elected members did.

Rouleau did call out Trudeau for this, suggesting his ill-advised outburst didn’t help the cause of unity in the country.

But in fairness to Rouleau, he had a narrow set of parameters to make his decision.

He was to look at the Freedom Convoy and its effects on Ottawa. Did it pose a threat to Canada’s national security? Did it threaten Canada’s economic security? Did blockades, while not necessarily related but similar in cause, at border crossings at Windsor, Ont., and Coutts, Ab., pose similar issues?

For 2,000 pages of his report, Rouleau throws security forces from the Ottawa Police Service, the Ottawa Police Services Board, the OPP, the RCMP and the Parliamentary Protective Service under the bus for their lack of communications in coming up with a cohesive plan to remove the blockade.

He also chastised them for failing to realize the size and scope of the oncoming protest as it made its way across the country despite there being lots of intelligence on it.

But Rouleau couldn’t really look at the underlying causes of the convoy in making his recommendations, even though the report does provide a good deal of background information on the build up to the Freedom Convoy.

For one and half years as Canadians were hamstrung by various restrictions levelled at both the provincial and federal level, truckers were free to move goods and services across the U.S, border without having to show proof of vaccinations.

Many truckers, because of the nature of their jobs, couldn't get vaccinations.

They were essential services to Canada bringing fresh fruit and vegetables from Florida, California, Arizona

and New Mexico… trundling needed auto parts back and forth from manufacturers in Ontario to auto factories in the U.S. But suddenly as restrictions were easing in 2021, they were forced to show proof of vaccination when they crossed the border.

This was a decision directly made by Trudeau and his henchperson at Health Canada, Theresa Tam. That put many truckers out of work.

It was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, leading to the convoy being formed from various locations across the country.

I hesitated for a long time before I took the vaccine that had only been developed in months. Simple research on most vaccines showed they take years of development and trials before being put into human bodies.

But not with Covid. It was whisked out in less than a year.

Now having got the vaccine I have suffered no outward after effects. However, I know several people who have not had the shot to this day and they haven’t had so much as a headache in the three years since the pandemic began.

I had no problem wearing a mask when it was legislated to do so, but I can understand some people feeling that it also infringed on their rights.

And I understand the arguments from those who complied with all the restrictions quite readily and argued those who opposed them were selfish and not looking out for others.

It was a no win situation and I fully expect the Liberal government realized this. They used the pandemic as a wedge issue doing their very best to divide the country. Rouleau actually points this out stating there was too

much politics at play while the ultimate decisions about what to do were being made.

The result was they got a convoy which overwhelmed the nation’s capital.

The Federal government’s never had issue with railway blockades a few years earlier when protestors disrupted rail traffic across the country setting fire on train tracks in southern Ontario and Alberta. They had no problem with people demonstrating for Black Lives Matter and wanting to defund the police department which would allow total anarchy in the streets. They had no problem when pipeline construction projects were targeted by demonstrators resulting in damage and disruption.

On no! Those were righteous, lefty causes!

But damn, bring those stinky, noisy trucks into downtown Ottawa with the bouncy castles and hot tubs and something drastic had to be done.

Trudeau was the cause of this issue.

He’s been let off the hook by the inquiry.

It was no surprise. Trudeau seems to have a teflon coating when it comes to dodging controversy. He gets in positions of conflict yet comes out smelling like a rose.

So this voluminous report will now be pushed to a back corner office where it will possibly be studied by some academics in future years long after Trudeau is removed from the scene.

In summary, a lot of taxpayer money has been wasted in the time it took to hold this inquiry and write the report.

The appointment of a Liberal judge signalled a free ride right from the start.

Study shows low support for Alberta Police Force Leslie Cholowsky Staff Reporter

Alberta Municipalities (AM) has released the results of a new public opinion survey from late January 2023, and says, “It confirms what our association has been saying for almost a year: most Albertans see no reason to replace the RCMP with a new provincial police service.”

AM says, “A resounding 85 per cent of respondents said that if the Government of Alberta insisted on going ahead with the creation of an Alberta Police Service, the matter needed to be put to a provincial vote.”

The survey says almost two-thirds of Albertans surveyed think the Provincial should spend its time, effort, and resources on community service supports for mar-

ginalized Albertans, struggling with homelessness, addictions, or mental health issues.

