Zoo 2 U entertains children and parents alike at Tofield

BY KARI JANZEN Zoo 2 U was in Tofield on Wednesday July 12 at the Tofield Arena.

The summer programs in Tofield worked together with the Tofield/ Beaver FCSS to have the event put on for the kids.

“It was a partnership with the Town of Tofield Recreation Program and the Tofield Municipal Library program,” Tracey Boast Radley, director of FCSS said.

Over 120 kids and parents were in attendance to be informed and inspired

by Melinda and her assistant Ally of Zoo 2 U from Sherwood Park.

Many reptiles including a tortoise, a snake, geckos, and a bearded dragon

were among the showcase Zoo 2 U brought, along with some parrots and a rabbit.

Some kids had the opportunity to hold or feed the animals during the program, and all the children had a chance to pet some of the animals at the end.

Melinda was a great entertainer and had the kids enthralled for the hour long program. Zoo 2 U has been part of the summer program in Tofield before, but not in the last few years.

“I know that it's come out, but not in the last few years for sure because of covid and everything. So, first time in a while,” Boast Radley said.

“I think we'll definitely be bringing them back.”

Beaver County and most of Alberta inundated with smoke

BY JOHN MATHER Smoke from wildfires in B.C. and Alberta have been impacting air quality in the Lamont and Beaver County areas for the past week and during the second quarter of the year according to the Fort Air Partnership.

In a report issued last week, the Partnership indicated there were 544 exceedences of the Alberta Ambient Air Quality Objectives (AAAQO) and 88 exceedences of the 24-hour objective.

The increased number of high and very-highrisk AQHI hours resulted from wildfire smoke and summertime smog in the FAP airshed, the report stated.

“Wildfire smoke increased the amount of fine particulate matter in our airshed, especially from May 16-25 and June 8-14, but also on June 2-3

level and on July 17 they had dropped to a lower 4 to 6 level according to a stateent issued by Environment Canada.

It further added, “People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke.

Stay inside if you are feeling unwell and experiencing symptoms.”

The smoke levels were expected to drop by July 18 as rain was expected to fall across the area.

Local photographer receives accreditation in “Wedding Story” from Professional Photographers of Canada

BY KARI JANZEN Carla Lehman, a local professional photographer born and raised in Tofield, has recently received her accreditation from the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) in the Wedding Story genre.

On Lehman’s blog she wrote, “For Wedding Story, ten images must be submitted that tell the story of a couple’s wedding.”

Lehman said when she first heard the news, “I was actually completely shocked and then I was overjoyed. I actually bounced up out of my seat and did a little

happy dance. It is very difficult to get accreditation on your first submission. I received a grade of very good, which is amazing. So I was very, very happy.

“The accreditation process is actually quite stringent. You're judged by a group of your peers who are master level photographers, or higher level photographers, and they have been trained in the judging process and they know what to look for. And so when you're submitting your work for accreditation, you want to be submitting your best work. And it's all about attention to detail

and making sure the images are above average quality.”

While receiving accreditation in Wedding Story is a huge honour, Lehman has been accredited in other genres as well. “I've been accredited for a while in different genres but for this wedding portrait, I just have never submitted and I've been a wedding photographer for 20 years and I thought this is ridiculous. This is something that's on my heart and I love telling wedding stories, and I need to actually submit one of my weddings for accreditation and so I decided in

early spring 2023 that I was going to choose one of my weddings from last year and submit it.”

Lehman used photos from Riley and Delanie Ferguson’s wedding in 2022. In Lehman’s blog she said, “I don’t photograph weddings, I document love, connections, moments, memories.”

Expanding on that, Lehman said that “everything that I photograph I am photographing at the best of my ability to create a legacy for my clients. One of my clients said to me once, ‘I don't see what your photos look like, I see what they feel like.’ And that was the greatest compliment I could ever get. Because that's why I do what I do.”

Through the accreditation process and Lehman’s experience with being a note taker for the PPOC, she says

Tofield’s Carla Lehman “it's taught me to be more particular about my compositions and about lighting and about staging my photos. They judge very strictly and they are very particular and so spending that year as a note taker, I really learned about what the judges are looking for. That more than the accreditation process actually changed my thoughts about how to photograph something. And it makes a

huge difference.

