RCMP Report: three Daysland vehicles targeted in theft of catalytic converters Leslie Cholowsky Editor, with files from Cst. Nicholas Daigle Killam RCMP
Thieves targeted three U-Haul trucks in Daysland and removed and stole the catalytic converters on Feb. 8. Killam RCMP members had a busy month, with 129 files from Feb. 1 to 18, compared to 82 in the same period last year, and 121 total for the month of February 2021. Suspicious vehicle and persons reports are up, with 15 reports made to RCMP so far this month. Two communities in particular, Amisk and Galahad, are experiencing higher calls of this nature. RCMP had 17 vehicle collisions reported during the first 18 days of Feb-
ruary, primarily due to road conditions, or wildlife. Police had 10 false alarms, with eight of the 10 coming from a local bank whose internal alarm system was having some work done. With high fuel prices, RCMP are dealing with reports of gas siphoning from Strome, Daysland, Amisk, and Galahad. There were six break and enters reported to RCMP, including the Hardisty Bottle Depot, where thieves entered the building but nothing appeared to be stolen. The Galahad Health Centre had a garage door kicked in, but nothing appeared to be missing at first glance. In other instances, a rural garage was broken into, and a trail cam was stolen from an acreage. RCMP laid one Assault with
weapon charge. Police have had reports of seven abandoned vehicles, however all were determined to be non-criminal in nature. So far in February, eight complaints or incidents have been cleared by charges. These include three people charged with failing to attend court; one traffic charge, failure to yield, one assault charge, one stunting charge, one impaired driving charge, and one person charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling. RCMP had a report of graffiti done to a building in Amisk with blue spray paint, and were notified of an attempt to siphon fuel from a vehicle. RCMP had a number of requests for assistance from the public, most were non-criminal in nature, asking for ad-
vice or assistance. Police were asked to perform five well-being checks, all individuals were located and healthy. One sudden death was reported to RCMP. Police investigated complaints of uttering threats, finding them unfounded. Two vehicle thefts were reported. A car was reported stolen from Killam, and later recovered in Coronation, and a 1998 Dodge Ram truck, also stolen from Killam, was still missing at press time. Despite increased service call numbers, RCMP are not seeing an increase in property or person crime year over year. RCMP urge residents to report all crime to police, not just on social media.
