Volunteer Citizens of the Year named Michelle Pinon Editor
Cathie Chomiak was the first person Virginia Budinski told after she was officially notified about being named volunteer citizen of the year along with her husband Peter. “We won,” were the two words she texted Cathie upon hearing the news. The Mundare area residents, were two of six Albertans honoured for their outstanding volunteer work with the M. Drahomanow (Moscow Hall) Literary Society and Recreation Area. The award, co-sponsored by Direct Energy, (DE), and the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association, (AWNA); received a $1,000 cash award from DE as well as a $5,000 cheque from the company to go towards their charity of choice. Of course, the Budinski’s chose the M. Drahomanow (Moscow Hall) Literary Society and Recreation Area, as they have invested countless hours and many years to improving the facility and grounds located 16 kilometres southeast of Mundare. Virginia said she couldn’t believe it when she heard the news, and admitted to still being in a bit of a state of shock when she and Peter received the $5,000 cheque on behalf of the society on May 30th. Robert McMullen, the representative from Direct Energy, was very impressed with the longstanding
commitment of Peter and Virginia, as well as the facility and grounds he toured that afternoon. He learned that part of the proceeds from the donation will go towards a commercial dishwasher for the hall and ongoing maintenance costs. McMullen was also impressed with the hospitality and refreshments that was extended and shared following the official presentation. The hall is chalk a block full of photos from some of the special occasions celebrated there. One of the society members points to a large scoreboard on one of the walls used for the very popular card party tournament that is held every other week throughout the winter months. Tanis Kozak, vice-president and general manager for Direct Energy Canada, also commended volunteer couple saying, “Peter and Virginia should be an inspiration to all of us. Their commitment to volunteering and bringing people together at the community hall for the past 35 years is what makes communities like Mundare such an important part of Alberta. Their ongoing dedication to the community hall and passion for volunteering should be celebrated and Direct Energy is proud to honour them with this award.” Fred Gorman, President of the AWNA, offered his praise and good wishes to the duo. “The AWNA congratulates Peter and Virginia Budinski as volunteer citizens of the year. The community hall in Mundare
is integral in connecting local families and neighbours for celebration and recreation. The hall is enjoyed because of a 35 year commitment and the inspirational efforts and talents of Peter and Virginia. I am sure Mundare would agree with our 2014 choice of award recipients.” Peter has volunteered at many functions at the community hall including: ball tournaments, family reunions, camping and card parties. He also spends many hours a week cutting trees and grass, fixing fences, shoveling and plowing snow, and performing any other maintenance and upkeep that the facility needs, and he was also involved in the major renovation that the facility underwent in recent years. Virginia has served as treasurer of the society since 1981 and played an instrumental role in organizing the centennial celebration in the community in 2005. At the community hall she is looked upon for her expertise in booking events and organizing food services. As vice-president, her volunteering extends to the administrative duties that keep the hall successful and running smoothly. In fact, Virginia and Peter will be treating fellow society members John and Cathie Chomiak and Leonard and Emily Babin to a trip to the awards ceremony in Calgary on June 14. That will surely be another memorable trip and milestone to salute in the society’s illustrious and important history.