“I think they're an excellent organization. And it is peer run and it is peer led and it is there to support photographers and to help them grow.”

Lehman’s professional photography business began in 2003 but she has always had a passion for photography. “Even in high school I was the photographer for our newspaper and our yearbook.”

Four to face off in Ryley by-election

BY JOHN MATHER Four people have thrown their hats in the rings to contest the two seats up for grabs in Ryley’s Aug. by-election.

When nominations for the by-election closed on July 17, Stephanie Dennis, Cynthia Heslin, Matthew Kowalski and Kimberly Murphy had put their names forward

to contest the election.

While currently unofficial, the four had until July 19 at noon to withdraw if they so choose.

The by-election is to replace the seats previously held by disgraced Mayor Nik Lee and former Deputy Mayor Nola Wood Herrick.

Lee was removed from council by public peti-

tion, while Wood Herrick submitted her resignation earlier this year.

The by-election will be held Aug. 14.

Of the four Heslin has posted information about herself on the politics of Ryley Facebook page.

She served two terms as mayor or deputy mayor of the Village from 2010 to 2013 and 2017 to

2021.

She is currently employed at the Holden Rural Academy as the school secretary as well as the assistant to the principal and superintendent.

“I have watched, like most of you, the destructive way our village has been treated in the last 21 months,” she posted.

No community support main reason lumber yard is closing

BY KARI JANZEN After nearly 26 years of serving Tofield and area, Tofield Lumber will soon be closing its doors.

“The covid, and the price of lumber, everything else, it’s just not viable. The taxes, and the rest of it just kill you” said Ken Brown, the owner who opened Tofield Lumber in October of 1997 with his late wife, Charlotte.

“If you want to put some numbers to it, we have to sell $30,000 of merchandise in a year just to pay for our taxes.

And then of course, you get a $3,000 bill in December for fuel when you’re not selling anything,” said store employee Arnold

Brownridge.

“I grew up here in Tofield, and have had several businesses in Tofield,” Brown said.

Brown’s father, Earle, owned Brown’s Tofield Transport, a trucking company he started in 1946 and Ken Brown bought him out in 1985.

The building, built in 1973, has been used for more businesses than just the lumber yard and the trucking company, including a bottle depot that Brown’s wife Charlotte and mother Gladys ran, Brownridge said.

Brown and his wife opened Tofield Lumber because the previous lumber yard in Tofield had shut down. “We did have a lumber yard here.

And it went for years and they were doing good, but the boys didn’t want anything to do with it, so he just sold it out and quit. We were talking to people and they said, ‘We could sure use a lumber yard.’ And we started and it was good for the first three, four years, but after that, with everything else, it just don’t pay.”

“If you get no support, I think there was a councillor who built a house here, he was one of those guys ‘you support your local town, you support your local business.’

He never bought a nail from us.”

Brown says there still is a need for a lumber yard in Tofield, but “there is no

Ken and Charlotte raised two children in Tofield, with Ken being born in Lindbrook and having lived in the area his whole life.

“I believe I can use my past experience and knowledge to help our Village be a financially

K-Days organizers have released this year’s ‘adventurous’ food lineup.

Step right up for a peanut butter and pickle dog. Pink lemonade ice cream. Extreme Zeus poutine. Pepperoni pizza grilled cheese. Just to name a few. Wash it all down with Spicy pickle lemonade or Mango coconut lucky ducky bucky which sounds cute but holds absolutely no interest to me.

This year the entire lineup, considered an experience unto itself, comes off as sort of tame.

creams and maybe Habanero Cherry Ice Cream Taco offer a chance of some spice but Oreo Fried Cheesecake and Corn Ribs sound like something Aunt Bea would cook up for Sunday supper at the church hall, followed by Grannie’s strawberry and rhubarb pie.

Carnival food is supposed to be fun and ‘a little odd’ but despite a claim that some of the offerings feel like they could have started out as a dare, Deep-fried Squid on a Stick is about as daring as it gets. The picture it paints in your mind stops way short of squeamish and I notice the menu stays away from anything grub or bug related (although I’ve heard fried grasshoppers are a crunchy delight that is pure protein).

