BY HAZEL ANAKA It’s no secret that I love books and reading. I can’t imagine a home without books. I remember personal development guru, Jim Rohn saying in a seminar I attended that it’s no accident that the biggest homes in the world have libraries. Volumes of his own leather-bound journals of ideas, plans, goals, words of wisdom made up a significant part of his library. Of course, he filled the rest with offerings from some of the greatest minds in the world. Tongue-incheek, he said he felt smarter just seeing those books. I agree. I may never get to read every book I own but I’m not parting with them anytime soon. FYI: I still prefer a paper book over an

e-book any day of the week.

However, as I packed up much of the house in anticipation of our addition, I realized I don’t need to own every book in the world to benefit from their existence. As a property owner in Strathcona County I was thrilled I could become a member of the libraries in Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan.

When I borrow a pile of home decorating books I can barely carry the load but I revel in how much money I’ve saved.

Another source of joy is the huge selection of audio books.

When I’ve visited these locations during the day I’ve noticed a loud group of old guys who regularly congregate and swap what I imagine to be tall tales. I’ve overheard literacy and tutoring sessions. I’ve seen people on their own laptops or signed in to the available monitors. I see moms and tots loaded down with books. Depending on the time of day, I’ve seen young people gath-

ered in couples or groups. Sometimes I see studious souls hunkered down doing homework and only occasionally checking their phones.

One day I questioned library staff about the noise level and the permission to eat and drink within the space. What happened to the old days of shushing and protecting the collection from, well, users of the collection?

Oh, haven’t you heard,

libraries are now considered the living room of the community.

I guess I missed that memo. This change in focus is probably an attempt to keep libraries relevant, to increase usage, and to meet the needs of today’s people.

Welcome them or lose them.

One evening I met at the Andrew Library with a couple I was going to be marrying.

Congregation of Lamont United Church celebrates 125 years MAUREEN SULLIVAN The congregation of the Lamont United Church will celebrate its 125th anniversary on July 9, 2018.

It began in 1893 in the homes of the settlers of the area. The first settlers came to this area in April 1892 from the Sunridge district of Parry Sound County in Ontario. They were soon joined by others from Eastern Canada, Great Britain and the U.S. At the end of the 19th Century a Ukrainian settlement was formed to the north and east.

The congregants met in small gatherings in each other’s homes and gave Bible readings. The first service with a minister was July 9, 1893 at Walter Hackett's Farm.

The farm one mile north and half a mile east of Lamont, still remains in the Hackett family. At that service the first children of the settlement were christened, The original church site was at the south end of the Hackett farm. A fine set of pine logs were hauled, peeled, hewed and then left to season.

Unfortunately, that fall a fire swept through the district and burned the logs. The settlers then decided on a site in Star, but decided to wait and see where the railway would be built.

The church services, led by leaders of the area and visiting ministers from Edmonton, took

place in the local schools.

All social functions were sponsored by either the church or school.

In 1903, Dr A. E. Archer commenced his practice at Star. He became a leader in the church and under his leadership the Presbyterians and Methodists decided to unite in a building effort.

a choir loft and pulpit was built at the corner of 51 Ave and 52 Street. The building was completed for the most part by volunteer labour.

The church was built by money donated and raised by the congregation. It opened on November 18, 1906. The two congregations worshipped on alternate Sundays .

In 1907 a manse for the Presbyterians and on the next lot a parsonage for the Methodists were built on the corner of 52 Ave and 54 Street.

Chipman built a church and parsonage in 1910, but returned to the Lamont congregation in the depression.

On June 10, 1925, the

united congregation became a part of the United Church of Canada.

In January of 1936 the church and all its contents were destroyed by fire and the church was moved to its current site on the corner of 51 Ave and 53 Street. Despite the lack of prosperity, it was decided that it was imperative to erect a church building. The decision was to build it of stone.

The whole community of all faiths and nationalities came together, bringing stones from their fields, donating labour, tools and materials. The church was dedicated in the fall of 1936, free of debt.

In June 1954, a new stained glass window depicting "Christ among the Doctors" was erected in the south end of the church as a memorial.

