There was a temporary pause of obstetrical services at the Viking Health Centre due to staff shortages and an illness. The pause took place over a 48-hour period from 7 a.m. on Saturday, July 1 to 7 a.m. on Monday, July 3. During that period, any patients attending the hospital during the service disruption were transported to facilities elsewhere, either by RAAPID or EMS. Patients who were delivering babies as they presented themselves at Viking were dealt with by the hospital’s emergency department. “This temporary pause is a result of staffing vacancies and an unexpected illness,” stated Alberta Health Services. Regular services for obstetrical care resumed at 7 a.m. on Monday, July 3. AHS expressed its gratitude to all involved. “AHS is grateful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff, and would like to thank the community for its patience and understanding during this time.”
Every year on July 1, the folks at Vialta Lodge in Viking celebrate Canada Day with a ceremony to change the number of these days that are celebrated on their own sign. For 2023, Eunice Gulbraa changed the number on the “Happy Birthday Canada” sign to 156, signifying this as the 156th Canada Day. See the Vialta Lodge Chatter column inside.
