Hangin’ On! another incredible year of Hardisty Rodeo

Rodeo fans packed the Hardisty Rodeo grounds over the weekend from Friday, July 15, to Sunday, July 17, to enjoy the ever-popular Hardisty Rodeo. The weekend started with the Street Fair, and new this year was the Show N' Shine. The streets of Hardisty were packed with excited families as they had opportunities to play in bouncy houses, try some vendor food, and even watch dressed up pets on stage for the pet show. Friday evening also saw the slack for the beginning of the rodeo weekend, with Saturday and Sunday staying bright, sunny, and hot for onlookers to watch the events. Each evening saw the Chuckwagon and Chariot Races, which are always a hit for the fans. The Rodeo ended with the loud and exciting Combine Crunch. Thanks to the hard working volunteers of the Hardisty Rodeo Association, the rodeo went off without a hitch and entertained hundreds of buckin' good fans. Amisk Astros knock out Braves, head into final

In last week’s Edition, I incorrectly reported that the Killam Braves had taken the first of three games in the semi finals against the Amisk Astros, which was incorrect.

Amisk took game one 19-3 Tuesday, July 12, in Amisk, then travelled to Killam on Thursday, July 14, where they won game two 14-2, ending the season for the Braves.

The Astros will now go on to play the winner of the Castor/Coronation semi finals to determine

the league champions for 2022.

Coronation swept Castor in two games, with the finals scheduled to start Wednesday, July 20, in Amisk. Game two is tentatively scheduled for Monday, July 25, in Coronation. Games start at 6:30 p.m.

The Powerline Baseball League season is winding down, with two more games before the start of playoffs. There, the Battle River Rivals have played 14 games with a 9-5 win/loss, behind Armena and Rosalind, who each have a 10-4 record.

UCP MLA Lovely to face a nomination Lougheed challenge from Smook in constituency Field House Moush John Staff Reporter

The United Conservative Party (UCP) race is on with only two candidates pursuing the party ticket for the Camrose constituency – incumbent MLA Jackie Lovely and local resident Kevin Smook, unlike the last election when five candidates were aspiring for a UCP nomination. The nominations closed last Tuesday, July 5.

An election will be held to choose the UCP candidate in Camrose constituency between Aug. 4 and 6. Only residents of the Camrose constituency who are current members of the UCP on or before July 14 are eligible to vote.

Speaking to the race coming down to just two well-known community members this time, MLA Jackie Lovely said, “Right now, I’m focused on talking to constituents and UCP members, as I work to secure my nomination in the Camrose riding for the 2023 election.

“Conservatives here know I have a rock-solid track record representing them, and with Alberta’s economy booming again, they want to see that momentum continue!”

Speaking to this, Tofield resident Kevin Smook said, “I’m not sure why only two of us decided to pursue the nomination but perhaps that's a result of me announcing my intentions so early.

“I’m encouraged by the number of people who’ve purchased or renewed their UCP membership and are willing to support me in my bid. I believe a great number of constituents want me to represent them as the UCP candidate in the next provincial election. We’ll find out for sure on Aug. 6!”

Smook further explained, “After hearing from a lot of people who feel I would do a good

job representing them provincially, I announced back in February that I intend to seek the nomination for the UCP Camrose constituency. To make it official, I filed my papers with the UCP in April. Only myself and current MLA Jackie Lovely have filed our papers prior to the deadline last Tuesday, making it a two-horse race.”

On Thursday, Aug. 4 between noon and 8 p.m. voting is on at the Sedgewick Community Hall. On Friday, Aug. 5, it is at the Daysland Community Centre between noon and 8 p.m. And on Saturday, Aug. 6, voting is between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Camrose Elks Hall.

What is social capital and why is it important As a community, Flagstaff County residents are often heard touting the quality-of-life in rural communities.

As a rule, our rural communities work together to achieve a lot. We function as a team with trust and our shared identity, shared values, shared goals, and mutual relationships allow us to do that.

It’s called social capital, and it benefits society as a whole through social relationships.

Social Capital is often used to describe civic and social responsibility felt and acted upon by an entire community.

The Institute for Social Capital describes the term as “a lubricant that facilitates getting things done.” What could be more Albertan than that?