But the idea behind the new and unusual foods is to attract people, not re-

pulse them, like the huge hissing and wiggling Madagascar cockroaches and other yucky stuff contestants of that TV show, Fear Factor, for example, had to eat. To be acceptable on the midway the roaches would have to be very dead, breaded and deep-fried (on a stick, optional), and served with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce. But I wouldn’t call eating one a treasured part of anyone’s annual K-Days experience, even if they tacked on the possibility of a big cash prize at the end.

I might try some Halo Halo, from the sweet side of the menu, and Quesabirria ramen from the savoury and wash it all down with a big cup of Masala shikanji, if only to find out what the heck they are. But I might find them wanting if nothing hisses at me…

JOHN’S RANT T-shirt fiasco wasn’t even news

BY JOHN MATHER A funny thing happened when I was waiting in line at the AMA offices the other day. A fellow a couple of spots ahead of me turned and looked at me and asked, “Is that a Doobie Brothers t-shirt you’re wearing?”

It was and he mentioned he had been talking to his wife the previous evening about the Doobie Brothers and thought it was a unique coincidence that the following day he should see a fellow wearing one from a concert in Calgary several years ago.

I don’t make a habit of reading t-shirts or their messages, but sometimes some do stand out.

I suppose people buy t-shirts for a variety of reasons. Some for comfort, some to remind them of places visited, others to make a statement, whether profound, political, depicting humour or just for the plain stupidity of the saying on the shirt.

Years ago when working at one of Edmonton’s major papers the directive came down to reading the t-shirts before shooting pictures of the person wearing it doing an activity.

If a person wore a t-shirt stating “F*CK all that’s missing is you!” then that person was

avoided like the plague.

Now, that’s fine and dandy for us moral, astute journalists of yesterday.

Today’s scribblers and photogs seem to thrive on finding people wearing stupid t-shirts, especially if they stand next to politicians they don’t like.

Case in point Danielle Smith and Pierre Poilievre.

The pair were flipping flapjacks at the Calgary Stampede while being photographed with all manner of bystanders. One such bystander wore a t-shirt proclaiming something like “Thank a straight person for your existence” followed by the line “straight pride.”

Obviously the wearer was making a statement on where he stood on gender issues.

But did Poilievre or Smith even notice the shirt this guy was wearing as photos were snapped away of them.

Maybe yes, maybe no, but it quickly evolved into a wedge issue.

Smith and Poilievre support straight rights, headlines proclaimed across social media.

Both politicians issued statements distancing themselves from the shirt wearer, indentified as one Eric Green.

There were no pictures or mentions if this same fellow posed with Prime Minister Trudeau while at the same Stampede.

Should Smith and Poilievre know better? Maybe, but then again were they even paying attention to some bystander posing next to them?

Would it have been news if the

t-shirt wearer had a gay pride shirt on, or a Che Guevara shirt, or a Black Lives Matter t-shirt.

Probably not because those statements seem to fit in more with the mainstream media’s agenda these days.

There have been photos of NDP members next to people wearing statement t-shirts with nary a peep from the media.

No this was a case of mainstream media and the woke left making hay out of nothing.

And people wonder why there is no trust for what they produce anymore?

High praise for Niko’s team after Mundare dancers capture world gold

BY JANA SEMENIUK Three young dancers from Mundare captured gold medals at the World Dance Cup in Whistler B.C. earlier this month.

Matthew Kit, 14, his sister Brynn, 12, along with dance partner Ruth Derow, 12, performed the winning 50s rock and roll medley tap dance number choreographed by Niko’s Dance Team instructor Quincy Pipella.

Matthew and Brynn’s mother, Shauna Kit, said the group has worked hard over the past year with Matthew winning three dance scholarships in addition to winning gold at several competitions with his sister and Derow. Kit said that one competition in Fort Saskatchewan was the team’s ticket into the World Cup. “They did this number at the (Sundance) competitions in Fort

Saskatchewan, (and) the adjudicator there was able to give a ticket. She was able to choose the performance she was moved by and she gave (them) this ticket straight to the World Dance Cup that would be held in Whistler this July,” she said. “That was a very special thing.”

The World Dance Cup, first held in Vancouver B.C. in 2008, attracts dancers from all around the world with competitions in each age group and dance category.

Dancers can only participate by invitation with seven age categories from six and under to over 30.

Kit said Matthew has been dancing since the age of seven while Brynn and Ruth have been dancing since they were five.

