The Mundare Street Festival was a delight for Canada Day revellers on main street the evening of July 1st. Besides world class entertainment there were glitter tattoos, treats, and merchandise available for sale. The event was a great success, and kudos to the Town of Mundare for an excellent event for the whole family to enjoy.

Three Mundare businesses targeted by thieves Michelle Pinon Editor

A rash of break-ins were reported to Vegreville this past week.

Sgt. Jerry Nutbrown, Vegreville RCMP Detachment Commander, confirmed there were break-ins to three businesses located on Mundare’s main street, and one break-in to a nearby garage in the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 28.

Mundare Registries, Chicken Coop Quilt Shop, and A Little Bit of Everything antique/second hand store were the three businesses involved in the robbery.

“A few smaller items were taken,” said Sgt. Nutbrown, referring to the business break-ins, and a wallet was stolen from a vehicle in the garage. “We know the bank card was used in Edmonton.”

Sgt. Nutbrown stated that, “It looks like the crimes are related, but we don’t have a link to connect them.” The investigation is ongoing, and Sgt. Nutbrown encourages anyone with information to call RCMP. For about the past year, Sgt. Nutbrown said the Vegreville RCMP Detachment has seen an increase in the number of property crimes, especially rural property crimes. “There has been a big increase in gas being stolen from farm and construction equipment.”

In response, Sgt. Nutbrown has increased the num-

ber of patrols in the rural areas. In fact, some of the most prolific offenders are currently operating in and around Mundare, noted Sgt. Nutbrown.

As far as what rural residents can do to deter criminals is to talk to their neighbours, and if they see suspicious people and/or vehicles on their property to write down a detailed description, and pass on that information to RCMP. He even encourages rural residents to take a photo on their phone, and submit it to RCMP. But he never encourages residents to confront individuals on their property. “You don’t know what they’re willing to do to you.” If a person is desperate, they may go to greater lengths, to get what they are looking for, added Sgt. Nutbrown.

There are other precautions people can take such as not keeping wallets, cell phones, iPads, or other valuables in a vehicle, even if the vehicle is locked, and to always lock the doors to your residence. Sgt. Nut brown also advises people not to carry their social insurance card or birth certificate in their wallet.

Another deterrent is the implementation of a security system at their residence, and/or place of business.

Sgt. Nutbrown said he is not aware of any crime watch organization operating in the area, but that such groups as Rural Crime Watch or Citizens On Patrol are also deterrents to criminal activity. “The main thing is to be proactive.”

Valerie Retzlaff, owner of the Chicken Coop Quilt Store, said she didn’t know about the break-in until she arrived at work around 9:40 a.m. She said she was told the alarm at the insurance and registry office went off around 3:30 a.m. that morning.

Retzlaff said the thief gained access by prying the side entrance open.

Stefanie Krause, who owns the antiques shop next to the quilt shop, was alerted on her way to work by phone. Stefanie admits her heart was racing, as were the thoughts in her mind driving to her store. “The police were there when I arrived.” She suspects they were looking for cash, but does not keep any on hand at the shop. “I’m just grateful no one vandalized anything,” she added.

For the most part, the merchandise in Krause’s business was not vandalized, and the only thing that was stolen was a display cabinet. It was the first break in she’s experienced since opening her shop last May.

Minimum wage hike putting pressure on Lamont and district businesses, says chamber president Michelle Pinon Editor

The province’s decision to increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2018 has its pros and cons.

Recently, Doug Sullivan, President of the Lamont & D i s t r i c t Chamber of Commerce, was asked to weigh in on the issue.