Symphony at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village ready to tug at your musical heart strings Michelle Pinon Editor
Take a musical journey back in time with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) Friday, June 14 at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV). “We are excited that the ESO is bringing their musical magic to the country, where our local audiences and supporters can experience a classical music concert in an open-air setting,” states David Makowsky, head of community and corporate relations at UCHV. “That said, we have
prepared a program that will appeal to audiences. The program includes a fun selection of Hollywood scores (Spiderman, Harry Potter and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) and hits by Ian Tyson and Gordon Lightfoot in addition to classical Ukrainian music. Guest performers Trembita will set the stage for a magical evening that begins at 6 p.m.” Michael Schurek, director of community relations for the ESO and Winspear Centre, also shared in his excitement about the upcoming event. “A concert at UCHV presents our
segment of audiences to our open-air museum. Visitors who may never have considered the UCHV will have a chance to explore more than 30 historic structures, and will hopefully return for another visit down the road. More importantly, from a community awareness perspective, we regard this event as an opportunity to cast a spotlight on our entire region.” Both the UCHV and ESO representatives feel this concert as a means to connect audiences. “From patrons of the
audiences with a unique venue to celebrate the meeting of performing arts, culture and heritage.” Schurek went on to say, “Much like how the historical role players at the Ukrainian Village set the stage for visitors to travel back in time and experience Alberta’s history, our musicians are excited to help present a musical journey that pays tribute to the Ukrainian history and identity within east central Alberta in an accessible outdoor environment.” Makowsky couldn’t agree more. “The event connects a whole new
performing arts to those of heritage, from connecting urbans patrons to this gem in the rural country side, we are extremely proud of our collaboration with the ESO that will help raise the profile of arts and culture in the region and the province,” added Makowsky. “Ultimately, we’re always striving to reach a broader audience through accessible programming,” said ESO community relations officer Carmyn Effa. “We performed in Red Deer just last month, and just
booked a show in Jasper for next year. We regularly perform in Bonnyville and Lloydminister, and have also played in Fort McMurray in the past,” added Effa. It was back in 2013 that funding was secured, and planning began for the concert soon afterwards. Now that the “what if” of the dream is almost “here we go,” Makowsky is thrilled everything is set for an unforgettable evening that’s only just a few short days away.

Children’s entertainer Fred Penner to perform Michelle Pinon Editor
Organizers of an upcoming Fred Penner event at the St. Michael Recreation Centre on June 12th are hoping for a full house. One of those organizers is Leah Johnson, the community outreach coordinator for Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Lamont County Region. “We are hoping to have a full house at the Fred Penner event, which would put us around 300 people,” said Johnson. She is also the co-ordinator for the Early Steps to Success coalition which serves both urban and rural residents in
Lamont County. The coalition will be releasing the results of a recent report that was prepared as part of Alberta Education’s Early Child Development Mapping Initiative. “It (the report) shows that a majority of kindergarten-aged children are developing above average in Lamont County,” stated Johnson. “We are very proud of our results, and we want to continue to move forward successfully.” She pointed out that a higher percentage of young children in Lamont County are developing appropriately compared to provincial norms. The report went on to state that, “just under a
quarter of kindergarten children continue to struggle in one or more areas of development,” and is where there is room for even more improvement. “There are still many parents and children in our community who need resources to help their children thrive. With strong community support, we can build on our strengths, fill in any gaps in service and connect people with the resources they really need,” added Johnson. “Our coalition has yet to speak with the individual kindergarten teachers to see how they have impacted our children and helped them reach that ‘above average’ category. One thing we know for sure is that this entire community, which includes teachers, but also, early childhood educators, preschool
teachers, mom and tots program workers, parents, grandpartents, caregivers and more, all contribute to where our children are on the development scale.” She went on to say, “The coalition is currently working towards finding out what the community really needs now to fill any gaps. We know that there are still many people that are not aware of everything that is already available in Lamont County. We are very open to feedback that anyone with a vested interest in early childhood development would give us.” The event could be just such an opportunity, and Johnson said everyone is welcome to attend, but preregistration is required.