“Matthew has a real passion for dance. He is also a competitive hip

hop dancer in Edmonton (and) does his technical dances, ballet, tap, Jazz, and hip hop out of Niko’s (Dance Team), and then he is also part of Mantra Movement, which is a competitive Hip Hop studio that he also (dances with),” she said.

Kit said she homeschools her two children which allows them the freedom to travel and devote time for their passion.

“We homeschool with Vista Virtual. (I) love their program and it enables us to do this kind of stuff.

(It’s with) Pembina Hills school division (and) it's full Alberta curriculum.

All the material is sent (and) laid out, you just have to follow it,” she said. “Homeschooling allows us that freedom.”

taking turns carpooling their children to Ryley for dance classes at Niko’s Dance Team, just over 30 kilometers away.

“As a community we make this work,” said Kit, adding they have been attending Niko’s for the past six years. “(Niko’s Dance Team) often gets overlooked because it's small town, but it isn't every day that local kids are getting invited to do stuff like (World Dance Cup) and that's 100 percent from their training and their teachers and their mentorship.”

Niko’s recently celebrated their 20th anniversary this year.

Meanwhile, Matthew will also be travelling to New York next week with his mother to attend a week-long training camp.

Local Highland dancer attends Championship Series in Halifax

BY KARI JANZEN Kate Priestley, a local Highland dancer from Tofield, was in Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 26 for the 47th annual ScotDance Canada Championship Series (SDCCS).

Priestley began participating in Highland dance at the age of three in 2010.

“My aunt did Highland dance and when I was younger, my parents saw I had a ton of energy. I was hopping around the house and they knew that my aunt did Highland dance. So they put me in it and it was good. Got all my energy out,” Priestly said.

“It's very intense compared to other dancing, like tap, jazz, ballet. It's very competitive. So in ballet and stuff, there's a lot of ‘everyone gets a medal.’ In a Highland, you go to a competition and not everyone gets a medal, it's just what the judges see. It's a lot of traditional stuff. So you wear kilts that are made

of wool, and if it's an outdoor competition, it gets pretty warm.”

Because there are so many participants in the championship series, everyone is split into age groups and levels.

“I’m in premier, which is the top level there.

There's primary, which is younger kids, beginner, novice, intermediate, and then premier. And so it's a huge competition. It's called Canadians; it's hosted by Canada. And people from all over Canada and all over the world go and there's different age groups because it's so big,” Priestley explained.

Although Priestley did not win any awards in Halifax, she says it is good either way, and she always has fun and enjoys meeting new people.

“Honestly, it's just, it's good for me to get all the energy out. It's like any sport, really. You do it for the energetic part. And then it's also good to kind of be humbled by the fact

that you don't always win. I go to competitions.

I don't win sometimes. It just depends. So you get humbled by that fact a little bit.

“But it was really fun. I met a lot of people.”

Train hits pickup truck west of Tofield, driver miraculously in stable condition

Strathcona County, Alta. – On July 13, 2023 at approximately 07:11 p.m., Strathcona County RCMP were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle versus train on township road 514 and range road 233 in Strathcona County, Alta.

Upon arrival, the driver of the white truck that was involved in the collision, was already taken to University hospital, and he was reported to be in stable condition.

The male driver was the lone occupant and was driving Westbound on township road 514, and the train was travelling southbound.

The train ended up hitting the passenger side of the vehicle, which pushed the truck off the tracks into the near ditch.

Damages to CN property look to be extensive, but the dollar amount is unknown.

CN police and other

CN personal were on scene as well.

RCMP remained on scene for several hours while the debris was

cleaned up.

RCMP continue to investigate and charges are pending against a 39 year old male from Beaumont.

The 24th Annual Kinsella Graveldome Bullarama bucked out of the chutes on the evening of Wednesday, July 12. The event started off with a delay as the required ambulance team were called out for an emergency, but once they rolled back onto the grounds, riders and bulls were raring to go.

The event is put on by the Kinsella Rec and Ag Society, and each year they make sure it is bigger and better and never disappoints.

The crowd packed the stands and beer gardens at the start of the Bullarama, not an empty space to be found, and excited cheers as the first bull rocketed out of the chute.

The evening had 30 bull riders on the sheet, with each getting a shot to score some points and make it into the top 10 for round two and a chance at the buckle. The event is sanctioned by the Professional Bull Riders of Canada (PBR), with some of the top riders and bulls making an appearance.

