U9 Gas Kings host successful tournament Patricia Harcourt Editor

The Viking Carena Complex rang out with the clang of hockey sticks connecting with pucks, skates gliding over the ice, and spectators shouting and clapping for their favourite team.

Skully’s Oilfield Maintenance Ltd. Viking Gas Kings held a highly successful U9 tournament last Saturday, with family and friends attending to watch 10 teams participate in the fun event.

The 10 teams included Viking Gas Kings, Daysland Thunderstars, Camrose Vikings Black, Camrose Vikings White, Wainwright #2 Wainwright #4, Millwoods Bruins, Sherwood Park Ice Ninjas Team 1, Sherwood Park Ice Ninjas Team B, and Camrose Hurricanes.

Gas Kings Team Manager Kelsey Place was pleased with how the day progressed. “We had a very good turnout, we thought, considering we haven’t been able to host anything for the last two years due to Covid,” he said. “We were lucky we were able to get 10 teams to come and participate.”

Two games were held simultaneously throughout the day on the south and north ends of the rink. Each game was 48 minutes long consisting of two periods of 24 minutes played as straight time.

All the fun started at 9 a.m. and games ran through the day until 6 p.m. After each game a “Heart &

Hustle” and MVP award was given out in a end of game ceremony.

The Viking Gas Kings played Game 1 against the Daysland Thunderstars in the morning with Taylen Place earning MVP and Ian Hill the “Heart & Hustle” award. The team then squared off against the Camrose Vikings Black in Game 2. For that contest, MVP went to Conley Docksteader and the “Heat & Hustle” was awarded to Easton Morken.

The Gas Kings played Game 3 (final game) in the

afternoon against the Sherwood Park Ice Ninjas A. It was a fast paced one with plenty of action to round out the hockey day for the local team. Game 3 MVP went to Cooper Quattek and “Heart & Hustle” to Kolt Morken.

The day also included prizes and raffle tables, and a puck toss at centre ice which was won by Desiree Trautman. Everyone also enjoyed the full concession available in the lobby area all during the hockey action.

Missing walking stick in Viking Eric Anderson Publisher

Viking’s Grace Sutter has been losing a bit of sleep lately after her walking stick was taken three weeks ago from the New to You Shop, where she volunteers.

The stick was a gift from son Brent Sutter and his wife Connie, given around six years ago after she had an accident down the stairs while living on the family farm.

“It meant something to me, they had it made for me after I fell,” Grace says. “I used it a lot on the farm and now occasionally in town.”

The incident happened on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Because of the weather that day, Grace had decided to take the stick with her on her walk to New to You, which is very near where she lives.

“I took my walking stick downstairs and left it by the coat rack,”

Grace says. She went upstairs to tend to some new inventory, before returning to move it.

“It was very obvious standing there, I thought I had better go hide it.”

She says she took the stick to the back near the racks of jeans, but around the corner by plastic containers full of hangers. She felt no one should have any reason to look there as the hangers were for the staff and away from other items for sale.

When she was done that day, she says the stick had completely slipped her mind.

“I came back on the Thursday and went to go get it, but by then it was gone. I shouted out, ‘my stick is gone!’”

Staff rushed to help her and found one standing by the door (pictured), but unfortunately it was not hers.

The staff working that day insisted Grace take the one left behind for now so that she’d still

have something to walk with. “’Take this one home,’ they told me, but I felt guilty and couldn’t sleep all that night because I didn’t pay for the thing.”

She says her stick, which she unfortunately didn’t have a picture of, has darker varnish, is a little narrower and taller, and doesn’t have a wrist strap.

It does have a compass on the handle, similar to the one that was left behind.

Grace says it’s possible the person who left the other stick behind may have either accidentally,

or intentionally, taken hers while leaving theirs behind. But she can’t know for sure if they’re even related.

Either way, she just wants it returned, no questions asked.

“I don’t need to know what happened, just leave it at my door, or drop it off with the newspaper.”

MLA Lovely Column: Addressing Issues Jackie Lovely MLA, Camrose A reporter recently asked me about a letter sent to the premier and health minister by the Town of Tofield council raising concerns about the lack of vaccine doses available for children aged 5-11.