There was also broad support behind increasing spending to improve current policing efforts in communities across Alberta, and to improve the provincial justice system.

“The results of this survey paint a very clear picture,” says AM President Cathy Heron.

“Albertans are simply not interested in a discussion or review of community policing in Alberta that is based on political aims or recommendations from the 2020 Fair Deal Panel Report.

“Municipalities are interested in discussing the delivery of community policing with the primary goal of enhancing public safety.”

AM has been calling on

the Province to “develop a Public Safety Task Force to explore and address root causes of crime, as well as weaknesses in Alberta’s current justice system.”

Heron says, “Our member communities believe a province-wide task force is urgently needed, and they want to see it happen now.”

In the survey results, it says that people living outside Edmonton and Calgary identified the Justice System as one of the key causes of crime.

Respondents agreed both that improvements to social services are needed and improvements to the justice system.

Only 15 per cent of people asked said that replacing the RCMP would have a positive impact on crime in Alberta. Over two-thirds said it would-

A group of Ryley residents met Feb. 16 to begin the planning process to organize and collect signatures from Village residents to have Councillor and Village Mayor Nik Lee removed from council.

M. James Wilson introduced himself to the gathering of about 16 interested villagers and stated he had heard from residents a recall was wanted so he decided to head it up.

“But it will take all of us,” he added.

“The process is complicated but we need about 195 signatures representing 40 per cent of the registered voters in Ryley,” he added.

“Our target is 225 signatures”

He said on April 18, the group could take its plan to petition to the Village CAO and that person has seven days to declare the issue valid and then the group has 60 days to collect the necessary names and signatures for the petition to be declared valid.

“The trick,” said Wilson, “is to get the signatures and make sure they are all valid.”

He said once the petition was declared valid by the CAO, the Councillor would be removed at the next scheduled council meeting.

Under the Municipal Act, which was recently changed, there would be no appeal or any other options, the councillor would be removed from the meeting. The councillor could run for re-election again if a future by-election was to be

held.

Wilson said a previous petition had been determined to be invalid because of some incorrect addresses.

He said the best route to get the petition valid was to use the land description from the land description on peoples’ tax notices.

Wilson said he would prepare the petition plan and present it to the CAO on April 18.

In the meantime, he was seeking section leaders to currently canvass the village seeking support for the petition.

He showed the group Ryley would be broken into 15 areas, and volunteers would seek to gather 15 signatures from each of the 15 areas.

“We want, in February and March, to canvas so we can be assured of at least 195 signatures. But

The Irma Aces travelled to Oyen, coming away with a big 9-6 against the first-place Eagles.

Jets handed them a 10-2 loss, effectively booting them out of the playoffs.

It further states additional information can be provided.

The leaflet further reads, “We, the people have the power to remove Nik Lee from office. Alberta’s new ‘Recall’ legislation allows, starting with a Notice of Recall on April 18, 2023, at least 40 per cent of Ryley’s population of 484 residents to sign a Recall Petition. We need 225 voters to sign the Recall Petition before it can be declared ‘sufficient.’ Please make your commitment to sign the Recall Petition when it

comes to your door in April so Ryley can remove and replace Nik Lee and begin to rebuild our community.”

The leaflet further states, “Councillor Nik Lee has broken the public’s trust. Over the course of just 15 months he has: and list several incidents the group insists can be proven.

“We believe it's important to make one on one contact with people so they know it’s their neighbours who are asking for this Recall Petition,” said Wilson.

He went on to say all information once the petition is ready to go will be destroyed.

“There will only be one copy delivered to the CAO,” explained Wilson.

“We as petition organizers will not have a copy.”

He added no one else in the Village office, except the CAO, will have any information on the petition.

Wilson said there had been a lot of changing sentiment in the Village since the last municipal election.

“In the recent by-election, Lyndie got 166 votes against four for Joshua.”

He said that represented a vote against Nik Lee, because Joshua Lee who ran against Lyndie Nickel, is the councillor’s son.

He said after the canvas of the village was done, information would be brought back to himself and the group could then figure out how much work they would have to do.

“A lot of people have lost trust in our council and our administration,” said Wilson. “People don’t know who even works at the office anymore.”

Wilson told the group no council is ever perfect but believes a lot of what’s gone wrong in the past 15 months has to do with Lee. Several members of the group immediately stepped up to act as canvassers in certain areas.

