Bruderheim hosts impressive Canada Day celebrations
MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS
It was a hot summer day in Bruderheim on July 1 for Canada Day celebrations with the temperature around 29 degrees celsius. The parade kicked-off around 11 a.m. to the delight of a large crowd that had gathered on Queen Street. There were train rides, horse drawn wagon rides, fiddle music, dog agility demonstrations, crafts, caricature artists, band performances, bouncy rides, tug-of-war, and the ever popular dunk tank. The Marching Koalas not only won the heart of Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch, but the hearts of many other Canadians during their recent stay in the community. The Australian marching band made a spectacular debut during the parade, and performed masterfully during their afternoon outdoor performance on Canada Day. “Every comment I heard regarding the day was that the parade was awesome! For a small town, Bruderheim, I heard from a very reliable source was ‘world class,’ stated Hauch. “Our town residents and volunteers and all of the folks who were a part of the day were simply awesome.” Hauch went on to say, “The Marching Koalas and their entourage was a fantastic group of folks, very down to earth and so appreciative of our town’s efforts.” Hauch said the town was so fortunate to have the support of many organizations. “The folks who really took hold of the vision of having an Australian marching band was the Bruderheim Recreation
Board. Milne, President of Alex Milne Associates Ltd., says you can “reclaim your backyard in minutes so your family and guests can enjoy the entire season bug free. Milne says the environmentally friendly product is great for personal, community and commercial b a s e d applications. This food grade, water based, steam distilled garlic oil formula has been used successfully by tens of thousands of Canadians and lawn care professionals nationally for more than 10 years. In fact, the product was recently used in the central park area of Bruderheim for Canada Day events, and worked like a charm. Mosquitos, can be thousands of times more sensitive to garlic than humans, and Milne says mosquitos will instantly leave areas that have been sprayed. Milne says he couldn’t believe the results when he first experimented with the garlic oil 11 years ago. Milne chuckles when he explains how he first got wind of the idea. “I was at a plowing match 11 years ago and I was looking at the booths when I overheard a couple of farmers talking about how they put garlic near their cattle and hors-
es to control mosquitos.” Since Milne was already into developing ecoconsumer products he asked to join in on the conversation. He talked with his chemist, and within a week he was testing his very own product. A year later the MOSQUITOLess was on the shelves of hardware stores and available through independent nurseries. Milne also points out that the product is the only one of its kind available in commercial grade. The product has also been approved by Health C a n a d a , PMRA<and MOE domestic and commercial ratings. This is the first year, the company is selling a new hose end sprayer that will treat up to 3,000 square feet in minutes. Even Milne, who resides in Mississauga, Ontario, admits MOSQUITO-Less is a “great Canadian story;” and he is very happy he played a key role in its testing, development, marketing and distribution across the country.

Vegreville hospital to receive $2.5 million upgrade Local MLA tours facility with officials to get a first hand look Michelle Pinon Editor
The Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA was pleased to announce recently the province will be providing $2.5 million worth of upgrades to St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Vegreville. “St. Joseph’s hospital serves the greater region, so this is good news not only for the citizens of Vegreville but also those in the surrounding area. The upgrades to the hospital in Vegreville will improve patient safety and comfort,” stated Fenske, following a tour of the facility on June 27. Patients will benefit from renovated, barrierfree washrooms and improvements to the building’s heating and ventilation system. Planned improvements include: * Replacement of three original HVAC units that are in poor condition with one new rooftop unit. *Renovation of patient washrooms to accommodate wheelchairs and
patients with restricted mobility. * Addition of sinks and showers to patient bathrooms for improved infection control and privacy. The next steps are planning, design and tendering, with onsite work expected to start within the next year. Plans will be developed to ensure the least possible disruption to patients while the renovations are underway,” stated Covenant Health President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Dumeilie. “We provide compassionate care in all our facilities, considering the mind, body and soul. These renovations will help make a difference in patient and family experiences at the St. Joseph’s General,” added Dumeille. St. Joseph’s is a 25 bed acute care hospital operated by Covenant Health. The hospital offers various services including emergency, acute and clinical care; lab, x-ray and dialysis services; and respiratory therapy. The hospital was built in 1965 with a major addition in 1990.