Sullivan said raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2018 is aggressive by any standard. He feels, “The current plan will put significant pressure on businesses in our rural com-

munities, and negatively affect our seniors and other fixed income residents’ lifestyles in an already stressed economic environment.�

While there are some benefits to a minimum wage increase, Sullivan said there are also negatives, particularly to rural small business owners, who will suffer a loss of income and to those on fixed incomes, such as seniors, who will be faced with higher prices for essentials. “Higher prices caused by minimum wage increase, plus the effects

of the incoming carbon tax over and above the proposed rebates, are going to put a major strain on the budgets of fixed income, and lower income residents.�

He was careful to point out that since, “Most small businesses in Lamont County consist of the owner’s family and a few workers, we have already seen an effect from the first minimum wage increase in October 2015 with reduced hours of work, and layoffs, with more workload on the owner and family. Raising prices is often not an option for businesses close to major centres, as they have to consider the price competition from

larger businesses. Since some of these owners are near retirement age, they are strongly considering selling or closing their place of business.�

Another downside to this minimum wage increase is that businesses will have to increase the hourly rate of more senior workers and supervisors accordingly, noted Sullivan. As well, other businesses with no minimum wage workers will need to raise wages in order to retain their workers, that will put added pressure on business owners, he added.

It appears that the basis that the government, and the Alberta Federation of Labour are using, and the studies

they are quoting, are particularly one-sided in their evaluation of the efficacy of this effort. For instance, the comment keeps coming up about the “single working mother�. Granted, there are many of those, but they do make up only a relatively small portion of minimum wage workers. The majority of minimum wage earners are those entering the work force for the first time – usually students. Since entry level workers are not as productive as more senior workers, businesses will prefer to hire more experienced workers, shutting the door on young workers entering the work force. “There are other options

that are available to the government, particularly in the current Alberta economy. One is a sliding scale wage for students and others just entering the work force‌A second option would be to subsidize the wages of those vulnerable people returning to the work force until they have achieved the level of training and education required to justify a higher wage.�

Opinion From Where I Sit: The Cure

By Hazel Anaka Eleven months later I’m still trying to get rid of my foot and heel pain.

Losing one’s ability to freely move pain-free has huge lifestyle implications. It could impair my ability to work. It’s already impairing my ability to play. It’s forcing me to avoid walking any real distance outside or on the treadmill.

By way of a quick recap: last August walking became nearly impossible because of pain. An x-ray said heel spurs; a podiatrist said posterior tibial tendonitis dysfunction; a

chiropractor said plantar fasciitis (‘gone rogue’ said I. I’ve had PF for about twenty-five years).

Wearing an ankle brace brought temporary relief last September but can hardly be considered a long-term solution.

Active release technique as practiced by some specially trained chiropractors is making a difference. The chiropractor uses massage and pressure from fingers and a curved steel tool (!) to break up scar tissue and release trapped nerves.

Pain relief should result.

While I’m definitely better I am not ‘cured’ by any stretch of the imagination.

Self and professional massage are also helping with lengthening and strengthening the fascia.

Yoga stretches aid flexibility. When rotating my ankles causes a gravelly, crunchy noise I think I need WD-40. Apparently osteoarthritis is the likely culprit. Great.

Having a massage and a chiro treatment a day apart results in tender painful areas and a discussion about the benefits of Diclofenac, a greasy, pharmacist concocted anti-inflammatory gel. So off to the doctor I go to get the prescription. I was willing to have pharmaceutical help working silently between treatments and perhaps hurrying along my eventual – God help me – recovery.

So I massage in the gooey stuff on the soles of my feet and back of my heels and put on little spa booties. My left shoulder is also beat up and has bruises so I work the gel into that area too.

The label on the jar says apply up to four times a day as needed so I’m determined not to skimp.

I hate taking medication so I usually err on the side of taking/using less of whatever is prescribed. That wasn’t going to happen this

time.