I contacted AHS and was told the next paediatric vaccine clinic will be on January 26. That clinic is fully booked. There will be another paediatric clinic on February 3; but as of January 17 there were only three bookings. There are also paediatric and adult appointments in Camrose (approximately 35 minutes away) available seven days a week, as well as access for those 12-and-older through pharmacies for those who chose to vaccinate.

The zone is following the provincial direction in terms of not offering COVID-19 vaccines in schools at this time, only routine childhood immunizations.

Another issue that was brought to my attention was the government’s goal of streamlining the ticket process when it comes to traffic infractions. For some background information, SafeRoads Alberta was implemented in December 2020 to

allow police forces to hand-out significant impaired driving penalties during traffic stops, getting impaired drivers off the streets immediately. First-time offenders can pay their penalties or request a review online through SafeRoads Alberta.

This new system has proven to be successful, by reducing 11 per cent of impaired driving cases in criminal court.

Now, the government is looking to roll out phase two, which deals with traffic offences. It is completely false to suggest people cannot challenge tickets! Tickets can still be disputed and a person may still choose to be represented by a lawyer or agent when they contact an adjudicator. Decisions of SafeRoads Alberta adjudicators are always subject to a review by the court.

The expanded system is expected to manage nearly two million traffic tickets a year. These changes will clear up nearly 1,700 days of court time and eliminate thousands of inperson appearances by Albertans, providing significant savings while freeing up resources to address more serious criminal cases.

The killer who has stayed undetected for so long knows they are coming after him.

Switching to energy, the International Energy Agency released an in-depth review of Canada’s energy policies. Among the major highlights of the report is the need for provinces and the federal government to work together. The report echoes the message our government has said since we were elected and that is Ottawa must consult the provinces on energy policy. Word on the Street: leaking fuel discovered from CN train engine Early on January 17, police received a report of fuel leaking from a CN engine and the train was blocking the tracks east of Viking. Police attended the scene along with the fire department. A mechanic attended a short time later and repaired the train without incident.

That afternoon, police received a complaint of theft of batteries from a lease site that had occurred overnight. Police have no suspects and there was no evidence left at the scene to further an investigation at this time.

Also that day, police received a complaint of an historical sexual assault on a child that had taken place in the Viking area. This matter is currently under investigation.

On January 18, police received a report of a male walking southbound on Highway 36. The caller was concerned due to the frigid weather conditions.

Police made a patrol, located, and identified the male. Checks on the police computer system showed the male had warrants for his arrest in Saskatchewan and he was also listed as a missing person.

Further checks showed the male was also a suspect in a theft that had occurred the day prior in Wetaskiwin. The male was arrested and taken to the Viking Detachment. Several items that had been reported stolen in Wetaskiwin were located on his person. A charge of Possession of Stolen

Property is pending.

On January 19, police were dispatched to a panic alarm at a local business. They attended the location and found all was well and determined it was a false alarm.

On January 20, police received a request for assistance regarding concern for the welfare of two children. The caller was looking after the kids and did not want to return them to the parent who has full custody, as she had concerns for their safety. Police advised the caller to contact Children’s Services with her concerns, as they are only able to enforce court orders in regards to custody disputes.

Also that day, police received an anonymous tip advising of a Viking resident who is in possession of a fake QR code card. Police are following up on this matter.

That evening, police observed a vehicle parked on the wrong side of the road with its hazard lights flashing. A check on the license plate showed it was not a match to the vehicle it was currently attached to. The driver was issued two violation tickets for Sec. 52(1)(a) TSAOperate a Motor Vehicle Without Subsisting Certificate of Registration and Sec. 53(1)(b) TSADisplay Unauthorized Licence Plate on a Motor Vehicle.

On January 21, police received a request to check on the wellbeing of an individual who resides in the Viking area. The

caller was concerned as she had not heard from the person for several weeks.

Police were aware of the individual in question and updated the caller that there were no concerns for her safety.

On January 22,

police were on patrol and initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on Highway 36. The driver was unable to provide valid insurance and registration for the vehicle and was issued violation tickets for two offences.

Having children raised to value the joy of reading and learning goes a long way towards ensuring they will grow up with creativity and imagination in their lives.