Military dentists overpaid
There are approximately 140 salaried dentists/specialists working for the Department of National Defense (DND) earning between $200,000 and $300,000 annually, plus benefits. They cost DND about $56 million a year. The data showed that despite having paid dentists, the DND still contracted out millions in dental care to the private sector, leaving its own paid dentists with little to do. Normally, in the private sector, dentists perform between $400,000 and $800,000 worth of dental work annually with specialists hitting the $1 million range or more. According to the 2008 data, 75 per cent of DND’s dentists performed less than $200,000 worth of dental work and many were below $100,000. The data also showed it was getting worse instead of better, as two years later 80 per cent of DND dentists performed less than $200,000 worth of dental work. The financial calculations were based on the Ontario Dental Fee guide. In 2007, four DND specialists did no specialist work at all and many did less than $50,000 worth. In 2008, two dental specialists reported no work, as did one in 2011. According to the Canadian Dental Association there is one dentist for every 1,664 people in Canada, compared to the Canadian military, which has one dentist for every 500 personnel. From Where I Sit: Taking Time to Savour
By Hazel Anaka My stay at a downtown Edmonton hotel a few months ago coincided with the city’s annual Downtown Dining Week. The 2014 version, the eleventh one, ran from March 14 to March
23 and involved many of Edmonton’s most popular and pricey downtown restaurants. This event, sponsored by the Downtown Business Association is a way to showcase some of its members. For ten days patrons can enjoy lunch or dinner for $15, $25 or $50 at thirty different restaurants. I was happy with the increased number of interesting and affordable choices within walking distance of the hotel. On Monday afternoon when I tried to buy something at the Canada Place food court for Tuesday’s in-room breakfast virtually all the

vendors were already closed. I guess when all the federal government employees have had their afternoon coffee break most of the vendors close. I suppose I could have gone to the donair shop on Jasper Avenue but that option didn’t speak to me. If one goal of the promotion is to get people looking, thinking, talking it worked. Trying to pick a restaurant forced me to the web to research which ones were offering what. First I checked the entire listing to eliminate those who were only offering dinner. Next I stroked off those whose menus did-

n’t appeal to me. Location was less of a factor because the participating restaurants were located within a few short blocks of where I was staying. I ended up choosing Ruth’s Chris Steak House. The online reservation thingy didn’t work so I called to reserve my table for one. This was not the first time I’ve eaten alone in a snazzy place nor will it be the last. I like to think it takes a bit of chutzpah and self-assurance. The dining room quickly filled and I was indeed the only solo patron. I had Demi Lovato’s Staying Strong

crisp white shirt, tie, black tuxedo style vest, black slacks and black apron. My food was exquisitely prepared and beautifully plated. Only when I saw a woman taking a photo of her entrée did I kick myself for not thinking of doing it myself. It no longer qualifies as food porn if you’ve mixed it and moved it and dug into it. And it proves, yet again that the simplest of ingredients are transformed in the hands of a talented chef. Taking the time to savour it is the least I can do from where I sit.

Mundare firefighter
takes the plunge for a charitable cause Michelle Pinon Editor
Trisha Brison is always up for a challenge, and on June 26 the Mundare firefighter took the plunge in the Cold Water Challenge. Brison chose to accept the challenge and got a strong blast from the water hose near Funshine Daycare during the warm and sunny afternoon. Her husband, Capt. Shamus Brison was happy to assist with the challenge, along with a few of the children from the day care centre. Fire Chief Glenda Dales said firefighters across the province, and especially within Lamont County have taken up the Cold Water Challenge of recent. Each person accepting challenges gets sprayed with cold water from the engine, and they in turn, challenge another firefighter, who has 24 hours to respond. If they forfeit the challenge they donate $100. If they accept the challenge they get soaked and donate $25 to their charity of choice. Brison accepted the challenge from Willingdon Fire Chief Dusty Luchak, and in kind donated $25 to her charity of choice, Kids Sport in Vegreville. Dales says the first local challenge started in Bruderheim, and has spread to the County of Two Hills, southern Alberta and even up into the Yukon. She estimates there have been about 20 people accept the challenge, and there appears to be no end in sight. “It seems to have gone viral on Facebook. This is all done through social media.” Dales says it is a good way to promote the work of fire departments and the work they do within their communities as well as help out other charitable organizations.

Gas monitors give first responders peace of mind Michelle Pinon Editor
Firefighters in Lamont now have added peace of mind thanks to the recent acquisition of multi-gas monitors. “Now we have a way of measuring levels of hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide,” said firefighter Mike Klos, who started looking into the feasibility of purchasing the monitors after attending a firefighters conference in Indianapolis, Indiana last summer. Both Klos, and fellow department member Colin Price, started researching the possibility; and they, along with other firefighters decided to focus on the project. To that end they began fundraising by
selling firefighter calendars, asking for corporate and personal donations as well as dipping into the department’s equipment fund to come up with the money to purchase the multi-gas monitors that cost just over $14,000. Before Klos said they had no way of accurately measuring the levels of the deadly gases. Also, he said they can now identify potential trouble spots before firefighters heading into a situation, i.e. structure or vehicle fire. “Now we can measure levels in parts per million.” The monitors will also indicate whether the area surrounding a scene has any off-gases and if it is safe for the removal of breathing apparatuses. For example, before if
there was no evidence of smoke, then firefighters thought they were breathing clean air, but that was not necessarily the case. “We wouldn’t know if we were putting anyone (firefighters and members of the public) in jeopardy. Even though we couldn’t smell smoke it could have been toxic.” Klos also pointed out that firefighters also get a lot of calls from members of the general public requesting testing of their carbon monoxide detectors, and that this will also provide added peace of mind for them as well. “It will give everyone peace of mind, and we all want to go home at the end of the day,” added Klos.

