Ride for Dad roars through Mundare Michelle Pinon Editor

The Town of Mundare rolled out the welcome mat for motorcyclists and supporters of the annual prostate cancer fundraiser last Saturday. Out in full force were volunteer firefighters with the Mundare Fire Department who assisted with traffic control. Helping feed the hungry participants were Stawnichy’s staff members who offered up delicious kubbie burgers and potato salad for all 252 riders who came through town. It was the third year participants in the Telus Motorcycle Ride For Dad have stopped in the community, and Fire Chief Glenda Dales commented, “They’re just phenomenal. They just love coming to Mundare.” Mayor Charlie Gargus stated, “It was wonderful to see how many riders braved the weather.” Even though they had to ride through hail and rain, the weather did hold off during the stop in Mundare where bikers enjoyed the lunch compliments of Stawnichy’s and entertainment by the Todd James Band. Gargus even had a couple of his former students participate in the ride. “The guy I sponsored said he doesn’t know anybody with prostate cancer, but he could have it someday, and wanted to partici-

pate,” he added. Ride Captain Nelson Santos said the reception he and other riders received in Mundare was terrific. “It was great as always. There was an awesome response.” He also praised the Town of Mundare for all of its assistance, and Stawnichy’s for supplying a wonderful barbecue lunch for riders. “We were overwhelmed by the support.” Santos said prostate cancer hits home with a lot of people on the ride. It even hit home with a fellow who phoned asking how he could participate in the ride even though he doesn’t ride. “The fella was really emotional,” said Santos, and he learned the man had been diagnosed with prostate cancer the week prior to the ride. Around 450 riders raised just over $160,000 for prostate cancer during the ride. “All the money raised stays in Edmonton,” pointed out Santos. “All around it was a good day of rid-

Opinion NDP carbon tax will have grave implications By Richard Starke The true cost of the NDP carbon tax. Earlier this week, the NDP Government passed Bill 20: The Climate Leadership Implementation Act. Bill 20 will implement a carbon tax that will unfortunately have grave implications for rural Alberta. The government repeatedly claims that the carbon tax will not impact rural Albertans because marked fuels such as gasoline and diesel will be exempt. But this completely ignores the fact that there are far more agricultural

PC MLA Richard Starke inputs than just fuel. The costs of production for farmers will definitely go up. Fertilizer prices will increase. The cost of shipping product by truck or rail will also go up, since the carbon tax

will be applied to locomotive diesel and fuel. The NDP government has also quickly forgotten the many successes that our rural and farming communities have made in the reduction of carbon emissions. Zero tillage, for example, has been effective in reducing carbon emissions. And we shouldn’t forget that agriculture and forestry create carbon sinks that pull CO2 out of the atmosphere. Bill 20’s carbon tax won’t just have a negative impact on farmers. It will raise the cost of living for all Albertans, especially those who live

The Lamont Leader

outside a major city. Albertans in small towns, villages, or acreages are not able to just hop on public transit to get to work because they want to avoid paying the carbon tax. Buses don’t run out to acreages and towns every ten minutes like they do in the city. The Progressive Conservatives have been fighting against this illconceived bill since it was introduced earlier this spring. We offered several amendments, including introducing corresponding income tax reductions to make the carbon tax less of a

burden on Albertans. With the exception of one minor technical amendment, every one of our other amendments were voted down. Unfortunately, we are the only effective opposition in the Legislature. While the Official Opposition MLAs opposed Bill 20, their negative and destructive approach merely causes the government to dig in their heels. Instead of rolling up their sleeves and doing some research, the Official Opposition rely on misinformed arguments that invoke the Holodomor, the systematic starvation

of millions of Ukrainians. Farmers didn’t starve because they failed to produce food. They starved because their food was stolen from them. It is extremely disappointing to see certain MLAs from that caucus act with such callous disregard of the memory of those who suffered and died. The Progressive Conservatives will continue to be the voice of reason and use sound research that benefits Albertan families to hold the NDP government to account in the Legislature.

