Weekend of Chucks & Chariots Action in Viking

PATRICIA HARCOURT PHOTOS Patricia Harcourt Editor

For three days last weekend, the Cloverlodge Stampede Grounds in Viking were the centre of chariot and chuckwagon racing action. Stands were full for the exciting races put on by the Viking and District Agricultural Society and sanctioned by the Alberta Professional Chuckwagon and Chariot Association (APCCA). Smoke advisories from wildfires in other parts of the province didn’t appear to dampen any of the fun. Races were held at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Food with Flair and Noodle Pigs Mini-Donuts food trucks were set up onsite to provide food and refreshments. Saturday, the highly successful pork rib cook-off took place at the Multiplex to rave reviews. This was one of two new features introduced this year. The other was singer Darlene Thibault performing with her band on the Stampede grounds Sunday morning. At the end of the races on Saturday night, a family friendly dance was held in the out-

door rink with band The River Jacks providing the music. Beer gardens were held all three days, and every day racing fans saw eight chariot heats and seven chuckwagon heats. And there was plenty of action and excitement as the dust flew as drivers worked to steer their horses around the barrels as fast and cleanly as possible before tearing down the tracks. The ever popular Terry Cartier did the announcing for the races, throwing in anecdotes, jokes, and tidbits about drivers and the racing world. And in-between the chariots and chucks, during intermission the crowd was treated to seeing youngsters drive during the mini chuckwagon races. On Sunday, the races were held in conjunction with the Viking Historical Society’s Pancake Breakfast at the Legion and the society’s annual Show and Shine. Called a “Sunday Funday,” the collaboration worked well for both the historical society and the agricultural society by bringing more people into both the downtown area and stampede grounds events.