After a total of three applications, I wonder about a pervasive headache and slight dizziness when I bend over. I Google Diclofenac. It is a NSAID (non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug). Severe allergic reactions; bloody or black, tarry stools; change in the amount of urine pro-

duced; chest pain; confusion; depression; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; mental or mood changes; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe headache or dizziness; severe or persistent irritation at the application site; severe or persistent stomach pain or nausea; severe vomiting or diar-

rhea; shortness of breath; unusual joint or muscle pain; unusual tiredness or weakness; vision or speech changes are some of the severe side effects listed. I sponged off the ointment and considered my next move. I hate it when the cure is worse than the disease, from where I sit.

Mundane or Mundare?

Street Performer Mike Wood definitely got my attention after he singled me out in the Canada Day crowd gathered on main street July 1st. Trust me I wasn’t looking for any attention, but was the centre of it for a short time, which seemed like a long time, trying to decide what the best vantage point would be for taking photos during the show.

Wood wondered if anyone had ever mistakenly called Mundane for Mundare? Wood said it often happened that his hometown of Union, was mistakenly referred to as Onion. I thought his comment was funny as well as timely since I have inadvertently typed in Mundane instead of Mundare several times in recent months. I think it’s because spell check automatically changes Mundare to Mundane. It is frustrating if I or Marion don’t catch the mistake during proof reading articles, headlines, and cutlines on Monday during production.

Also, for folks who may be interested, in the Children’s Miracle Wish article that appeared on Page 7 of the June 28 edition, missing is the hashtag #DoThe Livi in one of the references.

Anyway, I’d like to thank the Town of Mundare and the Town of Bruderheim for hosting Canada Day activities. I talked with many people who reside outside of those communities how much they appreciate what the town and volunteer groups are doing to make those events truly memorable for them and their families and friends.

There are several more family based festivals on the horizon this summer as well. First up is the Parks Day Celebration at Elk Island National Park that will feature musical entertainment and learn to demonstrations. Next up will be the Lamont & District Agricultural Society’s Summer Sizzler Rodeo & Agricultural Fair that goes from July 22 to 24 at the Conrad Schinkinger Memorial Grounds. Elk Island National Park will be hosting The Bison festival on August 13 and feature exhibits from artisans, bison producers, culinary presentations, as well as live entertainment.

Heartland Ag. Days will take place from Aug. 19 to 21 at the ag. grounds in Bruderheim. Some of the best chariot and chuckwagon drivers in Alberta will be competing in the finals. On August 20, the Mundare & District Agricultural Society will hosting Mundare Agri-Daze which features a parade, bench show, market, and more. On August 20 and 21 head on down to Andrew for the fourth annual Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival which will feature a variety of activities including: Babas Bazaar, Outdoor Music Jam, Ukrainian dancing and traditional games, Zabava, Borshch Cook Off, historical tours and other presentations throughout the two day event.

There is so much to see and do in our own backyard this summer, so remember to circle all the dates and activities for your enjoyment.

New radio system gets thumbs up from local emergency responders Michelle Pinon Editor

Even though the province officially launched its new first responder radio system on July 1st, local emergency medical technicians (EMT) have been utilizing the new communication system for the past several months.

Shane Milliken, an EMT with Prairie EMS and Regional Deputy Fire Chief with Lamont County, says the new system has already been very beneficial to local first responders. “It has proven very effective and has increased the areas with radio service within the county.”

He went on to say, “In fact, it was put through its paces with the fires we had in April 2016 as there was two to three EMS crews in areas with historically poor coverage with the old EMS iDen system and they had absolutely no issues

with radio communication.”

The Alberta First Responders Radio Communications System, (AFRRCS), is set up to provide coverage for first responders through a system of hundreds of radio towers.

“The AFRRCS system has the infrastructure in place, however, we need to budget for the equipment to hook up to this system,” noted Milliken.

“As for the fire side, this is a consideration for future years.”

Kathleen Ganley, Alberta’s Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, previously stated during a recent press conference that, “This important project will help protect the lives of Albertans, fromfagilies to first responders. This province wide radio system will ensure that the people who keep us safe every day have the communication network they need to respond as

Alberta RCMP Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan said work had been completed in all of the RCMP units across Alberta. “While the new radio system is about providing first responders with a vital tool to do their important work, it also demonstrates

what can be achieved by multiple partners coming together to work towards a common goal.”