Rural residents realized early on that our political system alone was not sufficient to build a true community. Social, family, church, and community groups came together to truly build the communities we know and enjoy today.

“Social capital refers to the internal social and cultural coherence of society. As such, social capital has been described as a glue.

“For groups and organizations social capital is vital to their efficiency and even existence. Social capital enables people to work together and facilitates cooperation and innovation.

“Any organization that doesn’t consider the importance of social capital is missing an opportunity for improvement, and risking inefficiencies and peril,” says the society.

Last weekend’s Hardisty Rodeo, parade, and Street Fair are perfect examples of when social capital works at its best.

When you think of the sheer scope of this event, and compare it to similar events held in larger centres, it is mind boggling that such a small community can hold such a wide variety of events, and purely on a volunteer basis.

When it comes to social capital in Flagstaff County, our cups are brimming over, and we are very lucky to have such a close-knit and positive community.

But it doesn’t happen without work and commitment, in Hardisty and in every one of our communities. We need to ensure we stay engaged and stay committed to ensure our quality of life remains at the highest level.

From what I’ve seen over the last few weeks, all around Flagstaff County, we understand the importance of social capital, and we act upon it every day. We may not use that term, but our communities certainly embody it in everything we achieve.

The ego-driven firearms policy Violent and serious crime has intensified since the Liberals took office in 2015. Driven by a failed, doublepronged approach of being soft-oncrime while simultaneously stomping on the rights of law-abiding Canadians, the Liberals have managed to jeopardize the safety of Canadians more than ever before.

In the past few weeks, reports of political interference in the senseless killing of 22 people by a deranged gunman have inundated headlines across the nation. The written notes of Nova Scotia RCMP Supt. Darren Campbell, which was released as part of the Mass Casualty Commission probe, shows that in the early stages of the investigation, RCMP Commissioner, Brenda Lucki, pressured the RCMP referencing promises she made to the Minister and the Prime Minister. It is alarming to see once again just how low the Liberals will sink to push their agenda.

Many of the firearms used by gangs to terrorize our communities and to conduct numerous types of illegal activity are smuggled from the United States or from other points of entry. Illegal gun trafficking is a major issue that is largely overlooked in the context of the Liberals’ public safety policy.

Preventing criminals from attaining weapons before they can commit violence should be the objective.

The circumstances surrounding Bill C-21 are further proof of the Liberals’ commitment to ignoring evidence on their political crusade to ban firearms.

We want to see action on violent crime by all sides, but the Liberals and their Public Safety Minister need to put egos and partisanship aside for the sake of Canadians.

ue to take firearms away from those who follow the law and are also amending the criminal code to reduce penalties for serious crimes; ironically, this includes crimes committed with firearms (in a Bill known as C-5). The Trudeau Government is pushing lawabiding firearm owners into a corner while allowing violent recidivists to ravage communities, profit from the misery of others, and victimize Canadians.

My caucus colleagues and I have, and will continue to support, an evidencebased firearms policy. It’s time that Canada had a government that respects those who follow the rules, puts real criminals behind bars, targets repeat offenders, gangs, organized crime, and those involved in the smuggling of illegal guns.

I will continue to fight against the Trudeau government’s vilification and attacks on law-abiding firearms owners, and their hug-a-thug way of governance that prioritizes offenders over victims.

Good folks who have lawfully acquired firearms and have PALs and RPALs are examples of good policy at work; while criminals who smuggle guns across the border for the purposes of illegal activity and commit serious crimes have made it loud and clear that they are not concerned with public safety.

It is an honour to serve as the Member of Parliament for Battle River-Crowfoot, and to stand up for the folks here at home and law-abiding firearms owners across Canada.

Reader looking for help identifying people from 1929 family photo Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Richard Weber recently sent in a photo he dubbed: “The Brown’s Lake Synchronized Swim Team of 1929.”

He says that’s what his family always called this photo, that featured his father, Frank Weber (second person in) and Ben Weber (man with paddle.)

He forwarded the photo to us in the hopes that one of our readers might be able to identify the other two people, which would be the first young boy, and the third young boy on the (sinking?) raft.

Weber says he was planning to post the photo at the Sedgewick Lake Park Campground this summer, but unfortunately, his trip was cancelled.

The Battle River Pipes & Drums will be competing for the first time ever next weekend on Saturday, July 23, in the Sherwood Park Highland Games.