To that end, Family Literacy Day will be celebrated in the communities of Viking and Holden on January 27 under the partnership of several organizations.

There will be stories and activities at both Holden and Viking municipal libraries from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the 27th of January.

But perhaps the most fun will be the opportunity to participate in a “family story” event, which gives the young ones a chance to write out reasons why they think their family is great.

The children will get a choice between three different

“prompts,” or line openers from which they can write a story.

They include: “My favourite part of my family is...;” “My favourite memory of my family is…:” or, “I love my family because…”

There is a template provided with lined paper that is available to pick up at the Family Literacy Day celebrations. Also, they will be provided at the Viking/Beaver FCSS office.

Once the story has

been written, it can be returned to either the library or FCSS office

by February 15 in time to be published in The Weekly Review and to receive a special prize.

BRSD hopes teachers given input before new curriculum implemented Moush John Staff Reporter

As Alberta gears up for a new kindergarten to Grade 6 curriculum, the province is seeking advice from education system leaders, teachers, and curriculum experts who will help set the course for its implementation.

Battle River School Division (BRSD) Superintendent Rita Marler said, “We are hopeful that the revisions address the concerns expressed such as age appropriateness.

There is a steep learning curve for teachers prior to implementing a new curriculum, so we hope consideration will be given to the extra load teachers have already been carrying.”

Marler stated that students and teachers have had multiple challenges in the last couple of years during the pandemic, so consideration for that would be highly beneficial.

The province is establishing a Curriculum Implementation Advisory Group to pro-

vide advice and recommendations on the implementation strategy and timelines for the new kindergarten to Grade 6 (K-6) curriculum.

The group will help determine how new curriculums for English Language Arts and Literature, Mathematics, and Physical Education and Wellness will be successfully implemented in September 2022.

This includes identifying potential supports that may be needed and options for providing these supports to school authorities.

They will also provide advice and recommendations on the continuation of piloting the remaining K-6 subjects beginning in September 2022 and provide strategies for implementing these subjects beginning in September 2023.

Speaking to representation from the area, Marler said, “There are representatives from a wide range of educational organizations on the committee. We are hopeful that broad educational perspective will help

the committee find positive solutions for moving the curriculum forward.”

According to a statement released on Thursday, Jan. 20, the C u r r i c u l u m Implementation Advisory Group includes members from Alberta Education and education partners who are directly accountable for curriculum implementation.

These individuals all have extensive qualifications, expertise and experience working within the education system.

This balanced approach will help ensure the best interests of students, parents and teachers inform the group’s advice and recommendations.

Meetings will also take place with First Nation school authorities to obtain their advice on curriculum implementation.

“Alberta’s government has been listening to all input from Albertans about the draft K-6 curriculum review process,” said Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education.

“We are committed to taking a measured and thoughtful approach to ensure curriculum piloting and implementation timelines are manageable for teachers and students.

“With the expertise of the Curriculum Implementation Advisory Group, Alberta’s government will carefully consider how to address the implementation timelines and support the education system throughout the process.”

Marilyn Dennis, who is the president of the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) said that ASBA appreciates participating in this advisory group to provide feedback from member school boards as the voice of their diverse communities.

Alta- Vi Memorial Society report Submitted Alta-Vi Memorial Society is a charitable organization governed by volunteers from the community. Meetings are held three times a year usually at the Vialta Lodge. The society board consists of a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and up to eight directors. The society, through generous support from our community, provides funding towards social and recreational activities, equipment and furnishings for the enjoyment and enrichment of the lives of the residents of Vialta Lodge. Our sole source of funds is donations.

The most recent project completed in 2021, through a most generous bequest from Lois Child, was the addition of the sidewalk on the east side of the Vialta Lodge which joins the sidewalk to the north between Beaver Manor and Viking Health Centre parking lot.

Three concrete pads and two benches were also purchased. This project resulted in a walking path right around Vialta Lodge and Beaver Manor for the residents’ enjoyment.

In 2020 the gazebo roof project was completed through numerous generous donations. And in 2021, funded by the Lois Child bequest, new louvres were installed to shield the residents from winds on cool days and let air flow through the gazebo on hot days.

