Opinion From Where I Sit: Not Sure
By Hazel Anaka So far this has been a summer like no other. Combining efforts continued into July until finally the white flag of surrender was raised. That led to the next step, burning the fields of swaths.
In itself, that is not an easy prospect. There are many conditions to be met in order to get a fire permit. Disk a fireguard around the perimeter, show proof of fire insurance, check the wind speed at Elk Island Park. Then, and only then call your intentions in before striking the match. Watch helplessly as your hard work and cash inputs go up in black, black smoke. Then turn what should have been another cash crop into summer fallow as you work the volunteer crop, the weeds, and the ashy residue under, time and time again. We also took the bold
(crazy) step of spraying Round Up on several flowerbeds. The plan being to (eventually) reduce the work required maintaining these areas of specimen trees, shrubs, and perennials. What seemed like a good idea thirty years ago is no longer something we want to do. Right now, we’re at the unsightly stage. Dead and dying foliage that, I suppose has to be removed. Once the area is cleared, some of it will go back to grass to make the mowing easier around all these obstacles. What remains will get gravel mulch and large landscape boul-
ders. This is not work we relish doing especially when temperatures hit the high twenties. But the pain now will hopefully streamline future summers as this insistent source of guilt is reduced. Add work and social obligations into the mix and it’s another summer half gone without so much as a day spent lounging with a good book and a beverage. Or huddled around an evening fire pit. Or a day trip spent squinting out at a great blue lake expanse. Then throw in a viral thing that results in swollen glands; a con-
gested head; a voice made creaky and hoarse; and a general feeling of lethargy that makes the days seem longer and harder. It’s now past the one-week mark and yet it hangs on. At least sleep comes easily, thanks to the air conditioning we got a few years ago. Some family birthday parties ensure a few fun get-togethers between now and the end of August. An out-ofprovince wedding in late September has us wondering how to make that happen during harvest. Many Saturdays, by the power vested in me by the province of Alberta, I join happy couples in
marriage. On the festival side of things, the house and garage are starting to take on the warehouse look typical at this point as I begin organizing and assembling some of the things that make Babas and Borshch a well-oiled machine that continues to delight both new and return visitors. All this combines to remind me that life is lived moment by moment in a sloppy mix of good and bad, hard and easy, work and play. I’m not sure I’d change a thing even if I could, from where I sit.
National think tank to address rise of Islamophobia in Canada Dear Editor, Hate crimes against Muslims in Canada have increased by 60% from 2014 to 2015. This attitude was one of the leading factors that led to the death of six men and injured 19 others when Alexandre Bissonnette, opened fire in Quebec Masjid on January 30, 2017. The Canadian Community Engagement Study is being undertaken to understand the level of communication between Canadian Muslims and their fellow Canadians. The survey aims to
take a deeper look at how Canadians think and feel about Muslim Canadians. The survey also aims to understand the Muslim experience in Canada and their perceptions of how fellow Canadians perceive them. Think for Actions and Insights Matter, along with nine researchers, eleven advisors and nineteen students from eight different Canadian Universities have created a short five minutes’ survey. Lamont municipalities upgrading to LED lighting Michelle Pinon Editor
Bruderheim town council held a special meeting on W ednesday, July 19 to decide whether or not to pr oceed with the signing of a funding agreement for LED upgrades to its facilities. Chief Administrative Officer Patty Podoborozny stated that, “The special meeting was to address the funding approval we received from AUMA (Alberta Urban Municipalities Association) for LED upgrading our municipal buildings thr ough the TAME (Taking Action to Manage Energy) funding approval that was awarded last week. I needed a resolution from council to pr oceed with signing the funding agreement. Back in Febr uary the town hired GreenLeaf Electric to conduct an energy audit of its municipal buildings. Podoborozny went on to explain, “Through the audit we wer e able to determine where the largest energy savings would be by doing the LED upgrades. The town needed to complete the project within 90 days to receive funding. Council doesn’t meet again till mid-August so we called
