Sunday night flash flood in Lamont wreaks havoc
FACEBOOK PHOTOS
Mother Nature wreaked havoc on Lamont Sunday night. There were reports of heavy rain and wash outs with reports of between three and eight inches of rain falling in the span of half an hour. Sandi Maschmeyer, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Lamont described the scene as a “monsoon flowing through town” as she witnessed some of the after math of the storm around 10 p.m. Maschmeyer said this was the worst flood in the 30 years she has been with the Town of Lamont. The system just couldnʼt handle the torrential downpour, and even the town office basement received four inches of water. There have been several reports of flooded basements with sewers backing up. The picture above on the left is the view of an alley facing south towards Secondary Highway 831. The entire main street was submerged in water.

ATM stolen from Lamont convenience store
MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS
A tow truck driver hooks up this truck around 9:15 a.m. Friday morning in an ally just off main street in Lamont. Strapped on the flat bed is part of the ATM machine that was stolen from Lamont Grocery earlier that morning. Fort Saskatchewan RCMP were on scene but did not offer comment at that time. Michelle Pinon Editor
Fort Saskatchewan RCMP received a phone call of a break and enter to Lamont Grocery shortly after 7 a.m. on Friday, July 8. According to police, suspects gained entry into the business by creating a hole in the wall on the east side of the building. The main item that was removed from the store was the ATM (Automated Teller
Machine). A person passing by the business scared off the suspects, and the ATM was left at the scene. One suspect was described as 5’2” weighing between 160 and 180 lbs., and the other suspect is described as 6’ 1” to 6’2” tall, thin, and weighing around 190 lbs. Both suspects were wearing open face ski masks and gloves. A stolen F550 truck was recovered by police a short time later.
Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Saskatchewan RCMP or Crimestoppers.
The owner of Lamont Grocery declined comment.

Heartland 101: High Tech in the Heartland SUBMITTED ARTICLE Inside a farm-style quonset just north of Fort Saskatchewan sits millions of dollars worth of instruments, tubes, pipes, and steel. It’s all assembled into Field Upgrading’s test facility. This is just one of the technology-leading projects that is putting Alberta’s Industrial Heartland on the innovation map. Between carbon capture and storage, offgas processing, energy mapping, and others, companies in the Heartland are exploring and adopting greener projects in our energy sector. “We were on the lookout for a cheaper and cleaner way to do this job,” explains Neil Camarta, President and CEO of Field Upgrading, who is testing technolo-
gy that produces low sulphur fuel from Alberta’s bitumen. The technology started as an idea, and after getting a passing grade in a laboratory setting, it was scaled up to build their 10 barrel per day upgrading pilot plant. The process itself is a relatively simple one. Combine high sulphur feedstock such as bitumen or heavy oil with molten sodium and a small amount of hydrogen. Within the reaction process, sodium seeks out the sulphur like a five year old on a candy treasure hunt. The mixture is then separated to yield low sulphur fuel, heavy metals, and waste sulphur. The sodium is recycled back into the process. Low sulphur fuel could be the answer to a