Other items purchased in the last few years for the comfort and enjoyment of residents include a Smart TV for the Atrium, freezer for the residents’ use, two shampoo chairs, TV for upstairs in the sitting room, directional signs and mirror, bulletin boards, white boards, as well as annual grants towards entertainment, handivan trips, and bedding plants.

Viking sends out survey Patricia Harcourt Editor If there is something you want to let Viking Council know about concerning the town or its operations, the chance to do that is here in the form of a survey.

The survey allows for respondents to speak their minds instead of just checking off a box. While this method may be harder to tabulate, it allows councillors to hear the voices of those who are trying to convey their feelings and ideas on certain issues that are. important to them.

“We’re looking for feedback and information on how the community feels about the town,” said Mayor Laura Yakiwchuk.

“Our initial intent was to have a community forum to start off the New Year, but now we can’t do that because of COVID-19.

“So we decided to pose these questions just to get

some initial feedback,” she explained.

“There are three questions that the council is interested in hearing input and ideas concerning the future of the town and its residents.”

The questions posed in the survey are: What program or service currently provided by the Town of Viking makes the biggest positive impact for you personally?; Please share three (3) things you feel the Town of Viking can do to improve your quality of life; and, What do you love most about the Town of Viking? Why do you choose to live here?

“We want input from people,” said the mayor.

“It was in my (election) platform to have a community forum but we have to wait for AHS to lift restrictions.”

In the meantime, input and ideas are needed to help envision a bright future for the town and its

residents.

The survey was sent out along with the town’s water bills, and now it is also available on the town’s website. People have until Feb. 11 to return the completed survey either by email at info@viking.ca or sending a paper format to Town of Viking, Box 369, Viking AB, T0B 4N0.

Once the surveys have been received, administration will compile the results, said Yakiwchuk, and make a presentation to council.

“And we will examine them,” she said. “Town Council is looking for people’s thoughts and ideas while hoping to address their responses to use in finding future possibilities for the town.

“We’ll use the responses to formulate ideas and projects that residents and the community indicate are what the town needs.”

BESC continuing to protect the public with departments throughout county Patricia Harcourt The Beaver Emergency Services Commission (BESC) was established as a regional partnership by order in council on April 29, 2010, making history by being the first regional services of its kind in the province.

From its inception, member municipalities have included Beaver County, Town of Viking, Town of Tofield, Village of Ryley, and Village of Holden. BESC was established for the administration and delivery of fire and emergency management services.

BESC consists of six fire stations that are managed by a district fire chief and many dedicated volunteer firefighters.

The regional commission’s fleet consists of eight pumpers, four tankers, seven brush trucks, two rescue units, three utility vehicles, and two quads.

The commission’s headquarters are located in Viking.

As a new councillor on Beaver County Council, Lionel Williams wants the public to know how impressed he is after also becoming a commission member on BESC and taking a mandatory course on what it does to protect the public.

BESC provides fire and disaster (emergency management) services to its municipal partners. This regional partnership was the first of its kind in Alberta. The six local fire departments have about 100 firefighters volunteering for the job.

BESC responds to structural, vehicle and wildland fires; vehicle, farm, and technical rescues; medical First Response calls; public assistance, including searches; and hazardous materials and dangerous goods incidents at an awareness level.

“Collectively, we respond to nearly 300 calls for assistance annually,” stated Allan Weiss, Regional Emergency Manager, BESC. “This is still a relatively new organization and they have had growing pains but I think we are working our way into being a top notch operation,” stated Williams. “And compared to

many other jurisdictions we are ahead of the curve.”

He got that message loud and clear listening to questions and feedback received from one of the presenters with the Alberta Emergency Services Agency, who spoke at the “Elected Officials Emergency Management Training” course Williams attended as a newly elected councillor.

“It was an eye opener for me, and it was specific to what BESC does and the legislative requirements involved,” he said. He found out that BESC is responsible for preparing emergency or disaster plans, declaring local States of Emergency, putting emergency plans into action, and leading the recovery phase of any disaster.

And BESC Chair Gene Hrabec knows all the work BESC does. The county’s deputy reeve is the organization’s staunch promoter but agrees there have been some “growing pains.”

“I don’t mind taking the heat,” he said. “But it sure matters to me that the volunteers are taking heat.”