Written in a church history pamphlet of 1944, "The founding of the church in the district would not be complete if there was omitted the part played by the Lamont United Church Public Hospital (Archer Memorial). With Dr. Archer as chairman, in cooperation with the Home Mission Board of the Methodist Church, the first church hospital was built in 1912. Since that time, this institution has continued to grow in strature, in its service and influence until it has become more that a med-

ical institution. …. There has been infused into the very life of the hospital a spirit of Christian service It is this spirit which has maintained our church in Lamont and district at such a high level."

Today the congregants of the United Church still welcome all faith and nationalities to the building, hosting a community dinner once a month.

They continue to work closely with the hospital, and look forward to their next 125 years.

A celebration will be held on July 15, at Sunday service, followed by a potluck dinner. All are invited to attend, but especially former members of the congregation.

Opinion Chain newspapers making old time publishers spin in their graves Newspaper ownership by giant corporations with their management methods is making the whole industry look like it is circling the drain. They might be, but independents are not so don’t give up on us.

After closing 21 papers last fall, this past week newspaper giant Post Media announced that it was closing yet another 10 newspapers across Canada including the Camrose Canadian.

For me it was shock and awe.

During my first week as a reporter for the Sedgewick Community Press in 1980, then owner Monte Keith took me on a trip to Camrose to meet Canadian owner, the late Chuck McLean. The one thing that immediately got my attention entering the Canadian was that familiar smell of ink. Every newspaper smelled the same and I loved it.

It smelled like hard work... honour... integrity.

Back in those days, newspapers were mostly owned by people like Chuck and Monte. They were independent, stubborn, community-minded people with a touch of entrepreneurship. The province and country were full of these newspaper owners, all very much the same. Some owned one newspaper, some branched out and had a handfull. But they brought their inflexible principles with them to each and every newsroom.

On a larger scale at the time, Thompson Newspapers, Conrad Black's Hollinger International, and Southam, owned most of Canada's daily newspapers. Each company was bringing in millions of dollars in revenue daily.

Thompson Newspapers alone was one of Canada's top five largest companies, and these business tycoons literally found a way to print money.

But then in the mid-1980s something began to happen to Canada's weekly newspapers. Large corporations began buying these independent publishers out for more than they ever thought their businesses were worth, and one of them was the Camrose Canadian.

Independents scratched their

heads, as the game began to change.

Should we sell? What about independent thought? Would chains maintain the quality? Would selling hurt the communities these independents knew and loved?

Well, it turned out that these chains were quite able to run good newspapers but you could also see they lacked a sense of “community.”

With the onset of the internet, newspapers had more competition and revenues dropped. With that, the single greatest difference between chain ownership and independent newspaper ownership became very apparent - resourcefulness and knowledge of the business.

While the independents were able to adapt to the new world, the corporate bean-counters began slicing and dicing. The first place they looked was journalism. Writers cost money, sales people made money. It was as simple as that to a corporate bean-counter.

Writers had to go. Newsrooms shrank, generic news became shared between all corporate newspapers and customers noticed.

Meanwhile independent publishers continued to toil away. To them this industry was less about money and more about community. To chains it is indeed the other way around.

There are still 30-40 independent publishers left in Alberta. Ironically, they are mostly the same smaller papers the chains didn’t want.

We still meet independently and share our ideas, troubles and successes. We are still doing our jobs.

We are still covering community events. We are still a large part of our communities and we feel our communities are better with us.

One independent publisher said it well: “Purchasing advertising from a newspaper is an investment in your community and it pays for coverage of local events.”

Another independent shook his head at the state of these chains’ closures: “There are old time publishers presently spinning in their graves.”

I think Chuck McLean may be one of them.

A Stronger, Safer Tomorrow highlights 39 actions – including 16 immediate steps before April 2019 – the Alberta government is taking to improve services, address funding on reserves and increase supports for children, youth and families.

The plan addresses all 26 final recommendations released in March by the Ministerial Panel on Child Intervention.

Developed with Indigenous leaders, communities and frontline partners who work directly with vulnerable or at-risk children and youth, it includes short-

and long-term actions for completion by 2020 and 2022.

The province is immediately committing $4.3 million to implement actions this fiscal year, including the creation of a new Indigenous advisory body to guide implementation in local communities.

Early intervention and prevention services will be prioritized, and Alberta will fully implement Jordan’s Principle, the legal rule that ensures all children receive necessary services and supports, regardless of jurisdiction.