Opinion D-Day Sacrifices
From Where I Sit: Tough Call
I viewed a short clip on the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy Friday evening. They faces I saw footage portrayed quiet dignity and respect, and I thought about those sacrifices. As appropriately stated by Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, “On June 6, 1944, Canada and her Allies dared to attempt the seemingly impossible. They bravely landed on the heavily defended shores of Normandy, and with great vision and perseverance, forever changed the course of history.” Fantino went on to say, “Many of the more than 25,000 Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen who joined the Allied forces in such a formidable task that day were young heading into war. But with skill and resolve, they often helped lead the Allied advance. Success in this campaign ultimately was a pivotal step in finally achieving Victory in Europe in May 1945.” There were other men on the front lines that day who bravely captured footage of Canadian troops storming Juno Beach. These scenes were turned into motion pictures the world would see of the D-Day Invasion. In tribute the War Amps are releasing one newsreel per week on its YouTube Channel. Having our grandson Grady come to the farm for sleepovers is always a treat. At age four and a half he is increasingly independent so I am able to get a few things done besides stare lovingly at him. He’s also a funny, inquisitive, articulate little kid. Not to put too fine a point on it but let’s just say I’ve had deeper, more meaningful conversations with him than with some adults. He loves to play in the sandbox, explore the gravel pit, play with the farm toys and other assorted stuff
I’ve acquired for him. Much of the play is active, outdoors and unlike anything he can do at home on the acreage near Sherwood Park. So I’m not worried about his increased interest in watching movies. It’s a hoot if we can stay in pyjamas, eat popcorn and make a night (or morning) out of it. His attention span is now long enough especially if I watch with him and offer editorial comments and explanation of subtleties as we go. If I ratchet up my reactions to suspense, humour, the air of the ridiculous and over-act he gets more out of the experience. Because he’s a sensitive kid, sad or scary parts need special handling. In the past when we knew he was coming for an overnight or longer visit I’d head into town to borrow a
Cars bed and armload of kid’s movies from my sister. Now Grady is content sleeping in his ‘nest’ on the living room floor. Surprising how a sports-themed quilt, Batman pillowcase and a coverlet can make a kid happy. Finally I bit the bullet and invested in a boatload of kids’ movies of our own. How many times can we watch Toy Story 1, 2, and 3 after all? This was a big decision in a household that just barely got rid of the old VHS tapes our daughter watched as a kid. I capitalized on a sale of five or ten dollars movies. Though I did spring full-price for ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’. And slowly we’re watching our way through twenty-one titles. We just watched ‘Robots.’ Even though I know a lot of technology is involved I can’t
help but feel that animators are geniuses. The detail, sophistication and speed are mind-blowing. I also love that screenwriters haven’t forgotten the adults. There is humour, innuendo and a genuine message imbedded in most. Through an excellent storyline and the vocal talents (and smooth moves) of stars like Robin Williams and Halle Berry we learn that ““everyone can shine no matter what they’re made of.”” On our next viewing I’ll be sure to imbed that line, that truth into the sponge-like mind of a certain four year old. In the meantime I have a dilemma. Do I start secretly watching these movies on my own with the door locked and the curtains drawn or do I invite Grady over more often? Tough call from where I sit.

Ride For Dad ready to roll into Lamont County Michelle Pinon Editor
The Edmonton Motorcycle Ride For Dad prostate cancer fundraiser is back by popular demand, and will be heading throughout Lamont County on Saturday, June 14. Chris Reeves, one of the co-chairs of the event, can hardly wait for ride day to arrive. She, along with fellow co-chairs Paul Berthiaume and Garry Crawford, will be riding along celebrity ride captains Gord Steinke (Global TV) and Rob Berg (K-97 Radio). “We usually ride a new route each year but last year’s event was so well received by the towns we stopped in and the riders loved the route and the reception they received at each stop, we decided to do the route again,” said Reeves. According to Reeves, “The route leaves CFB Edmonton and the first stop is Bon Accord. The riders select a playing card that will start their poker hand.” The next stop is Andrew for water and another poker card. Then onto Mundare for lunch where Stawnichy’s Meat Processing will be serving up scrumptious kubbie burgers for riders and participants for a nominal charge with all of those proceeds going back to Ride For Dad. Susan Campbell, community development officer for the Town of Mundare said there will also be entertainment by the town office and a community planting of a blueberry bush just down the street. The next stop will be in Lamont for another poker card. Members of the Lamont Lions Club will be serving refreshments at the arena with proceeds also
going back to the Ride For Dad. Then the participants will make their way back to CFB Edmonton for supper. “This will be our eighth ride. Last year we had just over 1,000 riders that raised $221,061. One hundred per cent of what is raised here, stays here. We select which research project we want to support at the Cross Cancer Institute. The last two years we have supported Dr. John Lewis and his team at the Cross. We also do education and awareness ads on radio, television and print. “We are very proud of our riders and the support of the communities and our volunteers,” added Reeves. “We need 150 volunteers to put on a successful and safe ride. Our goal this year is 1,200 riders and our fundraising goal is $250,000. We hope to exceed these numbers.” Reeves went on to state, “Ride For Dad likes to visit the small communities as opposed to having a city ride as it makes for a more enjoyable day for our riders and it’s safer. Prostate Cancer doesn’t care if you’re a farmer or a lawyer or a truck driver - it strikes men, all men. As well, all men from Edmonton and surrounding communities have to go to the Cross Cancer Institute for treatment; we support the Cross. Remember, one in seven men will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and these men are our fathers, husbands, brothers, sons and friends.” She also made a point to say, We can’t thank our friends in Bon Accord, Andrew, Mundare and Lamont enough. Your communities are the heart and soul of Alberta. We couldn’t do this without your support.”
Around 1,200 motorcyclists are expected to participate in the eighth annual Motorcycle Ride For Dad that will be travelling through Andrew, Mundare and Lamont this Saturday.

