Crops looking good so far thanks to constant moisture Patricia Harcourt The latest Alberta crop report for June 27 has crops progressing well in central areas of the province, as well as in many other parts of Alberta. This, after dry conditions appeared to stall growth following spring seeding, including in Beaver County. But now in Beaver County there is no need for an official report to for farmers and others to notice that there is “an increasingly aggressive crop development” that started following widespread soaking rains in early June. Also reported was “a significant year-over-year improvement in soil moisture levels across the province.” The best news farmers can hear now is that three-quarters of the crops in the ground are in good or excellent condition, only marginally behind the five-year and 10-year averages, which were 74 and 73 per cent respectively. Lowest rated crops are mustard, durum wheat and potatoes while chickpeas, spring wheat, oats and flax are rated in the best condition. The report also states that other major crops like barley, canola and dry peas are basically in line with the long-term provincial averages for this time of year. But the dry conditions after seeding mean that growth and development staging is modestly behind long term averages. But they are narrowing as the season progresses and as the rain continues to fall. The first two weeks of June saw significant areas of the province receive 40-125 mm of rain. “Surface moisture conditions are now drastically improved,” with 76 per cent good to excellent, 19 per cent poor or fair, and five per cent excessive. The North East area of the province, which includes Beaver County, reports crop conditions are good to excellent at this time. However, canola crops are below what the other major crops are in quality. Soil conditions are rated as 26 per cent excellent for surface and 14 per cent excellent for subsurface; 67 per cent good (53 per cent subsoil); five per cent fair (14 subsurface); 0 per cent poor (18 per cent subsurface) and just two per cent excessive (two per cent subsurface).
Black Nugget campground open in time for Canada Day Patricia Harcourt The good news for those who like camping at Black Nugget Lake is that the campground reopened on June 29 after undergoing repairs. Those who will be coming to camp at the site are being asked to observe certain restrictions, as stated in a media release that reads: “Please note that there is still some ongoing work being completed at the site, so when campers arrive at the campground they will notice that the RV dumping site has been relocated to an area just west of the previous location.” That area will be gravel for the rest of the season. A concrete pad will be put in place after the
season ends. Some modifications have also been made to the concession area. The county says landscaping work “will be ongoing.” The campground was closed since May 24 pending completion of repairs to the sewage system and improvements to the site. At the regular meeting of council June 1, council agreed to expedite matters to get the repairs done as quickly as possible. This meant waiving the purchasing policy to hire in a timely manner and get the work done in time to salvage some of the season. Council also authorized a change in the scope of the work regarding upgrades to the septic system infrastructure at the RV septic dump station.