When the 10 finalists were decided, round two began with none of the riders making it through the full 8 seconds, thanks to some ruthless bulls.

Winners were decided from scores during the first round. First place went to rider Griffin Smeltzer, who scored 86 points. Top rider in the PBR, Nick Tetz, tied for second with rider Callum Miller, both scoring a cool 84 points.

National Drowning Prevention Week declared Patricia Harcourt Many people love water activities during the summer months, but being safe and exercising caution is an important part of that fun.

For that reason, Beaver County has declared July 16-22 National Drowning Prevention Week.

At the regular council meeting in June, Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) made the motion to accept the proclamation of the resolution. It is to remain in effect for five years to coincide with the National Drowning Prevention Week that will be set every year.

The proclamation reads as follows: “Whereas, the mission of Lifesaving Society Canada is to prevent drowning throughout this great country, and even one drowning in Alberta is one too many; and “Whereas, most drownings are preventable in a Water Smart community, and only through Water Smart education and a healthy respect for the potential danger that any body of water may present can we genuinely enjoy the beauty and recreation opportunities offered by these bodies of water; and “Whereas, the Lifesaving Society urges Canadians and residents of Beaver County to supervise children who are in and around the water, to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages while participating in aquatic activities, and to always wear a life jacket when boating; and “Whereas the United Nations General Assembly passed the UN Resolution on Drowning Prevention (A/75/L.76) and named July 25 of each year as World Drowning Prevention Day; and “Whereas, Lifesaving Society Canada has declared July 16th-22, 2023 National Drowning Prevention Week to focus on the drowning problem and the hundreds of lives that could be saved this year.

“Therefore, be it be resolved that, Beaver County Council hereby proclaims July 16 to 22 National Drowning Prevention Week in Beaver County and commends its thoughtful recognition to all citizens of the municipality.”

Council heard in its report at the June 21 regular meeting that “Canada faces a major problem and a preventable one.”

There are over 450 people dying every year from drowning accidents. The United Nations General Assembly is so concerned over the issue around the world that it passed a resolution on drowning prevention, and named July 25 as World Drowning Prevention Day. The project in Canada is being spearheaded by the Life Saving Society, which is a national charitable organization.

Its goal is “to prevent drownings and reduce water related injury through training programs,” states the report to council. This is done through water smart public education, drowning research and aquatic safety standards.

The Lifesaving Society certifies Canada’s national lifeguards.

Every year during the summer the reports of drownings occur, including the province of Alberta, and the National Drowning Prevention Week is one of the society’s leading public education initiatives, with events taking place across the country to focus media and community attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention.

During this week, the society urges people to always supervise children in and around the water. Also, it is recommended that alcoholic beverages not be consumed while participating in water activities.

And always wear a life jacket when boating. The lifejacket in the boat will be of no help to you once you are in the water.

“If every Canadian followed these steps,” says the society, “we could greatly reduce Canada’s drowning rate.”

County reports train whistle cessation now complete for Bruce and Lindbrook Patricia Harcourt The seemingly long wait for some county residents living in the vicinity of two railway crossings has now ended.

The county has announced that train whistles blowing at all hours of the day and night is now ended for these locations.

The county made the announcement on Monday that the train whistle cessation process has now been completed at both these locations, and the whistles will no longer be sounding through these crossings.

The announcement began with the following: “Do you live in Bruce or Lindbrook? Have things been a little quieter the last few days?”

The reason being that, “The process of ceasing the train whistles in these locations has now been completed.”

Residents may not get complete silence from the trains initially, however, as engineers complete their own training

process. “There may be a few exceptions as the train engineers adjust to the change, but from now on there will be significantly less whistling, if any at all,” promised the announcement.

However, as many welcome the news there was no doubt a feeling of nostalgia for some as the whistles stop.

“I have been hearing the sound of the train for 30 years,” wrote Hilda Erickson, on a county social media page.

“I am going to miss it. Just Another part of our local history gone. At least it wasn’t non-stop horns, ambulances, and sirens.”

There was an indication that the engineers are still learning not to hit their horns while passing through the Lindbrook crossing: “I believe I just heard two toots from the train,” wrote Erickson.

However, feelings are no doubt mixed as there are other residents within the county who will welcome the news that the whistles will stop.