Lamont Agricultural Society celebrating 100th anniversary MAUREEN SULLIVAN The Lamont Agricultural Society is celebrating its 100 years in the community at the Summer Sizzler Rodeo taking place July 13, 14, & 15 at the Conrad Schinkinger Memorial Grounds.

The Ag Society as it is fondly called, received its charter in 1918. It was started by like-minded farmers to support each other and the town. Its stated mandate, "to strengthen the ag community through education and entertainment."

The society built the recreation centre in town in 1971, and it was later sold to the Town of Lamont. It used some of it's fundraising to support many community organizations and groups over the years. It partnered with the Lions, Lamont Fish and Game, and 4-H to work toward community goals which included supporting the recreation centre and the hospital projects over the years.

The first rodeo put on by the Ag Society was in 1987 called the Spring Bustout. It was held indoors at the rec centre.

In 1992 the outdoor grounds were built and the rodeo was renamed

the Summer Sizzler. In 1994 the first Bullarama was held.

The rodeo grounds were called the Conrad Schinkinger Memorial Gardens in 2009. Named after one of its long-time members who was even working for the Ag Society moving mutton when he died of a heart attack.

In 2015 the Ag Society bought land on the corner of Highway 831 & Township Rd 532 and moved its facilities out there.

This is the fourth Summer Sizzler out at the new grounds taking place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 13-15.

There will be free camping all weekend. The rodeo starts at 6:30 followed by a free movie, Monsters Inc on Friday at 9:00 pm - bring lawn chairs to sit on.

Saturday starts at 8:00

am with a pancake breakfast and the kids rodeo at 9:00 am. The centennial celebration of the Ag Society starts at 12:30 with a presentation of a plaque, speeches and cake. Rodeo follows and a combine crunch at 4:00 pm followed by a steak dinner and a dance. The rodeo concludes on Sunday.

Current members of the Lamont Agricultural Society are grateful for all the work put in by all members past and present. This is a volunteer driven organization and nothing could be accomplished without the countless hours of the volunteers.

If anyone has memorabilia of the Lamont Ag Society over the years, please bring it to the attention of the society so that they can keep it for prosperity.

“Owl in the City”: MAUREEN SULLIVAN Author and photographer Tony Veltri was at Bruderheim Elementary School on June 26, to talk to grades four and six about his upcoming photography book, Owls in the City. He also filmed a quick promo for his book with two of the three students whose submission on how to protect the environment will be in the book.

Veltri, the author/publisher of the book asked students across Alberta to write a short paragraph about their experiences seeing or hearing a great horned owl shareing why they believe the great horned owl was chosen as Alberta's provincial bird and participate in the owlet

naming contest.

James Short, Grace Gushue, and Jordan Seward’s essays on protecting the environment were accepted by Veltri as part of the book. All three students are in grade six.

James and Grace were very excited to be part of the book and to be taped for the promo Veltri is making for his book, which will be released in the fall. Unfortunately, Jordan was absent from school that day.

"How can we live in harmony with nature.

The most important thing is to stop destroying their habitants. If everybody helped and did their part we could be in harmony with nature," says James in his

submission for the book.

"How can we help nature? We can help by trying to stop pollution.

We need fresh air, they need fresh air. We're kind of the same," said Grace.

Owls in the City follows the journey of two great horned owls raising three owlets in a downtown urban park.

The book includes photos captured during Canada's 150 birthday and Alberta's 40 anniversary of school children choosing the great horned owl as their provincial bird.

While at the school, Veltri set up his camera in such a way that students looking through it could see the difference between how they see and how an owl sees.

Three Bruderheim students featured in upcoming book

Owls have telescopic eyes with 10x better binocular vision, and can see in the dark. "They see in the darkness what we

would see in daylight," he told the students.

When Owls in the City is released this fall, the Bruderheim School

library will receive a free copy and the three students will also receive a signed copy of the book.

Town of Lamont passes 2nd reading of cannabis bylaw MAUREEN SULLIVAN The town of Lamont held a public hearing on June 26 to discuss the changes to the Land Use Bylaw as it relates to Cannabis retail sales.

A presentation was provided by Laraine Stuart, Economic Development Officer for the Town of Lamont. The definition for the land use bylaw includes cannabis products, retail, production and cafes.