Run For The Bus raises $5,700 Michelle Pinon Editor
Sylvia Ostapowich knows all too well that it takes a village to raise a child. Ostapowich, was one of 35 participants in the annual Servus Credit Union Run for the Bus on Saturday, June 7. Ostapowich was joined by her daughter Melanie Fedorvich, grandson Josh Fedorvich, and Sylvia’s daughter-in-law Terry
Andriuk. Following the run, Ostapowich said you have to pitch in as much as you can to support each other, and was more than happy to do her part. Volunteer firefighter Blake Kucher was happy to do his part to help out. “It’s a good way to give back to the community,” said Kucher, who assisted with roadside safety and handed out water bottles to participants at the intersection of 855/45. Also helping out were
athletic director Cory Kokotailo and Carla McTurk, who jointly raised $790; Geoff Bryks, who raised $500; Carri, Breck and Bryce Hrehorets, who collectively raised $370; Gabbie Sumner, who raised $310; and Mel Sidor, who raised $301. The winner of the 10 km race was Pam Verhoeff and the winner of the four km race was Carla McTurk. The oldest participants included: Vanessa Ostashek, Rosa Pinzauti and Elke Carr.

Andrew School athletic director Cory Kokotailo blows the whistle to start the Run for the bus.
In the end, it is the athletics program and its participants who will be benefitting from the funds raised ($5,756) that will go towards gas and maintenance of the Wildcats Bus that will transport athletes to and from volleyball, basketball, golf, curling, track and field and badminton. In the average school year, about 12,000 kilometers are logged onto the odometer; and by lending support, all the participants are demon-
strating how important sports are for students at Andrew School. “One of the greatest treasures of this small school and community is the ability to show up, time after time, for fundraising events. The students of Andrew School and the parents and community members never cease to amaze me when it comes to supporting the school and the programs we offer for the students. From the drama program’s dinner theatre
night, to the highway clean-up, to this fun run, the community comes out in droves to support us and I, personally, cannot thank them enough,” stated Kokotailo. He also wanted to thank Cheryl Bodnarek and her staff at the Andrew Branch of Servus Credit union for their continued support of the Run for the Bus. Mundare barber retires after 65 years Michelle Pinon Editor
After 65 years of clipping and cutting, it was time for Nick Kobzey to tuck his tools of the trade away. But even he admitted that he might not be able to end that chapter of his life. But his wife Lill and children Clarence and Gladys are more than
willing to help Nick turn a new page in his life. In fact, all of the Kobzey’s were at the barber shop and hair salon on Saturday, May 31 in Mundare, to host an open house to officially mark Nick’s last day of work. “You didn’t tell me about the reunion,” joked Doug Herrick, who was more than
happy to take a seat in his chair. The Ryley resident didn’t realize it was Nick’s last day on the job, but he and his wife wished him all the best and stayed for refreshments and a short visit. Lill, who is a former hairdresser, said the time has come for Nick to come and live with her at St. Michael’s Seniors Lodge in