They have never competed before and have been working extra hard the last few months to prepare a new competition medley just for this occasion.

They will be competing along some of the topgraded bands around and will be receiving critique from judges so that they can become better at their skills. And they will look sharp in their new formal uniforms. We wish them good luck!

The Toronto Dominion Summer Reading Club Story Walk will be available for families to take a nice leisurely walk along the Town of Sedgewick Main Street.

A Story Walk is a fun, socially-distanced activ-

ity that places a children’s book, page by page, on laminated poster boards along a path, or in this case, downtown Sedgewick.

The story this year is “I’m Scary” by Elise Gravel. The book will start at the Sedgewick Main Street Park and continue up the main street’s left side and then the right side. Enjoy this fun-filled family activity.

Also, our Sedgewick Library will be hosting the Summer Reading Club during the month of August each Thursday.

Well hello folks, now wasn't that a party?

Hardisty enjoyed a fabulous weekend of street fair fun and rodeo celebrations.

The rodeo and all the events never cease to amaze me and all the dedicated volunteers. You are the best.

Our street fair was a resounding success, especially with the addition of the “Auto Show and Shine.” The display of vintage vehicles was memorable to many of us slightly older adults.

Bet you can remember the car or truck that you had your first date in, your first real kiss, or maybe when your honey proposed.

Were you laying on a blanket in the back of the half-ton, where candles were lit, his boom box or loud stereo was blasting love songs and the stars were sparkling in the sky?

Of course, you said "Yes!" All this love talk made me think of the DeKock/Green wedding.

There have been many weddings, but a unique one was the recent wedding of Amy DeKock and Jack Green. These two lovebirds met in Edmon-

ton and have been together for seven-and-ahalf years. Jack is originally from England.

So where did he propose? Well this man took his lady to Austin, which is the live music capital of the world. He proposed to Amy on the Austin legislature grounds, while no one was around. This man has imagination.

Of course before he asked Amy, he asked permission from her Mom, Brenda and the grandparents for her hand in marriage.

The wedding, like I mentioned last week, was held at the family farm.

There were seven groomsmen, six bridesmaids, and a sweet little flower girl.

Their meal was very interesting and held at the town hall. A Texas style barbeque with smoked brisket and ham, barbequed beans, and corn bread. Darn, I forgot to ask what they had for dessert... Oh well, I am sure it was yummy, too.

The tables that the guests sat at were the talk of the town. Each table centre was a unique decor that had special meaning to the couple. The work that went into this decor is amazing. I will just list it.

The head table was themed after the Harry Potter book series, then the rest of the tables were: Rugby, Lord of the Rings,

Thank goodness her mom is an artist, so I imagine those artistic genes filtered down into Amy, her sister Desiree, and brother Devin. Other friends also helped create these designs. The beautiful floral arrangements were designed by Hailey Mazure.

Amy said that since her dad was in heaven, she could not have the special father and daughter dance.

She requested her guests join her on the dance floor and as a tribute to her dad, they were asked to dance to “Ballroom Blitz” and do the air guitar movements, which her dad loved to do.

When she told me that I got weepy. This is just so touching.

The bride also changed her formal bridal gown to an evening vintage dance dress. A ballerina-shaped white dress with lots of tulle. I believe I saw that she snuck in some running shoe type footwear in the one picture I saw.

Wow... What a party, eh?

Flagstaff County welcomes new Agricultural Fieldman Nick Dunn Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Nick Dunn’s position of Agricultural Fieldman will be ratified by Flagstaff County Council during the regular meeting Wednesday, July 18.

Dunn has been working as Assistant Fieldman since last August, under former Ag. Fieldman Harry Brooke, before applying for the position when Brooke retired earlier this year.

Dunn and his family moved from Olds to Killam in 2006, and he’s been here since.

He’s also worked at Coldstream Farms near Killam for many years, with Bob George. Dunn says he really fell in love with agriculture when he started working with George.

After graduating High School, Dunn enrolled at Olds College for his Agri-Management diploma, and worked with Nutrien Ag Solutions for about five years afterwards.

He felt like he was ready for a change when he took the Assistant Ag. Fieldman position at Flagstaff County, but soon realized, “There was lots more for me to learn.” He says he didn’t know the complete scope of the role of Ag. Fieldman until he started, but says working with Brooke was a terrific experience, where he really learned a lot about the role that Ag. Fieldmen play. “Harry was a true mentor to me.