pollution problem among the global shipping industry. Currently, the shipping industry burns about 4 million barrels per day of bottom-of-the-barrel quality fuel. Based on sulphur emissions, the world’s 15 largest ships actually generate more pollution than that of every single passenger vehicle on the planet combined. But the bottom-of-the-barrel fuel is much cheaper than its lower sulphur alternatives. Several countries, including Canada, are trending toward stricter sulphur regulations in fuel. Therefore, shipping companies will be forced to find sources of lower sulphur fuel. For Field Upgrading, this could open the valve to an enormous global demand for their low sulphur marine fuel. The next step for Field Upgrading is a 2,500 barrel per day demonstration facility. “Oil sands is a high tech business,” says Camarta. And with that, it takes testing the technology in stages. Going from 10 barrels to 2,500 barrels per day allows Field Upgrading to make any necessary modifications. For more information about Field Upgrading, visit www.fieldupgrading.com. Opinion The undiscovered virtues Letter to the Editor of weeds are perplexing For almost a week now I’ve been trying to get the weeds in my backyard under control. It seems like a loosing battle, but I can’t live with all of the unruly thistles, stinkweed, and God knows what else is growing in my plot of black dirt that also features an apple tree and multiple shrubs. I also discovered several stands of barley that the birds may have inadvertently dropped and sown their way into the ground. I thought about taking a picture of my current nemesis; but I was too embarrassed to share it with anyone. However, I will tell you that most of the weeds were between two and three feet tall. If this was my front yard, I’d be charged with an unsightly by municipal authorities. It is such an embarrassment that that alone is motivation to get it cleaned up as quickly as possible. I’m sure my mother is rolling over in her grave. I guess the current situation I find myself in is a bit like karma. You see, my mom’s idea of a garden was a couple of acres, and growing up planting the garden was a given, along with picking vegetables and raspberries every other day. I had to laugh as even the raspberries that were shovelled out of another area of my backyard, started to regrow with all of the rain, and now are around four inches high. Mother Nature clearly has other plans than mine. For all of my weeding, I should have just left the raspberries intact, and grown some vegetables to eat, at least I would have something to enjoy as a result of my hard work. I love quotations, and when I Googled weed quotations, one of the websites listed stated: 25 inspirational weed quotes from The Stoner’s Cookbook. I came across a quote Bob Marley said in RevolutionNews.US : “I do smoke, but I don’t go through all this trouble just because I want to make my drug of choice legal. It’s about personal freedom. We should have the right in this country to do what we want, if we don’t hurt anybody.” There are residents in Canada who
not only agree with Marley, and have advocating the legalization of marijuana in this country for many years as well. On June 30th, the federal government announced a task force and public consultation that will form a new system. According to a news release, “Today, Canada is taking an important step towards legalizing, strictly regulating and restricting access to marijuana, working to ensure marijuana is kept out of the hands of children, and the profits out of the hands of criminals.” The press release went on to say, “The Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation, chaired by the Hon. Anne McLellan, and vice-chaired by Dr. Mark Ware, is made up of nine distinguished experts in public health, substance abuse, criminal justice, law enforcement, economics, industry and those with expertise in production, sales and distribution. The Task Force will also engage representatives from Indigenous governments and organizations, as well as young Canadians.” All Canadians will have the chance to share their views on the design of this new system by going on the link www.canada.ca/heatlh and inputting information until the August 29th deadline. Since I love quotations, here is one from Ralph Waldo Emerson, “What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have never been discovered.” The Federal Government has committed to introducing legislation on the legalizations of marijuana next spring. The legislation will come into effect once the regulations are developed and brought into force. According to the federal government, the illegal marijuana industry is estimated to cost $7 billion per year, which costs the government spends $2.3 billion to enforce. Canada has one of the highest rates of marjuana use in the world among children and youth.
My good friend and neighbour died on July 3rd at age 94, it would be his 63rd wedding anniversary on July 18th. It’s a good thing his wife paid his taxes for both their house in town and their farm before June 30th otherwise the Town of Lamont would charge them another $458 and some sense (cents) calculated as interest and arrears. No, the word cents is not misspelled. The Town of Lamont calculates this immediately at 12 per cent when the rule and warning on your tax form was six per cent for the first month, nine per cent for the second month, and 12 per cent for the remainder of the year. Now I suppose you don’t want to hear about Ft. McMurray anymore but the last I hear is that Nashville sent pros to suck out another $2 million out of the already generous Canadians. But other news that insurance companies waffled on their payout and the Red Cross still wants you to donate, and I’m sure that you would like, and I’m sure that you would like to know that the CEO of Red Cross makes more than the Prime Minister. You think these are horror stories. Wood Buffalo has radio advertisements that there is no excuse for not paying your taxes due on June 30th, whether you are dying or only have a
charred empty lot and burnt out car parked in the driveway. And where is the (cents) sense in that? How much tax do you pay on that, especially when your tax notice probably burned? I’m sure that Wood Buffalo with their special status, just like the Hamlet of Sherwood Park and Jasper National Park will be the first in line to grab the $12.4 million the Federal government announced is available to municipalities for infrastructure. Interesting that the allotment was the same amount as the insurance buear announced on July 7. None of this money is available for three concrete driveways in the lowest part of 46 Street where negligence in road
repair and storm drain caused property damage. Is there any sense (cents) anywhere in this bureaucratic empire to capitalized on this? Maybe we should call in the fire from heaven to rid these money worshippers and let the kind souls that have already showed concern for fellow man call the shots. The latest increase in tax in the 28 houses involved, still does not cover wages for one CEO. Be very careful where you put your X in the next election if you don’t find someone strong enough on the ballot to get rid of these vultures. I would suggest write in none of the above. Alec Babich