Edmonton. In fact it was in Edmonton where Nick and Lill first met each other in 1949. “We met in training,” said Lill. Then on Oct. 28, 1950 they tied the knot. The couple lived and worked in Redwater for a short time before moving to Mundare. On Aug. 1, 1951 they moved into the barber shop and hair salon. “It was a Sunday,” recalled Nick. In 1972 Nick decided to go back to school to learn hair dressing at Marvel College. Then in the fall of 1979, the Kobzey’s opened another location in Tofield. While circumstances forced them to shift locations multiple times, they kept the shop open there until 2009, all the while commuting back and forth to and from Mundare. Over the years Clarence learned the tricks of the trade and went on to become a full fledged barber himself. Clarence, who lives in
Sherwood Park, has been in the trade for the past 33 years. In fact Clarence, will be getting Nick’s original barber chair after it has been completely reupholstered. Just like the chair,
the fabric of Nick’s life is changing, but his loved ones will be there beside him to make things a little more comfortable for him.

Dreaming big the only way to go for local rider Michelle Pinon Editor
When Heather Nielsen dreams; she dreams big. In fact the Lamont resident’s dream could be considered gigantic—qualifying for Canada’s equestrian team to compete in the lesser known sport of endurance horse racing in the Olympics. Both Nielsen, her coach and fellow rider Colleen De Vry, owner of NightWind Arabians, which is located southwest of Bruderheim, have been making strides together to get on the path to reach that goal over the past two years. But first things first. Heather must earn enough points accumulated during several long distance endurance races in order to qualify to go to the 2015 Pan American Championships in Toronto. As Heather explains, “The 2015 Pan American Games are a sporting event involving approximately 6,000 athletes from 41 different nations competing in 36, 40 disciplines and nearly 400 events.” The exuberant 16-year-old went on to state that, “Endurance is one of the lesser known and lesser
reported sport. However, it is still a part of this wonderful opportunity. In order to qualify to be on the youth-junior team for Canada, I am going to need to do a lot of rides and a lot of (Federation Equestre International) sanctioned rides. FEI is the organizer and head group that plan and look after everything that is equestrian for any international competition.” Altogether, Heather has to do two, 50 mile rides and three, 75 mile rides along with other novice qualifications. “We’re like the marathon runners of the horse world,” said Colleen. They have had to travel many miles so far this year to compete in these sanctioned rides, and won’t know if Heather’s qualified until sometime next May to go to the PanAm Championships. Travelling and training are very demanding, but ultimately very rewarding, and Heather jokes that both she and her partner, IDL Keyoma Bey, (Jade) are both very stubborn. “The duo has a lot of talent and spirit to add to the NightWind Arabians team,” says Colleen. On May 19 Jade officially became qualified with FEI, and Heather will get her opportunity to qualify
Heather teams up with Jade in all her competitions. with FEI at the end of June during a competition in Ontario. Heather is very excited about the upcoming competition, and is training every chance she gets. With their drive and determination, there is no question that Heather and Jade will blaze an unforgettable trail together all the way to the top. Endurance riding dates back to the time when the US Cavalry tested its horses on a five day, 300 miles (483 km) ride, each carrying over 200 lbs. (91 kg). It became a competitive sport when Wendell Robie traced the Pony Express route from Nevada to California in less than 24 hours. Endurance riding involves a horse and rider team, completing a set course of up to 160 kms, with maximum times assigned to each distance, within a 24 hour period. Multi-day rides are becoming increasingly popular in North America. In addition to FEI competitions, local and national events are held across Canada and the United States. Back in 1982, the FEI approved endurance riding as an official discipline. The number of events and rides have grown considerably over the years, and the hope is that endurance racing will become an official Olympic sport. MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS

In 2009, five local organizations recognized a need, and created a solution, to make information about industrial operations and development easily accessible to the community. Since then, Life in the Heartland has become an increasingly valuable information resource for residents. “Life in the Heartland’s partner organizations are all a piece of the large and complex puzzle that is the Heartland region,” explains Vanessa Goodman, Chair of Life in the Heartland. “Residents want to stay informed about what’s happening locally. Before Life in the Heartland was launched, it was a challenge to find accurate information in one place.” The Heartland region is dynamic, and in the last five years, some things have changed and some haven’t. One of Life in the Heartland’s roles includes maintaining an understanding of the community’s views and types of information residents seek. A look at data collected in the Heartland area since 2009 shows the following trends: x