“The Ag. Fieldman position is unique to Alberta,” Dunn says. “No other province even has Ag. Fieldman.”

Dunn jumped at the opportunity to apply for the job, he says, “because I’m also here to stay, and I think the county found that was one of the strengths that I’ll bring to the job.”

He loves the work, because he says, “This job gives me the opportunity to

work directly with more farmers and producers in the Flagstaff County region.”

The Ag. Fieldman answers directly to the Agricultural Service Board, which Dunn says is made up of three elected Flagstaff County councillors and four members at large, producers and farmers living and working in the region. He thinks it’s important to have a good mix of elected officials and members at large.

“It is a chance to give Flagstaff County ratepayers a say into how more things are managed.

“They are from a wide area of Flagstaff County, and really understand the challenges specific to our region.”

He says he’s looking forward to working closely with the board, hearing their ideas and having them bring local issues forward.

He says two of the strategic priorities the Ag. Service Board has identified are conservation and succession planning.

Dunn says, “We have a lot of generational farms in our area, and we want to give them the tools to keep going, and avoid being eaten up by larger corporations.

“Some of our farmers and producers have been on the land from the time it was first homesteaded. It’s an important part of our heritage here in Flagstaff County.”

He says the bottom line, and end goal is to leave the land in the same condition that we received it, and to provide local producers with the opportunity to succeed in their farming ventures.

He’s also presently working on the final touches for a new pollinator program being introduced in Flagstaff County, adding, “All of our programs are very beneficial. Like roadside mowing, and custom spraying. We have 2,700 miles of roadways in Flagstaff County, and this year, we’re probably looking at mowing them at least twice. That’s the distance be-

He says the weather has put some of his department’s projects behind, but says he welcomes the moisture. “Our moisture levels are presently rated above average, that’s the first time in 10 years we’ve seen that. We’ve needed this after the past few years of drought.”

Dunn says that the heavy rainfalls have him monitoring conditions, and says presently Flagstaff County is monitoring for Bertha Army worms at three locations, recording low infestations. They are also reporting results from Wheat Midge traps, to Agriculture, Forestry and Rural

Economic Development that helps create a provincial snapshot of infestation. Upcoming will be a grasshopper survey and club root survey.

“We do over 200 surveys a year.”

Dunn says the Ag. Fieldman acts as local farmers’ and producers’ first contact in Flagstaff County. He adds, “I’m open to hearing about new programs they would like to see brought locally.”

Dunn says the Flagstaff County Ag Department also cares for the county’s four campgrounds, from mowing, to maintenance, responsible for fire pits and picnic tables. He says he introduced a new payment method this year, where campers are required to display a receipt at their campsites.

“Our biggest issue with the campgrounds is that people stay but don’t pay.” Dunn says his workers now make routine checks, and that the new payment method has been working well. “Our Peace Officer also assists with this.”

Dunn is looking forward to strengthening extension opportunities now that we are post-COVID, and bringing back inperson learning opportunities in Flagstaff County.

Tow operators happy with decision to allow blue lights Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Province of Alberta recently announced the start of a one-year pilot project that will allow tow operators to use flashing blue lights when they are working on Alberta highways. The blue lights must be used in conjuction with the orange lights presently in use.

The change came about through Leduc-Beaumont MLA Brad Rutherford’s Private Members Bill 207. He says, “I am extremely pleased to see that Minister Sawhney is acting on the concerns raised from the tow truck industry on the importance of blue lights.

“This pilot project will be critical to enhancing roadside safety for not only tow truck operators but the Albertans they are helping.”

Sawhney, former Minister of Transportation, says, “Too many tow truck drivers are involved in collisions or dangerous situations because motorists have difficulty seeing them while they’re working.”

Flagstaff area tow operators Dallas Oberg and Dan McRae both agree that the blue lights will help with visibility.

Unfortunately, neither of them think this is a permanent solution.

McRae, of BeDevil Enterprises in Killam, says that he installed blue flashing lights on his tow vehicles even before the pilot project started. He says, “The blue lights are a good idea, and they may help for a while.”