Mystery and miracles on and off stage at Lamont High Michelle Pinon Editor

The Lamont junior high drama class delivered stellar performances during their first ever production on Wednesday, June 8. Besides great acting, there were many other moving parts behind the scenes that added a unique flavour to the evening of entertainment. One of the moving parts was Aiden Bell-Sloan who welcomed the audience before the curtain came up. Aiden, a displaced resident of Fort McMurray, introduced the comedy mystery, “The Mysterious Case Of The Missing Ring”. Drama teacher Breanna Sorotsky joined him on stage, and explained how Aiden stepped into help with the production even though all the parts had already been cast. “Aiden is a gifted actor in his own right,” stated Sorotsky, as he filled in as an understudy, and in any other capacity he could. Sorotsky said it was the first time in eight years of teaching drama she’s taught junior high students, and the largest show she’s directed. “This is the most talented and dedicated class I’ve ever had.” She praised the students for plugging their way through one and a half months of rehearsals, and the dedication and commitment it took on their behalf throughout the entire process. “I’m so proud of each and

In late July, five students will be attending a summer drama camp at Red Deer College. “The camp is for talented young actors to help them develop their dramatic skills and to help students meet people who can forward them to post secondary careers.” One of those students, Sommer Riley, was sponsored by Terralyn Matiaszow and Lynette Miller, to attend the camp which runs from July 17-23 in Red Deer. Sorotsky was very moved by the kind gesture, and stated, “I hope by helping one another we can fulfill our dreams.” All proceeds from the play, approximately $550 in total, were donated to the Red Cross in support of Fort McMurray evacuees.

From Where I Sit: Will You?

By Hazel Anaka Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival is almost four! As Festival Coordinator, it’s been a soupy mix of challenges and gratifying moments. I’m using this space because I can’t speak to each of you individually. I don’t know if you visit our website or follow us

on Facebook and Twitter or read ads and press releases. Yet there are things you should know. The absolute best part of the Festival is the people. People who help or support or share a contact or perform. The danger in mentioning some names as examples is that others are missed. Forgive me for that. I want to tell you about some people. People who transcend (artificial) barriers like geography; people who jump obstacles in a single bound; people who offer themselves. Mundare’s Mayor Charlie Gargus doesn’t see a boundary between his town and the festival host community. He and Debby have contributed

to our success since Day One. Orest and Tim Nimchuk are Lamont businessmen yet they have provided in-kind support to the festival every year. Bruderheim’s Mayor Hauch supports us through social media. Andrew keeps stepping up to the plate. In 2013 I didn’t know Natalia Onyschuk from Eve. Now I know she’s a multi-talented Edmonton woman who loves teaching and singing. She did korovai demos for two years; displayed school projects from her bilingual classes; and last year as part of Zemlia Vocal Trio sang at the church, museum, and grain elevator. This year they’re back and ask us to ‘experience the

buildings and their history through song.’ After that, they will head to the Andrew Seniors’ Lodge to entertain the residents. The amazing thing is these ideas came from Natalia. She sees and values what we’re doing and offers to make it better. And she does. So, the question becomes…is there anything you can do to make the festival better? Or perhaps, more importantly, will you? If I knew what you could do, I’d surely ask. But I don’t know your talents or gifts or interests or connections. Do you or your kids or grandkids live or love to Ukrainian dance? We’d showcase that talent

whether it’s a whole dance class or a solo performance. MY Ukrainian Dance Academy of Edmonton is coming back for the fourth year. We’ve loved watching them grow and evolve; some are now junior Shumka dancers. This year, they’re teaching a basic Learn to Dance workshop on Saturday morning before they perform. This year, we’re talking about moonshine. And while we know you’ve never made any, perhaps you could tell stories about the still your dido or dad or uncle had back in the day. It’s okay. The statute of limitations has run out. Maybe you have incredible photos you’d

let us scan for our 125th anniversary celebration. Maybe you have artifacts or objects you’d allow us to display. (Security is provided.) Maybe you have a bright idea for this year or next. Maybe you know someone who’d love to be involved as a performer or presenter or a vendor in Baba’s Bazaar or an entrant in the Borshch Cook Off. We welcome (and use) all brilliant ideas. We follow up on leads. We show our appreciation to those who help. No matter who you are or where in Lamont County you live, this is your festival to get involved with. The question is will you?, from where I sit.