Installation of new transmission lines currently underway in Lamont County Michelle Pinon Editor
Motorists can expect delays as crews install transmission lines along Highway 16 between Range Road 160 and 161 west of Vegreville this week. According to Alberta Transportation, motorists can expect delays during construction of ATCO Elelctrics Eastern Alberta Transmission Line. “Traffic will be stopped intermittently between 7 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. for up to five minutes in both directions throughout the day to accommodate construction and transmission line placement. Alberta Transportation also wanted to point out to motorists that speed fines double when workers are in con-
struction zones, and are asked to adhere to the posted speed limits, while obeying all traffic signs and flag persons. ATCO Electric is using helicopters to place the transmission lines, and work will continue down the line until construction is completed later this winter. Work on this $1.8 billion project began in Dec. of 2012, and is expected to be finished by Dec. 31, 2014. The route, a total of 485 kilometres, will run all the way from north of Gibbons to south of Brooks. The prime contractor of the project is Bechtel, and there are 16 sub-contactors of the project. With more than 800 workers involved with the project, many of the supplies and services they require are purchased in local communities.

Surprise Bike Ride thrills teen cancer survivor Michelle Pinon Editor Sommer Riley’s last day of school at Lamont High was a very memorable one for the local teen. Thanks to mom Angel Matyachuk, there was a small crew of bikers waiting outside of the school to take Sommer on a surprise motorcycle ride to Fort Saskatchewan. The man who got the biggest hug was Rusty Weir, who has been riding in Sommer’s honour in the Revving Up For Kids motorcycle fundraiser for the Kids with Cancer Society for the past several years. Back in June of 2010 Sommer’s family had the honour of riding along with Rusty in the fundraiser, said Val Figliuzzi, executive director with the Kids with Cancer Society. “She was the spokes child for that year,” added Figluizzi. “They got to meet many amazing riders and made many new friends.” Since that time, Rusty has held many of his own
fundraisers for the cause as well as other bikers. “He promised Sommer that one day he would pick her and her sister Autumn up at school with a bunch of riders and take them for a ride,” added Figliuzzi. “Rusty is an amazing man with a heart of gold. This group of bikers are one-of-a-kind, and have made a world of difference to many children affected with cancer.” Back in February of 2007, at the age of eight, Sommer was diagnosed with T-cell Leukemia. She went through a rough road of chemo and radiation, along with many other surgeries, pointed out Figliuzzi, and just short of four years later was declared cancer free.
The gesture, on the part of Rusty and his bikers friends, was very emotional for Sommer who had trouble controlling her tears of joy, but for that; she and her family are eternally grateful for their love and support over the years. “I think these riders need to be recognized for the amazing things they do for these children, and how they take time out of their day just to put a smile on a child’s face,” said Angel, who will always cherish that moment with Sommer, Autumn and an extraordinary group of selfless people who demonstrated their dedication and love in return.

Managing difficult yard situations can make lawn care challenging Improper drainage or low-lying areas in a yard may contribute to a muddy mess. Soil that is inhospitable for grass also may end up causing muddy patches because the grass simply does not grow. In some cases, remedying a muddy yard is easy and inexpensive. Some homeowners find that tilling the soil and amending it with a fiber mulch helps to absorb extra water and make the conditions better for lawn seeds to sprout.
Many homeowners aim for a picture perfect lawn complete with rolling acres of soft, green grass. But Mother Nature may have other things in mind, providing homeowners with less-thanstellar growing conditions for their lawns, plants, and other foliage. Frustration can mount when a yard is muddy, is especially shady, or has soil that doesn't seem to grow a thing. In such instances, homeowners may have to go the extra mile to get the yard they desire.
This also helps to aerate compacted soil that can hinder grass growth. Adding soil fill also may help to level lowlying areas that can be puddling. Some homeowners
find that they need to do a little more work and spend some more money to fix irrigation issues. Installing a draining system or having the property sloped to draw water away can some-
times be done by a homeowner but is often best left to a professional. You may need to dig trenches, and the property may need to be regraded to make a dif-
ference. Grass and other plants may not grow well with sandy or clay soil. Again, amending the soil is one way to remedy the problem. Continued Page 15 YARD CAREon EXTRA! 2

