RCMP asking for help identifying suspect of armed robbery Patricia Harcourt Editor

RCMP are seeking the public’s help in locating a suspect wanted in an armed robbery at Viking Subway. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, when Viking RCMP responded to a call that a robbery was taking place at the restaurant located on Highway 14 just east of the junction with Highway 36. “An unknown male suspect entered the Subway, displayed a firearm, and demanded cash from the Subway employee,” stated Media Relations Officer Cpl. Gina Slaney. “The suspect then fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a white minivan,” she stated, adding that “no license plate was obtained from the minivan.” The suspect is described as about 6 ft. tall with a light complexion and brown eyes. He was wearing a green toque, black mask, black coat with reflective striping, grey pants and black running shoes. Police are asking anyone with knowledge of this crime to contact the Viking RCMP, or other local police. To remain anonymous, a person can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPPS).

Viking RCMP urging public to be more vigilant after rise in thefts Patricia Harcourt Editor

Viking RCMP is warning the public of an increase in stolen vehicle and vehicle break-ins in the area, and is offering storage tips for this and other items as a prevention tool. Invest in an aftermarket global positioning system (GPS) tracker as it can assist in the recovery of a stolen vehicle. Consider installing steering wheel, gearshift and hood locks. Install gas cap locks or anti-siphon devices so that fuel cannot be removed from your stored vehicle. Record the year, make, model VIN license plate, and colour of your vehicle for identification purpos-

es. And finally, take photos of any equipment serial numbers or any unique marks on your vehicle for identifying purposes, such as scratches, stickers, or customized features. As for safety tips on storage units, some include using a disk or cylinder lock as they are hard to pick and cut (if allowed by the storage facility). Lean towards an indoor storage unit if possible as a safer option. Don’t give out codes or keys to anyone other than trusted individuals and don’t tell people what you have in storage. Use locks with a small space between the bolt mechanism and the lock itself to reduce use of wire or bolt cutters. Check the unit at least once a month so it will still Continued on Page 7
