Cold weather doesn’t deter Family Day fun Patricia Harcourt Editor
Brave souls came out to enjoy Family Day activities at the Viking Carena Complex Monday, February 21, despite the return of cold temperatures. They came to reconnect in a social setting as a family, and for their children to participate in games and other fun, while the adults had coffee sessions and discussed the latest personal and community events. Both lobby and rink side buzzed with activity as children played and enjoyed the fun offered to them from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Viking/Beaver Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) had a table at the event and coordinated a mini-Olympics indoor competition for the 52 children present. “We co-host Family Day every year with our fantastic partners as part of our mandate to build friendly, welcoming communities,” said FCSS Director Dawn Chrystian.
“The last time we hosted Family Day was in 2020, right before the start of the pandemic.” And the Viking Lions, another partner in the event, offered free hot dogs and hot chocolate which always brings people out to enjoy these delicious snacks. Then there were other activities such as careening around the ice on skates and many children enjoyed the play centre located in the upper part of the rink. Hay rides outside were toasty warm for the participants as drivers Christine Zarski and Sheldon Stayura took their team of horses around town pulling a heated covered wagon. Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely was also on hand to meet and greet with resident Clint Nearing. The children finished off their fun day with a “goodie bag” courtesy of FCSS and the Camrose Family Resource Centre. “We were really excited to come back together as a community this year, and look forward to more community events throughout the year,” said Chrystian.
