New Bruderheim development coming to the West Woodlands opment would have an entrance on to 52 Avenue. He added plans are being development this year and to the best of his knowledge development should begin in 2019.

Hauch explains West Woodlands is still being completed with some of the final homes being built this year.

He added a developer is working with town administration to develop the outside ring of the Brookside area of town.

JOHN MATHER Edmonton-based Prism Engineering is looking at developing land it purchased from Strata Developments in the West Woodlands area of Bruderheim.

“It’s a fairly significant development with R1, R2 and R3 housing,” said Bruderheim mayor Karl Hauch. “There will be green space and a storm water retention pond and it will link with our town’s existing trail system.”

will have to be done on the West Woodlands area.

“We’re fortunate to have some good plans in place and there’s lots of interest in our community,” he said. “The idea we can continue to grow is a positive feeling we can move forward.”

With development of the town’s annexed lands, Hauch sees a bright future for the community’s growth.

“The time is now to put together building blocks

in place for the town’s future growth,” he states.

“We are positioned well to move forward.”

Hauch sees the added development of the Industrial Heartland will help encourage people to locate in Bruderheim.

“Reasonable land prices and tax incentives like our tax free for three program will attract people to our town.” He added the community park being planned for the town is an additional incentive for people to

locate in the community.

At Bruderheim council, July 4, council was first told of the development.

Director of Planning and Legislative Service, Sherry Cote, told council that as the project moved forward she expected there would be a public meeting in August or early fall where the plans for the development would first be revealed.

Council also passed first reading of a by-law changing the land use by-law which changes

the proposed development area from urban reserve to R1, R2 and R3 that allows for various types of residential development.

Following the open house, Cote told council there would be a public hearing prior to the final readings of the by-law.

Opinion Minority incarcerations not a policing or judicial problem The very people calling everyone who disagrees with them in this politically correct world a racist, are the same ones who segregate people into little boxes at their own convenience usually for political gain.

In the United States, blacks and hispanics are being touted as victims because of the large percentage of those races who end up arrested and in jail. Police and the judicial system are demonized because of this, like they are choosing the people they arrest - picking them from a lineup like schoolyard basketball players.

In Canada, police and the judicial system are similarly being blamed for the high percentage of indigenous citizens in prisons. Again, implying that they are being picked on and arrested for absolutely no reason by police.

But leaving out facts to sell a point is dishonest. The truth is, and police will tell you in both the US and Canada, that these racial groups more frequently live in desperate situations and resort to crime at a rate many times that of other races who live with less poverty per capita.

In two separate opinion pieces I recently read, neither author included any crime statistics comparing races… only that these races were occupying our jails at a percentage higher than their population would suggest.

In the USA, blacks occupy 39.4 percent of jail cells, while hispanics inhabited 20.6 percent. The interesting fact to ignore is that black men commit nearly half of all murders in America, while the black population (men and women) is only about 13 percent.

These groups slanting facts also point out that blacks are killed by police at a higher rate than their 13 percent of the population would suggest, however fail to point out that blacks commit violent crimes also at four times the expected rate. Causing violence creates violent situations which police are involved with, and sometimes it leads to killings by police for their own protection. Remember they are the innocents here, trying to break up situations and help. They show up after they were often called to come.

In Canada, around a quarter of the male prison population is indigenous, and likewise over a third of females incarcerated. This unlikeliness is five or six times the expectation considering the indigenous population in Canada is only about five percent. Again, what is not mentioned is that one third of murders in Canada annually are committed by Aboriginals, and that 25 percent of victims are also Aboriginals.

In the US, over 90 percent of blacks murdered are killed by other blacks. Similar numbers of caucasians are killed only by other caucasians.

Trying to throw the race card down at every whim to rile up the population of political correctness, is nothing more than purposely misleading people into believing there is far more racism and corruption than is reality.

Crime today, like all other times, is caused by poverty and the political system, not the police or judicial system.

Instead of blaming a cop today, thank a cop today.

Developer sees strong potential in Bruderheim - speculating on a boom in the area JOHN MATHER An Edmonton developer is hoping to tap into the growth of Alberta at the right time as he plans a new subdivision for Bruderheim.

Glen Kennedy, principle of 1427987 Alta Ltd., purchased about 25 acres of land in the community from Edmonton-based Strata Developments six months ago.