Lamont Community Fair & Perogy Festival set to kick off Michelle Pinon Editor

Organizers of the second annual Lamont Community Fair & Perogy Festival are going over a few last minute details before Saturday’s big event. The June 18 extravaganza is jam packed with events for young and old, and promises something for everyone. The festivities will kick-off at 11 a.m. with a parade. More than 80 entries are expected for the highly popular event. But be sure droves of people will want to par-

take of pancakes and perogies afterwards. An indoor trade show and market square will have plenty to offer browsers and shoppers alike. To date, 50 vendors have confirmed spots for the market square that will run from 12 noon to 6 p.m. and the trade show will end at 5 p.m. For the kids there will be carousel rides, bouncy houses, zorb balls, and petting zoo. Another outdoor event will be the Power of the Past Tractor Pull at 1 p.m. that will also feature mini tractors, street trucks, modified trucks and tractors, and pro

The parade is slated to begin downtown at 11 a.m.

stock tractors pulling semi’s. Admission is $10 per person, and children five and under are not charged admission. If you prefer to stay indoors, then why not take in one of the perogy making demonstrations. One will be held at 1 p.m. and the other at 3 p.m. Folks will also be able to enjoy perogies in the evening from 5-7 p.m. with the perogy supper. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children; 10 and under. After supper it will be

time to enjoy the Dueling Pianos. “Tickets are not required for the duelling pianos, this is a free event. It takes place in the beer gardens and everyone is welcome. Come with a selection of songs you would like to hear,” says Phyllis Anger, one of several festival organizers who have been diligently working on details over the past several months. The final event of the evening will be Fireworks, which is overseen by members of the

Lamont Fire Department. Last year just over 900 people attended the festival, and organizers are hoping to attract 1,000 people. With lots of

entertainment, food, shopping, and childrens activities, it promises to be a great day out for the entire family. So clear off the schedule and come hungry on Saturday.

Lamont Lakers athletics wrap-up successful year By Cory Kokotailo The Lamont High Lakers wrapped up a very successful year in athletics. If we were to describe the year of athletics at LHS it could be done in one word, growth. The program added two volleyball teams, saw a return of curling to the high school and saw a tremendous increase in participation numbers in badminton, golf and track and field. This growth could not have been possible without extra dedication from staff coaching teams and from community support to aid in the increase in expenses and support of our home tournaments. The volleyball program added high school boys and grade 9 boys teams this year, moving our team numbers to five and allowing approximately 55 kids in grades

7 – 12 to play the game. A highlight from the season was the junior high boys winning the EIPS league championship and the girls finishing second in the league as well. The high school teams both went to zones where they represented Lamont High very well; the high school boys team for the first time this century! The basketball program had four teams as well and saw many successes also. Again the junior high boys team won the EIPS league and the girls finished second, both having very strong seasons winning their home tournament as well in January. The high school boys team had success losing in the consolation final at Redwater over the year and the high school girls team was consolation champions in Bonnyville over the year as well.

Badminton and track saw the most growth this year. The junior high badminton team had 44 players seeing action for the Lakers and the high school team had twenty students competing in the royal blue. Highlights for the year saw the Lakers send five students to zones in Lac La Biche for high school and multiple junior high players finishing in the top three at the EIPS badminton league tournament. Track and field had 31 junior high competitors six high school students, with all six high school students representing LHS at zones again in St. Paul. The junior high track team had great success as well with members Dylan Zacharko (shotput), Ethan Zago (100 M, 1500 M, 400 M relay), Connor Kardash (javelin) and Nick Dyck (high jump) representing

Lamont High at junior high zones in St. Albert. Curling and golf also had prosperous seasons representing the Lakers. The curling team consisted of a boys team and girls team with both teams going 1-2 at zones after playing and practicing in the Friday night recreational league at the Lamont Curling Club. The high school golf team competed in September at zones at Whitetail Crossing in Mundare and finished 6th in the 12 team tournament. The junior high golf team, fresh off their spring golf camp competed at the EIPS tournament also at Whitetail Crossing, and finished 7th out of 10 teams. The Lakers Athletic Program and Lamont High School want to thank all staff members who dedicated time over the year to coach; to community members and parents for their support of the students in these endeavors; and to the businesses and families

of Lamont and the surrounding area that sponsored the Athletic Program; the season, the growth and the successes would not have been possible without any of

these contributors. Lamont High School, the Athletic Program and all its staff wish everyone a safe and restful summer!

Andrew School held its elementary track meet on Friday, June 3. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 competed in many events which included ball throw, high jump, shot put, discus throw, running long jump, javelin, etc. It was a perfect day with blue skies, warm temperatures, and a nice breeze to keep the mosquitoes away. Many parents were in attendance to cheer on the athletes and Parent Council members served up a delicious lunch. The day of competition ended with the boys and girls relay races. Photo above, Morgan Chapman finished first with Chandler Burback coming in a close second.

When is the best time to pre-plan your funeral? Funeral Home and Crematorium The best time to begin making your prearrangements is NOW, while you’re thinking about it.