From Where I Sit: Put This To Rest
By Hazel Anaka No matter how old our kids get, most parents
are eager to help them when they need it. If we’re blessed, the calls for help never fall into the major dilemma category. So when Hilary decided more than a year ago that she wanted to refinish the table and six chairs that Roy’s parents bought in the 1962, we knew we’d be drafted into helping. We’ve stored them in our garage until finally she had time to come out and tackle the project. She came loaded down with stain and varathane, sandpaper and her Black & Decker mouse sander. We assembled our Porter & Cable sander, more
sandpaper, poly to protect the area, chemical strippers, masks and gloves, and various hand tools. As we worked to remove the seats and deconstruct the chairs and table, it became apparent just how big and painstaking the job would be. And much like the pain of childbirth, it’s best to allow memories to fade before the next pregnancy or furniture project is attempted. I saved one seat cover to use as a pattern when she buys new fabric. We marked the various parts so the reassembly would be trouble-free. And then
the brutal work began. Even Roy joined us. To avoid the boredom and pain of the same repetitive motions, we changed jobs every so often. None of us could believe how effective the Mouse was. It sounds puny but is a powerhouse and fits a female hand so much better than the bigger tools. When we could no longer stand, we quit for the day, only to resume the next day. Hours and hours and hours of work by three people and the can of stain was never even opened. We knew we could have assembled a roomful of Ikea furniture in the same

We kept something from the scrap heap. We honed a skill. We got a new war story to share. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take another year to get the staining, topcoats, and reupholstering done. SUBMITTED ARTICLE Air Products (NYSE: ) and its subsidiary, Air Products Canada Ltd., today held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to formally dedicate its new world-scale production facility in Ft. Saskatchewan, The Air Products facility produces over 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of hydrogen and is connected to Air Products’ existing hydrogen pipeline network, which supplies refiners, upgraders, chemical processors and other industries in the Alberta Industrial Heartland region. Air Products employees were joined by customers, elected officials and community stakeholders to commemorate the ribboncutting ceremony at the facility. “This plant and its connection to our are key to meeting the growing hydrogen demands of our customers located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, which is a very important region to Air Products from a business growth standpoint. ATCO now offering innovative water treatment SUBMITTED ARTICLE ATCO is now offering innovative water treatment solutions to customers in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. The company previously entered into a long-term commercial arrangement with Air Products Canada Ltd. to provide water treatment service for the company’s hydrogen facility near Fort Saskatchewan, and is now capable of offering the service across the region. “Treated water is a critical component to industrial processes and the provision of this service allow customers to focus on their core business,” said Patrick Creaghan, President of ATCO Storage & Liquids Division. “The addition of water treatment to ATCO’s water system represents another offer-
ing in our growing suite of water and wastewater services.” ATCO is developing the infrastructure to provide treated water through a multi-user water system to customers throughout Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. With treated water delivered directly to their faciality, customers benefit from substantially improved industrial water quality and can free up land on their sites previously dedicated to water treatment. The provision of water treatment services is the latest milestone in ATCO’s continuing history of delivering energy infrastructure solutions in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Within the past seven years, the company has completed more than $70 million in
projects to expand its industrial water system. By allowing customers to connect to an integrated single system, ATCO’s multi-user system provides several environmental benefits including, reducing the number of intake points required on the river and providing the ability to capture and reuse treated wastewater from customer operations to be reintegrated into the system. This water treatment agreement builds upon ATCO’s existing contract with Air Products Canada Ltd. to provide industrial water to the company’s hydrogen facility. The treatment service is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2016.ATCO’s Storage & Liquids Division builds, owns and operates natural gas,

Bruderheim Motel 6 nearing completion The hotel is currently expected to open in September, although a specific date has not been fixed as yet, stated Doug Sullivan, economic development officer, for the Town of Bruderheim. The hotel owners held a job fair for the hotel in June and received about 30 applications for the estimated 25 positions, with a focus on hiring local residents as much as possible. Ownership is currently interviewing for the position of hotel manager, pointed out Sullivan. He went on to say, “The hotel will attract business to Bruderheim, providing the opportunity for events such as sports tournaments, another option for housing for temporary workers, etc. Addition of the hotel is also expected to increase business for restaurants, particularly for lunches and dinner, groceries, and entertainment.