According to information provided by the Alberta Government, construction on AFRRCS began in 2008, and will be completed this summer. Of the 332 sites, 328 have been completed.

The total cost of the project was $438 million.

The press release went on to state, “The AFRRCS system will help participating first responders to fully coordinate joint responses to emergency scenes, improve and integrate radio communication among first responders from different agencies,and reduce the cost of radio system infrastructure.”

Student Matthew Enns receives inaugural Bruderheim Meteorite STEM Award Michelle Pinon Editor

Bruderheim Mayor was on hand to present Matthew Enns with the Bruderheim Meteorite STEM Scholarship Award on Tuesday, June 28 at Bruderheim School’s annual year end awards ceremony.

STEM stands for: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Award.

Hauch said the Bruderheim Meteorite STEM Award comes with a $200 scholarship. “We wanted to start a town award last year already, and this year an anonymous donor stepped forward to donated the $200 for not only this year, but the future.

He went on to say, “We have to give credit where it is due, as our wonderful Principal Jeff (Huculak) and his great

staff took this idea and ran with it. They had the plaques made up and came up with the scholarship guidelines, and we had the school select the winner.�

While there are no specific requirements needed to qualify for the award, it is to be awarded to a Grade 6 student who has shown interest in those subject areas, and possesses great character traits. Parents are encouraged to purchase an RESP for the winning students future education, added Hauch. “We hope this award will create some healthy competition and encourage students to really grab hold of their learning opportunity. As well, this type of award helps build up a community and make people proud of where they call home.�

Long serving Lamont librarian begins a new chapter “Librarians don’t retire; they just get reshelved.”

Those were just a few of the words Lamont High School (LHS) librarian Rose Konsorada spoke during her retirement speech on Thursday, June 2 when more than 100 of her former and current students, staff, family, and friends came to wish her well and all the best in her new phase of life.

“I’m still kind of floating on air,” stated Rose, Tuesday, June 28. “It’s been an a w e s o m e month,” as friends, colleagues, and people in the community offer her congratulations and best wishes.

As to what she’ll miss about being Longtime Lamont librarian Rose Konsorada retired Wednesday, school librarian, June 29 after 34 years of service. a post she has held for the past 27 years, is chatting with the students. “I have always had work experience students,” added Rose, who was very touched when a former work experience student, Markus Wendorff told her that he wasn’t much for school, but that it made it worthwhile because of their time together in the library.

“Everyone who has worked with me knows that I have always been very interested in milestones, history of families and community, and connections,” She elaborated more on the topic during her speech at the LHS graduation ceremony on Friday, June 24, when she stated: “All of our connections are different shapes and sizes as puzzle pieces that fit together and define who we are.

I have a unique connection right here in this grad class. One grad sitting on stage tonight, Shaelyn, and sitting in the audience, her mom Janine. They were both students at LHS during my librarian years.

Janine was from the first grad class that I worked with at LHS, and Shaelyn is from the last year before retirement. Shanita and mom Kim are also a motherdaughter combination that were LHS students during my time.”

She went on to say, “Close relationships and social connections keep you happy and healthy…Our relationships bring meaning to our lives and provide the love, support, and encouragement to make it through the difficult times and the joy to celebrate the wonderful moments in life.”

One of those wonderful moments happened during our interview. “This is where your Dad went to school,” said Rose, addressing one of her former student’s small child. “I wish I was a grandma, but there’s nothing I can do about it,” said Rose. “I don’t even have anything to offer you,” before telling the former student about the upcoming summer reading program. “He loves books,” replied the former student. “Go check out the spaceship,” encouraged Rose, before turning her attention back to me.

