The Flagstaff Scottish Club celebrated the 15th annual Robbie Burns Dinner and Dance on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Killam Community Hall. It was the first post-pandemic live event for the Club, “After a wee break, to shake off COVID, we are excited to be back with you to share this evening of delicious food, entertaining music, and great friendship,” said new Clan Chieftain David Samm. The evening also includes a silent auction, with unique Scottish-themed articles that are always hard fought for by bidders. One of the night’s highlights is always the piping in of the Haggis, with much pomp and ceremony, culminating with the address to the culinary delight, this year given by Shaun Donald.

Even the menu has a Gaelic tilt, with Cock-a-leekie soup starer, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The official Robbie Burns Day, celebrating Scotlands most-famous poet, was actually Jan. 25, and the event is typically held as close as possible to the day. After dinner the program included the official induction of Samm as the Flagstaff Scottish Club’s new Chieftain by event co-founder Ian Malcolm. Malcolm presented Samm with a special cup, containing a wee dram of Scotch whiskey, that the two shared to seal the deal. After the presentation, Samm took the podium and recounted the story about how he came to be part of the Flagstaff Scottish Club, despite living in Camrose. “It was through meeting Don McLeod in Camrose, and he said once, Continued on Page 12