Hrabec thinks the volunteer firefighters deserve nothing but praise for helping in the service of others.

“The volunteers are the first guys at a fire,” he said. “They provide backup for medical services, they are the first guys on the scene for a motor vehicle accident or a heart attack at home.

“They give up a tremendous amount of personal time away from their families 24/7,” he continued.

“They are well trained to provide many services to you whether it be fire calls, alarms, accidents, dangerous goods, to first responder medical calls.

They are there when you need them and the board is extremely proud of the overall service BESC provides our communities.

Hrabec has served on the BESC board since 2017, and this is his third term as chair: “My commitment to the BESC board is provide the best service to the community as well as to support our unbelievable volunteers,” he said.

“I volunteered as a fireman years ago

as well as has Councillor Pederson (Division 5) which gives us a better overall understanding of the needs.

“I think the public needs to know that our volunteers are committed to their fire services and come from a real diverse background. We have farmers, mechanics, managers, municipal employees, nurses, EMTs, gas fitters, and so on from all sectors in Beaver County, and even a doctor.”

Town of Tofield Mayor, and BESC Vice-Chair Deb Dueck, has been on the commission since its inception, so she knows her way around the system now in place.

“I believe in the system and I believe we can be efficient instead of everybody going out on their own,” she said, referring to the towns and villages not having to run their own fire departments.

“Fortunately, we all have volunteers and they are passionate about their services,” she said. Dueck said the funding received for firefighters’ practice and calls is funnelled back into their individual departments.

She acknowledged there have been concerns about the fee structure used to invoice calls to residents. “We have to look at this,” she said. “It’s being revisited at the operational level at the moment.”

Once that is done, management will bring the information back to the board for further consideration.

But efficiencies are also there as each fire department in the county can provide backup for those in other towns and villages, or in the rural areas of the county.

“I just think that we’re so fortunate that we have so may dedicated volunteers,” she said. “I think we’ve come a long way.” Dueck agrees the BESC board has had growing pains that included staffing problems over the years. But she said: “There’s a lot to developing a commission and making it a working machine.”

Considering this was the first such project to be put in place, that is not a bad legacy.

And over the years issues have arisen, such as the need to update the organization’s bylaws, a task now being addressed by the board.

“We’re just trying to update our stuff,” said Hrabec, noting that the current board members “are committed to sitting on committees to do that work.”

He added: “It is important for the board to work collaboratively together to provide a balanced good, modern service within the fiscal layout.

Having said that, it is an area we continue to work on trying to find the right balance. I believe that we need to find the positives out of situations and move forward. Education and communication are great tools to get the public involved in issues like insurance coverage, fire volunteer training, and having the proper heath and safety plan in place to ensure proper equipment and gear are provided.

Unfortunately this all comes at a cost and, when factoring in COVID-19, we are seeing costs skyrocketing.

“Our board is committed to addressing these issues with committees that were formed to work with administration to update and bring strong policies, governance, personnel, health and safety, training, and capital purchasing,” outlined Hrabec. “The board is in the process of undergoing an organizational review of BESC to provide us better understanding of its strengths and weaknesses.”

For his part, Williams is very impressed with the work and responsibilities BESC has carried over the past decade, work which has been used in recent times due to the pandemic, droughts, flooding, and other issues.

“Did you know that the province has only been in charge of two declared States of Emergency?” he said, naming the High River flood and the Fort McMurray fire as “…the only events the province led the charge on.

“Other than that, the local emergency services have managed every other situation.”

Return of CoW meetings considered Patricia Harcourt Beaver County is considering returning to Committee of the Whole meetings as a way of gathering information and holding discussions on important issues.

These are meetings that don’t have the need for action attached to them, as there is no voting that takes place.

Committee of the Whole (CoW) meetings were held once a month as a matter of course right up to the start of the previous council term (2017-2021) when they were cut out in favour of two regular council meetings each month.

As one of his key recommendations, Interim CAO Rick McDonald wants a return to CoW meetings stating they are more efficient for well informed decision making.

He told county council at the January 19 meeting that council should direct administration to prepare a Governance and Priorities Committee bylaw which would be brought to council’s next meeting for first reading.

“Administration is recommending that Beaver Council consider establishing a committee by bylaw that is named the ‘Governance and Priorities Committee’ which is a committee consisting of all councillors.”