Rose is very proud of what she has been able to accomplish in her time at the library, and the programs she has developed, and modernizing the system that transitioned from card catalogues, periodicals, magazines, and encyclopedias to digitized inventory and tracking through computers and instant access through the internet.

The main reason Rose said she was hired back in 1982 as the public librarian was to put all the books online. “It took me three years to do it.” She had to do that again when the school system changed over from Lamont County to Elk Island Public Schools, (EIPS) and once more, when the library joined the Northern Lights Library System this past year.

She fondly recalled working with library technician Denise Dorland for six months, and later serving with her on the Lamont County Public Library Board, and attending many workshops and sessions during their time with EIPS. Interestingly enough, Dorland, served as the librarian in Andrew for many years.

Last October Rose turned 60, but instead of having a big birthday party, she to her family that she wanted to do 60 different things to celebrate the milestone.

“I bought a book titled 60. It’s about a gentleman who wrote his diary about his year. It got me thinking about many things. Since I reached my 85 factor, the magic number for my pension and have a lot of things to accomplish to add up to 60 activities, I

decided the number one thing to do is retire.”

She has almost completed her 60 different things, and is looking forward to spending more time with her husband Dwayne, son Dylan and daughter Jasmine as well as her two sisters, and the many friends she has made along the way. While it has been hard to say goodbye to LHS and her colleagues and students, Rose says she will continue residing in Lamont, and will still be a volunteer with the library board and a member of the library’s book club.

Now she is also going to do what most people think she has done for the past 27 years, and that is, read some books. “I have a stack of 10 books ready to go.” Now it will be time to get started on the “to be read” pile.

Bissell Memorial United Church celebrates 80 years SUBMITTED ARTICLE The Bissell Memorial United Church in Andrew held a celebration on Sunday, June 26 commemorating 80 years of service with Rev. Debbie Brill officiating.

About 70 people gathered for the service, travelling from near and far to celebrate the life of our church. Reta Diduch and Grant Osbaldeston brought greetings from Lamont United Church and Partridge Hill. The congregation was led in song by Janetta Bartz, the organist.

Before the present church was built, there were two other churches on the same premises. In 1900 a log church was built. It was a Methodist church. George Woolley Sr. donated the logs and Mr. Carey donated the land. Four men who had experience with log building were Simon Megelvery, Ken Morrison, Tom Brown and Cleophys Norn. The men were paid $125 a day plus a meal. It took them a long time to build as all the work was done with man power tools. A carpenter from Fort Saskatchewan built a few benches and chairs to be used in the log church.

The first service was preached by T.C. Buchanan. Some other ministers were Rev. Lawford, Rev. Pike, Rev. Smith, Rev. C. Moss, Rev. Ponich, Rev. Eustace and Rev. Thompson.

In 1921 the settlement got larger, so the church was used for a school, as well as public meetings were held at the church.

The students were ages from seven to 14. Miss Medelle was the teacher.

After a few years, the log church was beyond use so a building was moved in from a district north of Andrew. It was not used too long.

The third church is the present one. A wealthy family by the name of Bissell came from England. The family donated money to the Edmonton Bissell Centre, to Peace River and to Andrew. The money was to be used for the construction of a new church. The church trustees took up the proposal and continued from there. Four trustees

drove to Peace River to see the construction there, which was already in progress.

Joe Migilvery, a gifted carpenter, undertook to build the church. With mostly man power tools and by request as to what was wanted, Joe undertook the job at $1.25 per day. Volunteer help from members and non-members was available. People were very anxious to have a church built. Mr. Ed Hamilton, with volunteer help, dug the basement with four horses and a fresno.

The Bissell family not only donated money, they also donated the pulpit, pews, Communion table and the Memorial window. In 1936 the church was dedicated as The Bissell Memorial United Church.

The ladies aid, at the time worked very hard to pay the minister and upkeep the church. They bought an organ for $35.