the special meeting to allow time to complete the project.” The cost of the energy audit was $2,500 and funded through the town’s operations budget. Fortis is currently conducting an LED str eetlight upgrade in Bruderheim this week. Podoborozny said that was being done at no cost to our community . “We are extremely excited about this as it aligns with our strategic goals to reduce our carbon emissions as a community. “About 75 per cent of municipal buildings will be converted to LED at a cost of appr oximately $90,000. About $50,000 will be funded fr om the town’s operating reserve. The r emaining will be funded thr ough the TAME funding agreement. It will take approximately 2.3 years to recoup those costs as our energy and maintenance savings will be approximately $21,700 in energy savings to other
important projects going forward.” In the coming weeks the town will be seeking three quotes for the municipal LED upgrades with completion tar getted for the end of September. She went on to say , “Switching to a LED lighting is happening fast not only because of the savings that can be made and the envir onmental benefits but because there are now documented improvements on human wellbeing as a r esult of this type of lighting. LED’s are ultra efficient, having an extended working life, significantly r educe CO2 emissions, even compared to compact fluorescent bulbs, slash power bills and minimize replacement (i.e. maintenance costs). Council and staf f are very excited about these two LED upgrade pr ojects in our community this summer. We continually strive to incr ease
service levels with minimum impact to our current tax levies. The upgrades also align with our strategic envir onmental initiatives to sustain our community for generations to come.” Town of Lamont Chief Administrative Officer Sandi Maschmeyer said LED upgrades will be taking place this week in Lamont. Natasha Russell a media liason with with Fortis Alberta said the Town of Lamont will have approximately 230 lights converted, the Town of Bruderheim will
have 208 lights converted, and the V illage of Chipman will have 27 lights converted, and
Lamont County will have approximately five lights converted.

Bruderheim ready to roll out welcome mat for CIB judges Michelle Pinon Editor
Communities in Bloom (CIB), isn’t all about flowers, and Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch has been fortunate enough to see how the seeds of positivity have impacted residents, businesses and community based organizations in town in recent years. On July 26, 27 and 28 the CIB judges will be touring the community to get a first hand look at the most recent beautification efforts of volunteers. “I have had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer with CIB in Bruderheim several times. It always feels great to be able to help beautify our town,” stated Hauch. “Our town has been extremely fortunate to receive valuable feedback every year from the CIB judges on many aspects of our community, and for me personally, it is very gratifying when our town is able to follow up on this feedback to make our town special. It is not all about flowers.” He went on to say, “CIB does make a difference. Every year we see more folks taking the time to beautify their part of town, making us all proud to call this
great little town our home…A large part of this growing positivity stems from the positive feedback our CIB team, led by Sherry Cote, enshrines into the program to encourage people to continue their efforts to beautify our town.” Sherry Cote says CIB is about a whole community of people working together to celebrate the strengths and challenges, and determining solutions to make the community a “little piece of awesome” that would make you want to reside or visit. “If everyone understood the components of CIB, they would understand that it is not the flowers or the small committee that champions CIB; it is what the whole community is doing to make it a great place to live.” She also wants to make it clear that CIB members consists of the whole community; volunteers, residents and members of the business community. Some of the projects CIB volunteers have undertaken this year include: creation and instillation of the Canada 150 design on the berm adjacent to Highway 45, the Canada 150 Bruderheim Meteorite Banners on Queen Street, Community Gardens in
support of the Lamont County Food Bank, and the planting of more than 700 native and edible plants on the Bruderheim Agricultural Grounds and Campground. CIB also partnered with businesses along Queen Street to create outdoor floral displays. Cote said that was a fun project, and included members of Bruderheim town council. This year the Town of Bruderheim is participating in the
national edition of CIB in the up to 4,500 population category, along with Hanna, AB, Valhalla Centre, AB, Maple Creek, SK, MerrickvilleWolford, ON, and Windsor, NS. The national and international results of this year’s competition will be announced in OttawaGatineau, from Sept. 1316 during the symposium and awards ceremonies with the theme of “Communities and Green Spaces,

After auctioning off the mini chuckwagons Friday evening it was time to race them Saturday afternoon in front of an appreciative audience.