Oberg, who owns Killam Towing, says from his Forestburg location, “They will be fantastic for people like you and me, who already obey the law.

But after six months or so, I think they’ll start to be less effective.”

Oberg says the blue lights offer much better visibility, especially at night.

McRae agrees. He hasn’t used his blue lights frequently since installing them, but saves them for night time use. Now, of course, he can use them all the time, at least for the next year.

Both tow operators say that drivers routinely blow past them doing well over 100 km/hr, rarely slowing down to the mandatory 60 km/hr.

According to the Alberta Driver’s Handbook, tow operators working at the side of the road with flashing lights should be given the same rights as other first responders, like police, EMT, and fire services. “Motorists must reduce speed to 60 km/hr or the posted speed, whichever is lower, when passing emergency vehicles or tow trucks that are stopped with their lights flashing. This law applies to the lane(s) immediately next to the stopped vehicles.”

The Province says these changes are in addition to new rules to protect highway workers under the Traffic Safety Amendment Act.

Starting spring 2023, all motorists travelling in the same direction on multi-lane highways will need to slow down to at least 60 km/h and allow one lane of space, where possible, when passing stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks and roadside workers’ vehicles when their lights are flashing.

Motorists travelling in both directions on single-lane highways will be required to slow down when passing roadside vehicles and workers.

Speed fines are doubled when workers or emergency responders are present at the side of the roadway, with fines ranging from $163 to $991, and requiring a mandatory court appearance when over by 51km. That means passing a tow truck doing 111 km/hr puts you in danger of serious fines or suspensions.

McRae says, “People are blowing past my drivers at 100 km/hr-plus.

Even big trucks, with professional drivers, don’t bother slowing down.”

“Do I think it’s going to save lives?

No,” says Oberg. He says he thinks about 80 per cent of the people who pass him at the side of the road are speeding, “They may not be going 100 km/hr, but they are sure not going 60 km/hr. And about 20 per cent of them are going over 100 km/hr.”

Both operators described incidents that happened within the past two weeks where they or their operators were in danger.

Oberg described a scene just west of Forestburg where drivers continually blew past him as he was working road-

side on a vehicle that happened just last week.

McRae says he was at a scene recently where he was working at the side of the road when a driver passed him without slowing or moving over at all, despite the fact that there was no other traffic present, passing the workers and tow truck with just a couple of feet of separation.

“There I was standing between my truck and the vehicle I was towing.

“Some nights you wonder why you’re doing this.”

McRae recalls another incident where he stopped at the side of the road for a tow job and put pylons out around his vehicle, giving himself about a five foot berth between his truck and oncoming traffic.

He walked around the vehicle to check something, and then walked back, only to find a passing vehicle had just hit two of the pylons.

“One blew about 120 feet into the air and landed in the ditch; one was stuck under the person’s vehicle. They slowed for a minute, then drove off like that.

“Drivers just don’t care.”

Both operators say when RCMP leave an active accident scene, some drivers stop obeying the law. They think the blue lights may give those drivers pause, at least for a while.

McRae thinks there are drivers out on the highways today who simply aren’t aware of the rules of the road. He says he’s routinely passed on double solid lines, going uphill, and even through

intersections. “I was recently passed on the wrong side of the road.

“You can kill a family doing these types of things.”

He wonders, “Would those drivers be mad if it was their kid I blew by at 120 km/hr from two feet away?”

Both Killam Towing and BeDevil do most of their work locally, and due to lower traffic counts, feel it’s safer than on major highways such as the QEII. McRae says, “I like to keep my guys around home where it’s a little safer for them.

“My people are more important to me than taking a job that puts them at risk.”

Oberg says he’s worked around the province, and he’s had some close calls.

He says, “One of my operators had a vehicle go by so closely that its mirror brushed him on the way by.”

When tow operators throughout the province were advocating for the blue lights, AMA said that tow operators reported 36 close calls in the previous year alone.

Oberg says, “It’s likely 100 times that, I don’t always report them, because then it’s my word against theirs.”

McRae takes a different tack, he records licence numbers and routinely reports speeding drivers to RCMP. Both operators say when they are working at the side of the road they load up the vehicle as fast as they can, and drive to a safer location to secure it.

Oberg says, “Personally, I keep my head up and pay attention. I always try to work from the ditch side of the vehicle wherever possible.”