These are often referred to in layman’s terms as committees of the whole.

This committee is not in the county’s procedural bylaw, but council can create a bylaw to establish such a committee, he said. A draft of a bylaw he has used in other municipalities was attached in the agenda package “for discussion purposes” Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) stated that the previous council to this one had committee of the whole meetings but “they went away from it.” Smook was reeve in the council term 2014-2017, and that term had a Committee of the Whole

meeting on the first Wednesday of every month in that three-year time period.

“Is this an additional meeting or will it replace one of the two regular meetings,” he asked McDonald.

McDonald replied it was “up to council if they think they need two (regular) meetings.” He said it “would depend on how much you get done in one.”

Committees of the whole have a value in their structure of being able to gather information by asking questions, and debate is not needed.

Instead, “it’s an opportunity for the public to approach council and just present information with no decision needed,” he said, with the result being a reduced length of the regular meeting because of it.

Committees also gives council “the opportunity to talk about policy and strategic direction,” he said, noting it’s in the public domain and “people can watch.”

“You are gathering information to help make better decisions.”

Deputy Reve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) had questions on whether council could also hold a regular meeting following the committee of the whole in order to deal with time sensitive items. He also had confidentiality and transparency concerns.

He asked if “we would be able to have a timed portion for a regular council if there is an item needing attention in the afternoon - for an afternoon of time - to deal with sensitive stuff.”

McDonald said “a number of items” could be brought forward to a council agenda, but he felt council would be “pushing it’ if this was done on the same day as a committee meeting.

A motion by Councillor Dale Pederson (Division5) for council to go by McDonald’s recommendation was passed.

Beaver County Council agrees to new Covenant document with Interim CAO Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council has accepted the draft Council-CAO Covenant and agreed to sign the Covenant document with the newly appointed Interim CAO Rick McDonald.

While conducting a municipal governance review for the county last summer, McDonald had recommended the covenant as “an opportunity to build relationship,” and bring clarity to each of their roles and responsibilities.

In his report, he said the Covenant “will align council and the CAO in agreed to protocols that will foster a positive working relationship.”

He added: “This will enhance the county ability to provide open, transparent value driven governance while directing the programs and services for residents and ratepayers.”

It was “something to refer back to if things do go off the rails,” he explained, at the January 19 council meeting.

“We can look back and see what we agreed to.”

In his report, McDonald said a “key issue” was to have an effectively operating municipality. For this to happen, “a solid working relationship between

the council and its CAO,” is necessary.

A Covenant helps this by committing “both parties to seeking clarity in the relationship and seriously undertaking to conduct their respective roles appropriately.”

Council must accept or endorse the Covenant ‘in principle’ and used as an appendix to a CAO bylaw and/or contract, he said.

“I think this is great,” responded Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3 councillor), calling this “one of the key points that came out of the review.”

The municipal governance review was one of the last initiatives by the previous council prior to the municipal election last fall.

McDonald was hired to conduct the review with a long list of recommendations. One of these was for the council and any new CAO (the previous council having fired their longstanding CAO) to sign a Covenant of understanding spelling out how the relationship should work and what the protocols would be in the case of a dispute or disagreement.

At the January 19 meeting, Hrabec asked what time frame

should be in place to institute the recommendations coming out of the review by McDonald.

McDonald said council should be working on a time frame, but that some recommendations are already underway.

He added that the hope was to put a process in place that will allow them to work together to resolve issues.

Councillors Dale Pederson (Division 5) and Lionel Williams (Division 2) asked what would be the process in dealing with someone who

broke the Covenant.

The answer from McDonald was he thought that would be something to bring up in closed session with council and the CAO. “We have to work together to resolve issues,” he said, such as legal and personnel. “In closed session you can be frank with one another. He told council that the result should be a return to trusting and “being collegial with each other again.”

Calling the Covenant more of a spiritual than a legal document, he said it will define

“how we work with each other, (and) deal with each other.”

McDonald said he has used a Covenant with almost every organization he has worked with. When Hrabec asked if this kind of Covenant can be put in place for senior levels of staff as well, McDonald replied: “The staff is watching this right now,” and said he will treat staff the same as he treats council.