Nurses not working in rural communities due to potential loophole John Mather Staff Reporter

As Tofield council discussed how to accommodate contract or temporary nursing staff who were working in the community at their Feb. 11 council meeting, another issue came to light.

Chief Administrative Officer Cindy Neufeld said the head of the health unit had concerns with nurses moving after

the temporary closure of the emergency room.

Councillor Norm Martineau took up the story saying the health unit had hired four nurses to help out but only one had shown up for work before the closure was announced.

“Because they have been hired, they can now apply for internal openings through the Alberta Health Services, and because they are internal

candidates, all went to work at larger centres.”

“The head of the region was wondering how these nurses could be penalized to have this practice stopped because it hurt local staffing levels.

“I think they’ll have a hard time because of the shortages,” added Martineau.

Camrose Casino operator lobbying for rural support John Mather The operator of the Camrose Casino held a zoom meeting with more than 60 participants, mostly municipal elected officials and administrators Feb. 15, to further explain their concern about inequities in the way rural charities are funded through the casino’s operations against how urban casinos are funded.

The Camrose Casino had an application to move into Edmonton, where there is a larger market, denied partially because the urban charities were able to lobby Edmonton council to oppose its development.

The zoom meeting was hosted by the Rural Municipalities Association, which had also been lobbying for changes in the modelling of payouts between the rural and urban charitable groups by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis.

RMA is working with its rural municipalities to assist in addressing the issue.

Scott Mather, one of the owners of the Camrose Casino along with members of the Pechet family of Edmonton, further explained the issue. Mather pointed out the “Camrose Casino really appreciates the RMA’s support on this issue and in setting up this webinar.”

“This issue isn’t specific to Camrose only, but affects all rural charities throughout the province.

“We want to point out the inequity in the AGLC gaming model,” he said. “This is our chance to advocate for rural charities to get a fairer deal.”

He said the Camrose Casino had one chance to appeal the AGLC decision to relocate to Edmonton on Mar. 13, so it was imperative for the rural charities to throw their support behind the casino operator by expressing support for the move.

“The relocation of Camrose Casino to south Edmonton would allow rural charities to continue receiving gaming funds from it because it would continue operating as a rural casino.

He said the company operated a similar casino in Calgary using the same model and it was proving to be very successful for the rural char-

ities while not impacting the urban casino operators.

“The Camrose Casino not only supports rural charities in the Camrose region but rural charities out to St. Paul, Lloydminster, Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Beaumont and everywhere east of Edmonton.”

He said 650 rural charities would be affected if the Camrose Casino wasn’t allowed to relocate to Edmonton and it ceased operations.

A similar casino in St. Albert supports approximately 500 rural charities to the west of Edmonton. These are the only two casinos supporting rural charities in northern Alberta until you get into the Fort McMurray area. Red Deer Casino supports central Alberta.

Mather said the urban casinos produce higher revenues per event than the rural casinos and have shorter wait times for casinos to host an event.

He further explained that the relocation of the Edmonton Northlands Casino and Horse Racing Track from the Northlands grounds in Edmonton to near the Edmonton Airport had affected Camrose operations. Further approval for the Bear Hills Casino at the former Bear Hills truck stop along Highway 2 near Wetaskiwin would further impact Camrose operations to the point of making it unviable.

Mather explained that while Camrose provides a portion of its revenues to rural charities, in the case of the Bear Hills Casino 100 per cent of revenues would go to the Louis Bull Bands operating the casino, while the Century Casino near the airport provides its revenues to the Alberta Horse Racing Association.

He said the Bear Hills Casino, when it opens, will also be allowing smoking on the premises, the only facility in the province to do this. He added that St. Albert and Camrose were the only casinos that pooled their revenues to support the rural charities.

“So if we can move to south Edmonton it not only supports rural charities in the Camrose catchment area, but also in the St. Alberta catchment area.

He further stated, ideally, the gaming model should be changed so all revenues whether from rural or urban casinos would be split evenly to charities across the province. He said this model is used in both Ontario and BC and it works well.

“Our current government was elected to support rural communities and they haven’t put their money where their mouth is,” said Mather. “Our rural charities have to band together to lobby for this change.”

He added anyone could write a letter to AGLC in support of the proposal of change.