Any business dealing with Cannabis in the town of Lamont must be at least 100 metres away from schools, daycares, health facilities and religious institutions. It must be at least 50 metres away from existing pharmacies and liquor stores, and any sites adjacent to recreation, indoors or out must have fencing around it.

There can be no signage on the highway as per provincial guidelines and store frontage signs must follow current

spayed and neutered dogs is $15 and unaltered is $25 for pet bylaw.

Four firms submitted proposals for the CAO recruitment, and has been short listed to two.

The Corporate Services Committee will review and discuss CAO salary range and reference relevant area salaries.

Animal Control The Protection of Persons and Property Committee discussed animal control options.

As there is no funding for an officer, they will consider partnerships with other communities.

As Lamont County is also working on this, a letter of interest in partnership was sent.

Letters of Concern A letter of concern was sent by a resident of Greenfield Echoes in regard to the property on the west side of 54 St to the water reservoir. This property has been a dumping ground of excess building materials such as concrete from the

guidelines.

No other presentations were made.

At the conclusion of the public hearing Council passed second reading of the amended bylaw.

The bill was then discussed by council. Of concern was whether these proposed set backs would prohibit the ability of a retail business to set up on 50 Ave. Leaving the only places available in C2 or C3 which consists of the area beside the railway tracks and or up past the recreation centre.

It was agreed to have administration provide a map with the allotted set backs drawn in so that it could be further discussed at the next meeting, prior to third and final reading.

Changes to fees and charges There were two minor changes to fees and charges; the NSF fee increased from $25 to $35 and description for

hospital, the county building and town in previous years. The resident cites concerns about the long grass and weeds, danger of fire and the problems with water runoff as this property has a higher elevation.

Council will have administration look into borrowing equipment from the County to remove debris.

A further letter about the use of truck engine retarder brakes in the area being very loud was received. The areas of

concern, the grain elevator entrance & Hwy 15 and Hwy 15 & 831 are not in the town’s boundaries, so the letter will be forwarded to the County.

Demolition of condemned building The MGA has approved demolition of a building on 48 Ave which has been condemned and then empty for at least 35 years. The owner has until July 31 to remove the building himself or then the town will do it.

Storage The water commission has decided to build a storage shed in Chipman to keep all the extra piping and conduit.

Mayor receiving award The AUMA will be honouring Mayor Bill Skinner with a Distinguished Services Award for more than 20 years of service on the council and as Mayor. He has been serving on Council since 1988. The AUMA convention will take place in late September in Red Deer.

The county, also celebrating its 50 year anniversary, gave a gift to the first 50 guests through the door. The children were entertained with a balloon artist, hula hooper, and sleight of hand performer.

Overuns and delays cause concern at reservoir Problems with original engineering drawings slows useage

JOHN MATHER There are concerns with the way the Heartland Reservoir is being brought online by the County.

At the June County Council meeting, Division 5 councillor Neil Woitas brought up concerns about the county losing out on revenue because the water truck fill arms still haven’t been installed in the facility.

“We’re missing the boat on spraying season,” said Woitas. “This should be the busiest season for that facility and it’s doing nothing.”

Director of Planning & Community Services, Stephen Hill said there were buried utilities in the area where the truck fill arms were to be located. This has resulted in the consultant working on the project having to complete a redesign.

Two other issues were a shut down of the plant to install some control valves that hadn’t initially been installed and with elevation changes in a redesign where payment card readers could be installed. The electrical conduits in this area were wrong, said Hill, and had to be relocated.

Hill said the County wanted a revised project schedule from the contractor, which hadn’t been received.

“You have to realize some of these things are beyond the control of everyone and we have to work together to get things back on track,” said Hill.

County manager Robyn Singleton reported that it wasn’t just the revenue loss that should be a concern to council.

He said nearby Graymont Western wants to connect to the water pipeline but that can’t be done until the whole St. Michael Pipeline project is signed off on. And that won’t happen until the truck fill is completed.

Woldanski wondered why there wasn’t a twolane truck drive at the site rather than large trucks moving to one side of the building, while smaller trucks used a second truck fill.

Hill said it was because of height of the fill arms for the different sized trucks.

Woitas added the roads into the facility also had to be fixed.

Acting Public Works supervisor Roy Lidgren said the roads had to be rebuilt and a new culvert needed to be installed.

“We’ve left a mess there,” said Woitas.

“And we have to change the radius of the turns.”