Hrabec said he “hopes the general public sees this.” His motion to accept and sign the Covenant was passed unanimously.

If healthier food products are the wave of the future, then a brother/sister duo originally from Viking are right on the cusp of that wave.

In Sherwood Park, Wayne Selzler makes and markets seasonings that don’t contain additives, salt or sugar. In Kelowna, Myrna Selzler is making plant-based meats and bread products incorporating her brother’s seven spices.

“It’s been one of my passions,” said Wayne, who has a full-time job as a quality control manager while working on his spices part-time. His goal was to create healthier foods using spices to make them tastier instead of the unhealthy ingredients cited above.

“I’m not a vegetarian,” he said, and before his sister’s products were available, didn’t like the meat alternatives being offered to the public. But his sister’s food tastes different.

“I’ve eaten quite a few pounds of Myrna’s product.” From her production plant in Kelowna, “she does her own mixing,” he said, blending his seasonings in to provide that needed flavour and taste.

“You can make whatever you want. She has five plant based meat products with different flavours,” that can be turned into Italian meatballs, burger patties, breakfast sausage, or tacos.

They are made from a dry blend that is packed and can simply be stored

on the shelf “for weeks or months,” he said. The ingredients come to life by adding water and “you can form it into any shape you want,” said Wayne.

“She knows that people want a label you can read and ingredients you can trust, especially if you are interested in health issues.”

Their bond of producing and consuming healthier food is imbedded in an upbringing together but also because each has health issues.

Myrna donated a kidney to her brother seven years ago, about the time he invented his first seasoning, Smoky BBQ. He has always looked to invent his own recipes with the goal of making food tastier.

“I’ve always just cooked on a whim without much thought in trying to follow someone else’s methods,” he said, which started when he cooked for family and friends back in Viking.

“I seek out tips and tricks from time to time, but I make it my own.”

However, getting a new kidney upped the ante on the need for healthful as well as flavourful food.

“I wanted to cook with flavour and avoid the high salt content and sugary sauces, but there were few choices,” Wayne explained. So he created his own set of spices that people sensitive to food additives, especially, would find appealing.

“Great flavour without much salt or using a sauce is a different beast,” he said. “The first seasoning

took many tries,” and others followed.

“I’m not alone wanting to have fewer cheap and synthetic fillers in my food,” he said. “There are still plenty of toxins in other areas of my life. This is one I choose to minimize.”

With more people going for plant based foods, he notes that salads, soups, vegetables, and casseroles all could use some flavour.

While this was going on, Myrna was creating her recipes for plant based meats and breads resulting in the company name BABz. The products are described as dry mixes a person adds liquid to such as water, beer, or wine. It can be baked, fried, or barbequed. They are free of gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, are vegan and high in protein and fibre.

Her journey began several years after donating her kidney to her brother when she had to have a double mastectomy.

“I thought I could take better care of my health by transitioning to a plant based diet,” she said. “I hated the way the plant based meat products looked (like badly fried brains), and tasted (like a carrot or bean), and they always fell apart. And there are all kinds of additives in other products.”

She added: “Our products, including Wayne’s seasonings, are designed to address all those issues.”

Wayne’s spices are mainly based in Alberta.

“Im in nine stores, includ-

ing one in Tofield, with one in BC.” However, his sister is working on setting up distribution points all over the country.

“She has a different plan than I do,” said Wayne. “She sold her real estate business and is doing this full-time.”

Activist deeply disappointed by Naslund re-sentencing “Helen should not spend another day behind bars . . . the decision did not explain why they felt nine years was appropriate” Moush John Staff Reporter

For longtime activist Matthew Behrens, who coordinates ‘Women Who Choose to Live’ network, Holden resident Helen Naslund’s re-sentencing has been deeply disappointing.

“As someone who has worked a good deal with prisoners and detainees – especially in the refugee/immigration and extradition contexts – I began seeing more and more cases of women criminalized and jailed for defending their right to live when there were so few resources available to help them escape the terror of their abusive relationships,” he said from his Ottawa residence. “The writings of women like Ann Jones, Lee Lakeman, Angela Davis, Bell Hooks, Elizabeth Sheehy, and Susan Faludi were hugely influential in my own learning journey.”