Kennedy said there are services stubbed into the property and he would have to extend those into the new development.

“We got the first reading of redistricting done by council,” he said. “So that allows us to put in a mix of single family residential, medium density and high density.”

He added the company’s initial plans for the development are abut 40 per cent single family, 40 per cent medium density duplex homes and 20 per

cent high density four- or six-plex type of developments. The height of any planned buildings have yet to be determined he said.

“We don’t have anything specific in mind yet,” he reported. “We’ve been talking to administration on some different creative ideas. We’re planning more of a modernized type of development.”

Kennedy is the owner of Edmonton-based Prism engineering, but the land purchased in Bruderheim is through a separate holding company.

He said the company has other properties with similar development plans in New Sarepta and a 20-acres plot of land near Boyle.

The company is hoping to get its planning and engineering drawings finished in time to

allow for a start on the development in the 2019 construction season.

“It all depends on what the market will bear as well,” explained Kennedy.

“We see Bruderheim as a great little community within half an hour of Edmonton with Fort Saskatchewan nearby.”

“Our intention is to try and get things ramped up in the next year and catch the next burst of growth in these similar communities.”

Kalyna Musical Theatre camps perform at St. Michael MAUREEN SULLIVAN The 2018 Kalyna Musical Theatre Camps performance of Pop's Soda Shop took place Friday, July 13, at the St. Michael Recreation Centre. The camp is part of the Kalyna Country Performing Arts Association.

Students aged four to fourteen years of age participated in the five day musical theatre camp held in St Michael, ending with a dinner theatre performance.

The children are from Lamont County and all over the Kalyna area Smoky Lake or Waskatenau, as well as some cousins who join with their family from as far away as Cold Lake.

The children have various musical performance experience, some who have attended camp for many years and new participants as well.

The students work with a vocal instructor daily to create a production by the end of the

week. It is an opportunity for the children to showcase their talents and develop their skills in the performing arts.

The performance featured the players singing songs from the 1950s.

Director, Erin Got and Stage Manger, Jody Zachoda produced an enjoyable show in under a week. They were helped by assistants Reece Gott and Madison Widmer.

"Enthusiasm is the secret fountain of youth," said Zachoda of her students, "never lose it."

The cast was made up of Cassidy Childs, Hayden Childs, Brooke Gott, Rachel Klos, Elliana Kordyban, Gabriella Katylak, Mary Alice Maklin, Stella Maklin, Magnolia Moonen, Kaisa Pinch, Kali Przekop, Talia Rogoza, Hailey Ross, Liam Schiach, Ethan Svitch, Meredes Widmer, Jonas Wytrykush, Sawyer Wytrykush and Julia Yost.

Kids can travel back in time this summer MAUREEN SULLIVAN Local children will get a once in a lifetime experience to travel back in time to the 1920s at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village.

They will get their own historic clothing, a chance to interact with farm animals, play historic games, cook, garden, play games and make crafts.

For over 30 years, the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society have run the week long, Historic Children's Program for 6 -11 year olds and the Junior Interpreter Program for 12 -16 year olds.

The Historic Chidren’s Program is a day camp, where the children wear

costumes, play games, attend a one room school house, create crafts and play games from a hundred years ago.

The Junior Interpreter Program allows the teen to become a part of the portrayal of living history. They will also wear costumes and will participate in the farm and house activities throughout the museum during the week.

"The Historic Children's Program is an opportunity for participants to leave their electronics at home and experience life as a pioneer," says Marcie Mazurenko, Executive Director for the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society. "They get to bet-

ter understand the lifestyle their grandparents or great grandparents experienced as a child. The children will be learning about history and enjoying themselves during a week they will never forget."

The one week camps run from July 9 to Aug 24. Week 6, Aug 20 - 24,

bussing to the camp will be available from Lamont, Vegreville and Mundare.

The not for profit, Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society supports the Village in preserving history and heritage for present and future generations.

Return of the flock to the Lamont United Church's 125 anniversary MAUREEN SULLIVAN Lamont United Church celebrated the 125 anniversary of the congregation during service on Sunday, July 16. There was a nice turn out of past members, including Reverend Bob Settle to celebrate with the current congregation led by Reverend Debbie Brill.

Reverend Brill spoke of the fellowship and community support that past members shared through the years as well as the many community groups that were led by church members.