To make a little extra money they would embroider family names for 10 cents on a tablecloth. These tablecloths are still in use in the church downstairs. The ladies also held many bake sales and raffles.

Bible classes were very strong as children of different denominations were eager to attend.

Mrs. Bay, a piano teacher, had a choir at every service.

In 1946, a need for a manse was a must. The small original one was sold and moved across the road. The present manse was built by Mr. Kayne, who was the manager of The Alberta Lumber Co., here in Andrew and Nick Filipchuk, a local farm boy.

Again, Mr. Hamilton, with volunteers, dug the basement, probably not with the same horses, but the same fresno. Kayne and Filipchuk mixed the cement and Harry Scraba and Georgia Morie hauled water for the mix up the ramp with two wheelbarrows. One was used for cement mix and one for rocks. One of the Minnie brothers, with two sorrel horses, a stone boat, and two rain barrels hauled water for the mix. From 8 a.m, one hour for lunch break, until 6 p.m. the basement was cemented with a bunch of very tired men.

After the service at the church, the congregation moved to the Rainbow Centre to partake in a barbecue lunch.

Hamburgers, smokies, salads, beet rolls, and fruit was enjoyed by all.

Of course the Anniversary Cake completed the menu.

Love of Ross Creek community keeps dreams alive Michelle Pinon Editor

Randa Rempel has a heart of gold.

Two years ago the Ross Creek area resident stepped up to save the local community league, and is doing the best she can to keep it operating.

“Right now we are in limbo between doing okay and just existing. We need more people with kids to invest in the community so we can provide more events and activities geared towards them.”

With only a handful of families pitching in to host events and maintain the property, located about one kilometre south of Highway 16 on Range Road 191.

Longtime member Don Frogner echoed those sentiments. “We need more young volunteers,” stated Frogner, while cooking sausages at the community league’s recent Father’s Day Brunch. Rempel agreed, adding: We need more people with the desire to see our hall grow, and do more for our community.”

Rempel said she volunteered as president to save the hall, and keep the doors open. “I got involved because there was a definite need, but I stayed involved because I love the community, and what it has to offer.” Having a community hall and hosting events is “extremely important” for our community.

“Speaking from personal experience, there would be little to no other way to get to know my neighbours without the community league. We all lead very busy lives, and many people in our community now commute to the city or surrounding towns for work and school. There are also less farmers in our area then there once were. The hall is one place that brings us all together, and provides commonality, and keeps people connected.”

In fact, Rempel has a larger vision for the community league. “My dream for the community would see it updated, and possibly get running water, and indoor washrooms. I would like to see it used in partnership with Parent Link to connect the young fami-

Realistically though, I would love to see it kept open so we can continue to keep great events like the Father’s Day Brunch for people to pause from their busy life, have some fun, and connect with neighbours.”

Memberships are still available for the 2016-’17 year, and more information on the community league and events can be found on its Facebook page.

The Facebook page is another way to connect with people, and local resident, Ian Mansley, said that’s how he found out about the Father’s Day Brunch.

Even though he and his family have lived in the area 17 years, it was the first event they have attended at the venue after reading about it on Facebook.

Originally, the community league was known as the Ross Creek Athletic Association, which was incorporated in 1955. “Our land was donated to the community in honour of Ed Thor. The founders were basically all farmers from this area. Many of those

who started the hall still have family who live and farm in this area. Members were huge into softball and our ball diamond was used regularly in summertime by teams in the area.”

She went on to say that in the early ’80’s the name was changed to the Ross Creek Community Association. In 1987 the hall was built, and has been used for quilting classes, piano lessons, and bingo.

Currently they have an active aerobics class that is held at the hall twice a week, and a book club that gathers there once a month.

“The association has gone dormant several times in it’s history, but always manages a comeback.” This time she is hoping and praying more community minded residents will join to help keep the community league operating, and help enhance the quality of people’s lives, as well as increasing opportunities for local people to learn and grow in a variety of different ways.
