Broker warns of Scammers posing as insurance agents going door-to-door Leslie Cholowsky Editor

James Insurance Group posted a warning on its social media over the weekend after receiving reports of people going door-to-door to collect people’s deductibles on the weekend. With so many properties in the Killam area clearly affected by hail damage, apparently scammers are attempting to defraud homeowners by claiming that they represent the insurance company and are there to ‘collect the deductible.’ James Insurance Group says this is an absolute scam. “Your deductible will be deducted from the settlement that is offered to you, you will not be asked to pay it outright. If you are unsure please call us with any questions.” They also recommend that everyone share this information with anyone who may be a target, specifically seniors.

Lisa Williams shared this photo of two of her children who set up a Lemonade Stand on Sunday, July 9, along the walking path in Killam. The two budding entrepreneurs raised $60 for their efforts. Instead of pocketing the profits, Mom and Dad matched it, and the family went out and purchased $120 worth of food for the Flagstaff Food Bank, which they all dropped off on Tuesday. What a great example of good citizenship!

CAPTURE program launched province wide by RCMP Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Alberta RCMP have announced a province-wide initiative to aid investigators in fighting rural crime, called CAPTURE. CAPTURE stands for Community Assisted Policing Through Use of Recorded Evidence. The RCMP have launched the program in all rural communities in Alberta. CAPTURE is a voluntary program where members of the public can register their home or business security cameras with RCMP, with the goal of reducing the time it would take for an investigator to locate potential video evidence, says Killam RCMP Corporal Jeremy Houle. “Investigators will be able to view a map of registered security cameras in

order to determine whether any are in the vicinity of a crime scene. “Investigators can then contact the registered owner of the camera and arrange with them to obtain a copy of the video.” The program does not provide any access to security camera feeds, he points out, it merely provides information on where cameras can be found. For those who own the security cameras, they may choose whether or not to share the footage with police on a case by case basis even if they are registered in the CAPTURE program. Alberta RCMP say that the program is completely voluntary, and secure. Information will not be shared or accessed unless an incident has taken place. “This strategy is another way the Alberta RCMP are working with our communities to help solve crime

faster, together. “By providing video footage to police during an investigation, communities increase the chance of a successful prosecution.” To get started, visit ruralalberta capture.ca and create an account. From there, you can enter your contact information and video camera locations on the secure site. An officer will contact you if they believe your camera may have captured evidence of a crime. CAPTURE contains a mapping program that will allow officers to be able to instantly see which residences in neighbouring areas have security video that may be of use. Data is shared with RCMP through a storage device they will provide, and

is extracted by the camera owner, at their convenience, and given to police. RCMP say “If you join CAPTURE, RCMP will become equipped with your contact information, enabling them to quickly contact you so that you may check your cameras for recordings that may help the investigation. “Through this program the RCMP and the citizens of Alberta are partnering together to make the community safer for everyone.” Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch was also getting ready to release a CAPTURE program for the Killam Detachment area, and at present is determining whether this project will proceed in light of the provincial roll out.