He says people aren’t all bad. He’s had oncoming traffic help him, especially on hills or blind corners by putting on their flashing lights.

Both Oberg and McRae hope that the blue lights will help increase safety for tow operators, both by increasing visibility, and by helping to educate drivers about the laws currently in place.

The Province says it is also contemplating allowing snowplow operators to use blue flashing lights as early as this fall.

U of C Dean and Veterinary admissions visit Augustana Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely recently facilitated a meeting between the University of Calgary and University of Alberta Augustana Campus members to further the conversation between the two schools with regards to expanding the Veterinary Medicine program, for rural students.

Lovely says, “On July 4 the Dean for the University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Weller, and Dr. Robert McCorkell,

who is responsible for admissions to the Veterinary program, visited Augustana campus for a meeting with Dean Tryphonopoulos, Assistant Dean, James Smith, Peter Berg, Chair of Science, Sheryl Gares, Associate Chair, Science, Ivana Schoepf, Assistant Professor, and Sandra Rein, Associate Dean, Research.

“The Augustana meeting is the next step following my motion calling on our Government to address the Veterinarian shortage.”

Lovely adds, “My vi-

sion is that the Camrose Constituency students and those in the surrounding areas attend Augustana for their science degree and then transfer to the U of C for the Veterinary program.

2nd COVID booster shot expanded Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

Two health-related decisions by the province this week will impact those wanting a second COVID19 booster or working for AHS. As of Wednesday, July 20 people over the age of 18 will be eligible to get their second booster against the virus.

The move is being made in light of a new Omicron BA.5 variant that is increasing transmission this summer, and is expected to continue throughout the fall and winter months.

Other respiratory illnesses like influenza are also expected to continue to rise.

The increased availability expands booster choices with Omicron BA.5 the dominant strain of the virus currently circu-

lating in the population.

People with concerns over their personal risk factors can now get their second booster as long as there is a five month gap between the first and second booster.

Previously, only persons aged 70 and over were eligible. The province says the second dose would be of most benefit to those at high risk of severe outcomes if they get the virus.

Health Minister Jason Copping said that “vaccines remain critical to lowering your risk of severe outcomes and protecting our health care system.”

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, said: “We know that new variants of the virus will continue to emerge and the best form of defence continues to be

prevention.”

Some Albertans are choosing to wait until a form of booster targeting the new variants is made available by the vaccine manufacturers, possibly sometime this fall.

But Copping and Hinshaw are urging people to go for their first booster if they haven’t done so already, and to get the second booster if they have health complications.

Ironically however, Alberta Health Services has removed the condition that their employees must be immunized against the COVID-19 virus to work for them, basing this on the belief that the current vaccines are no longer as effective as they once were.

The change is effective as of Monday, July 18, and will include new hires and placements.

There was quite a lightning show on Saturday night, lots of thunder and hail in the town of Alliance. It is reported that some golf ball-sized hail did damage on cars, trees, and gardens.

There wasn’t a lot of rain out here on the farm, just five miles from town. I didn't get any hail and very little rain.

Mary Wold stopped in to visit Art and Tina Ratcliffe.

Mary's been in the Health Care Centre at Killam for several weeks now.

Her son Edward is home from Arizona for a visit and he was squiring his mother around.

It's here now. This the week of the big rummage sale at the United Church.

Art and Tina Radcliffe have sold their home. The possession date for the new owners will be Thursday, Aug. 18, so it's going to be a quick move for Art and Tina.

OBITUARIES Jacob (Jake) Theodore Lazarick

It is with incredible sadness that the family of Jacob Theodore Lazarick announce his sudden passing on July 14, 2022.

Jake came into this world in a hurry on July 11, 2006, ready to light the world on fire.

The sparkle in his eyes let everyone know that he was here to shake things up right from the very be-

ginning.

Jake was born to Joe and Marcy Lazarick and was little brother to Ethan and big brother to Lincoln.

Family was so important to Jake and he loved getting together with extended family for any excuse we could come up with. He would rotate steadily between bugging the adults in the kitchen, playing mini sticks with all the boys and patiently playing a quiet game with the younger kids.

His dry sense of humor and quick wit were a match for any one of us and he loved to be in the center of things.