Yard Care
EXTRA! P1 Fromfrom Page 10
Although it will take some work at the outset, amending the soil can improve conditions and reduce how much maintenance the lawn needs. Digging down several inches and adding nutrient-rich filler soil will help create conditions that are better for growing. Those who are interested in planting vegetables could opt for raised garden beds above the challenging soil. Sometimes a yard is problematic because of the amount of sunshine it receives. Too much sunshine can scald certain grasses, while inadequate sunshine may result in bare patches where grass won't grow. Today there are many grass blends that are tailored toward specific sunlight scenarios. Homeowners may find that low-light blends will grow better in shady areas. For those who are finding no luck with grass blends, it may just be necessary to think creatively. Plant shade-loving plants, such as ferns or ground cover, where the grass won't take. Design the landscape so it looks intentional. Rock or wood chips placed in certain areas may also mask temperamental growing areas. There are options for managing a yard with challenges, and professionals at your local lawn and garden store can often help!
Solid, high-speed performance in any crop.
W H E T H E R I T C O M E S via quicker service and maintenance in the yard or higher capacity in the field, Hesston 9800 Series windrowers and swathers by Massey Ferguson® are at the top of their class in total productivity. They’re the first windrowers ever to use an onboard virtual computer terminal, maximizing your ease of use and productivity. They get the job done faster with 22 MPH road speeds and 16 MPH field speeds. And with a high speed drive motor, you’ll experience about 14% higher gradeability while climbing steep slopes with ease.

We didn’t do it... whatever it is
When is the best time to pre-plan your funeral? The best time to begin making your prearrangements is NOW, while you’re thinking about it. While some people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may think it’s too early to preplan, people who do say that prearranging their funerals is smart financial planning and gives them added peace of mind knowing they aren’t leaving this burden to family members. By taking time now to collect cost information and calmly making choices related to your own funeral arrangements, you’ll be protecting your family against the stress of having to make these decisions at a time of extreme emotional distress. This checklist will help you make sure every detail is tended to: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6)

Whitetail Crossing Golf Club hosts Alberta’s finest golfers during Sun Life Financial Ladies Amateur Championship
MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS
Mundare resident Robin DeJong-Jarvis hits a ball off the 10th tee during the practice run for the ladies amateur open. By Robin’s side was her father, her biggest fan and supporter. She has been golfing competitively since the age of 10, and enjoyed the opportunity to play on home turf this past week. Michelle Pinon Editor
While it was a battle to get the Whitetail Golf Course in Mundare in shape for last week’s Sun Life Financial Ladies Amateur Championship, managing partner Laurent LeBlanc was pleased with the phenomenal job the work crew had done. LeBlanc was so pleased that Whitetail Crossing had been selected as host site for the provincial championship that took place at the club from July 1-3. Equally excited was tournament chair Jim Richardson. Also thrilled to be a part of the action was Robin DeJong-Jarvis of Mundare. DeJong Jarvis, who lives near the 12th hole with her husband and four young children, was ecstatic about participating in the competition on her home turf. “Since we we’re hosting, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” state DeJong Jarvis during a practice round the morning of June 30th. For DeJong-Jarvis, being on home turf was
very nice. So was having her husband Brad as her caddy. While she spends much more time helping her children with their game, Robin said it was nice to be competing in the event and catching up with some of the other competitors she knows personally. Robin, the youngest of five children, said she grew up playing golf near her home in Grande Prairie. “I’ve been playing competitive golf since I was 10-yearsold.” She has won many titles and trophies over the years, and is over the moon that her oldest child is competing in the junior provincial championships. DeJong-Jarvis said she always loved the game, traveling to different places and playing on lots of different links. “The kids are just getting into it, and I feel like we’re in this game for the long haul.” She has learned many life lessons on the golf course, and is hoping the exact same type of thing for her own four children. Like everything in life, you roll with the flow and take it one shot at a time.
Jaclyn Lee, holding trophy above, was crowned the winner of the ladies amateur open on July 3 at the Whitetail Crossing Golf Club in Mundare.

We would like to remind homeowners and contractors that a development permit is required for most development in the County. Development is not necessarily a structure but also land use. Although farm structures (on parcels of land over 65 acres) may not require a development permit or building permit, a Farm Declaration form must be completed (no charge) and submitted to Lamont County Planning & Development Department - this is important as setback requirements to property boundaries and local roads or highways must be adhered to. Lamont County is responsible for administering the Safety Codes Act in the Building, Electrical, Gas, Plumbing and Private Sewage Disposal disciplines. The Inspections Group Inc. administers this on our behalf and all safety code permits must be obtained through them. Safety code permit applications and information may be obtained from:
