A moose wanders across some Lamont County wetlands recently. As moose become more active, both drivers and sight seeers need to proceed with caution. A full grown moose is the largest member of the deer family and can weigh as much as 600 kg, and is taller at the shoulder than the largest saddle horse. The humped appearance is due to massive shoulder muscles. Moose can tolerate cold better than heat and during the summer spend great amounts of time cooling off in slews, lakes or rivers. They are strong swimmers. Moose can be prey to bears amd wolves, so beware that signs of moose can also be an indication of these predators in the area as well. Moose are most dangerous in the fall during rutting season, and when newborns arrive in spring. Photo by Trevor Burn.