The tie down roping event proved to be challeging, but rewarding for several rodeo contestants like this one during the Friday night rodeo performance.
This saddle bronc rider had some good air time with his Friday night draw.
This little tyke had a blast during the Little Sizzlers Kids Rodeo which consisted of mutton bustin, stick horse racing and stationary steer roping events. Rodeo Clown Blayne Wendland had several explosive moves and plenty of jokes and antics to keep rodeo fans entertained for two performances.
The weather couldnʼt have been better for the 30th annual Summer Sizzler Rodeo July 21 and 22 near Lamont. Around 370 people took in Friday nightʼs performance, with numbers upwards of 800 on Saturday to enjoy the rodeo. Rodeo committee member Rebecca Joseph said the event was a great success and could not thank the volunteers, spectators and sponsors enough for making it such a success. “Our volunteers stepped up to the plate hugely, and we are so thankful for the other community groups that sent volunteers, including the the Lamont Fish and Game Association and the Lamont Light Up and Perogy Festival Committee.” She was pleased to report there were 50 contestants for the Little Sizzlers Kids Rodeo. As ever, the Combine Crunch was extremely popular. This year they introduced combine barrel racing, and rookie Trent Kucy is believed to have set the world record for the longest time in that event; but he proved that slow and steady does have its advantages, and took home first place in the Combine Crunch sponsored by Webbʼs Machinery on Saturday evening. Joseph went on to say, “Thank you to everyone who supported us. We are thankful to have such a great community to be involved in.”
Volunteers with the Lamont Fish & Game Association did some hands on bird house building during the two day event with many appreciative youngsters.
The ladies, junior and pee wee barrel racers, (over 30 contestants in total), used their skills, tenacity, and speed to lay down excellent times Friday evening.
The bucking horses were in fine form Friday evening, and had this cowboy diving into the dirt. It was a not so gentle reminder of how rugged the sport is.

Visitor centre museum proposal being mulled over by Lamont council Michelle Pinon Editor
A museum-visitor centre could be in the offing if the Town of Lamont is interested in making this prospective initiative a reality. But before any decisions are made, members of town council said during the July 11 regular meeting they would like to have more information regarding the idea that is been pitched by members of the Lamont Light Up and Perogy Festival Committee. In a letter to mayor and council, committee chair Heather Price stated members have been investigating the purchase and relocation of a log cabin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We feel it would be a great asset to the Town of Lamont for use as a visitor centre/museum beside the Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s monument.â&#x20AC;? Price went on to say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have contacted the
seller as well as Edalta Building movers who could relocated the building. Before we proceed we want to connect with mayor and council to ensure the Town of Lamont would welcome a donation of this building. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be clear, we would provide for payment of the building and relocation only. The Town would be responsible for a surface, footings or whatever is necessary to place the building on. The Town would also be responsible for any finishing, utility hook ups
and ongoing costs. We are not in a position to own or care for a building.â&#x20AC;? Coun. Dave Taylor, said that while he appreciates the gesture, and that it is a neat idea, he would like more information as to ownership, the cost of the foundation, as well as cost of water, power and sewer hook ups and ongoing maintenance that would be required for such a facility. Fellow council colleagues expressed similar sentiments, and recommended the item be
referred back to administration to gather more information. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would like to commend them on their goodwill and their offer, and would like to gather more information before we proceed,â&#x20AC;? stated
Mayor Bill Skinner. Coun. Wayne Field pointed out that operating a visitor centre can be labour and volunteer intensive, especially if it becomes a museum, and said that would be something for the next council
to think about in the future. He also applauded the initiative shown by the committee, but said it was a little too early to make a decision. Price declined to comment on the proposal.
