Ringing endorsement for new 811 Health Link phone number More Albertans using 811 than old Health-Link numbers Just weeks after the launch of Health Link’s new 811 phone number, Albertans are grabbing on to the easy to access number and dialling 811 for health information and advice. Call statistics show just two weeks after the number was announced, 66 per cent of callers were using the new, easy-toremember number in place of the old 10digit numbers. Health Link is Alberta Health Services’ free, 24/7 health information and advice line providing support to over one million Albertans last year. This province-wide service helps callers by

providing at-home treatment options and information on the most appropriate health care services often avoiding an unneeded visit to the emergency

department. Of those who called with a health concern last year, nearly half (48 per cent) were given advice to

care for themselves at home, 36 per cent were told to visit their doctor or another health care provider, and just 16 per cent were advised to go t o

the emerg e n c y department. Health Link staff provide advice and navigation services via telephone as well as

Health Link can also connect callers to interpretation services in over 200 different languages for those Albertans who don’t speak English as their first language. 811 replaces the existing local numbers in Calgary and Edmonton as well as the province-wide tollfree number. The old numbers will continue to direct callers to Health Link for the time being. In a medical emergency, Albertans should continue to dial 911 or visit the nearest emergency department.

The down side to seasonal fresh fruit - fruit flies

Last weekend, many enjoyed garden parties or picnics, including myself, featuring the fresh fruit of the season. However, the morning light also revealed a host of tiny little fruit flies happily flitting about the fruit bowl. Fruit flies are evident in the home at any time of year, but they are most commonly encountered a bit later in the season. The adults are easy to spot, being a hefty 2.5 mm (1/8 inch) long with large red eyes and a tan to black body. Fruit flies lay eggs on fermenting fruits and vegetables and any other accommodating moist organic surface as long as there is some fermentation of some kind of organic material in process. The eggs will hatch within days and larvae will become breeding adults within a week. This is significant, as each female may lay as many as 500 eggs in her short lifetime.

This leads to a population explosion if all factors are favourable. I have fond (or not so fond) memories of genetics labs that favour the study of fruit flies – specifically due to their prolific regeneration! However, for homeowners, this enormous breeding potential simply means that a little bit of fruit rot can quickly generate a house full of flies. The infestations will generally originate when infested fruits or vegetables are brought into the home and left at room temperature, but adult flies may also gain entry through poorly screened doors and windows. At this time of year we have such abundance of produce that many sites in the home are attractive to these little critters. Fruit flies will also breed in drains, recycle bins, garbage containers, or even dirty mops or other cleaning apparatus that remain moist for a period of time.

The most important step in eradicating fruit flies is to locate where they are breeding. Any fruit or vegetables that are ripe should be refrigerated, eaten, or discarded. If you suspect that a drain is the prime breeding site, then tape a plastic bag over the drain for a night and look in the morning for adult fruit flies. If you find some, then simply flush the drain with hot water to help

keep it as clean as possible. It is also a good idea to use a fine mesh screen to prevent them from getting in and out of the drain area. A simple trap can be set up on your kitchen counter by using a used (and washed) yogurt container covered with saran wrap. Simply place a banana peel in the container (or other fruit part), cover with saran wrap secured with an elastic band.

Poke a number of small holes in the saran wrap big enough to accommodate the passage of a fruit fly. If you have a fruit fly problem, within a short period of time you will find the container will be filled with flies, able to enter but unable to find their way out. To take care of the captive flies, simply place the container in the freezer for a short period of time. The life span of a fruit

fly is relatively short, so once the breeding site is eliminated, adults soon disappear, and once the winter arrives, there is less chance of a repeat infestation.

The Shriners are Coming to a Parade Near You Submitted When people think of the Shriners they quite often think of clowns, the funny hats they wear, men riding in little cars or on tiny motorbikes, or circuses. We don’t deny that we have a lot of fun, but we have fun with a purpose and there is a serious side of the Shriners. The concept of Shriners International was formed by a gr oup of Masons in New York City in 1870 and the first official meeting of the first Shrine Centr e was held on September 26, 1872. There are approximately 300,000 Shriners world wide with nearly 200 Shrine Centr es in North and South America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. In June 1922, Shriners International opened the first Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport, Louisiana. Our hospital system now operates 22 Hospitals for Childr en, throughout the Conti, and Montreal, Quebec. In August of this year , Shriners will be opening a brand new state-of-theart hospital in Montr eal on the McGill University Campus, replacing the original hospital. Shrine Hospitals pr ovide specialized car e for children requiring treatment for orthopedic needs, burn injuries, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. Their hospitals also provide state of the art research facilities in all of these areas. All care provided at a Shrine Hospital is at no char ge to the patient or family. In Canada, this doesn’t seem like a big deal but families in the United States could potentially be facing a cost of tens of thousands of dollars to treat a child. It currently costs approximately $3 million dollars a day to operate our chain of hospitals. This is accomplished without any government funding or r efunds for patient care from insurance companies. Shriners’ mission is to: •Provide the highest quality care to childr en

with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries, and other special healthcare needs within a compassionate, family centered, and collaborative care environment. •Provide for the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals. •Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families. • From 2009 to 2013, 2,389 truck tractors were involved in casualty collisions in Alberta. There were 222 people killed and 2,841 people injured in these collisions. The deaths include 25 truck-tractor drivers, 10 of whom were killed in single vehicle rollover crashes. • There are more than 26,700 National Safety Code carriers in Alberta that operate more than 126,000 commercial vehicles. • Tractor-trailers were two per cent of the total vehicles in casualty crashes, but 9.2 per cent of the vehicles in fatal crashes. • Large vehicles take longer to stop than passenger vehicles. This increased braking time is due to a number of factors, including the size and weight of the vehicle, condition of the vehicle’ s brakes, and temperature of the brakes. • Leave at least three metres between your vehicle and the rear of a truck stopped at a light or stop sign, especially on a hill. • Trucks will usually swing slightly to the left before making a right hand turn; do not assume the driver is turning left.