Sod turning held for Lamont seniors lodge Michelle Pinon Editor
New seniors housing is on the horizon in Lamont. On Tuesday, July 5 the official sod turning for the new two-storey, 55 unit facility was held on site. Officially turning the sod was Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing, Kelly Wagar, Affordable Housing Consultant with the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood, Lamont Mayor Bill Skinner, chair of the Lamont County Housing Foundation, and Lamont County Deputy Reeve Dan Warawa. The new facility, that is expected to open a year from now, will replace the existing Beaverhill Pioneer Lodge which was built in 1964. The new lodge will include larger rooms and feature a modern fire safety system. The Governments of Canada and Alberta are contributing more than $9 million to the project through the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement. The Province is contributing $1.7 million through the Alberta Social Housing and Corporation surplus earnings, and the remainder of the funding will be provided by the Lamont County Housing Foundation (LCHF). The foundation is responsible for the provision of social housing to resi-

LCHF board chair Bill Skinner said he spoke with the site superintendent last week, and the rain hasn’t set back construction. “About a year from now the lodge will be opening,” stated Skinner. Current lodge members are excited about plans for their new accommodation, and he said there will be many benefits to local seniors. One of the unique aspects of the project is the inclusion of the New Horizons Seniors Centre into the new lodge. Skinner said it will
afford residents more flexibility and closer proximity in regards to activities and services the seniors club will have to offer. “It will be easier for residents to participate without having to leave the building.” Skinner also expects the majority of the 55 units to be rented by the time of opening day. “A lot of people prefer to stay in the area near family and friends.” He also expects there will be interest from people living in neighbouring urban centres because there is a shortage of housing in those communities. The new facili-
ty will feature larger and brighter rooms, as well as several suites for couples, and everything will be up to today’s building standards. Skinner has no doubt the new lodge will better meet the needs and expectations of seniors. Having nearby doctor offices, health network office, hospital services, and a local pharmacy, will also assist seniors and better meet their needs. “As people age, their needs for medical care increase, and it’s certainly beneficial to have those amenities.”

Rev. Oleksii Surayev, left, is the current priest of the parish, and behind him is former parish priest Rev. Michael Fourik.
On Thursday July 7, St. John the Baptist day, the Russian Greek Catholic Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist in the Village of Chipman celebrated one hundred years of service to the Orthodox community. Long-time parishioner Fred Pewarchuk, who organized the event with his wife Lil, said the service was attended by Bishop Iov, and an assembly of nine Priests, two Deacons, two Subdeacons and three altar boys. The Clergy came from Vancouver, Saskatoon, Regina, Red Deer, Edmonton, Spillimacheen, BC, and local priest from Lamont. In attendance were 150 adults and children, plus the Clergy. The service started with the greeting of His Grace, Bishop Iov and the clothing of him by the clergy. Rev. Mircea Panciuk delivered the homily, which paid tribute to the church’s patron saint as well as pioneers and current parishioners. “Saint John The Baptist was the last and greatest prophet to be sent by God...When the people came across the water and chose John The Baptist, they were also prophets. You are descendents of these families and announcers to the world,” stated Rev. Panciuk. He went on to say, “Pray for your protector of this temple...for our health and salvation here on earth, and to be brought back to the place we were meant to be....life everlasting.” After the Divine Liturgy, blessing of Holy water took place in the church, then a procession followed around the
Church, blessing all four sides, with a stop at the bell tower where a short memorial was held for all the deceased. The day finished with a sumptuous meal served in the church basement. The history of St. John The Baptist Russian Orthodox Church of Chipman is a living memorial of the faith and dedication of its original founding pioneers and their descendents. According to the church’s history, in the early 1900’s ten pioneer homesteaders in the vicinity of present day Chipman joined together and resolved to establish an Orthodox parish of the Russian Greek Orthodox Church in America. The family heads were: Fred Antoniuk, W. Fedora, Stefan Holowaychuk, Mike Kleparchuk, Wm. Melnyk, Fedore Pewarchuk, Michailo Sorochuk, Petro Stefura, John Winnick and John Ulan. They purchased 10 acres of government school land across the road from the present site. However, their resources were insufficient to build a church, and they travelled 12 miles north to attend Holy Trinity Russo-Greek Orthodox Church at Wostok, where the first Orthodox service in Canada was held on July 18, 1897. A church and priest’s residence were built there in 1900. Around that same time, the Church of The Nativity of The Blessed Virgin Mary was built two miles east and one mile north of the Village of Chipman on land belonging to Petro Stefura. This church served the religious needs of two groups of people, one group, the Uniate Greek Catholic, professing Catholicism under
the jurisdiction of the Pope of Rome. The other, professing Orthodoxy, in the Russian Greek Orthodox Church of America. These two groups worked together, sharing the church and cemetery. Between 1915 and 1916 disagreements began within the group and it was decided that each group go its separate way. This Orthodox group convinced the 10 families from Chipman to join with them, and they now had the majority of members. The ten families were persuaded to pay $1,500 in compensation for their equity in the common ownership of church parish property to the Greek Catholic group, which, then withdrew from the parish and joined the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Parish in the Village of Chipman where a church had been built in 1915. The newly formed Orthodox group continued to use the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary until disaster struck on Feb. 23, 1928 when a fire of unknown origin destroyed the church. Later on the 10 acre plot of land that was owned by the 10 families was exchanged with CNR for the land where the present day church is situated. The second church that was built burned down on Sept. 27, 1963. By the following year a building committee was formed. Because of estimated costs, it was recommended that the parish rebuild the church, and Sam Widynowski was retained as head carpenter, and work began with donated labour. The church was finished in 1965.
Deacon Andrei Boldireff, left, assists His Grace Iov, Bishop of Kashira, middle, during communion. On the right is Deacon Joseph Winnick.

A procession of clergy, parishioners, and attendees walked around the church singing and praying following the service indoors.

Radke family receives Century Farm Award Michelle Pinon Editor
The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV) served as the backdrop for the Alberta Century Farm & Ranch Awards on Thursday, July 7. Lamont area farmer Neil Radke, and his wife Karen, were on hand to participate in the awards presentation, banquet, and program, along with

Also on hand for the event was Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood, and Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier. The Radke’s, who currently farm two miles west of Lamont, were very happy and humble to receive the honour. It was back on July 17 of
1914 that Neil’s grandfather Gustavo purchased a quarter section NE2455-20W4. Gustavo married Ernestine (nee Sampert) from the Bruderheim area. They had six children. Son Leo, took over the family farm with his wife Martha in 1952. Four years later they purchased another quarter section kitty-corner to the existing one. Even though Leo turned over the reigns to his son Neil in 1988, he kept a hand in the operation, and was always helping out, even up to his death in 2014. Neil said he also expanded the number of acres of farmland, purchasing a 40 acre parcel east of the homestead in 1993, and another 98 acres across from the Richardson Pioneer elevator in Lamont in 1996. Neil, who is 61 years of age says he might retire when he’s 70. Neil and Karen have two children, Patricia and Matthew. “We operated a dairy from 1960-2004, and still have a few head of cattle to keep the pasture down. “We have 160 acres of hay, and 160 acres of land we seed.” He said he has always

What he cherishes most about farming, is the freedom the lifestyle affords him and his family. He feels very blessed, and says: “Basically every year is a good year.” During Ag. Minister
Oneil Carlier’s address before the start of the banquet, he said, “It is an honour to recognize people who contribute so much to their communities and acknowledge this incredible legacy that is passed down through many genera-

tributor to the economy.” He concluded his brief speech by congratulating all of the recipients for their commitment to faming and the contribution they have made to the province.