Fred Penner LIVE! June 12, 2014 St. Michael Rec Center 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Environment (air and water) topped the list as most important topics of interest in 2009, and holds that spot today. Currently, 94% of people state they are very or somewhat interested in air quality and water quality/quantity. Transportation was one of the least important topics of interest five years ago. With industrial and municipal growth and increased pressures on the road network, transportation now ranks among the top 3, with close to 95% stating they are very or somewhat interested. In 2010, the community was most satisfied with the management of safety and emergency response in the region. This topic remains at the top as over 82% of respondents are currently satisfied with how well it is being managed. Printed newsletters and local newspapers continue as the leading choices for obtaining information though social media and open houses are both rising in popularity. The ways to connect with residents has increased, including local radio and new social media tools.
Celebrating success is important to Life in the Heartland. “We involved people from across the Heartland to help mark our 5th anniversary by collecting their stories about industry in the community,” says Goodman. “We put the call out, and here are a few we received.” “…collaboration between the public, government and industry has enabled the Heartland to be a leading industrial region in environmental monitoring and management…” “…must remark on industry’s commitment to the Heartland’s safety, environment and community as a role model. I would welcome that commitment to my community…”
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Join us for this FREE event including dinner, a brief presentation from our local Early Steps 2 Success coalition on how our kids are doing developmentally, and a special LIVE concert by Fred Penner! LIMITED SEATING!

New this year is the inclusion of the Highway 14 Roller Derby Association. Members of the group will be skating their hearts out at the Viking Carena Complex from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. For motorbike and car show enthusiasts there will be a Show and Shine on Main Street on Saturday.

Visitors can view the many models of bikes and reminisce with the owners of the cars on display about seeing these old gems on the road. At the north end of Main Street is the Viking Historical Museum, formerly the Viking Hospital. These grounds and buildings are filled with artifacts and displays from the community. The museum will be open on both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, June 23 the festival wraps up with a pancake breakfast and the street hockey tournament playoffs.

Directions: Cook potatoes in boiling salted water until tender; drain. Transfer to a bowl. Whisk together vinegar, oil and 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt until blended. Pour over hot potatoes and toss to coat. Cool to room temperature. Meanwhile, cook beans in boiling salted water for 2 minutes; drain. Cool immediately in ice water; drain. To prepare dressing, whisk together sour cream, salad dressing, pepper, thyme and 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt until blended. Add beans and green onions to potatoes. Add dressing and stir gently to combine. Sprinkle with cheese. Serves 6 - 8. Cook's Note: The ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen used RenÊe’s Gourmet Chunky Blue Cheese Dressing in this recipe. Ah, the potato, so versatile and tasty, no wonder it is a staple at our tables year-round. We boil them, fry them, bake them, and sometimes do all three. This recipe pairs red potatoes with green

RCMP Warns of Scammer impersonating officer personal/financial information to unknown callers • If you are not convinced a caller is a police officer, please call your local police service or detachment to confirm their identity • Consider doing a Google search on any names/phone numbers provided. They may be associated with known telephone scams previously reported online. Anyone who receives a call from someone alleging to be a police officer colleting fines or taxes should hang up immediately, record the caller’s number and contact their local detachment and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or http://www.antifraudcentre.ca. Sgt. Lee Brachmann of the Killam/Forestburg RCMP Detachment adds, “If anyone ever has any concerns that they may have been scammed in this way, they may contact their local Detachment to confirm a police officer’s identity.”
The RCMP Serious and Organized Crime Unit in Edmonton is warning the public to be wary of telephone calls where a caller identifies himself as a serving member of the RCMP, calling to collect unpaid taxes or fines. The scammers threaten jail time, legal action, and use coercive language to scare potential victims into sending money. Be aware, however, that the RCMP does not contact individuals via email for the purpose of collecting fines or taxes and never asks the public to make a payment over the telephone. During one recent call to an Edmonton man, the caller stated he was an RCMP Officer from Manitoba. The caller provided a badge number, phone number, and demanded money for unpaid taxes. The RCMP recommends the following preventive measures: • Never divulge