Much needed rain helping crops - almost half in good to excellent condition Compiled by Patricia Harcourt Alberta Crop Report for the week of July 11 has offered some reassurance to producers concerned about moisture for their crops.

It is reported that “over the last 30 days, parts of the province have received much needed rains.” This includes the North East region of which Beaver County is a part and the region of Central Alberta, with rains of up to 175 mm.

The North West received from 125-300 mm, and parts of the Peace region with up to 200 mm of rain.

But the report cautions that parts of the areas of the North East, Central and Peace regions have “many areas (that) only received 0-50 mm of rain.” This also applies to the South region.

The good news for the Beaver County area and much of these parts of the province is that rain has come in the early part of this week; however, it won’t be recorded in the report until the next crop report is done.

The condition of the crops on

the podding is at 19 per cent.

“All crops are ahead of the five-year average as half complete head emergence and 75 per cent flowering average for the time of year,” stated the report.

In the province as a whole, spring wheat is rated the best with 46 per cent rated good to excellent, oats at 57 per cent, lentils at 50 per cent, potates at 93 per cent, and chickpeas at 54 per cent.

Durum wheat is the lowest rated crop at 34 per cent good to excellent, mustard at 27 per cent, and flax at 36 per cent.

And spraying for pests and disease has started in the North East, Central and North West regions.

Some relief for producers came in the form of scattered showers and thunderstorms across the province in the two weeks of late June and early July. This has helped with surface soil moisture conditions being rated at 45 per cent good to excellent. The result is more stability in this area since the

average is “well below the 5 and 10-year averages of 66 and 68 per cent,” with 45 per cent as of the July 11 report rated in good to excellent condition.

Again, the good news for this area of the province is that “growing condition ratings were the highest in the North East and the Peace where conditions were 59 and 58 per cent good to excellent, respectively.”

Conditions for the South were rated as the lowest at 35 per cent good to excellent, leaving 65 per cent fairing poor to fair.

In the North East, the crops are 13 per cent below the fiveyear average of crops rated in good to excellent condition, with the Central region at 39 per cent below the average.

As of mid-July, spring cereals are flowering across the province and 83 per cent of major broad leaf crops are flowering. Of that flowering, it was reported that 11 per cent are podding.

Podding is taking place in 710 per cent of these flowering crops. In the South, however,

last reporting.

As of mid-July the soil moisture in the province is rated as 14 per cent excellent (one per cent excessive), 31 per cent good, 33 per cent fair and 21 per cent poor.

Unfortunately, it is also being reported that “soil moisture reserves are experiencing once in three to five year lows to once in 50-year lows in select areas around the South, North East, and Peace Region.”

Tame hay conditions have improved since the second week of June from 31 per cent good to excellent to 35 per cent.

However, since the July 11 report, the tame hay conditions are rated at 27 per cent poor. 38 per cent fair, 29 per cent good, and six per cent excellent.

Also, 59 per cent of dryland first cut is completed, which is well ahead of the five year average of 38 per cent.

“Some producers are also putting annual crops into their grazing rotations due to lack of available feed,” said the report.

“Pasture conditions have been slightly decreasing since

the third week of June and currently only 33 per cent of the pastures in Alberta are rated as good to excellent.”

This puts the ratings at 31 per cent poor, 37 per cent fair, 29 per cent good, and 4 per cent excellent for pasture conditions.

In the North East, crop conditions are classified as “fairly stable since the last report and are currently rated 10 per cent poor, 31 per cent fair, 56 per cent good and three per cent excellent.

However, there has been “minimal rain” reported, which helped to increase soil moisture ratings since the last report.

Surface soil moisture is six per cent (subsurface 17) poor, 30 per cent (37) as fair, 52 per cent (40) as good, and 12 per cent (6) as excellent.

First cut dryland hay in the North East is averaging one ton per acre. “But recent rains give more confidence to a second cut,” says the report. “Currently, pasture is rated at 22 per cent poor (tame hay at 31), 30 per cent fair (3*), 47 per cent as good (26) and one per cent as excellent (4).

The soil stabilizing for the road base with soil cement is now complete. We will soon be starting the first layer of chip seal. There will be many loose rocks after the chip seal layer is applied. Speed limits will be reduced on these roads once opened until the project is complete.

During these construction phases, portions of the roads may be closed to allow crews to work safely. Please use alternate routes, and be cautious while driving through these zones (local traffic only).

Tofield Summer Program full of weekly events - says coordinator Makenna Moos

BY KARI JANZEN This year Tofield resident Makenna Moos is the Town of Tofield’s summer program coordinator.

She graduated from high school last year and has plans to attend post secondary education in the fall.

“I start a paramedical program in October,” Moos said.

As for Moos’ plan for the summer she said, “I want the kids to have fun mostly. I want them to like coming here and to make some new friends.

“It helps them to adjust to the school year, even coming in here. The kids are always like, ‘Oh my gosh, I know you from school.’ They're learning new things.

“We try everything once here and if they hate it, they don't have to do it again. If they love it, we embrace it. We do that kind of stuff, like, we've been making bracelets for three days because they just love it. They're obsessed with it.”

Last Tuesday, July 11 the kids went on a field trip to Telus World of Science in Edmonton.

“It was so awesome.

The kids had a great time.

Everyone was happy. We

actually go on a field trip (yesterday) as well. So they're very pumped about that.”

The program headed to the Aviation Museum in Edmonton and the Saltos Gymnastics Club in Sherwood Park on Tuesday July 18.

Moos’ has had years of caretaking experience for children. “I babysat for a long time and I've been around kids my whole life. I'm good with kids.

They're easy. They're super, super cute.”

Moos has helpers to assist with the daily pro-

gram for both the morning and afternoon programs.

On average, “for morning program, we only get about six or seven [kids].

Usually, for afternoon we range from anywhere from 20 to 35. So it's quite high in the afternoon.”

OBITUARIES Winder, Marian Blanche (nee Hardy) October 28, 1947 – July 8, 2023

Marian Winder, 75, passed away July 8. Marian will be greatly missed by her husband of 54 years, Glen, son Bradley (Jonathan), daughter Jody (Kevin), granddaughter Kaylee and special niece Angela.

Marian was born on October 28, 1947, in Tofield, AB to parents Jack and Inga Hardy. She was a little sister to Donald. Marian grew up in Tofield and spent her childhood riding horses, playing sports with the neighbourhood boys, and fishing and camping with her family.

After graduating high school in 1966, she attended NAIT, studying Medical Laboratory Technology. Glen and Marian were married on September 7, 1968. Marian worked at the U of A Hospital in the Hematology Department for eight years. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her early twenties and the disease impacted her activity level the remainder of her life.

Children, Bradley was welcomed into their world in 1973 and Jody in 1976. In 1978, the family moved out to a farm in the Hay Lakes area. There they built on to the existing farm infrastructure, bred purebred beef cattle and raised their family. Not only did Glen and Marian operate a farm, but they were also co-owners of an oilfield well servicing business.

Many of Marian’s happiest moments were with horses. She spent many hours at horse sales searching for that perfect horse. Marian and daughter, Jody were members of the Miquelon Lake Saddle Club and spent many summer weekends at gymkhana events.

Marian enjoyed playing slo-pitch, curling, golfing and was a sports fan.

Reading, puzzling, listening to music and shopping were some of Marian’s other enjoyments in life. She enjoyed attending farm auctions, was great at finding a bargain and was not afraid to barter on price.

Marian was honest and real, tough as nails, down to earth, very organized, had tremendous forethought, and a memory like an elephant. She was a great conversationalist, willing to talk to anybody and wanted to know more about them. Marian was very resourceful and a great planner.

Above all else, she was empathetic and generous. We will miss her sense of humour, verbal jabs and gentle nagging.

Battling and beating breast cancer in 2020, she was diagnosed with terminal peritoneal cancer in 2021, Marian fought fiercely to live, as long as she could, for her granddaughter who was the “light of her life”. Kaylee and her grandma had a special bond and Marian’s legacy will continue with Kaylee.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Camrose Home Care, St. Mary’s Hospital, and the Louise Jensen Centre.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 on August 26, 2023 at the Hay Lakes Recreation Center.

Memorial donations can be made to the “Glen and Marian Winder Family Trust Fund” through the Battle River Community Foundation (a scholarship fund for students in Hay Lakes and Tofield who may not be able to fund a post-secondary education), the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society or the Alberta SPCA.