He said a semi coming to get water with a triaxle trailer would never get around the corner of the building.

In a later interview Singleton said the reservoir was built to service the industry just north of its location on highway 15 and Range Road 202.

“The purpose of those industries has changed which has impacted the water usage,” he states.

“It’s quite interesting because it’s not just optics it’s economics.”

He adds the County had conversations with potential customers about uses that would take all the water the reservoir could provide, but “if we want more water, we need to contact the regional pipeline authority and the supplier.”

He said that was requested years ago and has not yet been responded to.

Heartland problems slow down St. Michael pipeline commissioning.

Coupled with the building of the reservoir, was a pipeline that runs to St. Michael.

He said upgrades at the Heartland station have delayed its final commissioning. It runs from the Heartland plant past the Greymont Western site and then runs east to St. Michael.

“The primary reason

for building was that was that the people of St. Michael received their water from a shallow well near a feedlot operation.

“Environment doesn’t like that,” said Singleton.

he said. “We’d like them to be buying from us, but that’s where the as built drawings didn’t align with what’s underground.”

He admits that means redesigns have to be

done and expects that is currently underway.

Singleton admits that once it’s all built there will be pipeline to St. Michael that is designed for future expansion.

“We’ll need that water

eventually for both industrial and residential uses,” he said. “The end result is to provide water to the north end of the County.”

The Heartland Water Reservoir currently lack truckfills and proper turning radius for tandem trucks wanting to get water. Problems with original engineering drawings have lead to the project being delayed and exceeding its original budget. That, in turn, has delayed final commissioning of the St. Michael Water corridor which will service industry and residential users to the northeast of the County.

Grants to build the pipeline were originally rejected by the Federal Conservative government but when the Liberals were put into power it was granted.

He further adds the original access was to be directly off Highway 15, but Alberta Transportation rejected this because if loaded trucks headed along the highway uphill towards Bruderheim, they would become a hazard due the weight they carried.

So a road was proposed from the reservoir to Range Road 202. That design needs “some tweaking” to work for the largest trucks that may access the reservoir.

Singleton recognizes the frustrations local farmers have with the lack of truck fills at the reservoir.

“They have to go elsewhere to get their water which takes them time,”

We appreciate the great slideshow by Jaclyn Friend, Kerry Labreche, and Laurel Weisgerber. The most difficult task was the eulogy given

by Wendy Wilke who did an amazing job. We are thankful for the extra effort by Onel Potgeiter for arranging the sound system, provided and installed free of charge.

Shaun Hill asked for assistance setting up the hall and was met with a huge crowd offering their help. We’d like to mention the great support offered by the Class of 2015.

Kevin has so much gratitude for League Projects for being the most compassionate employer, they sent meals to both Kevin and Krissy as well as allowing him the time he needs with his family. Doug and Chantel Johnston closed up Kevin’s trailer, packed his clothes, and travelled here from Swift Current, great friends who were there when he needed them most.

Kevin’s hunting “family” has been a great source of support, they range near and far.

Friends and Family get us through difficult times and we are so very fortunate for ours, they travelled from all over to show their concern.

The food, cards, flowers, phone calls, hugs, and visits from everyone was truly remarkable. The donations made in Sierra’s memory were to organizations close to her heart. The Viking Alliance Church Hockey, Viking School Basketball Program, and the Alberta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Program. In lieu of thank you cards, we have made a donation to the Alberta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Program and rescued goslings and ducklings for which we know Sierra would be very proud.

The kindness and concern extended to our family made this a little easier to bear.

Rain couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t dampen Street Festival in Mundare on Canada Day MAUREEN SULLIVAN The Mundare Canada Day Street Festival was a great success. even if it was a little wet.

The two blocks in front of the town office were blocked off and benches and tables were set up for the town to come out and enjoy the evening show.

The two members of Indigo Circus kept the crowd excited as they got members of the audience to hula hoop and to try contortions. There was juggling and even a fire dancer.

Singer Nova Jarvis entertained the crowd with a few songs. Then the rain caused a delay of 30 minutes. Magician, Sheldon Casavant, brought the crowds back out after the rain and then the band Kevin Doofus and the Crew performed.

Food vendors were on hand to feed the crowd. Kids were invited to get a glitter tattoo, sponsored by the town or to get their faces painted.

The night finished with fireworks.