It was this experience, along with his journalistic background, which resulted in him covering issues related to male violence/femicide extensively; working with and supporting plaintiffs in class action sexual assault/harassment lawsuits against the RCMP and Canadian Forces; and organizing court and financial support for women who have been criminalized for surviving/defending themselves, that led him to reach out to Naslund in 2017.

“I reached out to Helen Naslund in 2017 when I first read the details of her case, and wrote care of her lawyer at the time but Helen tells me she never received my letter offering support,” Behrens said. “As a part of ‘Women Who Choose to Live’ – a decade-old loose-knit network which advocates with and supports women who have escaped abuse and been punished as a result – I monitor news coverage of issues related to femicide and women fleeing male violence, and reach out to and correspond with women who have been criminalized for surviving.

“It is in that context that I reached out to her first, and again in 2020 upon learning about the draconian sentence.

I’ve had a number of lengthy conversations with women in the networks to end violence against women and shared my concerns, and benefited from lengthy discussions about her case with the executive director of the London Abused Women Centre, who had dealt with numerous similar cases during her years there, and was similarly

outraged at the sentence.”

This made Behrens express his views in a column, which garnered a lot of feedback and support.

“I received a lot of feedback on the piece – a combination of outrage and declarations that such a sentence could not stand and questions about why Battered Women’s Syndrome was not introduced in what seemed to so many a case of self-defence along the lines of many cases Elizabeth Sheehy had written about so extensively, especially in her book Battered Women on Trial: Lessons from the Transcripts,” he noted. “Shortly after I launched the petition, and I also wrote to Helen and to Neil, her son – who was also sentenced to three years – offering support.”

Behrens said that from comments on the petition to emailed comments and phone conversations that he has had with people across the country, there’s an almost universal condemnation of the sentencing.

“So many said things along the lines of ‘I have been there too, and but for the grace of God or the resources I had to escape I could be in Helen’s shoes right now…’ I was at first surprised, as I thought it would be difficult for some people to accept the details laid out in the agreed upon statement of facts and still call for a lighter sentence or, even more, throwing out the case altogether,” Behrens added. “But I think this speaks to the epidemic of male violence against women, and that cases like Helen’s are all too common. Needless to say, the agreed upon statement of facts did not begin to scratch the surface of the horrors she endured!”

His involvement grew deeper when Naslund responded to his letter and they began calling almost every week.

“As difficult as it can be through prison walls and across phone lines, I got to know Helen really well through her amazing letters and our weekly chats; she struck me as an incredibly kind, caring, and compassionate woman who only wants to do a good day's work and get back out on the land. She lived through 27 years of torture the likes of which you normally read about in Amnesty International reports.”

Behrens said that they share a love of country music and how Naslund has taught him a lot about rural Alberta life.

“I also have a strong sense of who Helen is from the love that everyone I have met in her fam-

ily and network of friends holds for her. I have worked on a lot of cases, but I have never, ever seen someone so universally liked and loved as much as Helen, from her eight grandchildren to her many nieces and nephews to her co-workers.”

According to Behrens, Naslund also maintains an extensive correspondence with scores of people across the country.

“And when I say correspondence, I don’t mean a few polite words here and there,” he said.

“One woman who was recently widowed told me how Helen had helped her through a very difficult period; another has offered Helen a place to stay when she gets out. That speaks so much to who Helen is, despite having been through such hell for the majority of her adult life!”

Behrens said that he believed that Helen should not spend another day behind bars.

“There are so many precedents where women in similar circumstances received probation or suspended sentences,” he noted. “Unfortunately, the decision did not explain why they felt nine years was appropriate when it was the highest end of the sentencing range. Having said that, the appeal decision is very important because it reminds the courts of the absolute necessity to be alive to, and recognize signs of, battered woman syndrome in such situations.

“Critically, it was also the first time since she was subjected to the brutality of her abusive husband at the age of 19, that the judicial system finally acknowledged, in its own particular way, something Helen had never heard from the cops or the

courts or the lawyers: We believe you. We see you. We recognize the “egregious” harm that was done to you over 27 years of enduring a domestic war zone. . . . this needs to be talked about, taken into consideration. Words matter. They really, truly do.”