Mather provided some numbers showing additional inequities facing Camrose. When it opened in 2007 it was allowed 208 slot machines, while Century Casino which relocated about 10 years later, has more than 600 machines.

“That cut into our revenues,” stated Mather. He further added the Bear Hills operation would additionally pull support away from Camrose making it totally unviable.

“This will have an impact on the St. Albert operations because we pool our resources.”

In Tofield, which had discussed the impact of this at their last council meeting, administration and the mayor penned a letter to AGLC. “Rural charities,” the letter pointed out, “work tirelessly on behalf of the community to provide enhancements through projects that would not be possible without their hard work and dedication.”

It pointed out the key to their successes was funding.

The letter suggested lower funding for rural charities and the longer waits to host a casino was another “slight to rural Alberta, which as of recent seems to be continually accumulating and enhancing barriers to provide success for the communities each of us represent.”

“We believe their should be an allowance for relocation of the Camrose Casino. The relocation would allow for the betterment of our entire region, as well as Rural Alberta.”

Following the zoom meeting, Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely stated she had been a strong supporter of the Casino getting permission to move and fighting for a more equitable funding arrangement for rural casinos.

Mather said if the appeal to AGLC

failed, then the casino would probably be torn down and replaced with a different form of entertainment centre.

He said employees at the current casino would be able to relocate to the new casino if approved, or would be retained where possible at the replacement facility in Camrose.

“The AGLC Board needs to hear there is support for the rural charities,”

Mather concluded. “We need our leaders to contact AGLC and speak on our behalf. We need rural Alberta support.”

He said 250 urban charities had argued against the casino relocation before Edmonton council said no.

“We have to ensure rural Albertans get a fairer deal from the AGLC,” he said.

Six goals, three assists for Azelynn Newton over weekend lead though with six straight goals including five in just over three minutes of the second period. Trey Gulbraa had a six point game for Irma (4g 2a). Other scorers were; Knox Smith (2g 2a), Cates Mackay (2g 1a), Kholten Anquist (3a), Jeremiah Beer (2a), Jayden Meeuws (2a), and Levi Larson (1a). Irma U11 Female Aces (10-5-0) beat Hughenden Jets on the road on Saturday 5-3. With Irma up 2-0 heading into the third, Jets came back to tie but Aces rebounded with three more goals of their own for the win.

Two Hills however, scored with only 26 seconds remaining to secure the victory. Easton Morken scored twice for Viking.

Blood drive for canines Jana Semeniuk Staff Reporter

The Canadian Animal Blood Bank (CABB) held a blood donor drive Feb. 16 at West Wind Veterinary Hospital where people from the region brought in their dogs to make a donation. Regional Manager of CABB, Ashley Kaban, said the program has been collecting blood from dogs in Canada for more than 25 years.

“Although we are called the Animal Blood Bank, we only collect blood from dogs,” she said, adding that the organization will help in collecting blood from other animals when needed. She said animal blood is specific to the animal, and every sample is tested for 12 blood born diseases, including heartworm and lyme disease, at no cost to the owner. Although dogs have several types of blood, Kaban said the most important aspect is a showing of positive or negative while blood typing.

“When we're doing our blood typing, we just test for the DEA One Gene, whether it's positive or negative,” Kaban said.

“If you're a negative blood type, you're a universal donor, (but) you can only (receive) negative blood. But if you're the positive, you can (receive) negative and positive blood and 60 percent of dogs have the positive blood type.”

There are a number of prerequisites that must be met before a dog can be accepted as a donor. Kaban said the dog must be over 55 pounds, between the ages of one and eight, in addition to having a good level of maturity.

“Sometimes (with) one year old dogs, their maturity level isn't always there.

They're just too bouncy or wiggly and they just need time to mature,” she said, adding that donors are retired by age 10.

In terms of the process, Kaban said she uses lots of treats to make the experience positive for the dogs. She said prep work

takes about 10 minutes which includes a sample of blood drawn for testing while the owner waits. The dog is lifted onto a table outfitted with a pad to lay on and at least two to three people there to hold them.

“They have to sit really still because we go into the jugular vein in the neck with a large needle (and) we don't want to cause any damage,” said Kaban, adding the entire collection, which takes approximately 18 percent of the dogs blood volume, lasts five to ten minutes. She said the dog’s blood will replenish in about 30 days allowing them to donate more than once a year.