OBITUARIES Eva Helen Dykeman (nee Jansen) Eva Helen Dykeman (nee Jansen) of Tofield, AB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 4, 2023 at the age of 95 years.

She was born December 2, 1927, on a farm north of Port Reeve, Saskatchewan to William and Elva Jansen (nee Carruthers). After high school, Eva moved to Alberta and became a switchboard operator in Pincher Creek and Vulcan. When the RCAF base at Claresholm reopened, she took a position there. This where she met and married her husband, David Dykeman.

Eva took being a military wife in stride, moving when required while raising three children. She was an avid volunteer, working in thrift shops and with Girl Guides wherever they were posted. She enjoyed camping, bowling, gardening, especially her rose bushes, horses, hiking, being a mom and housewife and taking care of her family and friends. She took up curling and cross-country skiing after moving to Tofield and was known to throw a few darts at the legion.

She returned to work when they moved to Edmonton in the late 60’s, working the switchboard at the Charles Camsell Hospital until Dave retired and they moved to Tofield. Eva partnered with Dave to open and operate Dykeman’s Confectionery. They moved to various communities in Alberta for Dave’s work, retiring to Claresholm and then Sundre.

Eva returned to Tofield after Dave’s death, reuniting with old friends, and becoming an active community member.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and brothers.

Missing her are children Margaret (Paul), May (Don), Douglas (Corinne); granddaughters Jennifer, Robyn, Nicole, Elyshia, Samantha; great-grandchildren Brooke, Leigh and Charles and numerous relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the Tofield United Church with Rev. Adam Hall officiating.

Ryley preschool a go for the fall - now located in the school

BY JANA SEMENIUK After a one year shut down for the first time in their 23-year history, the Ryley Community Preschool are back up and running and preparing to re-open this Sept. at their new space in the Ryley School.

Preschool coordinator Larissa Holowachuk said keeping the preschool open is vital for the little community.

“For our program we involve the parents (so) it becomes more of a community,” she said.

“They're creating those ties especially for those who have just moved to the community. That's seems to be a big help.”

Holowachuk said in an interview earlier this year that the preschool’s agreement with the Good News Church in Ryley dissolved, leaving them with no place to operate out of and no choice but

to close down last year.

She said she was in talks with Battle River School Division since last fall and they finally came to an agreement later this year.

“They were in the middle of a school year and there's a lot of hoops that they go through. The process takes a while,” she said adding it took approximately eight months for an agreement.

Holowachuk said their new space is a bit smaller than their old one, but there are many benefits to having the preschool inside the school.

“They are giving us the use of the gym, the library, the homework room and learning commons so that’s really good,” she said, adding that preschool also benefits children by preparing them for school.

“Once (kids) have that little grounding in social

awareness and being with others (and learning) social skills and being able to sit and listen, it helps them as they enter into the school system.”

Holowachuk said there are already seven children enrolled for the preschool which is more than she usually sees at this time of the year.

“Normally, we don't do anything for registration until the week before because everybody's got summer plans,” she said.

“I’m cautiously optimistic.”

Holowachuk added that the program is usually kept to a maximum of 22 children ages two and a half to five years old.

Meanwhile, Holowachuk said the preschool will be holding an open house on Sept. 7 and classes will start on Sept.

REMEMBER WHEN July 15, 1997 A piece of local history and heritage went up in smoke on Saturday afternoon. The one-room school/community hall at Hastings Lake was burned as part of an exercise for the South Cooking Lake Volunteer fire department. The school opened in 1913.

The general consensus was that it closed in 1958. To help preserve it, local residents turned it into a community hall.

Holden Post Office raises over $700 for community youth organizations community.

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Holden Post Office held a successful 30-day raffle last month raising over $700 for the Canada Post Community Foundation. Post master Lynn Laskoski said all the money raised stays in the

grants.

“Anybody that works with children and youth can apply,” she said, adding this year’s raffle was kicked off with a barbeque in May that attracted at least 50 people.

“We charged $5 and had pulled chicken on a bun, potato salad, baked beans, strawberry shortcake and a drink,” she said, adding that their four staff members volunteered at the barbeque which was held at the post office.

The raffle had four main prizes which included a garden basket with a greenhouse gift certificate won by Joe Fornal, a summer fun basket and gift card won

by Amber Kostyk, and a BMX bike won by Marian Shihinski.