After service a potluck was held in the hall. Kent Harold gave a talk on the history of the area and the importance of the church and hospital and community, touching on how they have been intertwined through the

Lamont Ag. Society celebrates 100 years Summer Sizzler Rodeo crowds and cowboys endure bad weather

Cold weather and muddy conditions couldn’t detract from the crowd’s love of rodeo, at the Summer Sizzler over the weekend.

There was the usual Bareback Riding, Tie Down Roping, Barrel Racing, Team Roping, Bull Riding, and Steer Wrestling events despite poor conditions.

The day opened with a presentation for the 100 anniversary Muddy conditions didn’t help this cowboy take down his steer. of the Lamont Agriculture Society. Rebecca Joseph, a member of the Society, spoke about the history of the organization and then presentations were made to the society. Tim Burton, Chairman of the Provincial Ag Society presented a plaque. Burton mentioned that Lamont was honoured at the AG Society Convention earlier this year.

Reeve Daniel Warawa presented a plaque on behalf of the County, stating this milestone should have the community full of pride. Town of Lamont Councillor Kirk Perrin congratulated the society on 100 years Kids slog through the muddy rodeo arena as they make their way on behalf of the Town of to the muttin’ bustin’ event.

Lamont. Brudeheim's Mayor Karl Hauch presented a plaque, stating that over 1.6 million people attended an agricultural society event since 2006, showing just how important Ag societies are to the communities they serve.

MLA Jessica Littlewood, presented a plaque on behalf of the province, citing the Vision of the Lamont Ag Society: The Lamont and District Agricultural Society offers a fun, family spirit to enhance the diversification or our rural and urban communities - and its Mission is Strengthening and enhancing a sustainable agricultural community through education and entertainment.

She spoke of the incredibly hard working volunteers and how the society brings the comJr. Bullriding munity together.

Terry Eleniak, President of the Ag Society, then gave a thank you and mentioned the lifetime members of the society followed by free cake for all.

After the rodeo, was a fan favorite - the combine crunch followed by the steak dinner and dance.

Sunday morning, events finished up and the 2018 Summer Sizzler Rodeo weekend came to a fun and exciting conclusion Lamont agricultural society director Emily Lopushinsky prepares for the many who attended. to flip some pancakes during the Summer Sizzler Rodeo.

Greyhound Service cancellation underlies importance of County transportation study JOHN MATHER While the silver dog hasn’t been seen running in most of Lamont County for sometime, the cancellation of Greyhound Bus service in western Canada shows a disconnect with rural centres that needs to be fixed, claims Judy Schueler.

Schueler is the co-chair of the Lamont County Rural Transportation Coalition, which is currently conducting a needs assessment survey throughout the county.

Currently there is a Greyhound route from Vegreville to Edmonton that does have stops at the Mundare Jct. (Hwy 15 & 16), Elk Island National Park gate, Bremner Jct. and Sherwood Park, before terminating in Edmonton. The bus route originates in Winnipeg as Greyhound route 5405. A route from Saskatoon to Edmonton and return also stops in Vegreville. That route will cease in October.

Local Fort Saskatechewan Vegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood said the provincial government has allotted money for a rural transportation pilot project.

“There are several rural communities that have been able to access some money for rural transportation projects,” she said. She added based on their success, similar programs could be utilized in Mundare or Lamont.

These pilot projects include a regular shuttle bus between Camrose and Edmonton, regional transit linking Grande Prairie with five nearby towns, and expanded van service between Spirit River, Rycroft and Grande Prairie.

Littlewood added the province will speak with the federal government

announced July 9 it is ending its passenger bus and freight services in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and cancelling all but one route in B.C. The cancellations will result in 75 job losses in Edmonton, Greyhound Canada communications adviser Veronica Rivas said. In total, 107 communities in Alberta will lose service.

“This decision is regretful and we sympathize with the fact that many small towns are going to lose service,” Greyhound Canada senior vice-president Stuart Kendrick said in an interview with The Canadian Press. “But simply put, the issue that we have seen is the routes in rural parts of Canada – specifically Western Canada – are just not sustainable anymore.”

“Greyhound cancelling its service tells me rural transportation is really going downhill,” Schueler explained. “For ourselves, we’re really going to have to step up and go to the province for grants or some sort of service.”

She says the need is there but the type of service that’s needed is more hands on, where Greyhound was more pick up and drop off at centre.

“We seeing more people want door to door service,” she said.