“We collect every three months and usually the (dog’s) whole blood amount is replenished within 30 days,” she said.

Despite the program being in Canada more than two decades, Kaban said CABB still regularly finds their supply short as the need outweighs the availability of blood.

“We collect, all over Canada, about 150 units a month, and a unit is a full-size unit like a full blood bag. And we're still anywhere between 40 to 60 units short a month,” she said. “We can't keep up with the supply and demand.”

Meanwhile Finn, a three-year-old mixed breed dog, came to the clinic with his owner to make his second donation.

Owner Sarah Cameron said she got the idea to sign up Finn for the blood donation program after her friend made the suggestion. Cameron added that another of her dogs was previously in need of several blood transfusions after a surgery.

“We have four dogs and Blue had some unfortunate issues and actually needed a couple of transfusions after a surgery,” she said. “I never really gave much thought to blood for dogs, but he needed it. And Finn is a big dog, and he’s young so (I thought) we’ll give it a try.”

Cameron said Finn did well for his first donation.

Viking Curling teams celebrate the Viking 65th Annual Farmers Speil

The Viking 65th Annual Farmer’s Spiel was held over the Jan. 6 and 7 weekend, with many teams involved in the big event.

President of the curling club, Doug Wilkinson, was on hand to congratulate the winners of the weekend.

Irma School celebrates third annual Literacy Day Natalie Heimdal Student Reporter

Irma School students recently enjoyed their third annual Literacy Day. This entire day was to recognize the power that reading and writing can have on a young mind. Even though it was an educational day, students were encouraged to dress up and have fun.

Following a delightful breakfast cereal bar, an assembly took place where principal Darren Grosky announced the first and second place winners in the elementary reading contest.

Second place was awarded to Miss Shaw’s grade two and threes. They won the chance of having Jagger Firkus, Moose Jaw Warrior forward and Seattle Kraken draft pick, read to them via Google Meet.

The first place class was Mrs Tomlinson’s fourth graders, subsequently winning a reading from Scott Ratzlaff, goalie for the Seattle Thunderbirds and recent winner of the CHL Top Prospects game, via Google Meet.

Mr. Grosky then gave a brief introduction of all of the 26 guest readers.

Members of the community including both the mayors of Irma and Hardisty, a RCMP constable, and representatives from Buffalo Trail School Division all brought wonderful and engaging stories to share with the students.

The readers went in groups to their classrooms and read books such as, The Kitten Tales, The Cremation of Sam Mcgee, and It’s a Book. The readers then toured two more classrooms for reading sessions.

One of the long term Irma School volunteers and former English teacher at the school, Gwyneth Gulbraa, came to read to students in grades seven, four, and kindergarten.

“I have always loved reading aloud to students. I do different voices for all the characters and find students very engaged and enjoyed when I read.

Reading is definitely the most important school skill. Read and succeed.

me today and planning this terrific Literacy Day,”said Gulbraa.

Irma’s former Librarian, Leah Larson, who is now the manager at the Irma Co-op, came to read to students.

“I was completely delighted to be back and reading to everyone. There were so many books, I could have kept going,” she told the people at her table.

The Irma School Home Ec. students had prepared a delicious lunch and treats for their guest readers in a gesture of appreciation for their time.

When the luncheon was finished the guest readers left and the student activities started.

The elementary grades partnered with the high school or junior high grades. Each group enjoyed having fun colouring pictures, making a fun bingo sheet with literary words, and going to the book swap.

Students and staff brought their used books to give to others, in turn, they got to take new books.

The grade sevens made a tablecloth tent in their classroom where they enjoyed making monster creations and writing stories with their grade two partners.

The grades seven and eight students, along with the elementary classes, decorated doors as a part of their Literacy Day preparations, with themes involving their favourite books or characters.

A scavenger hunt was then held with students finding hidden objects in these literary creations.

The day ended off with all of the students coming to the gym and playing bingo with their literary bingo sheets.

The students had fun through-out the day dressing up as characters, listening to wonderful stories, creating monsters, exchanging books and much more. When asking students what they thought on the day one student responded as, “We were very fortunate to have this opportunity today. I very much enjoyed it.”

The point of the Literacy Day was to show and encourage the students that reading and writing is an essential life skill and that it can be fun and this day in Irma School certainly accomplished that.