In his short 16 years he played every sport he possibly could. He left a last-

ing impression on his teammates in soccer, baseball, swim club, hockey, lacrosse, and every school sport he could fit in.

The last couple of years he developed a great passion for golf and was so excited to be spending his mornings this summer working the early shift at the golf course followed by a round or 2 of golf, either with his friends or by himself, it didn’t matter.

School was a social experience for Jake. He wasn’t there to learn, although he could if he put some effort into it. He was there to make memories and have fun. Thankfully, that fun only led to a call from the principal twice.

He was friends with

everyone he met and left a lasting impression on them all. He was rarely the leader of the pack, he was just content to be included.

COVID quarantining was especially challenging for Jake because he lost sports and his face-to-face connection with all of his friends. Returning to hockey and school was a blessing for us all!

Leaving to mourn his passing are his mom, Marcy and dad, Joe (Sam), and brothers Ethan and Lincoln. His Grandma Mel (Tom), Papa Bud (Tammy), Uncles Scott, Tanner, Izaya, Jordon (Tessa), and Aunties Rae (Skyler) and Drew (Raichle) and cousins Bentley, Jayce, and Brixton. Archie McNabb of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 years old on Sunday, June 26, 2022, in Red Deer Hospital.

Archie was born in Forestburg, Alberta, on May 30, 1933.

He was one of ten children born to Tom and Mabel McNabb.

On December 10, 1954 he married Elaine Olstad. He made his living as a Master Electrician in and around the area of Forestburg.

Archie is survived by his wife, Elaine; his children, Rick McNabb (Janet) of Kamloops, Tracey McNabb of Edmonton and Dean McNabb (Michelle) of Williams Lake; his five

grandchildren, Christopher McNabb, Angela Wildeboer (Cory), Dylan Gilbert (Alyssa), Morgan Gilbert (Kyle) and Hailey McNabb; and two great grandchildren, Alex and Xavier Wildeboer.

Even cattle were looking for ways to beat the heat

With temperatures nearly hitting the 30 degree mark later last week and into the weekend, everyone was looking for ways to cool off, even our bovine friends.

Sunday ushered in more moderate temperatures, but Environment Canada predicts a return to highs of 26 and 27 degrees starting this Thursday and going into next week for the region.

Historically, the record high temper-

ature for July 20 for the Camrose area was 32.8 degrees, in 1956, with the record low for this date at 3.9 degrees in 1947.

The region received record rainfall in 1982 with 25 mm.

Average highs for this date are 22.4 degrees, with lows of 10.9 degrees.

The Weather Network predicts a 20 to 60 per cent chance of precipitation for areas of Flagstaff County early next week.

And as it turns out, dipping your feet in cold water is an excellent way to cool off. Smart!

Sedgewick Lake Campground visitors treated to lake humour

The Sedgewick Lake Park Campground greeted visitors with a little lake humour with this sign. Weʼre pretty sure this falls under the category of ʻDad jokes.ʼ You canʼt help but smile. Letʼs hope whoever is responsible has more of the same up their sleeves this summer, well worth a visit, or even a drive-by.

Faith: Thinking about Luther As I sit at my desk this day, I am thinking about Martin Luther after reading a small book on his essential teachings entitled: “On Christian Liberty.”

It was almost 505 years ago, on Oct. 31, 1517, that Luther nailed his 95 theses (discussion points) to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany.

With that one seminal act of protest, Martin Luther, an Augustinian monk and doctor of Theology began a cascade of events that would shake the church to its foundations and eventually lead to the Protestant Reformation, resulting in the many Christian denominations we see today.

Martin Luther's core belief was founded on Paul's Epistle to the Romans 1:17 (KJV) where he read, "The just will live by faith."

After much contemplation on this reading, Luther reasoned that the key to spiritual salvation was not to fear God or to suffer enslavement by religious dogma, but to believe that faith alone in Jesus and his teachings would bring salvation.

For his actions of the day, Luther was excommunicated from the church by Pope Leo X. Undaunted, Luther set himself to translating the Bible from Latin to the common people's German language so that eventually every person could read and interpret scripture for themselves.

Martin Luther’s earnest desire was to bring the people closer to their God through translation of the Bible. His accomplishments forever changed the church and the relationship between church leaders and their followers.

Here's to you Martin Luther, a man of action and of reform.
